Cannot access ext. sd card in gTab from windows via USB cable - G Tablet General

I cannot access my external sd card that's in my gTab from windows via the USB cable. I seem to remember that when I first bought it , I could see both the internal and external storage when I connected the gTab to Windows via USB (when it still had stock ROM). Now I am running rooted VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0b5.1.1 and when I connect it via USB to windows I can only see the internal storage (I couldn't see it when I tried cyanogenmod either). I can access both brom the gTab just fine and if I take out the ext. sd card, windows reads it just fine.
Any idea why and/or how to access both internal and external storage from windows when gTab is plugged in via USB to windows?

As far as I know you could never access the external sdcard from the computer by usb

I load things from my external SD to internal SD and visa versa using ghost commander. Not a super big deal just one extra step. At this point I almost forgot I had to do that to move files between them and my PC.

i use a app that mounts them both

The way I found to access my external sd card from my computer is to ftp into my gTab using filezilla on my computer and SwiFTP FTP Server (available free from Market) on my gTab. Here is another post that talks about how to access the ext. sd card remotely: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869844

Thanks, I know some other people will want to try this app.
Not a great fit for me as I dislike the delays built into a lot of free apps.

I just plug a USB thumb drive into my PC, download the files onto that then plug it into my tablet and download from the USB drive onto the SDCARD. Easy like pie.
Works the other direction too!!!

[Q] External SD Card Access from PC?

Can't access the SD card from the PC....
I'm using MS File Explorer on the PC and am connected by USB cable, and can see folders that appear to be the data on the internal memory of Gtab, but don't see anything for the external SD card.
Can you get to your external SD card from your PC?? Any idea how I can get it to show up? Want to be able to transfer files, but am currently having to keep pulling it out of the Gtab and put it into the SD card slot on the laptop to get access.
I'm running Vegan b3. Thanks in advance!!
Hi,
If you share your pc drive, you can use ES File Explorer, by selecting LAN instead of local.

Fyi, I just tested this (network sharing) and was able to access shares on a Win7 machine and on a WinXP machine. For the latter, I had to use the "guest" user, with no password.

I think he wants to do it the other way around; access the external sdcard from the PC.
One of the glaring goofs by the OEM devs and the firmware. If a microsd is in the slot, we should see two logical drives when the device is mounted.
Incredible, Galaxy S and Tab versions with internal space shows two drives (as they should). Another issue with the G is the microsd unmount function is problematic- at best.

[Q] How to Push as mass storage device in PC?

Hello all
I bought a P6200 recently! but when I connect it to PC it doesn't mount as USB drive?
As well in settings menu I couldn't find it to set it to mass storage mode!(like my Xperia neo and other Android phones) even it doesn't have USB part
Would u help me ?
It's ridiculous that can't be done!
yup... it is ridiculous because it really cant be done...
That' s not true. After connecting my Tab Plus to PC, I got new wino opened with 2 drives. One is my MC and second Phone memory so I can copy whatever I want. Try in settings-application-development...
that is in MTP mode...
The reason is because of how the GTab 7+ uses internal/external memory.
It's impossible for Android to unmount the memory because it's constantly in use. This provides a lot of benefits for performance and application space.
However, the trade off is that unmounting the partition would cause android to crash. So you can't unmount it to let a PC mount the partition. The work around for this is Android hosting the partition as an MTP device and doing file changes by proxy for the PC.
Personally, I haven't found a situation where I needed to do something on the file system that MTP prevented me from doing. At least so far...
I too have had no problems so far transfering files using MTP but its very slow. So I've used a card reader to transfer files to the sdcard when I wanted to do a quick transfer of a larger amount of files such as mp3's.
Hard to mount the sd card as a drive for use with synctoy is one example of where mtp is inconvenient at best.

Mass Storange mode is no longer available since Android3/4 deives as there is no seperate internal SD card. All Android tabs connect with MTP mode.
I use SyncToy as well to backup the whole of /sdcard. But that's for the P1000, now I can't do the same on the P6200. All the other available options are either too slow or too cumbersome to use on a daily basis.

Has anyone tried the "Multi Mount SD-Card" app on this device? It mounts the SD card as USB mass storage without dismounting from the android system.
I found mine mounted them both only after i inserted a micro sd card into the device.

I have just installed Multi Mount SD-Card v2.12 and found that it is not compatible with the device. It's disappointing.
I would suggest setting up adb and using Android commander (it is a GUI for windows)

[Q] Faves Pad - model yx10a03

I have a faves pad 10.1 model yx10a03, and i'm having trouble with storage.
When I go to settings and storage it says I have total space 0.00, even with an 8gb msd card installed. so I'm thinking the tab has lost all its mount points.
I have tried 6 different micro sd cards as well and none of them seem to be recognized, I get a message " preparing sd card then nothing registers.
What do I do? I can get apps to install , but anything that needs more space like google earth etc fails during install.
Some one help...I can't find a firmware update or a custom rom from anywhere.
Iv'e tried factory data reset, no joy. I need a total system reset but not sure how.
Scott
When you connect to your computer or using something like Astro can you see or navigate to the "external" memory card drive?
If I connect it without a Micro sd card inserted I get nothing.
But if I connect the pad to my P.C via usb cable with a Micro sd card in it, it registers as external 8gb drive which I can send files to etc.
If I use astro, it sees that the sd card as a mount but nothing inside. Also doesn't show any size or storage available.
I could do with rooting method and put a custom rom on it but can't find anything about it.

Phone/Tablet inits the device but it's OS (drivers?) can't read the format.

Astro (AFAIK) ques the device's I/O system for file spec and info. It (again AFAIK) just sends commands through the Tablet's OS. Kinda like running LS might in IRIX or some other unix.
I could do with rooting method and put a custom rom on it but can't find anything about it.

I have no idea and I'm a total n00b but... I wonder if the Tablet uses a proprietary/virtual FS on the SD card instead of the direct embedded card driver?
Is there anything in the instructions about formatting the card? Did you try to format the card in the tablet yet?
So this would be like when I format an SD card on my Mac... It can no longer be read by any other device until it's re-formatted by a non-mac device... But if mounted by said external device acting as a "card-reader" then the connected Mac can perform I/O normally. Only in this case your tablet is like the mac in that situation. Errr, if that made any sense.
Anyway, try to format the card on your tablet and see if that works.

[SOLVED]Slightly urgent - Multiple OTG devices on Lollipop

Hi all,
I have a sd card that i want to copy its contents to an external hard drive. I have the following
OTG cable
USB Mains powered hub - This one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Te...8&qid=1419902366&sr=1-6&keywords=usb+main+hub
1 tb external hard drive(NTFS)
Micro SD card (Fat32)
Micro sd card adaptor
I have connected the external hard drive and the micro sd card adaptor to the usb hub, then connected the usb hub to the OTG cable which is then connected to my phone, however Stickmount is not recognising the external hard drive, nor is Nexus Media Importer. Does anyone know if this is a limitation wihtin Lollipop (5.01) as it use to work in KitKat.
Should i just go back to KK?
I am rooted and on 5.01
if someone has any ideas please post, as i need to get this sorted wihtin the next few days
Thanks

To add to this, your portable hard drive is likely formatted in NTFS. Look at the OP in the thread beekay201 posted for instructions on how to handle this.
Thanks for the link..... I placed the files needed into the sdcard root, but it still does not recognise the 2 drives together
You need to provide more detail, like, help us to help you.
This external HDD you got, have you tried to hook it up, without using the USB hub? The external HDD itself, it's self powered, or draws power from the phone (or the hub)?
Paste a logcat to hastebin.com when you connect the HDD or the sdcard to the phone through OTG cable for us to see.
What StickMount version (I mean, literally the version number, not if pro or free) are you using?

right.. if you had searched about this, you'd have found lots of people having issues with L+Es file explorer. use another file explorer, and be done with it.
also, there's nothing wrong with stickmount or the logs. if it works with another FM, i'd just stick with that.
if you want to keep trying ES, be advised that you might need to try the "PIE PATCH" - fixes issues with root access/ES. I'm feelin generous (and bored) so here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/fix-bypassing-pie-security-check-t2797731
Right,i've got it working using the mains power plug on the USB hub. also ES File explorer is also working if i go via the folder structure rather than the left hand side menu.

No, I doubt it, but, there is an app called Drivedroid(and similar apps) that allow you to boot Windows or Linux on your PC directly from your android devices internal or external storage.

But theres no way to add those functions directly inside the android system?
I dont want to start a image of a operating system, I want to start a operating system over usb who is directly
installed on the phone micro sd card (Theres no image file, the files of the system are directly on the sd card)
Why it is so hard to change the normal mass storage mode of Android to a "Harddisk mass storge mode" that would be the easiest way?

Because, it would require formatting the device's storage in the same way that you would to create a bootable USB, that would make the storage no longer useable by the android system. In other words, you can't have it both ways where the android device can use the storage as mass storage AND at the same time use that same storage as a bootable drive.

My problem is, I would need a tool, or something, what mounts the android SD Card on the computer with flipped RMB (Removable media bit), so its mounted as harddisk, that would be all I would need, but that seems not possible on android. The RMB of the micro SD
card is not flippable, otherwise the micro SD would become a harddisk by itself, but to flip the bit in the micro sd card controller, we would need a MPtool for the micro sd card controller, and this tool has only the micro sd manufaturer. So I would need some rt of filtering app on the android who allows mounting the micro sd on the computer, but filters the rmb to tell the computer that the micro SD is a Harddrive, but that seems not possible?

Hard drives are not expensive, why not just buy a new hard drive?
The PC doesn't access the device's storage directly, it has to communicate with the storage through the device's hardware(CPU) and the device has to be powered on or the PC can't do anything with the storage, that is the roadblock that you aren't going to get past because hard drives do not work the same way. It is just a completely different animal than a hard drive or a typical USB drive. You are probably wasting your time, find a different solution because this one doesn't have much chance of working, whether you choose to accept that or not.
I could be wrong, but, I don't think that is the case.
