Icons disappear from Home Screen after moving apps to External SD - Captivate General

I moved all apps that would allow it over to the external SD. Since then, when I reboot, the icons for the apps that I moved are no longer present on my Home Screen. I have moved them back to the Home Screen, but upon each reboot they disappear again.
Any thoughts?

They aren't appearing because they are on the SDcard. The homescreen loads before you boot and the sdcard is mounted. It won't load the apps until the media scanner picks them up. At least that's how I take it. I moved everything back to the phone that kept disappearing and it seemed to fix that issue for me.

its normal, just wait till it loads some time..

Yup.
You can always wait for media scan to finish and then stop your launcher in task manager.

At some point it should resolve? I moved all that stuff back to the Phone Memory. Seems like the easiest solution.

Has anyone tried this script for the MT4G?

Feed back? Can't get it to work for Glacier. 128 comes back after reboot.
SD Speedboost
Anybody try if this app does the same thing?

That app works fine. Just pick the cache size and check the set on boot and let it run.

I just tried this on my MT4G (cm7-rc4).
1. Kept reverting back to 128 after boot
2. Weird behavior on the app drawer (LauncherPro). After rebooting, touch app drawer; app drawer does NOT display, but the home icon appears over the app drawer button (can see both) and the phone is temporarily locked up, until I rotate the phone (between portrait/landscape), and it clears up, but keeps repeating that behavior.
I removed the app. May try the "SD Card Speed Booster" app...or do it manually via init.d.
Cheers!

That bug has nothing to do with sdcard patch. LPP is buggy as hell. I get that bug quite frequently myself.

Isn't it stated in the article that it reverts back to 128 after stock? When I changed it a little notification always came up dating the file was backed up, so I'm assuming it backs itself up and restores itself automatically.
Using the sd card speed reading app the article suggested I noticed a tiny improvement, but nothing worth changing. I have a class 6, 16gb card, fyi.
Edit: this is the article I'm referring to

Ive tried this trick and really didnt notice a difference
first tested with stock 128KB
second I tested the 2048KB
then I tried the 4096KB with pretty much the same results 10MB write and 82MB read, forgot to take a pic tho
these tests were done using an ADATA 16GB class 6 sd card
i've got t to work manually, but the results are inconsistent.
I've been using the app and it works great. My Gallery 3D loads much faster. I have a 8 GB class 6 Transcend MicroSD card that shouldn't take long to load images, yet i have to wait for the image to pixilate before review in the camera app (after snapping an image with CM7). With this app, it loads immediately.

Bug - Missing Apps

I reported an earlier issue where my phone will reboot (without SAMSUNG and AT&T splash screens) when the stock browser will lock up. When it comes back up, often the majority of my apps are missing...I either have to reboot again or plug it into the PC with USB mode so it can scann my memory and then they come back...not a fun bug to be sure...anyone else have this issue?
Thanks...
Brian
Nope, when I pull my external sd my icons go android to indicate that its missing, but they don't disappear.

[Q] SD-Card Apps Bug?

Hi there!
I think I discovered a bug, which as I can see occurs also to other none Sensation phones.
When I put a shortcut on the mainscreen, from an app which I installed on the SD-Card, after a reboot or shutdown the app Logo is replaced by the standard Android Logo and I can't start the app via the shortcut anymore. I have to delete it and then place the app again from the app-drawer on the mainscreen to get it work again.
Does someone else experience the same problem?
Cheers
Yeah that's happened to me too.

How many minutes does it take exactly? Because I didn't wait longer than maybe 2 or 3 minutes.
I think I'll send an e-mail to HTC to let them know about this problem.

it's a common problem. nothing to worry about.
When android phones first bootup and icon is status bar says sd is preparing, during this time the icon for apps on sd is incorrect, but should be fixed once sd is prepared by OS.
SD card bug
I'm having the same issue, picked up the Sensation yesterday. It doesn't matter how long you wait, the apps never recover. You have to remove the icons from the home screen. Plus apps that use a database stored on the SD will not work continuously, such as Touchdown from Nitrodesk. Other than this highly annoying bug, its a nice phone.
is this a common issue? i know that the OS has to mount the SD card and wait for a bit, but i waited all day and the icons are still screwed up. i had the G2 and had apps on the sd card and they load up fine after a few minutes.
would this be caused by the type/class of sd card? i have a 16gb class 10. the apps load up fine just the icons all look the same

Same here. On my wildfire it changes back to normal. But my sensation doesnt change back.
Have you reported this to TMO and HTC? Any response?
Yep, happens all the time. The recent update didn't resolve it.
There's a workaround however - you don't need to re-create the shortcut or anything, just go to Settings->Applications->Manage->All, scroll to HTC Sense (there would be two, we need the first one with a clock as a logo) and force close it. Press Home, HTC Logo appears, bam! Your icons are back. Highly annoying.

well its not the fone issue nor sd card...its app compatibility issue... most apps were designed for froyo...but now running them on 2.3.3 they waork on sd-card as well but their shortcuts do not identify them after restart coz they do not have exact icon update path...its an appp issue ...till its resolved plz keep apps on fone....do not worry u need to work hard to finish 1 gig by apps....and plz dt ever think apps on fone mk it slower...use advance task killer as well....
im just going to put the apps on the phone instead of sd card...until htc does an update, because when i used the gingerbread custom rom on the g2 it had no problem putting apps on sd card.
yeah happens to me too. Just kill sense to force it to reload and that fixes it ... until the the next reboot

[Q] HTC Launcher Restarts

Recently I've been noticing that the stock launcher always seems to restart when coming out of another app. For instance, I might go into Gmail for a few seconds, and when I press the home button, I get the white HTC screen then a loading screen for the launcher. So I have to wait like 15 seconds before actually seeing my home screen when I was just there seconds before!
Is anyone else having this issue?
I tried switching to Launcher Pro, but I got similar issues there, where all the icons would have to reload individually on the screen when pressing the home button. And it was a big laggy (more so than the stock launcher).
I had that same problem but that was because I accidently moved the sense launcher to my sd, after moving it back it stopped also look to see if any of the sense programs like people, browser etc we moved cause they can also cause Sense to restart if not stored on phone.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
Nope, they're all on my phone. Just double checked.
Having same problem but it's intermittent. I also asked a couple of other people and they are having the same problem.
It's really annoying. I don't always have quick access to apps because of this. And running another launcher doesn't help. Hopefully this is fixed in the OTA update, whenever that'll be.

I have found that turning off the Fast Boot feature and restarting has pretty much eliminated this problem.
Thanks rorycs! That seems to have done the trick.
Any ideas why fast boot was causing the issue in the first place?

I have no idea... I can only guess that Fast Boot caches some data and that when the data is changed by a new app install/delete or some other saved data it has to rebuild the cached data each time before reloading .... Just a guess....

I've tried and, yes, it helps a little but it still happens!
So, I wonder when HTC's going to fix it? (I don't feel like doing a hard reset!)
I tried reformatting my memory card and also I no longer use the htc task manager to "kill all" seems to be working for me so far.

Hi since this evening I have the same problem. The first few weeks I did not have any problem with my sensation. This afternoon I applied a display protector and now he is starting up again and again.
Coincidence probably.
Where can I find the fast reboot mode> I can't find it on my (dutch, vodafone branded) phone.
Thanks
Usually the sense UI closes itself when the phone runs out of RAM, that's why it happens when you exit an app. Seems like also the fast boot option uses a bit more RAM so it makes the sense restart more often. Hope I helped.
Yeah mine has started restarting recently also.
I stopped fastboot but still does it. This is extremely annoying as it usually happens when I want to make a call or send a message and have to wait while it restarts.

I took off my screen protector hoping that that was the cause of all problems but it wasn't. Too bad, also formatted my sd card again. Hoping that that suggestion I found here on XDA works... so far so good...
Edit; so far still good it only rebooted once while it was in my pocket... working trick?

Pffft; I thought it was solved but today all misery started again, reboot after reboot, when i use my video cam it stops working and I have to wait till its working again. That costs me today a lot of footage from my kids at the carnival.
I hate it when things don't work.
So far i tried:
Taking of screen protector
disable fast boot
wipe and format my SD card.
Someone any suggestions? Will a factory reset work?
Thanks

Too bad! Brought my sensation to the shop and they did an system update with new software, phone was working for one day and now the **** started all over again, it just stops working randomly.
When i take a picture it stops, when its in my pocket it stops... I hate this!
I will bring it back to the shop again now for a hardware check, probably that will cost me two weeks.... I just have my phone one month......
I came to this thread lookling for a permanent fix to the loading screen but unfortunately i did not find that. I can offer a temporary fix, which certainly is not what we want but something is better than nothing.
Go to manage apps, all then to htc sense and delete data. That will correct the problem for a while. Unfortunately u will look te wallpaper and apps on the screen and u will have to put them back.
Guys, come on you have to search a little better for the answer.... but here you go anyway:
There are 2 options I have found that will work. I have been using the first option for months now with no issue or problem. Sense keeps restarting when it gets low on memory so the system swaps it out. You can choose your fix from the 2 options below. The first one apparently changes the way the system handles the Sense launcher and keeps it loaded much better - it is the option I use (I have found that when you exceed about 420MB used for your apps then the next option will work better). The second option simply stops the system from swapping the Sense launcher out of memory completely. Both of these require you to be rooted and to modify "build.prop" which is found in the /system folder.
If you are not comfortable with this edit make a Nandroid Backup first!!! (If you screw it up your phone may not boot)
1. Make a backup copy of "build.prop" (I simply copied it and renamed the original to "build.prop.old" and left it in the /system folder)
2. Edit "build.prop" with a text editor (you can use Astro or ES File Manager)
3. Scroll all the way to the END and add one of the following lines as the LAST LINE in "build.prop"
Choose ONE of the following lines and add it exactly as typed here:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
4. Save your edited "build.prop" and reboot.
That's it. Enjoy!
*NOTE: I am not responsible for any damage you may do to your phone by attempting this mod or for any errors that may occur as the result of editing system files.
PLEASE hit THANKS if I helped you!
Mine only happen when im using widget sense friend stream. Not sure why it happen only during scroll the widget friend stream others app did not trigger the restart htc launcher..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
try ARHD with No sense. Won't have such annoying problem happen again.
although the widget in Sense is nice, but with GO launcher and its widget in custom skin, feel satisfactory. at least it save ram and stop restarting which really annoy me.

[Q] Apps on SD not showing Icon

Hi everyone,
It seems when I move downloaded apps to my SD card and then restart the phone, their icons show as the default app icon if they are on one of my home panels.
Their icons do show up properly in the app drawer, but thats the only place. Also, this problem only happens after a restart. If i remove them and then put them back on the panels, the icons show up!
Anyone else have this problem? Anyone have a work around?
I have the same issue, I removed the shortcuts and replaced them, but they go back to the generic Android icon after a little while. I have my shortcuts in folders if that makes any difference.

I am not sure of a permanent fix but if you change the scene (long press on an empty bit of a home screen) choose the scene menu and choose a new scene, Then just go back to your original scene. Quicker than recreating your icons...
-Paul
Are you guys still on GB 2.3.3? I had the same problem before the update to 2.3.4
With 2.3.4, the icons always go back to normal after a few seconds.
Had this strange behaviour too. But after moving the apps to SD you have to remove the icons and put them afterwards back on the home screen. This always worked for me.

Running OTA GB 2.3.4. It happen every time I reboot. Normal icons persist on the homescreen but inside any folder the icon lose their mojo. They work perfectly but have the generic icons. I have had this sporadic issue through multiple ROMs including the OTA. That what I like about the "scene" fix. A few click and you are done without recreating the whole folder. (I have a folder full of games for my kids, about 20 items)
I have searched the threads on XDA and found nothing helpful for a permanent fix. (Perhaps my google-fu is weak?) It seems to happen on a lot of HTC devices. I personally have a DINC but I posted here because it was a nice fix that works on all HTC sense ROMs.
Apparently the official answer is to restart sense: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/361453-icon-bug-apps2sd-solution-post-47-here.html#post2907016
I have seen threads where this happens with other Launchers as well.
It's because when the phone reboots it has to wait for the SD card. Why are you moving apps anyway? You using more than 1GB of apps?!?!

In my case I currently have a DINC, my data/data is considerably smaller and I have not A2SD+ yet. I just found this thread through a search and added a suggestion that worked for me. 1 GB Data partition for phone storage! Man you guys have a nice piece of kit there.
