[Q] gingerbread missing smart dial & save contacts to phone - General Topics

I recently installed the Oxygen gingerbread rom on my HTC Desire, the first thing i noticed was that it is missing "smart dial" function (where you go to "Phone" and it gives you a keyboard to quickly filter contacts, image attached to thread)
( i have since switched back to 2.2)
Does anyone know if they plan on putting this back in? It is probably the single most handy part of the android OS.
Also, i also could not save contacts to "phone" , it didnt give me the option, is this taken out in gingerbread also?
Cheers for the help.

A lot of the roms like cyanogenmod and stock roms do not include smart dialling apps like HTC's. There are third party apps you can get such as dialer one and youlu.

[Request] - Stock 3D Gallery and DeskClock

So I will try to organize this thread so most important stuff (request) is on top, and my rant/explanation of why I want this done will follow. Warning: I know I tend to use a lot of run-on sentences...I'm just long winded
Attached are two stock (I presume) .apk's that I pulled out of Cyanogen's ROM that I have installed on my stock 2.1 ROM. I prefer these two apps vs. the HTC versions, but each have one small issue.
1) - DeskClock.apk will FC if you hit the Music shortcut. I am assuming that this is something simple, like it's trying to call up the wrong program? Can this be written to launch the HTC Music App, hopefully eliminating the FC?
2) - Gallery3D will FC if you try to launch the camera from within the app. I am once again assuming (more hoping, really) that it's trying to launch a camera app that doesn't exist in the stock ROM. Can this be written to launch the HTC Camera app, hopefully eliminating the FC?
I would try myself, but after downloading and installing Eclipse, JRE and the Android plug-in, I still feel like this is over my head at this point, as all I have is very limited Visual Basic experience. Would someone mind doing me a favor and updating those apps are reposting them in this thread so that myself and other like me can use those on our stock 2.1 ROMs? It would be much appreciated
Now for the rant:
I see a lot of people with differing opinions on HTC's Sense. Personally, this is my first Android phone, and I have found that I actually like SOME of the Sense apps. I dont really have a problem with the launcher (though I have replaeced it with ADW.Launcher), and I feel that apps such as People, Camera, and Phone are somewhat superior to what I presume are the stock Contacts, Camera and Phone apps, respectively. And then I wonder why HTC created some of the other apps they did that seem somewhat....lacking.
1) The "Photos" app is very boring and plain. I mean, I appreciate the Flickr and Facebook integration (which would be useful IF I used them), but why could they not have just added this functionality to the already awesome 3D Gallery? I would rather use the stock Gallery app, and even though the file I attached (see:Gallery3D.apk) doesn't have a functioning camera botton, I still prefer it to the Photo app. Plus, it pulls in my Picasa photo albums
2) The DeskClock app HTC included on the incredible is fine for the most part, but I don't like the small clock font and the fact that it takes FOREVER to launch, whereas the stock DeskClock.apk is instant to load, has a much larger font, and does other things I like better; like keeping my wallpaper visible, and is softer to the eye. Once again, I appreciate the added features of HTC's clock (Worldclock, Stopwatch, Timer), but I don't use them enough to make me like this program more than the stock one.
So that is why I am asking for those to be edited so they'll run on my stock ROM. At least until we start seeing some FroYo love
Also, if anybody knows, why did HTC replace the Messages app with one that exchanges the ability to set conversation limits (e.g. 200 messages, then auto delete) with one that uses Facebook for contact icons? I still use the HTC Messages app cause I like the pictures transferring over from Facebook (or the People app, which is updated by Facebook, and hence why the People app I like BETTER than stock), but why leave out any message bulk control? Anything over two or three hundred and my phone really starts taking a long time to open the conversation...
Alternately, once CyanogenMod's ROM becomes more stable, I would love to switch to it if I could bring some of the Sense apps along. Those would be:
1) People - with fully functioning updates and photo shortcuts to Facebook and Flickr
2) Camera - I like the added features...and the fact that it already supports 8MP, whereas (as of CM5.0.8 Test1, anyway), the camera app would only do 3MP
3) Phone - again, with correctly synchronizing contact pictures and speed dial, just like in our stock ROM.
I haven't actually tried pulling these out of the stock ROM and installing them in CM5, but I'm assuming I'd run into issues with the Facebook/Flickr sync...

attached is a gallery apk that doesn't have the camera issue. and also I attached the stock music apk that is need for deskclock.
Anything from Sense requires the htc framework which you are not going to find in any Cyanogen or vanilla ROM and there is no work around.
The vanilla DeskClock apk (with working music button) and 3D Gallery (with working camera button) already exist in other threads in this forum. Just search for them. You will also find both of those apps in any plain vanilla or cyanogen rom that is made.
As for the phone and contacts, the vanilla ones are much better imo than sense. You will not miss the lag.

Thanks jitajt! Those fixed my problems. Im getting to the point where I'm fairly satisfied with everything about the phone. Just got Hydra's OCUV+N kernel installed and it's working great.
I have the opposite request of this thread actually; I need the HTC DeskClock files from a stock 2.1 sense ROM. Would anyone be able to post it please? Thank you in advance!
I miss having the timer and stop watch functionality that comes with it. My laundry always winds up sitting in the washer and dryer far too long without me setting a timer
Hello. I did a search for AOSP DeskClock and this is the only promising thread I found. I'm using an HTC CDMA Hero. Does anyone know if this is or isn't safe for me to use?
Also, do I just push to /system/app?
I don't know about you guys.. but the sense gallery loads up MUCH FASTER than this gallery 3D. UNINSTALLED
I have both apps in my rom and are runing fine

Camera FC
Hey Thanks jitajt!
I've been trying to get this to work on my samsung spica for a few days now.
But now the camera button (upper right) is giving me an FC error. It's because the camer app I have is SamsungCamera.apk NOT the stock camera app.
Could you provide the stock camera.apk for android 2.1?
Thanks.

Native Froyo 2.2 Dialer apk??

I actually like the stock android dialer as well, bump!
Me three!!!
Is it like the htc sense lock screen where you just change the name/move/remove the htc lock screen apk and the stock android lock screen comes up?

Nvm it doesn't work, wishful thinking on my part I guess...or I couldn't get it to work anyway...which isn't saying much...

You can't use the native android dialer becasue the HTC dialer is intergrated in the OS so you can't replace it.
but couldn't you just install the apk and then when hitting the phone button it would give the option of which to use? much like the 3g gallery apk. or is that different because the one is a system app and the other isn't?.. I only ask because I would love to do the same to my DInc.

Hey all, I am new here and Andriod newbie, but learning quickly ...
(I originally bumped this post because of same question, but after I did more and more research I finally realized a full ROM swap is the only way... I wanted to leave this post for other's with the same question that search and run across this thread... THANKS XDA !!!)
(Original post):
The "stock" Android dialer is all I want. Basically, I dont have to "replace" the HTC dialer but I want a different dialer available, and I like the Native android froyo one ...
So, I installed the 2.2 froyo SDK (which conains the basic stock dialer) and used command line abd root to pull Phone.apk from the package. I then copied it to my (Rooted) device and tried running it. I get the error:
com.android.phone, activity not found.
Obviously, that didnt work... So Im assuming like you said, its also integrated into the OS, so the entire ROM would be needed.
(Update / edited post)
No, there is not 'easy market dialer app' that replaces your phone application... Maybe the dialer front, but not the phone.
There are many cool ROMS floating around with better dialers. Read, read, read, do your research, and take the dive.

[Q] Sense-Like Contacts

I'm currently using Gingerbread Sense Rom for my DHD, however the only reason I use it is for the Facebook integration, the style of the message app is nice but not dissimilar to the stock app and the rest is quite similar or easily replaceable.
Is there an app I'm not aware of that recreates the Sense functionality for non-Sense roms? Would rather use CM7 Nightlies but I do like the contacts and Facebook integration.
Though it us not very sense like, try "go contacts". It is miui like and actually very good
Sent from my glacier using XDA App
Truthfully the design doesn't bother me it's the Facebook integration (automatic pictures and statuses), the auto-linking contacts based on name etc
If you purchase Launcher Pro they have numerous "sense-like" widgets including one for contacts. There is also a free app on the Market called Photo Contracts widget that is similar.
........
Thanks, Colorize does a similar thing too but is there nothing that replicates just how integrated Facebook is with Sense UI? The official Facebook app itself is awful with contacts so I recall... It's nice to just have pictures automatically updates (SyncMyPix is fine but it to be done automatically without extra apps is far better!)
Hi chrisa86,
I'm totally with you. Yesterday I flashed CyanogenMod on my Desire. Coming from a sense-based ROM, specially the Contacts App is a pain. I want my nice and clear list with links and Facebook back!
I don't mind Widgets, because I'm using Launcher Pro, but the App itself.
So far, I tried Youlu, but is it more at the stock side than on the Sense side
Unfortunately, there is nothing like the Facebook integration in Sense. And the latest Gingerbread update even went back in terms of the Facebook/Android connexions.
That's the only thing I miss from Sense ROMS actually...
Yes, I just flashed Redux rom (which is very good by the way) to try gingerbread, and I'm badly missing the HTC contacts as well.
Additionally from facebook integration, there's also something missing: the ability to type a person name's directly from the dialer (aka Smart Dial : http://www.mobisleapps.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Screen-shot-2010-01-12-at-4.16.47-PM.png)
Any workarounds ?
Dialer One in the market has smart dial. You can set that as your default phone app.
Yep, I should have done more research before asking. I just realized that there are numerous alternative dialers.
However, to get back to the OP question, nothing like sense contacts (for facebook sync) at the moment, right ?

cm7 keyboard and phone

can anyone let me know if there is a way to add the stock htc keyboard and phone on this rom?
The keyb that came with the rom is extremely difficult to type with, and the phone app, in order to dial a number i have to go to phone, then contacts, then search ...
while on the stock phone app you just only type the first letters of the name of the person and dial...
thks
Smart keyboard and smart keyboard Pro are very comparable to the HTC keyboard. I however, recommend using Swype. As for the search I use the Google Search / search button on my phone to search for contacts. Then when selected it brings up their contact card and can call / SMS from there.
Do a search for HTC ime keyboard I haven't tried it on CM7 but I know it works on other non sense roms.

No no HTC software will work on CM based roms due to missing and replaced drivers and framework files

He means it will not work. Confusing grammar
One dialer is similar to the htc one in that it has predictive dialing or whatever it's called... It's lighter than the other alternatives i've tried too. As for keyboard, i keep coming back to swift keyboard x. Highly customizable and better layout than htc. I can't type more quickly on this than on anything else.
Cheers

Do a search for HTC_IMEI Mod Keyboard in the Market. It is a version of the HTC keyboard from one of the Verizon HTC Droid phones. I've used it on both CM7 and Sense ROMs. Swype is a good one that seems similar to the HTC keyboard also.
I keep going back to Go keyboard. It's free and has some great features (arrows for navigation, keypad, etc).

Can I install stock HTC One X apps on Cyanogen rom?

I recently entered the custom Rom arena and am loving my new found freedom.
I've currently got CyanogenMod 10.1 installed and everything is going pretty well.
Excuse my simple question if it's been answered here already (I did search hard first), but can anyone tell me:
Can I load some stock HOX apps like Mail, Car Mode and the stock touchscreen into custom roms?
I especially doubt the last one is an option but it is way ahead of the Cyanogen lockscreen in my opinion. Well it is in my case where my company policy forces the password lock via Exchange meaning in Cyanogen I can't choose an app from the lockscreen to open as the numpad replaces the app icons along the bottom. On stock HTC they are there and can be dragged into the "ring" to open them (admittedly the numpad appears before app opens but it's still faster to jump into an app than Cyanogen method).
Apart from that I really like the HTC mail app. It runs rings around K9 and the Cyanogen mail app so I would love to know if I can install some of the HTC stock apps and have the best of both worlds.
Thanks.
