ok so i bought this xperia x10a two days ago and never personally had an android before so i didn't know anything about rooting or custom roms until recently i've been shoving my face in the middle of it. heres whats ive done so far...
installed android sdk r08 windows
installed x10 usb phone drivers
adb in cmd prompt shows device listed with serial number so i have the install right
ive installed universal androot 1.6.2 beta 5 using adb install
i opened up androot and rooted the phone with superuser and matching firmware option, androot says it worked.
i tried to load google earth apk, and im STILL security blocked--what gives?
so i didnt sweat it, i figured maybe i should try another rooter. i installed z4root using the same method. i opened the program and it asked me if i wanted to re-root (because androot thinks it worked i assume) so i went ahead and hit re-root. it went through its process and says it worked as well.
yet, i still cannot install google earth because of the ATT security block. could i somehow be rooted but still have this security block? i don't see how, isnt that the purpose...to unrestrict the phone?
anyway, my x10a is still running 1.6 eclair and ive used sony ericsson's update service program to try upgrading to 2.1 and give it another try but their program says my phone is up to date when clearly my phone shows its firmware being 1.6. ive hit a brick wall with this...can anyone give me a sledge hammer? for the brick wall i mean, not the phone.
The reason you still cannot install non market apk's is that ATT has turned off the "install non market apps" by default at the factory. you are going to have to install a custom ROM in order to get away from the ATT branded phone. Google installing a ROM for X10. I did it on a friends phone a few weeks ago and got him up to 2.1.1
Good Luck!

well, i can install non market apk's...i installed both universal androot and z4root USING Android SDK. once installed, both of them say they can root the phone. now, i actually get asked whether i want some programs superuser access, and when i say yes--it allows it. i think my problem with google earth not installing via android sdk is that im still running android 1.6 and Earth requires at least 2.1. I don't see a x10 rom for 2.1 on the market to try it and ericsson update service still says im fully updated with the latest. if i can manage to get 2.1 i bet you i can install google earth and anything else that will run on 2.1. android sdk seems to be a viable workaround to the non market app restriction if im thinking about it right...i just need 2.1 now and continue using android sdk to install my 3rd party apps until a fully functional and stable 2.1+ custom rom comes out for the x10. anyone have any thoughts? give me a another 3rd party apk to install that will work with 1.6 and ill try to install it and see what my results are.
Htc sync suite says there is an update for it. so i download the update and try to install it and it says that the one i have is newer than the update and that I have to delete my current one in order to install this one. Basically this doesn't make any sense. Why would the program say there is an update for it when this "update" is an older version.
Should I delete my current and install the older one? ???
Mine is HTC sync 3.0 according to the ABOUT tab in HTC sync. It may have come from my Sensation 4g. But every time I turn on my computer it says there is an update, but it is an older version than the one installed..
anyone else getting this? and should i uninstall mine and install the "update" (the update is same as the one on the HTC website).
anyone? some insight please?
if you want to set up your htc sync settings again its not necessarily going to hurt if you uninstall and update (if it really is an update as your allude too).... its not going to destroy your computer in anyway or your phone... and if you do a full uninstall and install the update (again if it is an update) it may rectify your issue of it saying there are updates when there isnt really an update
i cannot find this in the marketplace.. anyone have a link to the xap?

yes but it will not run the setup when you upgrade to mango
It is not working in mango anymore..... Just side loaded it when you click it it goes black then closes..... I think mango blacklisted it?????
It was there a few days ago when I first upgraded to Mango. It installed but would not run (said carrier not found). Hopefully they pulled it until they get it upgraded and it comes back.
i canĀ“t find Compass too..
Did you look in the system settings, thats where I found it
Just did the HTC Hub update and it is still not there.

it has been removed
only God knows the reason why it was removed
HTC Surround originally on Telus, used Connection Setup to reconfigure for Rogers. Updated to Mango, now I've lost 3G. With no access to Connection Setup, I can't re-enable data. Any ideas?

Go back to your backup made right before the update, then uninstall Connection Setup before you update. If it is installed it tries to run when the update finishes and you lose 3G. This is probably the main reason it has been pulled as it does not work on final Mango.
Could not restore to backup because I replaced the 16 GB SD card with an 8GB! I flashed stock Telus Rom with Nodo, and then flashed DFT 7720 Rom. Phone now works great (my wife is currently enjoying Angry Birds on it!)

Yea, if you updated to the newest version, it gives that error.
If you ran the older version (non updated), it will run your provxmls BUT, on verizon you would lose 3G service totaly, Hard reset or reflash rom would be the only fix (tried a lot of stuff).
It needs to be upgraded for mango but, the good old days of doing reg edits I think is over for HTC devices with this.

At this point I am going to wait and see if they release an updated version and then hope my provxml file is still sitting there. I had uninstalled it before upgrading so it did not try to run and I have 3G, then went to the HTC Hub and downloaded what was there which failed to run (and has since been pulled).
AFAIK the provxml file should still be sitting there waiting to get "provisioned"
Is there anyway to get connection setup back on without using marketplace?

Hi derausgewanderte,
Yes this is the correct packages although would "HTC connection setup" still work after it has been sideloaded if i upgrade to mango and the device relocks?
I think ill have to wait it out untill it becomes available in marketplace again or another way is found to unlock mango.

Hope I Have Been Of Help. PEACE!!!
my phone recently updated OTA to the latest 2.11.605.9 update, I then downgraded to 2.11.605.5 so I could use revolutionary to gain s-ff and root. I have everything working and currently running Gingeritis 3d latest version.
Question is, the vcast media manager pops up everytime i plug my thunderbolt into the pc, I have checked "do not display when connected" but it does anyway, my main question is why? I am not running anything stock so why is this still popping up? I figure it was part of the OTA update but since I flashed a custom rom shouldn't that have removed such things?
Just curious, everything works just thought the purpose of custom roms/kernals was to get away from verizon bloatware.
Thanks

On root directory go into "Etc" and delete the file cd????. I don't remember the name, but it is the only file that starts "cd".

Has anyone used the app to flash busybox onto their device? In the past it's always been built in to the custom ROMs that I download, but right now I'm very happy with stock and just want to stick with it for a month more or so.
I just wonder since it's such a new device, and Verizon devices always have compatability issues with what are otherwise universal processes and applications.
It shouldn't be an issue if you're S-OFF.
