I restored my Captivate back to the stock 2.1 ROM using Odin, and I'm trying to update to the official 2.2 release. I tried using Kies Mini, but I get an "unregistered device" error that seems to have no solution (at least as far as my googling indicates).
How do I upgrade to 2.2?

You can use regular Odin(not the one click version) or Heimdall to flash the KB1 ROM in this thread...

Excellent, thank you! It wasn't clear to me that this was the same ROM as the official update.

it's confirmed by a couple people in that thread... there is also one in a Dev forum thread that has a different date but all the included files of the two posted roms have matching md5 sums... so download it and keep it handy in case you need to send it back it the mfgr.

My understanding is that if you have the stock ROM it will allow you to download the update. If you are rooted you can download it, but not install it because you will need the stock recovery in order to do so.
Personally, I think I can deal with being non-rooted for a little bit in order to try out the new stuff. I already nandroid'd back to the stock ROM, but still rooted ... going to put the stock recovery and such back on and see if anything shows up over the weekend
To a device with a custom recovery i believe

It should work with stock image and recovery.
I just put my stock image of 2.1 and stoc recovery and straight away got the OTA for 2.1 update1, so I believe 2.2 OTA will come too
Try this post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
^^ yep, did that. It started the update1 OTA immediately .... so far so good. Now it's down to the waiting game.
Is this only for nexus one?

I flashed FROYO.UCJI6 (i know this is an old ROM received back in october 2010 with some bugs!) using odin one flash method on my samsung captivate which was running JH7 firmware (which I upgraded from at&t out-of-the-box firmware JF6 through samsung kies program). Now, I am planning to downgrade my phone from FROYO.UCJI6 to 2.1 JF6 (i found the 2.1 JF6 firmware executable file online somewhere) through the same odin one flash method. My questions are:
1. After I downgrade from FROYO.UCJI6 to 2.1 JF6 using odin one flash method, can I upgrade it to 2.1 JH7 through samsung kies mini (the latest kies mini program on my windows 7 64 bit computer?
2. After I upgrade to 2.1 JH7, will I be able to upgrade to 2.2 FROYO if that ever becomes available for samsung captivate?
My current 2.2 is way better than that ECLAIR 2.1 JH7 but it is still not official and contains bugs that are annoying sometimes. Can anyone please guide me on this? I am new to the world of xda and I appreciate any help. I am also very new to the world of this whole ROM flashing thing and I consider myself an amateur at best. PLEASE HELP.
Regards,
Antony

The answer is YES. You can keep using Kies Mini to upgrade to the official 2.2 when it is released. I'd stay away from OTA upgrade. And Kies Mini will be faster way to do it anyway since you don't have to wait for your turn from OTA.
If you are willing to flash leaked froyo, why not try a custom rom. Most are already better then what the official froyo release will be, if it ever comes
I'm thinking of rolling back as well. Mainly because I could never get the market fixed with the leaked 2.2. There's a ton of apps I have to side load from my wifes Captivate and it's getting tiresome. Plus my battery life is atrocious with leaked 2.2.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Have one more dumb question. Can I upgrade straight from JF6 to 2.2 through kies? Or do I need to have JH7? I thought any version lower than 2.2 would do. If I am correct then I can keep working with the released froyo and switch to JF6 on the day samsung/at&t release an official froyo update. Please confirm my understanding. Thanks once again

correct ... you always have the option to Odin back to stock ... just download odin and keep it somewhere safe on your computer for a rainy day

Thank you. I will if I don't get to receive an official froyo in a month (an official release is possible given the recent update of kies mini) Now that I have taste for unofficial stuff, if I don't like the official froyo then I will try all the custom ROMs out there.

If you're going to mod the phone then don't bother with the kies update, go right to the odin EA10 and then flash pick and pack. If you just want root and stock 2.2 official - get the kies update and use super one click after (assuming that still works to root)
I just updated to the stock rom that was posted on uscc site a few hours ago and now I cant root the device??? I cant enable or disable usb debugging
I HAVE IT ROOTED NOW THANKS
I'm running Official 2.2, rooted using SuperOneclick, Installed CWM and Voodoo, EC10 PnP, ASOP Launcher, and two of the PnP add-ons. Running smoothly with a 1527 Quadrant.
Having issues with rooting using SWC & psneuter. Just hangs on "Waiting for device..."
I have Debugging going and restarted my phone just to double check. Any ideas?
swap usb ports while it says that

I'm not aware of a non-rooted stock KD1. I think people are trying to get one built for those that want stock Froyo.
Given that you're sending it in for a repair, I'd suggest installing the stock 2.3.6 (KJ6) as it's a Samsung official release. Once you get it back you can go back to KD1 with root.
Thank you.

I didn't realize you could unroot with it. Good info; thanks
I don't think you can unroot ROMs that were made.pre-rooted by just using SOC. I tried it before on a ROM (can't remember which) and it failed.
EDIT: If you didn't flash that file for root and instead rooted it with SOC previously, you can still unroot it.
If someone could be so kind to upload a Odin Stock KD1 without root, it would help solve some of these Froyo questions

Samfirmware.com doesn't have the files on their site anymore. They are SamMobile.com now.

Make sure you have the latest superuser.zip and you have to flash it a few times.
I am in Kies and my current firmware is PDA:KJ7/PHONE:LE2/CSC:KJ7 (RWC) and if I click on Firmware Upgrade and Initialization I get a message saying SGH-I727R does not support initializing.
Am I doing something wrong? Can you get the update from Kies if your phone is root?
Thanks.
What is the build date of this Rogers ICS update?
If I'm on a ROM can I just go ahead and update via keis? Or so I have to reinstall an official build first?
Really not sure I want to revert back to TouchWiz from SKY ICS though, any comments on the Rogers build?
