While trying out various ROMs, I found the same problem on two ROMs:
sms works fine unless I want to send one to Page Plus for an account status report.
In the "To:" field, as soon as I enter "xxx.com", a quick popup notifies me the sms is being changed to an mms. There seems to be no reason for this as the content is simply "bal" in the title field, then I "send".
Furthermore, the mms freezes during sending and never transmits at all.
with a bit of testing I see that as soon as I enter a (dot) and "c" in the "To:" field, the message changes. It will revert back if I delete those characters.
It is completely unrelated to long text messages(- the only discussions I can find on the subject). It "autoconverts" before I have started entering a message at all.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Have I missed a fix for this?
Thanks for any ideas. This is unfortunately a problem on my favorite ROM of all.

My Niki is getting a little, er, awkward at handling MMS at the moment, I'll explain :
It does seem incredibly slow at downloading/opening MMS, and invariably the messages are nothing more than plain text (some friends who have bizarre text plans).
I can be in the middle of writing a text message, and then an incoming (text) MMS is received, and the phone is basically useless whilst the message is coming in.
And earlier it decided that it wasn't going to open any of the MMS that had been received this morning, would only open SMS.
Left it for a few minutes, no change, so decided to do a full power off reboot. Started back up again, and it had deleted all the messages that had been received in the last 10 or so minutes.
Any suggestions on what I could do to improve the general SMS/MMS handling? The phone is running on the stock Orange rom.
ps. please don't suggest using pocketcm instead - it doesn't seem to be able to send SMS at all on my Niki
I've tried with "search" but I cannot match the keyword ....
So, there was a time when restoring your contacts from pimbackup was harmful to the sms app, I cannot send text message longer than 160 chars (I can send them, no errors, but they are not received)
Anyone knows how to solve this issue? I've this bug on my HD2 from various roms, so, I think that it's related with the stored contacts
Maybe there's something with the tags that HTC Sense stores in the "notes" tab of each contact, in this case, there is a way to wipe all the notes of each contact automatically?
Oh yes you can!!!
As far as I know, it's nothing to do with you having imported contacts etc. from PIMbackup......it's just the way it goes....
By default, the messaging application is set to "use Unicode when necessary" which results in long messages being broken into several chunks of 160 characters or less. The messages are delivered (eventually) to the recipient, but their order is not guaranteed.
To "fix" the problem, go to the Messaging tab, tap All Messages, then Menu, then Settings, then Options and un-tick the "Use Unicode when necessary" option, tap Done.....and that's it - problem "fixed"!!
Now, when you send a long message, it is sent as a whole message to your network where it is broken up into 160 char chunks before being sent. The recipient, assuming their network supports long SMS messages, receives your message just as you sent it.
Hope that helps,
Mark.
PS. There is some sort of history to this "feature"; back in days of the HTC Hermes (and others), having Unicode switched on meant that you could only send 70 characters even though the messaging app thought you'd used 160 characters. People were sending a 150 char message and getting charged for three messages - two of 70 chars and one of 10 chars....
Thanks man;
My network supports long sms, but I can't seem to be able to send them anyway :/
I'll make another test
Edit: Nope, no luck, they are not received, and the target can receive sms longer than 160chars, for sure
I am SURE that there was a bug with restoring contacts with some sense/manila bug, I've read about it right here, on XDA
Sorry for the double post, but I've foud out that it's an issue with stored contacts;
I've tried to send an sms to myself, and I received it with no problems...
I too am facing the this issue (HTC HD2 TMOUS) with sending sms more than 160 characters. this is not related to stored contacts in my case.
I did a hard reset and tried to send a sms more than 160 characters still facing same issue. I tried with 3 different Network Operators, still the same persists. However I have no problem with sending sms lesser than 160 characters. Anyone found a fix for this ?
P.S.: I know its a old thread, but... no fix yet.
I've tried many ROMs, and except the stock ROM, mms always locks up with an endless upload- I've come back next day to see that the phone is still 'sending' the mms. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix to this?
A couple of possible clues to the problem:
I cannot include even a partial example below since xda interprets it as an attempt to add a web link in my posting. So I merely spell ampersand in the hope that I can get this question posted. Arggh!
I commonly send a sms to a page plus dealer to get my current account status, and I see that as soon as the phone detects that I am sending a sms to a website (meaning that when I include an ampersand in the "To:" field...), the phone gives me a popup 'converting message to mms'. It 'converts' regardless of any/no content in the sms.
I can send sms endlessly with no problems, so long as I dont include the ampersand in the "To:" field.
I'd appreciate any help with this issue. I love running GSB 2.1 GingerShedBread and some of the other roms, but kindof need sms working properly.
I hope this is in the right forum...
Thanks.

I wondered whether anyone else has seen this behaviour in the Stock SMS messaging app.
To set the scene I have a Vodafone Branded Sensation with the latest OTA applied.
When I create large text messages, so over 500 Characters which splits into 4 messages, I try and use a Google contact GROUP as the recipient. When I do this just before I click send I get the dreaded message "mms app has stop responding and needs to be forced closed".
I have no other option than to hit close, this then forces the app down and also doesn't save my mammoth message I just ticked in!!
Anybody else seen this happen, I swear it was working pre the OTA update!!??
EDIT: The same behaviour happens with Handcent SMS, which makes me think something more sinister is going on here!
First, I have checked in threads and dint find answer.
Second, HTC is rooted, using NextGen 1.5 rom.
Problem : Please check the attached pics.
In sms, when i type "paev"..i get the suggested correct name "parv" with 'mobile' and 'home'. But when i type the correct "parv", i get the same numbers with 'mobile' and 'history'. I want "home" instead of "history"
Other issue is, I have saved many numbers as 'mobile' and 'other'...but in sms contact list, many of those 'other' numbers comes under "VOICE" tag.
These are not the major issues, but please help me with solving them.
Ok, I tried to partly figure out this problem..... the "home-->"history" problem occurs only when I have a sms in my inbox of that contact. I delete the message, problem gets solved. But i cant keep on erasing my messages...
so..any one help please ?
Set the home number as default. It may solve while you use it more. You can use simple third party SMS apps like SMS composer, handcent SMS, Go SMS...
