TERRIBLE internet speeds after flashing Cog 4.1 - Captivate General

I've only used:
- Eclair 2.1-update1
- DG's leak of 2.2 Froyo
- DG Cognition 4.1
On my 2.2 leak I'd routinely pull 2.5Mbps-3.5Mbps but since flashing to Cog 4.1 I can barely pull 1Mbps, IF THAT.
I've tried a couple of other 850 modems I found in SGS tools but one made it worse and one was about the same.
What can I do to restore the Internet speeds that I'm used to? This is terrible.
Please help! What modem should I try? I'm in the USA/ATT and have a Cappy 1010
Note: My WiFi speeds are fine. I get 10Mbps+ and I only have a 12Mbps plan so I'm OKAY on WiFi but 3G/H sucksssssss

If you are trying to use one of the i9000 modems (JK3, JK4, JL3, etc), you need to use an i9000 kernel as well.
Check out the modem thread:

I've looked at the modem thread but it's hard to make heads or tails.
I know I have to match the modem with the ROM, with Cog being Cappy KB1 based I knew I needed to stick to Captivate only modems.
I'm on UCJJ4 and it still sucks. I just want to be able to pull at least 2Mbps and I'll be happy.

You can give an i9000 kernel/modem a try. You don't have to stay with the captivate stuff.
For what its worth, JK4 gives me decent results in my area. You should just keep trying different modems since location makes a difference.

What modem was the 2.2 Leak based off of?

I also experienced the slow speeds after flashing cognition 4.1. I am now using the latest speedmod kernel and the JK4 modem and I get blazing data speeds. 5mbps down and 2-3mbps up. My gps works pretty damn well too

I'd was using the speedmod kernel and JK4 as well on Cog 3.02. If I stay with Cognition 4.1, I'll definitely be going back to them, becuase this rom LAGS big time, all across the board. And just because that's not annoying enough, the pinch-zoom doesn't work in the blasted browser, either. I've loved the Cognition roms, but I'm seriously disappointed in this one.
Maybe AT&T should hire DG. God knows, he built a hell of lot better Rom from the leaked versions of Froyo than all of AT&T and Samsung's people did with official access, and unfortunately, their bad work shines through in Cognition 4.1.1.

I ended up cracking open the zip file for 4.1.1, replacing the browser.apk file with the one in Cog 3.02 - which is quite a bit smaller, by the way - then re-zipping and flashing it to my phone*. I also went ahead and loaded jk4 and Speedmod's latest. Now pinch-zoom works again, the surfing/etc., speed is much less laggy, I was able to also add the Captivate's stock sounds, and (despite the cussing) a good time was had by all.
The battery life seems remarkably good, too, despite some pretty heavy use. And that's even though I haven't yet had the chance to calibrate it or clear stats and caches. I wonder what it'll be like after a few drain-outs and charge-ups?
Guess I'll keep the rom around for a bit and see.

[Q] Now that Perception is gone, what are similar ROMs?

I hate TouchWiz. I hate it with a passion. All I want in a ROM is stock Android, stability, and nice upgrades, like the camera that works below 15%.
Any ideas?
Perception and Cognition are both very similar, just Cog is based on Rogers Captivate.
Cog 4 is about to be released by DG.

Except that you sacrifice HSUPA and Bluetooth voice dialing. Not the case with Perception.
I'm in the same boat, trying to decide what to use next to stay current.
Cog is based on 2.2, and not 2.2.1, so it lacks certain things, such as HSUPA+ and voice dialing. Also, Perception is the only ROM I know of with the lock screen chooser and integrated music player/ glass lock. Every other ROM uses the AOSP lock screen, which I hate.
Oh yeah, I forgot Cog 3 didn't have HSUPA. Talk about a difference when I flashed Supernova.

To be honest I'm not even sure I (or we) need to stay current. I'm still using Perception 10.2, because 10.3 and 10.4 didn't do anything but update apps and kernel, which I've already done myself. The ROM as-is is stable, with no major bugs, and everything works as far as I am aware.
Serendipity.

well it all depends on what you want. if you want a solid build with great performance then any of adam's roms (supernova, phoenix, firefly (started by adam)) would be a great choice. cognition would also be a good choice. just look around in the dev section and find one you like.
If you are looking for a stock themed fast rom on 2.2.1 try dags newest. Has stock theme option ousting chinese i19088 which is a basic identical twin to the captivate

You should go give my ROM a try. No touchwiz, HSUPA, small, quick, and stable. Search "xMerk" in development.

I had HSUPA with Cognition. However I didn't have BT calling. Other ROMs such as FireFly are built on Rogers Froyo as well and it seems to have both HSUPA and BT calling.
Remember, both HSUPA and BT calling depends on the modem and kernel.

rooted and unlocked my 2.1 android, now what?

What ROM should I get to increase the phones overall performance and responsiveness? I just want something that is very stable and something that will improve my phone in a good way.
Every single rom is gonna be a million times better than stock eclair...for your first time I would stick with a froyo rom as those are easier to flash. Just pick one
oh man.. where to start. Honestly it varies so much from user to user. Your best bet is to hop on some of the threads and read some of the comments.. first few pages and the last few.. try to get an idea of how well the ROM is working for users and battery life. There are a plethora of 2.2.1 ROMs with excellent battery life. The gingerbread ROMs are coming around to having decent to good battery life. But again, it all varies from user to user.
Good 2.2 or 2.2.1 ROMs
Serendipity, Paragon, Phoenix, Ultimate and theres more of coarse, these were among my top choices.
A lot of the gingerbread ROMs can be found in the first page of development.
But please use the search function. There has been multiple threads started with the same question.. about the same topic.
Once you go serendepity, you can't go back. but seriously I tried a lot of roms and serendipity is BY FAR the best!

I tried serendipity and its a great rom but I like a side scrolling app drawer as opposed to the cube effect. I use apex 5.3 (froyo 2.2.1) not to be confused with apex 6.x( gingerbread) because its simply works. The five dock bottom is great and battery life is amazing. And the jk4 modem actually gets me much better reception than the stock kb1. but if you like the stock feel cognition is the way to go

I flashed Serendipity 6.4. So far the first thing that I noticed is that the apps are organized scrolling down, not side to side which is the one thing that I do not liked very much. everything else seems to be very good.
Toad858, which version and where did you the 5.3?
also what kernel do I need?

If you'd like to use your original TouchWiz side-scrolling app drawer, give Cognition a try instead. Cognition is best-known as the 2.2 ROM that tries to stay as close as possible to the original, with a ton of under-the-hood features and fixes (like lagfix), minus the bloatware.
(I can't stand TouchWiz, but still love Cog's stability, so I use Launcher Pro (with its vertical app drawer) instead)
cognition rom is my favorite rom when it comes to stability. and its smooth as ever now.
I think I will stick to serendipity. Now I am trying to figure out what modems do and if I need one to be able to use a kernel? I was looking at Onix Kernel and it says "Since based on i9000 sources, use an i9000 modem". I am not sure what a modem is first of all.

technically, as long as everything works for you as of right now - you're done. You can sit back and enjoy the rom. If you feel ambitious, you can try a different kernel. I dont know what serendipity uses but I found the Onix kernel to be one of the smoothest froyo kernel, available. Thats, of course, my opinion though.

That's what's packaged in the rom. You don't NEED that modem specifically or need to change ... Unless you're cell signal sucks then check out the modem sticky at the top of the dev section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 You do need an I9000 modem because the kernel in serendipity is based off I9000 sources.
What you NEED to do is stop right now. Enjoy your phone and READ everything you can. Once you feel comfortable with flashing and knowing how to get yourself out of bad situations, flash away. No one can tell you which rom is best for you. You're more than welcome to narrow your choice to a few, then try them out or try them all. The key is knowing how to do it and the things that can happen.
You may also benefit from THIS new thread
Apex 5.3, as most other roms do, comes with a great kernel and modem so you dont have to worry about it. I cant link the thread right now but you can search for it under development

Difference between EE4 and EP1F?

What are the differences between the EE4 and EP1F updates? I'm mostly asking about the radio, but all others will be read too. Just felt like i should know before i make the decision whether go back to Froyo or stay on the GB leak.

I'd also like to know, I love Froyo since it's stable and official and don't play on moving to GB until it's officially rolled out but I'm still quite interested in why everyone is in love with EP1F.

4G issues in EP1F?
My impression is that the LTE radio in the various gingerbread leak based roms has significant speed issues. I had EP1F installed for a few days and I went back to a Froyo rom because my 4G speeds had dropped to 3G-like.
YMMV, if I am wrong about this I would like to hear about it.
I suspect that if 4G is not available where you are, then EP1F would be worth checking out. Netflix will work, if you care about that...

Do these modems suck or is it just me?

I get a lot of random data dropouts, even when I switch to cdma only on the wireless network settings. Way fewer on cdma, but they still happen often enough that I notice them. I can go from looking at a web page one second to no connection the next.
On the road listening to pandora the other day, even with perfect reception on the local i595 corridor, I suddenly went from full bars and 4g to "searching for signal". It's happened a few times. Sometimes it fixes itself, sometimes I need to reboot or switch airplane mode on and off.
I know I'm not the only one having at least some problems. Can I get an amen, brothers and sisters? Seriously, I am becoming very frustrated very quickly with my very expensive toy. Maybe Samsung will take notice if enough people complain...
Should have learned my lesson with the epic on sprint, But these amoled screens are like cell phone heroin.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I've noticed the connections are quite ****ty. I thought it was just me because I live in a 1 bar area for both 3g and 4g. It's odd how my connection is always on 4g when I wake the phone up but the minute I start browsing the web it decides to drop me to 4g, it's so unreliable I'm forced to use my slower home connection(30mb/s but since it's wireless it's below 10mb/s, so slower than 4g)
What modems are ya'll using? I had those issues with EE4 but since flashing the EP1Q modems onto my EE4 rom, everything has went smoothly.

Stock EE4. I should try flashing a GB leak, or at least a leaked modem fw. I don't know why I haven't yet.
EP1Q radios still suck. I get slower 3G and still get the drop to 1x problem.
Does Samsung create these or does Qualcomm? What about for the Nexus phones?

Best ROM for wifi issues?

Just wondering if there is a ROM that handles wifi better than the stock one. It amazes me just how bad it really is....Need to do something about it!
I guess I wasn't on the stock ROM long enough to notice any issues with wifi, but I guess Serendipity VII might manage your wifi signal better. I really haven't had any issues with my Infuse's wifi connection while using this ROM.

Other than possibly Gingerbread vs. Froyo - none. All Froyo kernels use the same BCM4330 driver, all Gingerbread kernels use another driver but it's the same for all GB kernels.
(Wifi support is primarily in the kernel.)
Thanks. Switched to infused 1.6 last night and it seems to be a little better so far.
