2 questions about re-locking the bootloader ("fastboot oem lock") - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have unlocked my Nexus S bootloader. I want to "re-lock" it with the "fastboot oem lock" command :
- will it wipe all data on the phone, like the unlock command, or is it just a flag ?
- will the Samsung warranty be recovered after this ? Could Samsung tech' detect the unlock-lock history on the phone ?
Thanks

The lock does not wipe.
The warranty is not automatically void like the nexus one. When you unlock it now says may void your warranty not does void. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you are sending it in for a melted led

Nice ! Thanks for the information.

[Q] rooting/flashing without void warranty

Hi All,
I`ve just purchased a NS and I want it to be rooted. It was quite easy on my previous phone (SG3), but now I`m unable to find any guides to do this without unlocking the bootloader.
Actually flashing a custom ROM, such as CM7 would be the next step but I can live with this original one(2.3.4), but rooting is vital, I`m unable to live without eg. titanium backup, but also need the 2 years warranty...
Do you have any idea for solving this?
Thanks in advance.

You can try the Gingerbreak exploit. Other than that I know of no way without unlocking the bootloader.
I`v tried Gingerbreak yesterday but unfortunately it`s not working.
Any other idea?
No. I thought the Gingerbreak exploit might have been fixed in 2.3.4 but I wasn't sure. I don't know of any other way without unlocking the bootloader.
Why don't you unlock the bootloader? It is not like the nexus one. The bootloader can be locked again at ur wish with the command : fastboot OEM lock
You can unlock the bootloader, flash your recovery, flash your rom and lock it up again if that is your wish.

This would be fine if this is not causing warranty issues.
To be honest I've read somewhere in this forum that unlocking the bootloader is irreversible and voids the warranty.
So please repose me.

None that I'd know of, maybe someone got a private hardware approach/mod, but that I highly doubt.
Gingerbreak before 2.2 (I think) or unlocking bootloader via fastboot oem unlock.
This really shouldn't be a huge concern.
Look at the language on the unlock screen. Unlike the Nexus One which stated unlocking voids the warranty the Nexus S language has been tweaked to indicate unlocking *may* void your warranty.
Even with unlocked bootloaders HTC honored the warranty on the Nexus One for hardware issues. Don't expect to unlock, root, leave the LED on high for 20 minutes and then try to send it in for repair when it burns out though.

RMA after using only fastboot oem lock, leaving the tamper flag behind

Hi guys, I am wondering if any of you have RMA'ed a Nexus 5 that was reflashed to stock and fastboot oem lock and left the tampered flag intact?
I recently RMA'ed my N5 and reflashed back to stock with Google factory images and used fastboot oem lock to relock the bootloader but I wasn't aware that Google is flagging the unlock's now so I am concerned I am going to be charged for the replacement because the warranty is void.
Any of you returned using only oem lock after unlocking and rooting?
Thanks

Yeah this has been my fear, thanks for replying.
I haven't opened the replacement so I'll wait to see what comes of it. Worse case scenario I'll return the replacement and ask for my return back.
I would think that for Google to refuse a warranty return bases upon an unlocked bootloader they would have to: A. Make it clear that unocking the bootloader voids the warranty 2. Be able to demonstrate a clear connection between the unlocked bootloader and the reason for the return. ie a phone being returned due to loose buttons should not be refused because the bootloader was unlocked. There is no possible cause and effect.
I can't rememeber when I unlocked the bootloader if there was a warning that it would void the warranty. If so does it say MAY void, or WILL void? Anyone?

Hmm - didn't realize this was happening. Do you happen to have a link to a thread/post where people got charged for that or got warranty denied?

It says "may void" not will. But LG warranty states "will void" so, its a little unclear. That's why I was looking for advice or reply from someone who's done a return.
I've heard of people returning N5....
I've heard of people returning N5 that was still rooted and unlocked and even got their replacement without any charge. I'm not sure there is a hard and fast rule but I'd like to know if there was?

How to safely unlock the bootloader P9?

How to safely unlock the bootloader P9 ? Please for detailed instructions. Thanks.
I think people used DC unlocker..
So has anyone tried to relock the bootloader? It would be nice to know if there is a method to relock that can't be detected, so our warranty says intact. I've read that dc unlocker can do that but I've never seen confirmation.

I've just checked too on dc unlocker site and P9 results like the last added supported model with this features:
- direct unlock
- read bootloader code
- read unlock codes
- unlock FRP
So I just unlocked my Bootloader successfully with the DC unlocker tool and wanted to share the process with you guys. If you live in Europe and tried to get your unlock code directly from Huawei you may have run into some problems but this method works. My P9 is a EVA-L09 (europe single sim version).
Do this at your own risk.
You need this tool: https://www.dc-unlocker.com/ I did it with the most recent version as of now (V1.00.1290) which is the first that supports the P9.
Basically follow the instructions in the tool to get your device connected, it's straightforward. Then you need to make an account and _buy_ credits to read your unlock code. You need 4 credits so it will cost you 4 euro. This sucks, but it's no scam or anything. It works (as I just did it).
Just log in through the tool with the data provided after making an account and go to Unlocking -->"read bootloader code". Push the button and after a few secs your code appears. WRITE IT DOWN AND/OR COPY IT TO A .txt or something
[e] important: before you unlock/relock your phone or flash a custom recovery make sure that you go to developer settings and tick "enable OEM unlock". Missing this could lead to brick in certain situations, for more info read this article and do additional research.
Once you have the code you can start the unlocking process. This is the same for people that got their unlock code through other methods.
-Disconnect and power off your P9.
-Push volume down and connect it to your Computer, when the screen turns on you are in fastboot mode.
-Open any ADB/Fastboot tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 <- i used this) and write:
"fastboot devices"
your device should be detected. Then write:
"fastboot oem unlock XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" )X being the unlock code you got from DC unlocker)
It gives you a warning about warranty etc you have to comply and your bootloader is unlocked. As it warns you on the screen this will do a factory reset.
If you ever want to relock the bootloader put your phone in fastboot mode and type
"fastboot oem relock XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" the bootloader will be relocked but as far as we know it's detectable that it was unlocked before.
Hope this helps, cheers

The phone could become less secure, however after unlocking you should be able to install a modified recovery (twrp)
Do you still get automatic updates through the phone with an unlocked boot loader? I'm keen to put an English rom on my Chinese P9

Do you get that in the DC unlocker or when you actually type the unlock command in fastboot? DC unlocker is just for reading the bootloader code not the actual unlocking. If that makes sense.
Also don't forget to "enable OEM unlock" in the dev settings.

I got the codes from DC unlocker, it's the response from fastboot oem unlock <code>. DC unlocker gave me four codes, I tried all of them. OEM Unlock is enabled in settings.
I have read elsewhere that the O2 handsets are bootloader locked, but mine came from the carphone warehouse, who usually send out carrier-free handsets (thus not O2 specific). Unfortunately I don't have a microsim from another network to test this, though there doesn't seem to be any O2 branding or apps.
EDIT: I've discovered the problem, I clicked "Read unlock codes" rather than "Read bootloader code" so the codes were obviously incorrect.
So even if we use dc unlocker to unlock our bootloader they can detect it???

DC unlocker doesn't actually unlock the bootloader, it's just an alternate way to get your specific unlock code. The actual unlocking is done with a command line.

I know it doesn't unlock it and only provides an unlock code but on other huawei phones it can relock the bootloader and leave the status locked instead of relocked.

I've searched for that myself and found a post where someone said DC unlocker can relock the bootloader leaving the status "locked" instead of "relocked". But no confirmation if that is detectable or not and it was from a different device, so no guarantees it will work for the P9... So I guess we don't have a definitive answer how this affects your warranty and it may very well depend on the country you live in, as it usually does with warranty issues.
The official Huawei page states the following (link):
"Huawei will record your unlock request information; for software and hardware failures arising as a result of unlocking the bootloader, Huawei repair centers can provide repair services charged at the standard rate for repair work outside the scope of the warranty."
The way I interpret this it means that you only lose warranty if the damage is directly related to something you did by having the bootloader unlocked. If you have an unlocked bootloader and the camera module dies within the warranty period you should be fine unless they can prove that it died because of something you flashed through the unlocked bootloader. But as I said I think this is handled case by case and depends on your local warranty law.
I have an o2 P( bought in o2 store, used DC unlocker after some faffing with installing hisuite before DC unlocker would recognise my phone.
Got the unlock code unlocked bootloader, and restored 'most' of my data via the hisuite backup feature
I'm not doing anything else with it until I have all relevant files to recover from a sketchy flash or whatnot

I think this might be redundant, yesterday I contacted Huawei through their customer support form on their international page with my IMEI and S/No, and about 10hrs later got my bootloader unlock code with all the usual warnings about the warranty. I'm currently at work so I can't yet confirm if the code works or not but will update this post in a few hrs when I get home.
I was genuinely surprised that the person who contacted me via email was actually a finnish customer service agent, not some google translate-bot or anything.
My device is EVA-L09 and I live in Finland.

Relock Bootloader Command

Does anyone know the command to relock bootloader? I flashed the raw firmware but every command I tried to relock failed. I need to make a warranty claim but can't until the bootloader is relocked.
Commands I have tried but failed:
fastboot oem lock
fastboot oem asus-csc_lk ( taken from ROG Phone 2 forums)
Code:
fastboot oem asus-back
fastboot reboot (if it doesn't reboot on it's own)
Thank you! Worked perfectly. You rock!

Nice to hear it
Just remember you won't get FOTAs anymore because Asus is blacklisting unlocked phone's IMEI.
I wonder if there's a way to fake-send the IMEI to Asus when doing the unlocking process.
I don't know how exactly the bootloader is being unlocked but something tells me the unlock code is generated with the use of IMEI/SN. Wrong phone IDs = wrong key, however this is only my speculation.

He has bricked it while locking the bootloader, so yeah, it will be locked. Warranty will depend on where you live. If you'll have faulty motherboard, they'll probably replace it for free but technically this is mandatory action only in the EU because just unlocking can't be considered as warranty void. Of course until they prove you that you bricked it.

Yes unlocking the bootloader does void warranty.
Motorola rarely enforces it, and will fix or replace if there was a manufacturer problem.
