Just got the NS yesterday and am already loving it. The only thing is I have both a gmail account and a uni exchange one. I've added both to the stock email app (so not using the gmail app) and was delighted to discover there was a unified inbox
Now the annoying bit. I can create a shortcut that takes me to either one, and I can create a shortcut that takes me to the account selection menu where I can select the combined inbox, but why isn't there a way to create a shortcut directly to the combined inbox?? There's no sense in that at all.
Has anyone managed to create this elusive shortcut? I suspect it can be done with AnyCut but I have no idea what the path may be or how to find out... Anyone has any ideas?
Best idea? Forward everything from one account to the other, preferable from your university account to Gmail.
I have no idea for your original question, though.

Anyone found a way to create a shortcut directly to the combined inbox?

Just got my Captivate yesterday, and I am having a few issues with some (what I thought were) basic functions on a smartphone:
1. How can I change the font size?
2. How can I separate the email acocunts (non-Gmail acocunts)?
3. How can I use a different signature for each email account? (it seems that "Email" groups all accounts and uses just one signature)
4. How do I move emails to folders in Exchange?
5. Is there a built in alarm clock?
6. How can I get the browser auto-wrap text like Opera?
7a. Are some of these above features disabled or tweaked because of Samsung's own UI?
7b. If so, after root, will these options come back? or become available?
after root, can you just remove the Samsung UI?
any helps would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.
I'm in the same boat you are, and I'm sure we're not the only ones.
5. alarm clock is accessible via the Clock application
6. double-tapping the screen will wrap the browser text on most pages. This hasn't been consistent for me though.
As far as moving to folders, I've only used one Android phone that allowed this. It was the BackFlip and it only had the option because it is using a custom exchange client. All the Android phones using the built-in client (even though the Captivate is customized) seem to be missing this option.
1. I don't think you can change the font size. Samsung has some pay-ware fonts available and the method I used to change fonts on my N1 required root and was a global change. I'm sure it would screw up the UI if you did. If it's a specific application, maybe you could look for alternative apps in the market that can, like using K9 instead of mail for email.
2. Hit menu > accounts and you should see a list plus a combined inbox.
3. Be glad you have a signature. The stock Android 2.1 mail doesn't even have that! It doesn't sync calendar items either. That's two things this mail software has over stock Android.
4. No idea. Seems like a stupid omission since you can see all your folders at the top.
7a. Yes. It's a Samsung-specific mail program.
7b. No. Look on the market for other options. A coworker likes Touchdown, but it's a $20 program.
I have a Droid and now the Captivate. I previously had a backflip. The Droid and Captivate are using the standard google exchange client. The Captivate has skinned the client to some extent but the menu and options are the same as the Droid. The BackFlip has a custom exchange client with unique UI and options. The BackFlip has a move to folder option as well.
As stated, TouchDown is an option for anyone looking for full Exchange support. It will even sync notes and tasks. But, the contact syncing with TouchDown is a little hodgepodge and requires manual intervention. You will basically have to manually sync your contacts to the phone every time you add contacts in exchange.

LOL. the Backflip was one phone i never considered getting, yet it seems to have the best Exchange experience out of the box?
this is such a basic email feature I still can't believe it isn't included... and I still can't believe it's not butter.

2. i was able to get into just the one mailbox, but was hoping by separating it I could get the separate signature.
3. another feature so basic it seems ridiculous it is omitted.

TouchDown is nice. I was using it on my TouchPro 2 with XDAndroid.
however, it is slow as hell on the Captivate. I read somewhere on XDA someone mentioned moving the DB to the SD card, because of the whole lag issue due to the fact that Samsung has all apps/data installed/saved to SD card? is that right? anyway, moving it to SD card helps, A LOT.

Hey guys,
I am trying this app as Samsung is apparently never going to update the Captivate to 2.2. and therefor we will never get the newer Gmail app that has font size adjustment, and other new features. Sorry but my eyes are a bit sick of looking at tiny text in the 2.1 Gmail app. So I installed K-9.
K-9 is pretty nice! Very customizable but I have a few questions:
1. There are so many settings in this app. Does anybody know of a good help site for this app? I just want to make sure that it pushes new emails to the device like the Gmail app does. What do I need to do to make sure this happens? It is showing 3 separate Sent folders. Not sure why I have that many.
2. Lots of images in emails are showing up as little blue question marks. (similar to flash sites on Safari on iPhone). What is happening here? These images show up fine on the iPhone Email app.
Thanks guys!
So it is pushing messages to K-9, but when I delete a message from K-9 inbox, the gmail inbox (webmail or Gmail app) does not reflect these changes.
Can anybody explain this behaviour?
Thanks!
I've also noticed that but it doesn't really bother me too much considering how much space Gmail gives me. So I don't really bother to delete anything anyway.
I just like my inboxes to match. Maybe there is some setting I am missing. I really want to keep using K-9 as it is really a pleasure to read email with.
not sure if i am right but pretty sure 2.2 is coming out mid-late Nov (next month)....

Unfortunately the Samsung press release is from Samsung UK, and is a little vague about 2.2 for carriers outside the UK getting 2.2.
I am not holding my breath.

Have you adjusted the following setting correctly?
Menu > Settings > Account Settings > Fetching Mail > "When I delete a message"

Dude, thanks!
Upon some more playing around, I have determined this is really a nice email app and I am shocked it is free. Hopefully it is secure. Amazing how customizable it is.
Do you use it instead of Gmail or Email on your device?

I use it for my non-Gmail email accounts. Really like it. I set it to auto download emails only when Active sync is on my phone which gives me an easy way to control this function without going into settings. I don't like my email to get downloaded while I am sitting at my computer at work, but all other times. Use Tasker then to turn this setting on and off at appropriate times of day and week. Never could get this to work exactly like this in WM. I love Android!!!

Yes, I do. I use it for a work account and a second personal account but keep gmail on it's own app. There are some options that make it very nice for multiple accounts and easy access. Color coding individual accounts, alternating sync times and setting "time of day" sync schedules are just some of them.
I have tried a few email apps now and K-9 slaps them all. I am having trouble finding issues or a lack of options in this free app. Almost doesn't make since. It's worth contributing to for sure.
I really want to be able to 'Share' to my calendar - that is, for example i'm on a webpage, and i want to put the website name/address on to my calendar as an event. I want to hit 'Share', and have it share to the calendar. Same should be for other apps, but mainly browser sharing to calendar would be great.
There's an app on the market that does just this called Text2Calendar, but it was last updated in August 2010. After installing it, it works just as you'd hope. On a webpage, you can share to this app, it will open the calendar where it's prefilled the website name as the name of the event and the address is pasted in to the description. Only problem is that when you hit save, it automatically crashes Text2Calendar and the event never saves. I've tried this app on ICS and JellyBean and same result. It always crashes.
I can't be the only one who religiously uses their calendar, and there are similar extensions available on chrome, just wish my galaxy s iii could do it too! Thanks!
Link to play market app here:

Nice tool and yup it crashes when it wants to write to /data/data/...calendar.db - seems the colum displayName is not quite correct..
Fix for ICS calendar
Ok, did tinker with it and fixed the issue with ICS calendar - well at least here, but please test it.
Edit - With english translation
Hey man! It works! Sort of - i mean it definitely doesn't crash anymore, which is FREAKING AWESOME. I'm impressed.
Only thing if you can change, would make it great. It pops up a calendar entry screen where you can save the details, and then a second screen pops up with foreign text and tells you to select a calendar.
is there any way that it will just share it to the internal calendar sharing? thanks either way bud!
Yeah I was wondering where the japanish part of the app would appear I have only one account, so I don't see this dialog, I also use a different calendar...but I'll look into the translation.
Edit : New version post 3
Hopefully this will sort the language issue, but about the internal sharing thingy I don´t quite follow. The entries in the picture, are they different accounts? and if they are there is little I can do about it as this the way of android or original coder..Might be a settings in your calendar to set a default account, but that´s my guess..
Awesome work man. I tried the new apk but it looks to be the same as the first one you posted.
The only other thing I was wondering if you could change - whenever you share to the app, it doesn't allow you to select a time for the event. It automatically puts the event as 30 minutes from now, it doesn't allow you to select the time. Can you change that? thanks again for your amazing work!

..totally unexpected lol
and the english arrays was a waste too?
just for comparison, I have replaced stock calendar with aCalendar
,have one google account, on CM9 4.0.4, and txt2cal is working with no issues. What´s unexpected is how well it picks up in other apps to, thanks!
Could you try to only sync one default account, for test, and see if anything changes?
obvious differences in setup makes this into a ghost hunt, for my part. A log would be last resort, so if catlog is reporting errors you will need to post them here, but chances are slim to none what to make of it
A friend of mine is getting her first ever smartphone and I want to help her transition as smoothly as possible. She will not give up her Hotmail account, so I need to find an app that will give her access to her emails, and preferably gives push notifications and allows easy attaching of documents.
I've been suckling on the Google/GMail teat for years and was mildly surprised when I 'unfroze' the native email app - it seems pretty decent. But it only gives options for attaching of pictures or videos, unlike the GMail app which has a generic 'attach file' button. Obviously I know that I could find my document using a file browser or other app and then 'share' it to the Email app, but this sort of 'well you can't do it this way, you have to do it that way' crap is what I want to avoid for my friend. I want everything to be obvious, easy and for her introduction to Android to be effortless.
Any suggestions, please? A free email app, with push, and easy file attachments of all types.
EDIT: I have just signed up for a Hotmail account so I can test apps myself. The Outlook.com app seems alright - anyone got experience using it? Any fatal flaws?
Try using [email protected] Mail Pro app. I use it since it pretty much unifies all of my email accounts in a neat way with plenty of customizations available for your taste. I especially like the fact that unlike with the built in app, I can create a unified email widget for all my accounts instead of having multiple widgets and it allows me to attach any kind of file, and has a pretty advanced editor. Try the free version first and see if you'd like to upgrade to the pro.

I use Aqua Mail which works very well for me, can sync with POP and IMAP accounts. Link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kman.AquaMail.
Thanks guys, but after testing it myself I think my friend will be happy enough with the Outlook.com app (although the interface certainly isn't to my taste, it is simple enough and does what she needs).

Hey everyone, I need some help. Since the Gmail app updated to the "Material Design" look, I've had an annoyance when trying to switch between my email accounts. In order to quickly switch, you can tap on the icon for the email address you wish to switch to. The problem is, two of my accounts are using the default Gmail silhouette, so I can't tell which one is which from the menu:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwgHw8RSjQikR0pfYWUyWXhxeFE/view
For all three of my accounts, I have uploaded a profile picture via the general tab in Gmail settings in the browser. My personal Gmail shows my picture, no problem, but for some reason the other two don't come through. I'm not sure if it matters, but both are Google Apps for Work accounts . Anyone know how I can fix this?
Thanks,
shingy
Bump. 73 views and no one has any ideas how I might be able to fix this? Anything thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
