[Q] Root now or wait for Gingerbread?

Hey all,
I've been reading up on the forums, trying to figure out the best option to root my Inspire 4G and making sure there is a proven unroot method.
I guess my biggest question is whether I should root now or wait for the official Gingerbread update to come out and root then?? Any input about this question would be greatly appreciated along with suggestions to BEST root/unroot options to keep the phone as close to stock as possible yet have the ability to get rid of these bloated programs.
Anyway, love the site!

We really have no idea if/when AT&T will even release Gingerbread for this phone, so if you might have to root just to get it and install one of the Desire HD releases.
Rooting is not all that hard, the key is making the goldcard correctly. After that you can either do attn1's hack kit or Bubby's gui based method. After that install one of the stock rooted ROMS from the dev section.

I guess there are questions as to what your actual goal is. Do you need to install non-market applications, do you need to really remove the stock AT&T additions? I am not sure I would call the AT&T additions bloated, they serve a purpose in a way most people would rather have served by other programs and therefore bloat the ROM but they are fairly well behaved and aren't that big.
If you check the development section there are rooted stock ROMs available. This will keep everything very close to the original HTC ROM with much of the AT&T extras removed. The rooting process is fairly straight forward if not a bit painful at times, with the hardest part being the process of finding an SD card that will work as a Gold Card. I rooted my phone as I needed some non-market applications from my company that can not be side loaded properly as part of their installation requires accepting a system change and they will not work without this confirmation.
As to Gingerbread coming to this phone, if the amount of time it took the Aria to get Froyo updates is any indication, don't wait for the official release. AT&T drags its feet on updates to phones after they get potential updates from the vendors. This is because they claim to be doing heavy testing internally to make sure the update process is smooth. Not sure I buy that but it does take a long time between versions, so if you are eager for some change on your phone root it now because your wait for an AT&T release will be long.

Basically, I want to keep the door open to do any customization I want as I learn what this OS and phone is capable of.
I'm an avid tinkerer with PCs and the Windows OS and I enjoy not being restricted to one set way to do things. However, I like the setup this phone has originally. I just don't like apps such ad AT&T Familymap, Navigator, Code Scanner, the asphalt game, and the worthless blockbuster app. They are the devil.
Seriously though, I'm all about custom goodies. But I also need a proven way if the phone goes haywire or gets damaged that I can restore to factory and send it in since I have insurance on the Inspire.
Hope this helps fill in the blanks as far as questions to how I'm going to use it. Appreciate the answers so far so please keep them coming!

Oh and I read some rumor that gingerbread was coming in May or June. Good point though on carriers dragging their feet. More than likely going to root now.

Rooting is probably going to be the same no matter what so you may as well do it. As for gingerbread you can get that now with CM7 RC2 is pretty good. If you font mind no htc sense its great and getting better. You can always try it and then change.

Regarding your questions about going back to stock after obtaining root/s-off, it is a very simple process. As for rooting, the hack kit has a very detailed set of instructions.
After reading what you are looking to do, I would suggest moving to one of the rooted stock roms and playing with that. Then flash one of the gingerbread roms whenever you want to check them out. Of course, do a nandroid to save time going back to your previous setup.

I rooted my phone with bubby's rooting program and have downloaded Core Droid Gingerbread version 4 and it is working great, the extra effects that they have added make it all that much more fun to have. I would not wait for AT&T at all.

Waiting for AT&T is like going through a White Castles drive-thru. You only do it if you have a great deal of time to waste.

[Q] To Root or not to Root?

Prior to my Inspire I was on a iPhone 3gs not jailbroken with lots of apps. First like to comment that I love the Inspire, HTC has made an amazing phone. I have been going back and forth on whether to root all day (I have an extra kingston 2gb in front of me to make my goldcard). It seems there are still problems with the root since the Inspire is new, and AT&T is just started offering android. I don't mind following step by step instructions, as I have seen provided by many amazing developers. However, I do mind if my phone is buggy and screen locks constantly. I really do want to unleash this thing with my grandfathered unlimited data plan, but I have never held a rooted android phone let alone a rooted Inspire. How is the rooting compatible with the inspire on AT&T? I've seen locked screens and other bugs in recent posts and am unsure if I should root, suggestions appreciated.

Honestly its up to you. I have done nothing, but experiment and make boot animations which I flash probably about 10 times a day. If you like the phone as it is then don't root. If you want to have control of the phone and do what you want ie. custom roms with overclocking cpu, better battery life, (eng s-off) flash new radios that have better reception and battery life, custom boot animations... the list goes on. It is entirely up to you. Only you can decide if customizing and altering your phone is worth it.

Well that is my entire goal, I wanna get a better battery, reception, tether to my unlimited, and eliminate blockbuster!!!!! i hate that app. But yea I do want that control, but my point is how are these programs running as of now for Inspire? The patches to run other phones is great and has been well developed, but Inspire isn't a month old. What are ROMs running like, and has there been enough debugging to make rooting workable now?

If I am speaking for me, these rom's are working really well. The inspire may only be a month old but the Desire HD has been out for quite a while and almost all of the roms are based on the desire platform. From all the roms I have tried which is all of the ones in this dev section, the only ones I have found major bugs with are the CM7 ones, the other ones are pretty much the stock roms that are optimized.

I would root it. I followed the directions to the letter and flashed CM7...no issues at all except a few CM bugs. The speed alone is worth it.

i would recommend using attn1s hack kit. follow the readme step by step. if you have issues, visit the link in my sig.

Hello from new mytouch4g user.

Hello to everyone. Just got my touch...took forever from wirefly.com and well its nice to have moved up from previous phone...Mytouch 3g obviously. Just a formal hello to fellow tough4g users. I am wanting to right away root my phone but in a head storm about wireflies policies. There very confusing.
Anyway I will try to make myself useful as I do know some good points in themeing so that a plus.

If you looking for a rom, I'd check out mexdroid.....oh and if you want to make your mytouch 4g look better grab a dime or penny and rub the edge of it against the battery cover, no it wont scratch it, it'll scratch off the plastic vinyl and you'll see once your done the battery cover is like a polished metal....looks really nice....there's about here on the mytouch 4g forums with pictures.....I just did mine and whished I did it sooner

if you decide to root your phone , you should considered install virtuous Unity 2.37 (www.virtuousroms.com) what the mytouch series comes with is a sort of sense-hybrid, virtuous unity gives you that real sense feeling , with a large variety of customizations (themes etc.) that you can add plus an incredible Ui , very simple to use , just plainly one of the greatest roms out there

Wow. Thanks all for the welcomes and advice. Since I have a little more assurance about rooting while under wireflys little 181 day policy I am def going to. I am very very familiar as I had prior a mytouch3g and loved that phone to death. But it was time to get with the big dogs. I was...like when I first rooted going to go cm just to know I was good (my way of assuring I know what I am doing as its an easy rom to root to.) But I am just going to go head strong. So thanks all for the help and ideas.

1. Where would I find the guide to downgrading my rom as I am on the stock 2.3.4
2. With being stock how would I check the eMMC Chip? I would like to know before I even attempt to root.
3. Well wild opinion. Visionary or Gfree?

Good to go an everything I am rooted and have just the CM 7 rom running the stable no nightlies or anything. I noticed I guess I have the bad eMMC chip but I am still covered under wireflys 30 day. So really I flash but very seldom very very seldom But on the eMMC forums I guess a little fear has been put into my head. Oh well. the world keeps spinning.

Bad emmc and screen here (there is a good screen and crappy one) and a flash addict. Usually don't keep a rom for more than a week. Had this phone an hour before I said screw it and rooted. I got a g1 as a backup if necc... Lol anyways, I tried cm7, battery life was amazing, super fast, but felt like it didn't fit the phone right. So I tried unity. Orgasm. Haven't flashed anything since. hacked the genius button back and got swype beta going. Perfect. Starting to get that itch though...

Give MIUI with Demonspeed kernel a shot too. Pretty much fully baked. Wouldn't require too much tinkering to get things going. Pretty much everything works right out of the box.

Rooting sisters phone, confused

So I've been debating posting this for 2 days now for worries of being called illiterate and an idiot but this is a last ditch attempt at trying to understand the rooting process for the inspire for the sake of my sister who actually owns the device and wants it rooted and a custom ROM for a possible increase in battery life & performance possibly from a ICS ROM I personally have a Samsung gs2 & galaxy tab 10.1 and am proficient in rooting and flashing stuff on those devices, but after reading for the past few days I'very come to find out that that knowledge in no way helps me here.
What I'm trying to do is root my sisters AT&T Inspire and more than likely put a customer ROM on it.
I have read a lot of stuff here and have seen a lot of terms that are not in the Samsung world of hackory such as RUU, gold card, s-off, and hboot.
So far what I understand is a gold card is a micro sdcard that is used to gain root. I was looking at using the ace hack kit, but after reading the first few pages of the thread it seems people are having problems making the goldcard, and frankly I'm having a hard time comprehending all the stuff that seems to be in solved in this process.
So basically what I'm asking is for someone to give me a summary of what is needed to be done in order to gain root and flash custom firmware on a ATT inspire that shipped with 2.3.3. If you are just gonna tell me to go read save the bandwidth and don't bother replying as I have read. I don't want to mess up her phone as she is 17 and is her lifeblood.
I realize what I'm asking is what everyone frowns upon in the xda but I haven't been able to get what I need from reading sporadic posts in threads and the sticky in the section that has a link to a rooting guide is dead. But my sister is only in town for a short while while on spring break that's why I'm in need of help fast and can't spend more time researching.

Just use the advanced ace hack kit, its the only game in town. Just make sure you read the first post and the included manual. You need to have your system setup properly. If setup properly you'll be rooted in under 10min.
As to the goldcard it depends on the SD card used. Sometimes for what ever reason one wont work. All one can do is try a different one.

link to advanced hack kit works for me - got through the thread and read the manual seriously read the manual and of course dev can be contacted through irc channel. i was in similar position when i came to inspire after jb iphones but once you do it you'll wonder what the fuss was over.

Yeah I had a similar gut feeling when I was learning to root my galaxy s2 and once I rooted it I was like wow really that's it? I spent 2 weeks reading just about everything about it and I felt pretty comfortable doing it when I did it. However after reading and trying to figure this stuff out I still feel lost. I just can't seem to comprehend the info.
There doesn't seem to be a good thread that goes over the terms used in the process. I'm sure I could follow instructions but I like to know what I'm doing and no just blindly following instructions, so if something goes wrong I can have an idea on what's going on. Im even more nervous because its not my device.

Its not as complicated as it seams just different terms used. Like how iPhones jailbreak while we root.
Ruu-stands for rom utility update. It is a self contained program to flash stock firmware. In the gs2 I believe you guys use Odin/kies to flash stock images.
Soff- our devices come as son mebaing security on. This prevents us from flashing a custom recovery,radio,any ruu.
Once we gain soff we pretty much can do anything flashing wise.
Hboot- this is our bootloader.
Gold card- is only used once, and that's during the rooting process. The kit makes your SD card into a gold card to help flash necessary files to gain soff and root

I'm gonna try to use the ace hack kit now....hope all goes well. I have a 2gb microsd card that I'm gonna use for the gold card.
EDIT: So I forgot my laptop power cord at my apartment and I'm at my aunts for Easter dinner so I'll have to do it later. Gives me more time to try and get this stuff
So if I understand correctly the ace hack kit does the whole rooting process as well as flashing a kernel repacked with cwm? The ace hack kit does the goldcard process for me? I was thinking of running the hack kit with my freshly formatted 2gb card do her data doesn't get erased, even though I guess it doesn't matter since I have everything backed up on my PC.
After I finish using the hack kit and I'm rooted w/ cwm I can flash ROMs from cwm without doing anything else correct?
I really appreciate you guys taking the time out of your holiday to help me out with this very basic stuff, its just I can't comprehend the info, and when rooting my gs2 there was an excellent step by step thread that explained everything and gave very detailed instructions on how and why you're doing what is said.

Well if you are still debating, just follow commands in the manual. A clean environment is a must and the only preparation that the Kit needs...if you are using a non corrupted sdcard and a clean environment then you should be rooted in less than 5 minutes

I'll be using a windows 7 laptop I have uninstalled avast antivirus and killed the window defender process. I don't see anything else that is required.
Also, any recommendations for ROM/Kernel combos? I'm looking for stability and battery life with everything working(mainly camera and hspa+) I was thinking of the Aospx ics ROM because AOSP ICS is amazing I'm running AOKP on my gs2 and my phone could not run better and battery is incredible.

It will depend on the use that your sis gives to the phone and if she likes sense or also. I am using coredroid and is awesome but might not be to her...the best bet is to try as many roms and then choose. Make sure if you flash a kernel that is the correct for that Rom. AOSP Kernels do not work with sense roms...
Windows 7 should work fine with the kit....if you get stuck hit the IRC channel and we will lend you a hand.

Thanks for the input! My sister doesn't really care about sense or anything...she probably doesn't even know what sense is. She just uses her phone for social networking(ie Facebook, twitter) and she plays games like scramble w/ friends and who knows what else), and texting A LOT. She needs a working camera(at least for pictures, I understand camcorder doesn't work on asopx) A sense ROM or non-sense ROM, it doesn't matter. Me personally I like the AOSP UI but again the phones not for me. I just want stability & great battery life.

So I ran the hack kit, and it worked flawlessly. I cannot believe how easy it was! Easier than rooting my gs2! I ran it on my win7 laptop...uninstalled Avast antivirus and cleared all unnecessary processes. After it was done I flashed AOKP and now her phone is running as good as my gs2. Thanks guys for your help! I just needed that little bit of confidence boost. I was in the IRC chan and Omega helped me a bit...so big thanks to him. The EFFIN Manual couldn't have been more clear.

First android phone, Desire S for 300€

Hey everyone!
Just bought my first android ( well any smartphone really ) and decided to go with this trusty HTC Desire S (294€). Even the 3.7" screen seems big to me and i couldnt imagine my self having any bigger phone than this...like most of the new models have... im in need of phone now so could'nt wait for Primo Allso the looks we're really appearing compared to One V and some sony arc minis etc... so this is it for me... This phone will be my future 3-4 years as i'm mostly used to use phone to talking..
now i wish this new phone to help me with calendar for work mostly and some www surfing&facebook&gps and camera that works and is with me when needed.
wanted to ask all of you cause this phone has been on market over year now and im all new to any smartphones that what should i do? so much inform on the pages i cant follow, witch rom/sense etc to upgrade.
i see all those roms&senses and stuff... im going to follow the newbie guide for battery optimising with tasker and stuff, but any direction what should i do to get best out of the phone...
i read the phone has gorilla glass and update to android 4.0 + sense ?
what is the use for all that rom upgrades? any trusty roms to recommend?
what is rooting and should i do it?
what is S-on S-off hboot?
So, is there on some working roms/upgrades any amazing features over the original i should be looking into?
phone is my notepad/calandar for work and facebook&camera on freetime...

Frankly, as you are new, don't get into rooting and flashing new roms, hang around the forums, read a lot about it, make yourself comfortable and then get into it.

Welcome mate!
At the very first I would suggest you to get used to your phone. Check out all stock functions, applications, settings etc. before you go the rooting way (because this is what needs to be done if you're interested in any custom ROM).
I would deal at least a week with my stock phone, there are many new things to explore
Second, after you got used to your phone a little bit, you should spend some days only reading this forums (guides, tutorials etc..). Since you want to spent the next 3-4 years with your phone I think you don't want to mess it up. Go the safe route like I did some months ago, read up what needs to be done and try to understand a little bit how things work, before you attempt to do anything.

Ok mates.. its just.... i've used to oc the hardware i own to get the juice out... i thought with all this rom etc.. the software has been tweaked to best... so its worth doing... i'll be hanging here for sure a long time so no hurry... just anxious to learn what the phone is capable...

Go to the general and dev section, read all the stickies in both then mod away, uta your phone after all. If in doubt search on the forum and good then ask on here, following all the stickies u should have access to fool proof info but if your ever having problems there is almost always someone online who can help
