GPS problem after official update. Please help - Captivate General

Dear all,
My gps in my phone did not work right when I bought it a few months ago. I followed the instruction in this forum to change the setting under LbsTestMode. After that it had an acceptable performance (5 mins lock time)<=== I think I am a nice guy.
A few days ago, I updated using the official update method. Now the lock time may be more than 15mins, and it makes turn by turn error. Basically it misleads me instead of help me when the gps gives me instruction.
Please help

Can't help, but I can confirm that the AT&T "upgrade" has made my Captivate GPS worse than it already was.
I can see 8 or maybe 9 satellites, but no lock ... it will eventually lock, but is going to take AGES to do so.
Didn't have this problem before the update.

Remember search is your friend. Search the main thread for "gps fix" and find
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=61448966
See if any of those ideas help.
Added: The only thing that has helped my phone, regardless of the rom I'm using, is the gpsjm9.zip

I have also been having the same issues with my wifes Captivate (mine on Serendipity works fine). None of the "fixes" have done anything so far and have been looking for a modem I can safely flash to her phone that wont brick it and has better GPS capabilities.

Just find a way to start in 5 sec
I used GPS test (free app). It took 5 secs to lock my location. And then I went back to google map. It displayed the location at once
However, I could not get the gps lock if I only start google map and let google map look for my gps information

I have been using GPS Status on her phone to try to get a lock and never see any satellites at my house, whereas my phone gets a lock in about 3 seconds in the same location using GPS Status.

GPS Lock Times

I know there are MANY threads to the GPS issues and I am not having problems with GPS lag. I have searched and read and already have the tweaks installed (running the Elite rom rc2 which already had all the tweaks setup) and changed the no data sleep timeout to 1.5 seconds. I also tried on my original radio version, 32 and now have 28 and see no difference in GPS lock times. It will never lock on using Google Maps or iGuidance. In google Maps it says "seeking gps satellites (0)..." for about 5 min then says your gps receiver is having trouble tracking satellites etc. The only way I can get it to work is to use GPS Test, let it get a lock which usually take 5-10 mins, then close GPS Test and open either Google Maps or iGuidance and it will then work fine.
What is also strange is that when using GPS Test, the only way I can get it to work is to have the GPS info set to auto. It will scan then find the gps on com port 4 and 9600 baud. Then it will start up and try to lock on. The next time I run it it will already be on com port 4 and 9600 baud but won't find the gps device. I have to set it back to auto, and restart GPS Test, then it finds it.
There has GOT to be a way to fix the gps lock time on this thing. I have tried with A-GPS on and off and tried with quick-gps and saw no difference in lock speeds. Interesting thing though, I guess Google Maps will using cell tower location to identify where you are? When I use it without gps being turned on, or while it is searching for satellites, and I click "my location" it gets a fairly accurate location on the map.
It seems to me that the issue is with the com port and communication. Almost like the gps won't come out of sleep mode or something and gps test is the only program that can "wake" it.
Thanks for any info.
I am in the exact same situation as you. My TP fails to lock satelites 98% of the times i try.
I have read everything posted about TP GPS on this forum, i have tryed most ROM's and almost all available radio's, i have tryed most tweeks and all that in different set-up.
And after all that my GPS lock's rarely (2-5% of the times i try), and most importantly it doesent seem to be related to the radio nor to the ROM. At this moment i tend to think that i was unlucky with my TP that perhaps is from a lot of TP's with retarded GPS module.
From the forums it seems that most of the ppl dont experience this extrem problem with the GPS, it seems that most of the ppl around only experience laggy gps module update.
Atm i am still waiting for Elite RC3 hopeing that perhaps they'll bring a new gps driver, that will solve my problem.
In case Elite RC3 doesent help i will revert to stock hard-spl/radio/ROM and ill take it to the warranty service.
Sadly this problem with the GPS from my TP blackens my experience with it.
Are you guys sitting in your homes trying to get a lock? because then it is very unlikely you'll ever get a lock.
I have to go outside and wait about 1 minute to get a lock and then its fine. However, I DO have to use the HTC gps tool to get a lock before I can use google maps or any other gps program.
I am outside with no obstructions. I did find this app and may play around with it. So far I havne't been able to get it to get a lock unless I use GPS Test first.

My Telus Touch Pro locks in 3-5 seconds every time after modifying the GPS and adding the correct IP settings for Telus' AGPS. This combined with OCN8 makes for an excellent GPS device.
The guide for the GPS hack was from this forum, just can't recall where.
I have the same problem with GPS Test as you all described. I am now running qsqa's PROven ROM and I noticed following: GPS Test often fails to start-up the GPS receiver, but VisualGPSce worked every time I tried. It is a free software, included in the PROven ROM. If u use a different ROM, you can download it from here: http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm
Give it a try, it sure helped me!!!!

Adding Juice to your GPS on your Raphael

First of all, i apologise for the "catchy" title.
For this past week, i have been flashing my TP, with various firmwares / radios etc. However, i decided to go with the new stock ROM released by HTC,
[-HTC Touch Pro-MRII-RUU_Raphael_hTC_Asia_WWE_5.07.707.2_Radio_Signed_Raphael_52.58.25.30_1.11.25.01_Ship]
But i am sure this will work even for users of different ROMS.
Anyway, with this and alot of other ROMS, i faced this issue. Poor GPS reception. Mind you, AGPS is not included in the Asian version of the ROM, since we don't use it , and most probably AGPS uses data connection, which is quite expensive here. Anyway, even after tweaking the registry (followed one of the great threads here), the GPS was horrible. After updating the quickgps, i took my phone, and placed it beside my window. About 10 ~ 15 minutes later, it had fixed it self to a few sattelites. 10 ~ 15 minutes is alittle bit too long for me.
When i took it outside (after re-starting the phone) it still took about 10 minutes to get a signal. Later on, it becomes even harder to fix to sattelites after a few reboots. I don't know what the problem was.
I read around the forums and there was a thread about the RADIO, 1.12.25.19. People were saying how good it was for the battery life of the phone and especially GPS. Some even claimed to have gotten a GPS fix within 10 seconds, and some could even get gps singnals indoors. I flashed my RADIO to ver 1.12.25.19 and there still wasn't much changes on the GPS part.
Today morning, i decided to hard reset my phone and then play around a little and to my amazement i found a gem. So here is what i did.
After hard resetting my phone, i didn't install apps. I didn't apply any registry fix for the gps. Everything was in it's original state. I installed Msoft .net CF 3.5 . This is because it is required to run an app, GPSTOOLPRO.exe , so it could hunt for this sattelites. An alternative to GPSTEST, but i like this better.
So here is what i Did. **my quickgps isn't updated**
I went to
Start > Settings > System [TAB] > External GPS
GPS program port, I set it to (NONE). Then i pressed ok.
Then i clicked on External GPS again.
This time my GPS Program Port value is (NONE) and i went to the Hardware Tab.
GPS Hardware Port, you can put in any value you like. Mine was COM4 and the BAUD RATE is 115200.
Somehow once you press Ok, and you come back to the same menu, You will see that your GPS hardware Port is set to NONE, and your BAUD RATE is it's default.
I am not sure if i am the only one facing this issue , but it's no problem
After setting up the GPS hardware port and the BAUD RATE as above, Do not close the menu. Also Make sure , [Manage GPS automatically] from the Access Tab is enabled.
From here, Do not press ok. Let the menu remain and run in the background. Then i went on the start bar, went to file explorer and ran my app, GPSTOOLPRO.exe to search for sattelites and get a fix.
The Result= I could get satelite signal about 12 of them almost immediately & fix in less than a minute. I could also get a fix indoors where previously i couldn't. The GPS certainly has improved.
Do take note, I tried using gpstest but it was unable to detect the port. So i suggest searching for "GPSTOOLPRO" around XDA and use that instead.
Hope this helps
Thanks for sharing It will be very useful
how are you getting signal inside? must be alot of windows. lol
What do you mean signal inside? You mean indoors?
And yes, about 2 + 1 windows would be open. 2 (external GPS + GPSTOOLPRO) + 1 (your choice of gps navigator)

I love to try this however can't find GPS Tool pro on this forum ...any link please
gps indoors nice, i guess they finally added that rubidium oscellator.
lolol
sadly for me, this doesn't seem to work. i hard reset yesterday and am running on a bloat-free fuze stock rom and radio. I installed google maps, att navigator (only way i can EVER get a fix after 5 minutes), and CF 3.5. Trying this now standing inside my bay window facing the a river with lots of open sky and i'm not getting anything
i read the thread this morning about teh .19 radio and i can't wait to try it out this weekend!
what radio are you on? mine is: 1.02.25.32 (stock ATT)
Here is a link for the GPSToolPro.

I would try the leaked AT&T 1.12.25.19 radio. It supposedly opens up more slots for sats than the previous radios, which should help getting a fix.
Also which stock ROM are you using? The one it was shipped with or the leaked one? I would upgrade to the leaked AT&T one because it enabled aGPS, which works wonders in getting a fix.
EDIT: Use the link below and download the leaked ROM, it also includes the leaked AT&T upgraded radio...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487994
If you don't have a data connection (too expensive) then how can you be using QuickGPS?
If you do have a data connection then I highly recommend upgrading your rom to a 5.08.502.1 derivative along with keeping the raphael radio you just tried then changing your settings to the public AGPS servers described in Da_G's AGPS thread in the Raphael ROM forum.
this probably doesn't help any, but I have a TP that is about a week old, flashed with mighty rom, radio 1.03.15, and I can sit in my living room, two windows completely covered, and I can get 9 satellites to lock in under 5 seconds. This works in google maps, igo8, really any gps program. I do not use quickgps (I think that is what it is called) or anything else. mine has worked great from the day I brought it home. I have only tried a couple of radios and all worked fine with gps. I am wondering if the newer ones are "better" on gps?

If you're using a Fuze (AT&T variant) this sums up how to get GPS running on your phone: http://www.fuzemobility.com/the-fuze-and-gps/

Firefly GPS performance

I recently installed the Firefly ROM onto my Cappy. Prior to this I was on esclair 2.1 for the longest time. The GPS on my phone was not great but it worked. By that I meant it took 15-30 seconds to get a lock. Sometime it would put me on the neighboring street but overall it served the purpose. However, after flashing Firefly, the GPS just doesn't work at all. It would take over 1 minute to get a lock and then kept losing it. On a 10 minute drive today, it lost GPS lock 3 times with full view of the sky. When I checked the LbsTestMode on the phone I noticed the SkyHook option was not there which was weird.
Anyone have any suggestion? Which custom ROM has the best GPS performance?
I would try reading into the many theads (some stickied at top) on how to improve/ what affects the GPS.
I have been reading threads about GPS settings. One of the thing most of these thread talked about is SkyHook, which is missing from the LbsTestMode screen on the Firefly ROM. Anyone know why?
hmm weird its not there... but my gps is locking onto me within 20 meters in 15 seconds.. fresh ff update today.,.
Google took out the option to skyhook in 2.2
they had a falling out with the company.
Tested it again on my way to work this morning and it was totally unusable. For the entire 10 minutes drive, it was either trying to lock or showing me at a previous location.
I guess I'll have to go back to 2.1, sigh.........
There's a ROM-specific sticky in Q&A for this kind of thing. Please use it.

GPS Lock Troubles

I'm sorry if this is addressed somewhere, but I couldn't find anything solid while searching. I use my G2x every day with SportyPal Pro for my bike rides. I am currently running stock 2.2.2 with root and am having some difficulty attaining an initial GPS lock. It seems like when I go to launch any GPS app, it will not get a lock. To get it to work, I have to open GPS Test, select tools, and clear out the A-GPS data. After doing this, it looks almost instantly and will keep a lock forever.
The next day, however, I must do the same thing, and this happens nearly 100% of the time. The funny thing to me is when I open GPS Test, it will show a strong signal from a lot of satellites, around 7-9, but it doesn't use these signals to find the lock. Again, after resetting the A-GPS data, it works every time almost instantly.
I have just dealt with this but it is getting more frustrating. Today, GPS Test wouldn't load, just kept showing a blank screen and force closing eventually, even after fix permissions, clear data, uninstall and reinstall. Only after another reboot, would GPS Test even load. I can't explain because I don't know well how the inner software works, but the GPS seems to have a hard time relocating itself when using the cached A-GPS data. Any fixes that anyone knows of, or things I could try?
Thanks a lot in advance.

When you launch the app and go to the satellite view screen, press menu, and it is one of the options.

Sadly, I am having the same problem
I think I'm having the same problem too: I can pick up plenty of satellites (more than the 3-4 required for a lock), and they turn green, but I don't actually get positioning data available.

Well, I guess if you are seeing the same problem, it could be a software failure. Why can't Android phone makers release a phone with GPS that works out of box? Do they not test these things? Hopefully the Gingerbread update addresses this issue.
I have GPS issues often as well.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
I don't have this problem but I have heard of others that do. My device locks in literally 3 seconds and is accurate to 5 feet. I have to say it's the best GPS I have ever used.
I think this problem is an android issue not hardware. I have to load gps test on my vibrant before being able to get a lock also. Wont lie the lock time on this phone is considerably longer but when finally does lock its strong and accurate.
via LG G2x
It takes me forever to get a GPS lock too. However, once it finally gets one, it's fairly strong and accurate.
Gps is way crap now.my vibrant beats the crap out of it... I'm getting like 40000 feet accuracy. It eventually works itself out but still crap..
In gps status in tools deleting the a gps stuff it takes a long time (5 seconds) vs my vibrants agps data. Vibrants clears instantly almost like the lg remembers too much causing conflict....
I cant find my location via gps in google maps. In the gps status app, it appeard to be locking as fix/sats shows 3/3. Ive cleared agps data and also tried to download agps data. Does anyone experience a similar issue? Any suggestions as what elsd i can try?
I dont think its the hardware because it did work the last time i tried about 2 weeks ago. Since then I tried to use a location spoofing app (that has since been uninstalled and mock locations disabled).
On the O2X the mongs at LG left out the gps.conf file, adding it manually sped up lock time no end. I guess it's possible they did the same on the G2X?
I actually exchanged a G2x yesterday that was having problems with GPS
Regardless of whether it was on stock or not, rooted or otherwise, my phone would not find any more than 4 satellites, and would never lock. Factory resets did nothing. My fiancee's phone, however, would find 8 or more within 10 seconds when both phones were set right next to each other. Both phones had a 4/05 manufacture date.
Because of that, I was pretty sure my issue was hardware, as I was never able to get the GPS to work properly. The phone they gave me yesterday (4/12 manufacture date) does seem to work ok, though the screen bleeding a bit worse (but that doesn't bother me *that* much)

[Q] GPS not locking with demo video

I have a new OnePlus One which I updated to 44S. The GPS will not lock on signal reliably since I received it.
Neither Google Maps and the GPS Status tool cannot lock onto to GPS or it can take up to ten minutes for a GPS lock or it will never lock. I have tried High Accuracy and Device Only Location settings, also updated Google Maps, and applied all stock OnePlusOne updates. Indoors, I can lock onto perhaps 0-1 satellites and outdoors about 2-5. Eventually, I can lock up to 11-12 if I let it sit for a while outside. GPS signal is always lost immediately while in High Accuracy mode after I start moving the vehicle.
I have emailed OnePlus support and got a reply back the next day asking me to create a video. Therefore, I created a video which is linked below on Youtube which shows what it does in Device Only mode.
youtube.com slash watch?v=kDcLk_IuKQ4
Sorry for the URL, I'm a new user here. My question is what can I expect from OnePlus support on this issue and does anyone else have this problem? Today I got an answer to my last reply with the video that I should just do a factory reset and update to 44S from a different tech, so it's not going too well now and I don't think they really try to resolve anything.
I have read lots of threads on the Internet regarding running various fix apps (such as Faster GPS) which means I need to root it but I saw limited success in those posts (I have not rooted yet). I personally think it's a hardware problem since GPS Status cannot lock onto anything unless I give it a lot of time and clear blue sky.
I apologize if this is a repeat post or I committed any other newbie offesnes, but I could not determine a real solution to this problem. Should I keep pursuing an exchange or refund or spend hours more rooting and dorking around with gps.conf settings?
Thanks!
Usually I leave my GPS turned off and when I read your post I went ahead and turned it on and set it for 'Device Only' and experienced the issue. rebooted the phone with the GPS turned on and now I get an almost instantaneous locking.
not sure if you leave your GPS off like me or if you have it on all the time but If it was off when you started the phone try turning it on and reboot the phone and see if you'll get better results.

I have done the reboots. Does not make a difference in getting a lock or not. The GPS has to be left ON for a while to find the necessary number of satellites needed to lock.
Same issue
Did you get a solution from one plus? I have the exact same issue. I use my GPS for driving 3 or 4 times per day since the 44s update I have had 2 GPS locks which I believe is a problem.
Hopefully the upcoming update fixes all!!
Hi, not sure if you found a fix but I had same issue with my OPO so I contact OPO support and they instructed the following:
Please try this software patch as this may fix the issue for you meanwhile we have assigned this ticket to our specialist who will get back to you soon.
