[Q] App to turn 3g on when Internet Browser is started? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I have Galaxy S I9000 Froyo update (German version) and would like to know if there is an app on the market (free or paid version) which would keep 2G Net connection and would switch to 3G Net (UMTS) only when one other app looks actively for data in Internet.
The reason for this is that I do not need to check e-mails regularly or as a push version (I'd rather do this manually) and do not need syncing with my google account on regular basis (once a day I can do manually something like this).
I would hope that an app like this would save me a lot of battery time.
If there is a way to do this on Galaxy I9000, please let me know.
At the moment I use APN on/off switch to achieve this, but an automated version (which would react to starting an Internet app such as Opera, Market, E-Mail app etc.) would be VERY nice
Thanx in advance for any and all info/suggestions,
Pavana
P.S. Yes, I did use search function but after wasting some 6 hours of reading all postings non of which came close to my wishes I gave up.

you can use tasker to do that

(to turn 3g or WLan on when a specific app is started: Internet browser or Market and turn it off when the app is killed).
I am sorry, but you have to deal with a complete idiot here: I bought the tasker
but after several days of trying to do it - I was not able to do this.
Could some "good, sweet soul" help me waste no more of my "quality time with my family" with simple introduction on how to do it?
My tasker is still a virgin - no tasks, I have I9000 International edition.
Thanks in advance.

yep. and the app use is an extra fee on top of the monthly charge...
you culd always have them send you the app...

sweet.. thanks for the heads up on this.. for some reason I didn't think there was an app.. make good use of my subscription.
Works 50% of the time, but when it does it's fantastic. Other 50% of the time it says Service is Down.
I love Sirius service, but what a ****ty app. First, the sound quality goes in and out, next it has an Inactivity timeout of something like 2 hours...so if your like me and you sit there listening at work you have to click the 'restart' button 3-4 times in a day. I know why they do it with Internet Users, but there needs to be a better (longer) timeout for the App. THE WORST part is that if you get a call while it's running, it won't stop...it plays throughout your call. A very poor 1.0 release. Be warned, I bought a Stiletto2 thinking it would be a great Sirius device (and it is for the most part), but they NEVER update the software or add features. I doubt we will ever see a 1.1 version of the Sirius App....I love the concept of Sirius, but they really don't give a **** about their customers.
couple improvements I'm hoping for is a widget with the app. Also dvr functions pause/rewind/ff. Also recording would be great... they are allowing timeshifting with the Skydock now also caching with the Slacker app.. so maybe..
All good ones. I hope they beef up the buffer a little otherwise loving it

If you want howard stern, use droid live or xiialive
Thanks for the link. Anyone else have a problem with no icon or anything being created for this app? To open it I had to go into Astro and launch it from there..couldn't find it in the app drawer or if you try to add an icon to the home screen there's no option for it.

01.) Shoot Me seems to be the most popular. *(Although you must be rooted)*
02.) There are one or two threads ( i think over in the Q&A Section ) but it seems like most of the suggestion are just to search the Market for "call recording" after also getting a few suggestion to the legality of recording calls.
03.) Sorry, not sure, the best i can do is suggest searching AppBrain or AndroLib & just trying out the highest rated / most downloaded.
04.) I have Wireless Tether because it came with my ROM, but i didn't see it on AppBrain.
05.) Documents To Go seems to edit *.doc's, although i've never used it.
06.) Sorry for the dumb question, but do you mean WiFi access to the Phone or Desktop? SwiFTP FTP Server to access your EVO over WiFi. Or PhoneMyPC seems to be another popular app to access your PC from your Phone, however it costs $9.99. I'm sure another user may have a better free suggestion if that's what you're looking for.

[Q] Creating an app to...

Due to switching roms constantly and data wiping (i always like to start fresh, even without switching roms sometimes) there is always a lot to add back, some things which are tedious
basically i want to know if it would be a hassle to make an app do this:
add all the settings to set up my email
set up passwords for wifi networks i use a lot (home networks)
and a big one, install a certificate and set up the wifi to use on campus
my background:
outside of Matlab and Mathematica i know nothing about programming (if you can even consider those real programming languages?)
ive been interested in learning to program, mainly to accomplish personal tasks like these
would this be too 'difficult' to go after and tackle, where to start?
would the google appcreater be able to do something like this?
thanks =D

Is there a text app that allows for different 'themes' that doesn't harvest your information and sell it ala GO SMS, Handscent or Chomp?
what makes you think those apps sell your information?

I've seen this mentioned about GoLauncherEx as well (maybe mentioned by same OP?). Would be nice to know if there's any truth to these allegations.

I was looking at the permissions for the apps & sent an email to the developer claiming I was interested in downloading the apps if some of the permissions could be explained to me. I mentioned the data-mining rumours (probably shouldn't have). Anyway, I never got a response back & I sent the email like 2 weeks ago.
I don't think the information sent is actually identifiable info, just search patterns & browser history stuff that's helpful in marketing. That doesn't make it right, though. If you're rooted, download DroidWall via the Market then download the app you want to use. Turn off your internet connection if it makes you feel better, then open DroidWall & deny 3g and WiFi internet access to the app. Be sure to tap menu & apply rules. Then you can turn 3g or wifi back on & run the app without worrying about info being sent. The sms app will not be able to download mms, so you'll need to use the stock app for that.

According to the info in the GO SMS thread this is exactly how they make their money (all three major programs), so I won't use them. I pay for all the apps I use, if there's a free version I don't use it, I pay for the full, because I believe in supporting developers, but not to the point where they're using and selling my information. I really don't care what the info is, it's mine, and I'll decide if anyone is going to make money off of it.

Can XOOM 3G make Voice call like a mobile phone

Can any one advise this as its not listen in the 3G Specs..
By default no, but there has been talks about possibly getting it to work and a lot of people have success getting Line2 (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.toktumi.line2&feature=search_result) to work on it but requires you to even find the APK somewhere or download it on another android phone and copy the APK file off it.
I am looking for a core 2 Andriod 3.0 with at least a 7.1 or 10.1 screen...
Have to be able to make call.
Any recommendations..
I don't think you're going to find that anywhere.
Good luck with that, last I checked there were no tablets out there (at least in terms of Android 3.0+) that will allow you to make phone calls with them unless you use Skype (or mod it to allow making phone calls nativity.
I have heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab does allow you to make phone calls but I haven't tested myself and don't know if the newer Tab 10.1 (not sure if it's out yet or not) will support the phone features either since the Tab 10.1 will have 3.0.
I'm sure other members on this forums will step in to correct me if I'm wrong at anything I've said here but this is what I've saw so far.
I had some limited success with nettalk and my Google Talk phone number. Could connect with my home phone but my husband said it was very echo-y. I'm wifi only so it can be done. I'm going to try Line 2.
GrooVe IP works
i downloaded groove IP from the market tonite and it seems to work fine, it uses your Google voice number. No monthly fee like Line 2

receiving calls
you have to be logged out of Google talk on your xoom. Also, make sure that in your gv settings you have it set to google chat rather than your mobile number. Not sure if that made any sense, but they explain it step by step in the help section.
is that video calling or just voice?

How can I get the google chat to show up rather then the mobile number because I do not have that option. The only options I see are my mobile number and add this phone, nothing else. I can make calls with excellent quality on both ends but cannot get any calls on my Xoom because of this. What am I doing wrong?

I forgot about that. Well I am there on the web browser version of voice and I am a bit confused as to what I need to do exactly. Am I setting up a new number? I still don't see anything about google chat. I'm not a noob to technology by any means but never tried to set up calling on my Xoom until now because I never had the need for it. Not really sure. When I go to google voice on my browser and then click on the setting tab in upper right corner and then choose voice settings, I can then click on the phones tab, that is where I am able to choose google chat.
Hope that helps, that's about all I got.
I will add that my calls work a lot better for the other party when I use bluetooth.

Dang... I just remembered a long time ago I deleted the google chat from my registered phones list because I didn't think I would ever need to use it. So that would mean I would have to add it back, but... yeah. If I try to add another phone it gives me the name to choose and I need to set a number for it, and I have no idea what the number would be for google chat. Thanks for the quick responses though! I'll try and figure out what to do next. And I have 2 nice bluetooth headsets and they do work great!

The legacy Galaxy Tab does let you use a GSM sim card and allow one to make phone calls as well as access EDGE/3G data...i helped a friend set up his tab a couple of weeks ago and can confirm this....im located in Mumbai, India...and the versions available here do allow the ability to also use it as a phone..

i believe its the kernel that is stopping it from possible.
at the momenet, honeycomb is designed to be a tablet OS, hence it didn't include the Phone's feature in the system.
for galaxy tab, (the older one), it running on Gingerbread which a Phone OS, hence it can be easily enable the phone feature.
i believe we need to wait till Ice Cream where it unite Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so that it has the phone's feature in the system and can be enabled easily.
Hey All
Just thought I'd add to this old topic. I have an Australian 3G Xoom, on the American 3.1 update, with my settings pushed back for 3G etc.
Tonight I installed the UAString/SMS mod, so that I could send SMSes (which work perfectly with Handcent, over the Telstra 3G network - just like any mobile phone would do). Then I tried calling my tablet. This also worked perfectly! The call came up, it connected, etc. I answered and this is where we hit trouble. No sound. Either way. So the Xoom doesn't have a microphone/speaker set up for sound during a call. I even tried setting the Xoom on speaker phone, but still nothing.
Any ideas? Not sure if this has been posted about before, and I thought it was pretty exciting, to be making normal calls, and SMSes (there is all this talk about Google Voice, which is useless outside of the US) on the Xoom, and this was very exciting for me.
