Looks exactly like a G-Tab. Right down to T-N-T.

its funny how a tech blog doesnt catch that they keep posting stories about the exact same tablet with a different label on it

New Cruz Tablet

I think we should have a section for the new Cruz Tablet. Good specs and $299 on sale at Best Buy I think alot of us will be picking this up. Also the new Viewsonic Dual boot tablet looks interesting as well.
I'm getting pretty interested in this, a little apprehensive about picking up a tablet that hasn't been rooted yet, but I've been spending a lot of time learning the android kernel and studying other root exploits, might be fun to have a fresh "slate" to work with
EDIT:
Fuggit, just put one on my credit card. I'll post when I get it. First order of business will be getting the real deal market working on it, I'm gonna look into it while it ships.
I was interested in this as well, but now I'm a little nervous. I've been to two Borders Books in my area and at the first one the eBook version worked but the tablet was dead. The sales guy said it just stopped working one day. Okay.....
So then I went to another one and the eBook was dead and they didn't have a tablet on display. Hmmm......
Then about a week past and I found myself in the first Border's again and their eBook version was dead and the tablet display was gone.
Oh, and my pre-order for the tablet was canceled by Borders. No reason given.
so I think I'll hold off on this one...seems they have some quality control issues going on...
Needs froyo
Just picked it up and its nice but without froyo I think I will return for the Archos 70 when it comes out.
cross install
seems im able to install most programs from the market and most work no problem.
Launcher pro
Launcher pro works great.
Hey guys, what is the processor listed at for The Cruz Tablet, it has never been posted on their website? My hope is its not an ARM11 cause then upgrading to froyo 2.2 will be unlikely with working FLASH.

I picked up a CRUZ Tablet from SEARS yesterday...
I was really looking for a Viewsonic G-Tablet but couldn't find any SEARS in the tri-state area with them in stock.
Here are my initial thoughts on the CRUZ:
nice screen
snappy processor
mine came with 2x 8GB SDHC cards
decent (loud) speakers
good battery (rated at 10 hours but haven't had time to test this)
rubbery back cover makes it easy to hold (or prop upright on desk)
capacitive home/menu/back buttons are SUPER sensitive
has dedicated volume rocker
has dock connector (but no accessories yet)
It's missing market and sync but I've been side-loading with reasonable success. It's running 2.0 so many applications will not install (Angry Birds, FBreader, etc.)
2.0? Not even 2.1? Ugh. I was afraid of that.
Any idea what the CPU is? Hopefully not Telechips.
Hoping for a decent CPU as well. trying to decide if I should keep the ViewSonic or get this one.
need root
We need to get 2.2 on this thing!! Could be great with some help

Archos 70 might have a better CPU but after a little digging I found that the cruz tablet has a lot more RAM. I can't find it now, and the archos site doesn't list the memory under specs but I remember it trumping the 70 in some way. Would really like to know what that damn cpu is, anyone get a busybox on there yet? lshw is in busybox right?
/shrug I been hearing good things. Had to put off getting mine but I'm up for some froyo or cyanogen porting.
We need a #cruz-dev irc, anyone wanna set one up? I think you can just start a room on freenode can't you?
How did you get market installed?
Here is info about the processor on the Cruz Tablet: MyTabletLife.com
Its not an ARM chip, its MIPS. Android is ported over.. 2.2 will be possible, and Flash at some point. Just all development will run behind, as its ported. Its a powerful processor, but I am not sure this was a good move. Randy on MyTabletLife found out some games wont install and say "incorrect CPU".. Could be lots of issues here.

Here is a video review of the Cruz tablet. Don't be to rough on me it's my first video review.
Cruz Video Review
I'm pretty sure the Tegra cpu in the Viewsonic easily trumps the cpu VM chose for the CRUZ.
I guess I just had bad luck with this then. I bought one at Best Buy and got home and started playing with it. After about 15 minutes of browsing the web, the screen went all-white and if I "flexed" the device slightly it would come back to normal. Obviously there was a short in the LCD wiring. I exchanged it for another only to find out that that one would not hold a charge. After an hour of being plugged in and not used it still said "Charging: 0%".
I promptly returned it instead of another exchange. The way I see it if I had two of these tablets and each of them had a different, fatal hardware issue I wasn't going to risk a third attempt.
I ordered a Viewsonic G Pad from Sears in spite of the bad reviews of the software. The Hardware specs read like a dream for a <$400 device and there are already Devs working to address the software issues.
With all these tablets coming out now. I see no here as mentioned Coby KYROS.
The Coby KYROS has a resistive screen

Staples Issues an apology on the G Tablet

Pulled from Engadget site
In case you missed it, this weekend Staples announced that it was no longer offering the 10.1-inch Viewsonic G Tablet because of a "manufacturing defect." Well, as it turns out, Viewsonic is claiming there's really no hardware defect at all -- instead, the manufacturer of the Android 2.2, Tegra 2-powered tablet is reporting that there's really a "user experience issue." Nope, that doesn't sound much better, but according to Viewsonic's VP of Marketing Adam Hanin, the G Tablet saw a fair number of returns because of its sluggish software experience, which was caused by the preloaded Tap and Tap Android layer. A number of issues were also caused by the lack of Flash, which Adobe hasn't yet certified for Tegra 2 (we hear that's finally coming at the end of January). "We believe it is the user experience that caused all the returns, and we are taking important steps forward with the G Tablet," Hanin told us.
So, what are those steps exactly? Viewsonic will be releasing an over-the-air software update before the end of the week and will also provide links for users to manually download and install a beta version of Flash on its support page. Naturally, we asked Hanin why the G Tablet was shipped in this half-finished state at all -- he told us that while Android and Tegra are great platforms, Google's lack of support for larger devices means that companies like Viewsonic have to "go out and put together their own software and app stores." We're not sure that's a great answer -- in fact, it sort of sounds like Viewsonic is trying to blame Google, Adobe, and NVIDIA for its own half-finished and laggy software, when it released the tablet on its accord own to retailers. Either way, we've now seen more than enough terrible "user experience" issues on the early crop of Android tablets
Wheres the apology?
Anyone else see engaget as fairly biased against the gtablet?
Engadget is biased to anything not sold by Apple. It's been like that for a while. Despite this, they're still the ones to beat as a tech blog so I just ignore the snarky condescending tone they use while reviewing any and all products that compete with Apple's and enjoy the funny commentary by writers and reader alike, as well as appreciate (for the most part) the information they share and news they break.
Endgadget(applefanboysrus.com) are A-Holes anyway, they are mad that Apple products can't pull away from Android, poor steve jobs can't catch a break, make a phone, android makes it better, make a tablet, android will own that market too.

Ars Technica is pretty much this way now as well, might as well change their name to Apple Centrica
Viewsonic gambled on the early release of the g tablet and lost. The software
wasn't ready. I got to blame the QA group that works for Viewsonic. They
should know people expect it to work out of box. Slow response to touches,
tap n tap ... looked nice but needed to be quicker. The lack of adobe flash
and market place also was a let down. QA should have just said, " NO ". An
made them fix the tap n tap interface and the other issues before releasing
the g tablet.
The biggest issue is the display screen for the device. They need to release
a better display with better viewing angles. If you have to call the people
that make the displays for Apples iPad .. Having the hardware of the
Viewsonic g tablet with the iPad display would ROCK ..
Time to make some donuts ...

Screen is bad, but biggest issue by far is the alpha quality UI OOB... just doesn't fly for most consumers.
I think that flash & market support are overrated for most consumers as well. Having flash as a later update is fine as it'll eventually be released by Adobe for Tegra 2, but market? Just too many alternatives, and so far I could've done with no market at all as everything that I've installed so far is available directly from the dev as well as the market...

Gotta agree here. First thing you notice when you pull this thing out of the box is the force close issues, the clock timezone wont stay, its unresponsive and slow. In a world where people demand instant gratification, no one wants to wait for the next update or "fix" becuase it shouldnt need to be fixed in the first place. If I didnt know any better and took my G tab out of the box, I'd be running back to Sears to return it.

You mean like having to hold your phone a particular way or you wouldn't have any signal?
No people are very patient as long as they are informed about what is happening.
My question is why should Staples apologize? I think everyone here has to admit that out of the box this device had a lot of issues. Your average consumer probably wouldn't even call Viewsonic tech support, but instead would just take it back to the store. I'd imagine the return rate was pretty horrific, so why in the world would Staples want to apologize for pulling an item that I'm sure to the non-technical appears to have hardware issues?

I'll be the first to admit the Gtab is far from perfect, but calling it a hardware defect is blatantly false.
To a non-technical person if you bought a tablet opened it up and it did say an update and then boot-looped and the only solution was to send it to Viewsonic for repair, that would make them think it was a hardware problem.

CES and the G tablet

So this last week I went down to CES and was pretty supprises by all of the android tablets that are going to be released. Hands down I really think that the gtablet is one slick device. Some of the other tablets felt really cheap, screens were pretty bad, not as many options(usb, micro sd, 16gb) and as far as sofware I saw a lot of FC's on the devices I played with.
The second thing that I did was head over to the Vewsonic display and saw their full line of tables, the viewpad 7, the multiboot viewpad 10 and the Gtablet. On thing that really go me attention is that I knew more about the gtab than any of the people that I talked to. All they could say was have you done the upgrade yet? It really makes this device a lot better. My follow up was I have been running the custom roms since day one, I was even kind enough to pull mine out and boot it up for them. That was kind of funny because I no longer have the Viewsonic boot screen I have replaced it with the Nvida tegra logo and then the gtab devs logo pops up and then a custom andorid animation. After that they went right into have you seen the new viewpad 10, and that's were I found most of their knowledge was, and that's what they wanted to talk about after that.
I did ask about a dock and they said it was coming soon, I saw a different verison of the dock that has been posted in the xda forums but plugging it into the bottom of the gtablet didn't seem to make any changes, I'm guessing because it wasn't hooked up.
At the end of the show I have no regrets about buying the gtablet and buy far I would have put it against any other tablet there and been confident that it would smoke them all. It was also kind of fun to wip it out and show it off to any one that wanted to talk about android tablets. I could see a lot of vendors kind of shake in there boots when I talked about every thing I could do with it.
Awesome! Thanks for the write up. I'm glad to see that even though it was at the forefront of the pack being released, it is still a leader with all the other tablets being released this year.
Some peope were speculating that the g-tablet would be outdated by first quarter 2011... Now it seems not, which makes me happy. I don't have money to replace 2 tabs every couple of quarters.
THANKS.

Did you get a chance to ask Viewsonic booth personnel about availability of Honeycomb for the G Tablet?
I didn't get a chance to go to CES but I had a feeling this is how it would turn out. The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of tegra2 tablets with better screens LOL.... I want an upgraded screen in this sucker LOL.
No biggy ... everyone still thinks my gtab is bad ass... now all we need is to get Ubuntu 10.10 running on this thing.

I did ask about the honeycomb upgrade and I got the deer in the Headlights look, followed by a lets find so and so they will know better, and we never found so and so. But they did swipe my card and told me somone would contact me.
I did how ever put in a pitch for my place of employment to see if I could get some demo's now that the world of tablets are knocking at our door.
Buy far there was a lack of tegra 2 tablets and even with the screen issues that the Gtab has we should feel lucky because most other tablets just sucked.

That's the one thing I'm hunting for. Whoever comes out with a Tegra device with an IPS screen is going to get my money.

can anyone suggest a decent 7" tab for my son?

looking for a cheap 7" tab for my son. zt 180? any thoughts. Just looking for something to put kindle on and allow him to play some games and music.
thanks
zt 180?
I would reccommend the NookColor($250), I'm thinking about getting one after I sell My GTab. Want to see about the Flyer as well.
Nook Color also has a good developer community backing. Pretty easy root from what I've heard.
The Vpad7 is pretty good. It received some crap reviews but only because its an older arm processor and not Tehran based. It is one of the most functional devices I have used out of the box and has very little bloatware installed on it. Over all its a sound device and very functional. I gave mine to my dad for use as a book reader and it is perfect for what he needed.
I've been meaning to ask the same question myself.
The Viewpad 7 seems ok, but it costs more than a Gtab doesn't it?
The Nook is a little tempting, but I think I'm a little spoiled by the Gtab ...
Would be interested to see what others suggest/recommend.
Jim
I can appreciate what you're saying. The NC, to me, just "feels better constructed" than some others I have handled. Solid. Add in that there is an excellent developer base and active community and it would be an excellent choice for now and into the future. ("Future" being a relative term for tech!) Much would depend on what the intended use would be of course. The dual boot Viewpad is great IF you absolutely need windows. (Note I said "need" and not "want"). I suspect the NC would serve your son well and provide him a nice "starter platform" as he grows and wants to move up.
HTH
+1 on any Nook Color recommendations. Well constructed, SDmicro slot, and we already know its capable of honeycomb. ***Deleted 3G incorrect info ***
i was asking about cheapo china ones. I realize they aren't up to gtab specs but just wanted something basic for him.

No offense to China but don't do it! haha. At least get him something where you can return it easily if it's defective.
Get the Coby Kyros 7015 for your son. You can find it at retail stores like Frys.
Velocity Cruz any good? I can get one for $100
I do believe that with the Cruz you're starting hobbled in a way. The Reader and the Tab run 2.0 and not Froyo so flash would be just one thing missing. I know only one person who got one and returned it same week. And if you "choose" (read: fall for) ordering direct from China be ready to wait.....and wait.......and wait....for delivery. I ordered a replacement AC adapter over a month ago...guess? Waited over a month then cancelled. Seems it's ALWAYS Chinese New Year there slowing the mail.
Edit - Spring for the NC. You (and son) won't be disappointed I'm betting.
I was also in your shoes - wanted a 7" device for my father while he was doing his dialysis treatments. Basically I was looking for something a little better than just a reader. I was in Kmart and saw the Coby 7015 and got it for about $150 on black friday. I thought it was a cool little box it ran about everything, had HDMI out and good battery life. The downside - resistive touch screen. Resistive touch will have you begging for a capacitive touch screen. Resistive touch is okay for a mfg environment or a GPS device - but for a daily tablet NO. You keep wondering if you pressed hard enough. Also Angry birds runs but screen fonts are broken - meaning they do not display correctly. I rooted the thing with Z4root and loaded just about everything and used Zeam as desktop. Because of the liberal return policy during the holidays I un-rooted it and brought it back to stock state and then returned at Kmart with no restocking fee.
Velocity Cruz - This is a joke. The app store is not even an appstore but a website. It has 2.0 and no chance for 2.1 based on lack of Arm processor. I cruised forums for a hack or roms - none. Good thing about it - it has a capacitive touch screen. Returned to Best Buy and no restocking fee.
Barnes and Noble Color Nook. Bought rooted and kept for my dad. Great little cool design and battery life is great. Used nookie boot image to root it and loaded Zeam for the desktop and a bunch of apps for my dad besides ereader apps. Other positives for the NC is has support here at XDA and the NC wikis out there.
Bottom line NC is the best deal for $250. Sure I got a chance to play with others and learned what I liked and what I did not like - but the form factor, weight, and size are good for a android device that was just suppose to be a reader with some other light functions. You will not be disappointed with this device.
PS - also tried like hell to get Archos 70 but you could never get stock. They sold out or never had inventory. The Archos 7" tablets in store were with the "home tablets" versions with Android 1.5. The Archos 70 would have been easier to hack but the NC was available with inventory at launch. I personally own 2 gtablets in my family and with the support of XDA - they have become great devices. Also have an IPAD(jail broken) - love and hate it - especially hate having to use iTunes to get content on the thing.
I would check craigslist for the NC as well you may find someone who bought one thinking it was going to be better than the kindle and wants to get rid of it.
Another positive for the NOOK is accessories, that was one thing with the GTab, hard to find accessories. I mean the nook color is for sale at walmart and is from a big mftr so accessories should be easy to find. You might read up on what apps it comes with too, it seems like I remember some stock apps geared towards kids.
lol...can i run kindle on NC? I really want kindle because my wife has an account and i want my son to be able to use her account to buy books.

Yes - Market is there and therefore the kindle app is there as well.
Check HH Gregg, I saw a 7" tab there as closeout for $99.00 can't remember what the model was.
For the Money, I'd have to agree that the Nook Color is the best deal in 7" right now...
The IPS screen is lovely and it is fairly simple to hack and get the Market on it...It's even been overclocked...
Nook Color is hands down the best 7" tab option simply because of the ips screen. Name another sub 400$ device with an ips screen?
I want a Nook Color so bad, does anyone know if it runs Honeycomb well? the only reason i want Honeycomb is because Nookiefroyo doesnt have softkeys.... Or does it?

As the Nook Color has only one button on the face (beside the Vol Up/Down on the edge), I believe it is all soft buttons and not re-mapping...
fyi. If you have decided to buy the nook color, it is on sale in Ebay only $199.

XDA Developers Put GTablet Back on The Map!! You Guys made the New!!

Congrats to our Developers for Putting the GTablet back on the Map!!! Heres an article that posted about you guys-----GREAT JOB GUYS!!
The G Tablet hasn't been getting much attention of late, slowly fading into obscurity as newer and fancier slates come floating on down the river. Now, thanks to XDA member pershoot, Viewsonic's Tegra 2 tab has a little extra spring in its step. He's managed to get it running at 1.4GHz (a 40 percent boost over stock) and, with the ability to run CyanogenMod 7, this 10.1-incher is definitely earning a reputation as something of a hacker's delight. Now it's even easier to afford, too, with Amazon knocking the price down to $280. Cheap and tweakable? Really, it doesn't get any better than that.
This was Posted today on Engadget: Again Congrats Guys!!! I really Love my Gtab thanks to you Guys!!!

I just read that
i just read that with a smile on face... only our great devs could do that
"Love all your devs, and they will love you back"
It's a shame that engadget is such a terrible place. Trolls, fanboys and idiots, at least their comments system anwyays.
Nice to see Pershoot get the credit he deserves, the guy is a monster!
It's about time that Engadget gave the GTAB a nod
Glad to see this, and hat's off to pershoot (and all the other devs here - gojimi, rothnic, clem and the rest) for a job well done.
You have no idea how annoyed I've been at the GTAB's "black sheep" status, there. Good to see some positive press for once.
wow, there are some fanboys douchers on the comments page.
I can't believe there are people calling it "crap" in the comments A sub-$300 tablet with a capacitive screen and the innards that this thing has is crap? Screen can be terrible at the wrong angles, but otherwise it's a hell of a bargain. So much so that I have a very exhausting love/hate with this damn thing, one day I want to get rid of it, next day I say, "Aww, you're not so bad, and you came cheap!"
Damn you, Transformer. Damn you to hell!
most people calling it crap are iFans who can't fathom paying less than $500 for a quality piece of hardware - let alone the idea that someone would WANT to tinker with the software (God forbid someone hacks - King Jobs would have my head!)
We still cannot rest we need to keep on Nvidia and VS until they can give us the drivers. other wise we may get shuffled on the back burner. and left to boil over. if we can get nvidia to give us the drivers we can get our custom roms going much faster then VS can and they seem to see what we are doing anyway and incorporate it into their design.

A gTablet developer mentioned yesterday that Nvidia has already been in contact with them, starting a dialog. So the process has begun.
I just hope it continues.
All good news for grab owners, as this will keep the pressure on for further development! Also with the positive press on the device I think it will keep everyone motivated on all sides! Thanks goes out to ALL devs!

Steve Jobs reads engadget they did an article on market watch it is on his reading list. The fanboys are always where there is discussion of other products of those not interested in ianything, like snakes in the garden of eden, wanting others to bite the apple.
This was a sleeper tablet and it was written off early by reviewers who obviously had stock in Apple. For it to be backed up by consumer support and flying off shelves 6 months later what you see is shock and awe on their faces. CNet has revised there GTab video 3 or 4 times, in fact they throw one up on youtube every 15 days with their logo slapped on the screen as hoping to motivate folks to visit the site.
If you have noticed every tablet that has launched that is not ipad is given bad reviews. They will find something wrong with transformer. Yesterday's reviews of Blackberry a first gen product was uncalled for. What happen to neutral reviews? Meanwhile Jobs is patching up problems with ipad 2 by the boatload, a second gen product with little bad press.

Its funny because of the psychology of the press:
Case 1: Apple iDevice
The iDevice is released with bugs. The press hypes the device, conveniently ignores bugs.
6 months later, Apple releases a patch that fixes the bugs. When the patch is released, the press lauds Apple, the device, and the iOS for all the bugs they fixed and the great support.
Case 2: Android device
An android device by Manufacturer A is released with bugs. The press hypes the device, conveniently ignores bugs.
**2 weeks later, the bugs are fixed by the dev community.
Press criticizes not just Manufacturer A, but the device, Google, the android OS (and by extension all android devices) for a flaw that can "only be fixed if you hack your device and void the warranty." The iFans descend to attack android and suggest that iOS is better than Android because Apple fixed the bug instead of hackers (conveniently ignoring that it took Apple 6 months to fix the iDevice bugs vs the 2 weeks the community took to fix the android device bugs).
6 months after launch, Manufacturer A releases a patch that fixes the bugs that were addressed by the community months ago. Nothing appears in the press because they have moved on to hype and then attack the newest generation of android devices. In attacking the newer devices they point out the unresolved bugs and compare to the lack of bugs from the iDevice (released over 6 months ago), neglecting to point out that the iDevice was also launched with bugs and features older and slower hardware. For the rest of the story go (back) to **.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I think it will be easier to decide once the Transformer release date and pricing is officially announced. Can't beat the price of the G Tab but I think I'd be willing to pay the extra money for a good screen and honeycomb if all the rumors are correct.
