- Do we know if the 'foreign' radios are set to 'automatic' 3g band by default?
- Any benefits to selecting "USA" (850) in the settings vs automatic?
I found this in another post -- a guide to changing these settings with a code. I haven't monkeyed with any settings but the select radio band so be careful with what you do here....
To see all the information about your phone, go to phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
Click on "Phone Information"
Note the "Location:" field and note the changes, as well as Signal strength.
Press "Menu" hard button
Select "Radio Band"
EURO = Lock onto 2100MHz band
USA = Lock onto 850MHz band
pressing on usa only bricked my radio on my phone. I have a photon 4g.
I think this should be in the question section...not the dev section.

Thanks for the heads up, we'll be sure to not do that on Motorola phones. Oh wait, this is the HTC Inspire section - whew! we're safe.
I personally don't think changing anything in that particular menu writes to the phone or makes changes on the actual phone. It makes changes on your sim card. So I don't believe it can brick your phone. I haven't messed with that menu on this phone yet. No reason to. But on prior phones I could change bands or preferred network types and then place that sim in another phone and have the same settings. Also to mention I have an HTC CDMA verizon and sprint phone in front of me and niether has the change bands menu.

I used the unlock code to unlock my D2G and I am in Hong Kong using a local gsm sim card (PCCW 3G). But I can find only 2G network using 'Search networks' function. My setting is GSM/UMTS - Automatic. I have tried other phone using the same sim card and it can find 3G networks. I have typed *#*#4636#*#* and select radio band to USA band (in Phone info -> press menu button -> Select radio band -> USA Band) and it don't have any option for me(other than USA Band). I can see 3G network before and it seems to this problem appeared after I made the USA Band setting in *#*#4636#*#*. What's wrong with my setting? Can anyone help? Thanks a lot.
The problem is that you cant use the USA bands over there and the 3G frequency that they use is probably not supported by the phone
Phone has 850/1900/2100 bands. I am pretty sure Hong Kong uses 2100. So band should be supported. However, I know many providers limit some type like prepaid sim's to 2G. Maybe this is the case? Do you get 3G in another phone with the same SIM?

I have tried other phone with the same SIM and some 3G networks can be seen. Thanks for all your replies. Any suggestion for the setting? Thanks.
Which operator/network is the sim from?

Actualy, D2g has a very poor signal of 3g. It's because of the original rom whivh customised for using in us. You will have beter signal and battery life if using fission rom.
The SIM is from PCCW mobile (Hong Kong). I have made the same setting again (*#*#4636#*#* -> Phone info -> press menu button -> Select radio band -> USA Band) and no more network is available now (even 2G network). So I think the setting blocks all the network other from USA radio band. But how can I set it back? Help!!!!
I hate to say it, but an SBF might be your only option...
So, as of right now, your phone can see NO networks, or just no 3G networks?
My phone CANNOT see any network right now.
Hard reset it.

Hey I have Just got my Sensation, bought with 3 denmark...

But I do have a big problem, I live where 3G coverage is BAD, but the phone can just exactly get 3G net...
normally on my SGS 2 i can disable 3G net and chose GSM ONLY.
but on my Sensation this is not possible, that is the problem with all HTC bought with 3..
the time I had my Desire HD there was a CODE you could enter then there was some kind of system menu that allowed me to chose GSM ONLY...
can anybody help me with that code ?

*#*#4636#*#
scroll down and there should be a pull down menu where you can select the different bands there.
On the stateside phones we have the settings on the phone itself which helps.

So, if you go to Settings>Mobile Networks>Network Mode, you can't select GSM Only?
On the US version you can also dial *#*#4636#*#*. Click on "Phone Information", scroll down and there's a drop down to "Set preferred network type". GSM Only is listed there.

exactly that code I was looking for...
No i Can't select GSM only and that annoying.. if i buy it with a nother company like TDC there is no problem with selecting GSM only, or if I put my TDC simcard in this Sensation I can choose GSM Only. So it must be a combination of the software 3 is modding with their simcard
Fast-disable 3g toggle?
I wonder if there is a way to very quickly switch from GSM (2G) to WCDMA (3G). I'm new to android but on my jailbreaked iphone 3gs i would use a toggle for that which allows me to switch from 2g to 3g within a second.
That was a really good way to extend my batttery life as I used 3g only as needed (for web browsing and youtube), while EDGE was always sufficent enough for email checking, whatsapp and checking tram/Bus departure via app.
Right now I can only set it to GSM-only, WCDMA-only or auto by going the long long way through settings--> antennas etc
I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer to this so hopefully someone knows about this stuff. My carrier uses SIM technology and it's 3G uses 1700 and 2100 bands. I'm wanting to find out which of the newer/higher end android phones I could use for their service and actually be able to use both bands. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Those are T-Mobile bands so you are more fortunate than me. You can use the amazing new HTC Sensation with those bands. Unfortunately my carrier, AT&T, doesn't use those bands and I'm not able to yet get a Sensation. You can pretty much choose any T-Mobile phone. They have LG GX2, Samsung Galaxy S 4G and the HTC Sensation and the Sensation is HTC's flagship phone and highly valued.
Like he said, basically any T-Mobile 3G device will work for you.
I notice most of their phones don't have 1700 listed on their bands though. Does that mean I can or can't use them?

Yes, you can use them with full 3G speed...4G if your service provides it.
By the way, you'll need to unlock any T-Mobile branded phone. Simple to do just by calling T-Mobile CS for the sim unlock code.
So the phone I buy just needs to have either one of the two 3g bands I take it? I guess I screwed up because I bought an unlocked Inspire off eBay and when I put my sim card in I got no data at all, not even edge. So if I was to find an Incredible S unlocked I could use that correct?

Well...Edge isn't locked down like HSPA (3G) is. As long as the phone is a GSM version, Edge should work fine, if the service is putting it out. What you likely are needing to do with your Inspire is input the proper APN settings. And also make sure the mobile data is enabled.
Go to "Setting" > "Wireless and Networks" > "Mobile settings" and see if the top box is checked. If not, check it. Then, still in that same menu, go to "Access Point Names" and see what is there. If there isn't an APN there relating to your carrier, make one by tapping the menu button and choosing new APN. Input the correct carrier values from the list in the link below. Once done, tap the menu button and choose "Save". Make sure that new APN you just created is selected...usually a small green dot to the right side of it.

I told you wrong for the Inspire about the menu system. I just booted mine up and had a look. You will find the data checkbox in "Settings" > "Wireless and Networks" labeled "Mobile network".

The company I'm trying to use this with is called iWireless. They aren't on that list but I had found the apn settings by googling it and I did input them just as you suggested and selected them with the little green dot and no such luck. I even rebooted the phone twice. I'm sad cuz I love the Inspire, I rooted it and put a Sense 3D rom on it that I'm in love with. I want to stay with the carrier though cause they have the cheapest thing around, $50 a month unlimited everything including minutes, data, mms & sms. Can't beat it. But there's not many devices as well supported as the Inspire and I really can't stand anything but HTC after having a Motorola Cliq and Samsung Epic both of which I hated.

Yeah I did use those same settings on my Inspire and no such luck. I did just happen to run across this on the iWireless website however.
"Will any 3G GSM phones get 3G speeds on the i wireless 3G network?
No. Our 3G network will only support AWS/UMTS 1700/2100 banded phones. 3G devices that only have the 2100 band will not be compatible on our 3G network."
http://www.iwireless.com/promoform.asp?promo=3G
So am I wrong in taking that to mean that whatever phone I buy actually has to support both 1700 and 2100 bands in order for me to get 3G upload and download speeds? If so my options will be very limited I'm sure. :\
Okay, so from what I've learned between reading and what you've told me and what I know I want I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I'm gonna want an Incredible S or a Sensation as those are pretty much the only HTC phones that appear to cover 2100 (band 1) and 1700/2100 (band 4) which is what I believe that I need. Tell me if you think I'm wrong.

Strange. That seems to be really locked down. I really can't advise you reliably. I do know that T-Mobile uses the 1700/2100 frequencies and that the Sensation, with only the 2100 portion, will work on it. If your network requires both bands, anything I say might lead you in error. Sorry for the lack of help.

It sounds like iWireless may not support AWS bands though, 1700/2100 is what they use, but doesn't necessarily mean it's AWS.
GSM bands will work without issue, assuming the device is unlocked.

I have the Senstaion 4G (T-mobile version) unlocked and am now on ATT.
I have 2 problems now, one is that the latest update of google maps now causes the phone to reboot everytime, and the other is that I only get 2G signal.
I called HTC and the tech there said that it is possible to change the bands it uses for 3G but it has to be done with a custom ROM. Since I am having this other problem with Goggle Maps now I've been considering rooting the phone. Does any one know if there is a ROM out there that will change the 3G bands to 850/1900 that ATT uses? I know the XE already has them used, but the T-Mobile doesn't.
Try pressing *#*#4636#*#* a menu will come up called phone information, press on that menu, from there find your current signal, press on it, another menu will pop up, you can change your bands from there. I use wdcma only and it keeps me on H or closest to 4 g signal.scroll down press refresh after you choose your signal. Now that said, it does depend on what's available in your area. So if wdcma drops or won't come through (give it a minute) then it might not be available.in your area. But this is how to change you're signal. I believe it works on non rooted devices also. It is there secret menu. It works for me. Give it a try. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

Hi All
I have a problem, and don't really know that to do. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4g, rooted, running the latest nightly and modem. Recently I went on vacation to Europe and while there used local sim cards from t-mobile Eu. At first nothing worked, Then I read some forums and from there learned of the *#*#4636#*#* code. Used the Select Radio Band option and switched to the Euro band selection. All was well Europe SIM cards worked Data, voice everything.
I get back to Canada, and I figure I need to switch back to the USA band. So I do. but still no service, no voice or data. I can get roaming. but that's not really an option. I see the network operators Bell and Rogers, but no Wind or Mobilicity(who use the 1700 band). I'm on wind. So to me it looks like the 1700 mhz band is turned off on my phone.
So far I have tried...
Used the *#*#4636#*#* multiple times switching bands...
Tried using the settings menu to select wcdma preferred or global
Re-flashing the modem
Flashing to the newest nightly
Tried a verified good SIM card
Nothing works....
I'm thinking I may have to go back to the stock t mobile software and try to turn on the radio there...
So does anyone have an idea what could be missing? Or how to specifically turn on the 1700 mhz band? The select radio band pop up only has two options Euro band and USA band.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Okay!
So I think I'm back up and running, all AWS networks in Canada show up. Haven't tried data or voice, but I'll be doing that on the way home from work...I'll post after if things still don't work...
So these are the steps I took....
1. Using CWM I did a full back up to an SD card.
2. Then using CWM I flashed the stock JB firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41209211&postcount=1
3. In the Dialer app. I dialed *#197328640# navigated through the gsm, lte, wcdma options and set the band selection to automatic.
4. Tested phone on stock to see if it picks up the networks...and it did!
5. Using CWM restored my original cyanogenmod install with all settings and software.
6. Tested network connectivity again, and the networks now show up.
On the way home I'll do some tests with data and voice.
Looks like everything works! woot!
It looks like there's a bug in the band selection code. It should be offering you the AWS frequencies, as well an an automatic everything choice.
I'll look into a fix for apexqtmo. In addition, I will nuke the CDMA options, they're not needed and probably causing other problems.
