Pictures taken with xt720 - Milestone XT720 General

Since mighty Zn5 i have greatest respect for Motorola camera phones. Soon enough I hope I will change my X10 for xt720.
I would like to see your shots and hear your thoughts about xt720 cam, cause its a shame that this phone doesn't have thread like this of its own.
Thanks

actually the photos taken are not as good as it's counterparts..

well, only photos taken with xt720 you can find on internet are those on Esato forum http://www.esato.com/phonephotos/index.php?make=Motorola&model=MilestoneXT720 and most of them are mediocre except those indoors which are excellent. Majority of other photos, are taken from car or something, so they dont represent true quality. So I wanted to see some representative specimen here

If you check out XT720 reviews, most of them have pics from the camera (for the purpose of the review). I find the camera is pretty good (amazing with the flash in dark environments).

yes I am aware fo that, but those photos are quickly taken during 1-2 days needed for review. But when you use cell and know its strenghts and weakneses you tend to make much better pictures. General story about xt720 camera is, pictures are mediocre, it has shutter lag bla bla bla etc. in which I dont believe according to few samples and specs of camera.
In some cases I like x10 camera, but I dislike: fake colours, low sharpness, idiotic flash, poor night mode, slow interface etc.
Check this xt720 picture out

Amazing sharpness even strong light goes directly in lens

I don't believe the quality of the pics are bad, they tend to look great for me for the most part. Shutter lag is there kind of though (sometimes takes a good moment for it to take the picture after pressing the button) .

and what camera apps do you use?
i has been using the stock app but found out that it compressed the jpeg file too much...

shutter lag as if "time between pressing shutter and actual taking of the photo"? And how big it is? half second, 1 sec?
I ve read somewhere that nightmode is not functioning at all, that its like normal mode + flash, not like normal nightmode with higher iso and exposure?
Post images

xt has good camera quality (I would say better than ZN5)
I don't know of what shutter lag are everybody talking about, but the only lag is happening when you take first picture with xenon flash (this is normal behavior because flash capacitor needs to fill up)
it has very good macro mode, light metering is great (ZN5 would burn some photos with xenon, but with xt this is not case)
auto focus is really quick, and noise is acceptable (mind you this is not camera, but cameraphone )

I fully agree with pajo.
This is a great camera and all functions well. I do notice the shutter lag, but it only happens SOMEtimes, 99% of the time there is no lag. So that 1 time it does happen is not worth mentioning. I use the stock app btw.
I also dunno what people are talking about the modes. Night mode doesn't work? Then why does it work fine here? Same for macro. Also works. Everything in the camera works (I use Dexter 2.2 btw, but even on stock 2.1 it works fine).
I love this phone and the camera

well since I consider Zn5 to be best camera phone after N8, than you put up quite a challeng here . Go post some night landscapes and normal night shots so I can see quality.
Btw concerning HDMI, is it only for playing videos, or you can use TV for playing games, browsing etc.?

Disappointed with the camera quality
Actually I have XT720 with standard OS 2.1
I'm VERY disappointed with quality of pictures.
Here is some comparison I made between my NEW 8Mpixel XT720 and my OLD 5Mpixel Nokia N95.
Please check at attached pictures (name of the pictures should be self explanatory)
Now you really think the camera is good....
I also compared the phone with Sony X10 and Samsung "latest galaxy something" and the worst quality is with Motorola XT720
If you want more test (even more official) take a look at
GSMarena website where they have picture comparison of latest cameraphone and, please, address me to a phone that is worst that XT720.
I just have a question:
Is the camera performing better with 2.2 Update?
Thanks

Better camera app for panoramic shots on HD2?

is there a camera app that has a better panoramic feature than the one that's already built into the HD2? the one that's with the factory camera app doesn't stitch together well. Auto stitching would be great.
Agree on that, "autostitching" should realy be standard. Almost impossible to make a perfect panoramic photo atm...
I really hope someone can make an app with auto stitching cause the HD2 takes beautiful pictures. So having a panoramic feature that actually works right would make it 100x better
Best solution is take individual photos that overlap, transfer to PC, then make panoramas with one of the many progs available for desktop.
I concur. In fact, the best panorama software I had the pleasure to use was (believe it or not) windows live photo gallery.
Here are some examples I had shot with my Canon 720IS...
I challenge you to find any seems, the image was made of 8 images stitched together.

Oh, that's easy to find seems in that picture
Bottom left, something wrong with the tiles on the floor and the handrail/(other english expression for it).
Also, look at the trees from right to left, you'll notice something on the far right side, colours are different too
But that's a pretty good result for Windows Live Photo Gallery!
I still use Photomerge in Photoshop for making panoramas though.
I haven't seen any camera program on a mobile phone do some good stitching and I don't think they are capable of stitching a XX MPix-Pano together well...
I'd be happy if anyone could prove me wrong on this!

Lukas

You got me!!! (though, I still can't seem to find the tree anomaly that you speak of )
As for the colour correction, the source images did not go through any post processing, they were straight from the camera (in full manual with preset white balance, exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture as well as ISO) I guess the colour variation might be the result of the weird angle of the sun
But, I guess that would be 'good enough' for 99% of users here.
Also, if you are using a mobile for creating panoramic images, that would be the least of your problems.
My wifes iPhone has pretty good app. It's called "auto stitch". It actually works pretty well. Oh well i guess if there's no mobile app for the HD2 I guess I will make panaramic images with PhotoShop. Would be nice to just have it done right on the phone.
Are you looking for something that shows you markers whilst you take the pic, or just something that can stitch pics together?
I think one of the problems is HTC's camera driver (which you'd need access to to write such an app) is a bit of a closed cupboard for developers It's easy in code to access the images after they've been taken (so it would be possible to have an app thatt could stitch existing photos), but not easy (impossible?) to access the real-time video feed bit so that you could overlay stitching markers whilst taking the pics. If you do it the way you're meant to in code I think you get a really low-res version of it from what I've read. Probably HTC being lazy (getting it to work for them but not for any developers). Shame as I reckon we'd have a few iphone-esque augmented reality type apps if things were a bit clearer on that front
James
I found a way to get pano pic´s on the HTC HD2!
Just install this cab... i tried to put it to work and it didn´t worked... I uninstalled it and after it keep on working fine...
I tried the above cab on my HD2
and in panarama mode it takes a very light/bright first image then freezes and reboots the phone in about 30 seconds. Just FYI.
Strange, because i having enabled panoramic photo function by my own registry mod and this mode working very good (of curse best results are when we set light, ISO etc. manualy).
Unfortunely panoramic photos maked in this mode having low resolution, so i suggest is better take few normal photos in different sides and join in some piece of software in PC, because this give much better results.

,3M means 0.3 megapixels...thats probably the only downside..but the picture still looks great!!
I removed the twiz or whatever is called home app..and deleted all crapware..and yes..is really fast....faster than froyo on nexus one..I can believe is running android 2.1....what other mods can I install??

(How to flash tut = here) Basically shows you how to access dl mode.
First download all the files for the JH2 (the firm, tar, and pit) then you must have odin running first, select the tar, and pit file in their respective directory and extracting. THEN you enable download mode in phone.
After you have stock JH2

All of this is done INSIDE the phone. No post processing or anything needed. Press a button one time, just follow the green box and your done. Samsung makes real digital cameras by the way.
You can also make action shots when you select the action mode. Not sure if the Captivate has this:
I cant seem to change the resolution in panoramic mode
I believe thats normal. Having a higher pixel count might lead to massive picture sizes and would probably cause a problem for the phone imho.

All cameras even high end sony digital cameras when shooting panaroma shoot in a lower then their native.
No big deal..ill use my 7d for that
Photostitch lets you make panoramas with a much higher res but you have to manually snap each shot. Anyone had success with vertical panorama shots?
I love the camera on the Captivate. It blows my old iPhone camera away. These pics aren’t the best, but its more than capable of performing well. The detail is amazing especially when viewing on the phone.

When HTC and Samsung came out with burst camera in their quad core devices we were all excited by one of the camera feature "Burst shot mode"
But now thanks to Spritefish we can now have the same experience on our Android devices and you don't need to have the One X or S3
Fast Burst Camera has made its way onto the Play Store and it does exactly what we were looking for. Simply hold down the button and you can snap up to 30 frames in a single second if your device allows it. The free version works just fine, but has a few ads which can seem intrusive. For $4, you can buy the pro version which unlocks some additional features such as auto-focus and lighting settings. View the video below to see some real life experiences with the application and see if it could help you take some neat shots.
Note : due to the high speed, pictures are not taken in the highest resolution possible.

Great app! Does it take pictures in full quality though?
With that kind of pic resolutions, I might be better off by just shooting a video and extracting those frames manually afterwards.
Used the app on my galaxy note, I am amazed by its ability. Just the image quality needs improvement. I tried the lite version though, anyone see any difference in the pro version?
When I read the portal news piece I was anticipating a tool to take rapid fire full resolution pics. While my G2X doesn't have a dedicated camera processing chip but it is still a dual core Tegra phone. I was disappointed to continue reading and discover it was about an app I've had on my phone for nearly a year. Don't get me wrong, I really like the app but it wasn't what I was expecting. Kinda bummed because the stock ROM camera software was pretty good and could do six photo bursts at 2MB but the ROM sucked monkey balls. Still recommend fast bust camera a long a you have plenty of light.

The burst speed is incredible, no lag but the resolution is very low (800*480 insead of 2000*1600)

Yeah 800*480 with no lag really isn't impressive nowadays and the pictures are useless at that resolution.
Nice app. It would be great if we could adjust the shutter speed manually.

Note that this will give you a bad result, as the video is compressed and ripping pictures from this compressed stream will give pictures with compression artifacts in them.

Great pictures, can you show me photo in night
Some says that the camera quality at night is not good, can u confirm that?

I have some complaints. Overall the color and contrast is not as good as those of my galaxy s4. The pictures are sharper, but the following applies
HDR: too agressive, can add a hint of desaturation.
GREEN: taking pictures of green grass on a cloudy day produces extreme oversaturation of green. Turning down the overall saturation relieves this a bit, but of course it reduces the saturation of everything and so had to turn it back up.
COLORS: compared to galaxy s7 it's clear that the colors are not great on the mi5. I tried this with a friend. You don't notice that much looking at MI5 shots in isolation, but compared to the S7 there's a big difference.
The camera is really lagging behind the rest of the high quality specs of the phone.
I kinda like the night picture, there's a noticable improvement from Mi 4c. Here are some samples, you can guess what mode used to take the pictures from the suffix (HHT is automatically used at night even if you turn off auto HDR, but choosing HHT manually turns HDR on, which is weird):

You can not easily get bad photo quality with such a camera module from Sony.
Personally, I am pleased with the saturation rich photos from stock camera app. But I also found that open camera provides even better photos (exposure, etc.)
hows the camera quality on cm13 or other custom roms?
turn down noise reduction in camera apps.. and it will make great pictures all day long..
I've been using the camera for a few days and the issue I have with it is that it prioritises low ISO over longer shutter speed, resulting in motion blur in any picture that is not taken in good light or at a static subject.
I'm having trouble shooting people (especially children) indoors, with good light, where my previous phone (iPhone 5S) had little trouble: it just upped the ISO but maintained a relatively fast shutter speed.
It's an issue with the original camera, the Cyanogenmod camera instead uses higher ISO which results in higher shuter speeds, less motion blur but higher noise and less detail.
Still, I think that's preferable...
An example, just shot indoors, fluorescent lighting:
Original Camera: shutter speed 1/17, ISO 562
Cyanogenmod: shutter speed 1/30, ISO 1360
downtown milky way
moon
Can anyone take picture with aosp and cm14.1 roms?

Mi Note 10 Lite Astrophotography photo+raw samples

How i made these photos:
Most photos have been done with the stock camera in a non-light polluted remote place.
I chose the standard quality for the photos, as "high quality" doesn't increase quality that much, but it takes considerably more space on the phone.
I mostly used ISO6400. (ISO6400 is a bit too noisy, because denoising filter is removing detail in the stars. i would suggest a value between 3200 and 5000, making the photos a bit dimmer)
A exposure time of 30s, and focus set to infinity is mandatory for this kind of photos.
Use a very stable support, use a good tripod on a solid base. I used a car as a support (i placed the phone face down on the roof of the car), but a car is not stable enough because we leaned on it, making the car rock back and forth, and that minor rocking made a lot of photos blurry.[You can't do 30s exposure photos hand-held lol. (anything above 1/4s exposure is blurry)]
Use a bluetooth shutter button (or wireless bluetooth mouse/keyboard, or something else),or use wired headphones with button (carefully, so that you don't pull the phone), or use a timer (5 seconds should be sufficient). [pressing the shutter button, or volume button really shakes up the phone, resulting in a blurry image]
Eliminate any stray light sources (car lights, other phone's light, other lights) because any light that can shine directly or indirectly on the lens of the camera, does affect the final image a lot.
Raw or not raw:
I can say that in the stock camera the raw toggle is done poorly, as it does not save a jpg when shooting raw.
It's easier to edit a non raw photo, and with a bit of talent, excellent photos can be done with non raw (with editing, of course).
I use snapseed to edit the non raw photos on my phone, as it's great, and easy to use.
I use photoshop to edit the raw photos, the whole process takes a lot of time, luma and chroma denoising, color grading, saturation, temperature, are all a nightmare and a half.
Yes, you can get better looking photos with better quality if you use raw, but only if you know what are you doing. (usually raw astronomy photos require lots of tweaking that auto modes don't cover)
I would suggest everybody to not use raw, use the 64mp mode, way less hassle, better experience, great detail.
Google camera astrophotography experience:
I've not tried many google camera ports on this phone (PixelCam_Plus_V2.0, and PX Mod v4.0), but i've had problems with both. (when it comes to astrophotography)
PixelCam does save them after a while, but it takes an unknown amount of time, the results are ok, but i'd like to see what i captured as soon as possible, and it doesn't want to turn on astrophotography mode sometimes.
PX Mod doesn't save astrophotography photos unfortunately.
If someone knows a decent astrophotography gcam (with more than 30s of exposure), please write a reply.
Comparison with Oneplus 5
The oneplus 5 had basically the same settings, but it mostly used ISO3200, i don't know which photos are done with what iso, but assume they all were done with 3200.
Even at ISO3200, the oneplus has lots more noise, but it captures the natural yellow light of the milky way.
I think the Mi Note 10 Lite does a better job at everything, except yellow color.
You can compare side by side the shots, as they were done roughly in the same place.
Tell me your experience.
