Samsung Vibrant files glitch? - General Questions and Answers

i have the original Vibrant...everything works flawlessly...always has...until now...not sure why, but for some reason, all of my videos in my gallery and songs in the music player, if i tap them to play, i get an error like "sorry, this video cannot be played" or "this is an unsupported media type"...even with the avatar that came preloaded...but if i turn the phone off...then back on...the videos and music play just fine...but after awhile, the same thing happens...just will not play anything and says its unsupported...i tried a factory reset and formatted the SD card because i had moved a few apps from SD storage to Phone (thinking that was the issue)...it wasnt...and the factory reset did nothing...i contacted T-Mo and theyre sending me a replacement device...but if at all possible, id like to keep the one i have as opposed to a possible refurb...anyone have any experience with this issue or know of a fix? i have done no modifications to the phone...it was a stock 2.1 when i bought it new, and i updated to 2.2 the day it was released...the phone has always worked perfectly and ive never had an issue at all with it...this is what puzzles me the most...any help is much appreciated!

The issue is with 2.2. you should downgrade back to 2.1. or better yet, root it and put Bionix (or another ROM of choice) on it. Im a vibrant user myself

[Q] Hmm, Issues After Flashing New Rom, Stumped

Okay so,
My phone was functioning normally as it usually does. Right? Right. it was unrooted, stock, note that its been rooted successfully before) I happened upon the new gummycharged rom and the peanut butter jelly time kernal, so naturally I thought it is time to get off the fence and get some better software onto my phone. I consider myself computer savvy and made sure to read the accompanying documentation, faqs, etc. I then first wiped my phone and went to stock ED1 rooted. Flash went ok and I proceeded to reboot, everything is still good to go. I then reboot again to install the CWM and that flashes successfully, I boot into it, perform a data/cache wipe for fun, no problems. So I dropped the gummycharged rom onto my sd and flashed it, all good, then I flashed the kernal and all seemed well. Nice boot up time, calls, texts, internet, all was well. However, I went to play music so I scrolled on over to the stock music app and played a song, great its playing, lets shuffle to another. Nope, the music player freezes, does not proceed to the next song, and does not pass go to collect 200$. I then tried doubletwist, the AOSP music player off of the market, all same problem. I thought that maybe I had made an error so I went back and completely wiped. Wiped data/cache, format sd card, reinstall rom and kernal. Reboot and system works fine as before, still same problem with the music player even with just 5 songs to test with, I can play any of the 5 to start after a reboot, first song always plays no problem, I just can never switch to the next. What is going on? Why do I feel like a noob? Please tell me there is something simple I overlooked. Also the sdcard works fine for other stuff, downloads, installing apps off it, backing up to it, etc.
Did you apply the fix that Kjar has posted? Worth a shot. Did you wipe cache? Or maybe flash again.

[Q] mp3 decoding not working

Hi,
Just got the info from my children that mp3 decoding on their phones is not working (music player hangs).
Both have a Galaxy 3 updated with standard Android 2.2 (subversion is slightly different bcause of different phone customzations by the phone provider).
I tried different music players (stock, google music, winamp) but all causes the same effect: phone starts vibrating and the app crashes...
Of course, no troubles with any other media (video, youtube...).
Given all music apps are impacted, I suspect a problem in a system library.
I've searched in the forums, but found no mentions about my problem (strange, it is on two phones, so should be pretty common).
I'd like to stay with the stock rom, so I'd prefer either installing an app self contained (not using sytem libraries for decoding), or somehow fixing the system libraries w/o having to install a new rom.
I'd like to know if I'm the only one in this position, and if you have suggestions for a fix.
Thanks
You must do a hard reset of your phone.
Just type in *2767*3855# and your phone will restart.
Keep in mind that you will lose your data on your phone like: unsaved phone numbers, installed apps, mp3 (all are in your phone internal memory witch will get erased), those stored on you micro sd flash will not suffer any changes, so save your apps(or download them again), mp3,photos on your micro sd.
If this helps you please give me a thanks.
Hard reset done on one of the two phones, but problem is still there: mp3 player crashes (I've not yet re-installed 3rd party players, but bug is exactly the same as before the reset: mp3 starts playing few seconds, then phone vibrates and music hangs).
Rom on the two phones is JP4.
Also to note an other strange behavior: the phone shows a warning message when launching apps accessing the network (market, browser) to ask to activate mobile data connection... even when the phone is connected through wifi. This was not the case before the froyo update.
I'm not finding all this much normal...
Any further suggestion (I understand last resource is anyway installing Kyrillos rom)?
Thanks

I see. There is something you could do, and that is flashing the Rom again. Use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063940 to get the latest rom and flashing tools and here is the flashing tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778880, i can bet that this will fix your problem. Or you can go to a local samsung service for repair, you do have warranty?

On other forums I found the problem is not uncommon.
Songbird is not exceptional, but does not use the buggy system library and works like a charm.
I've removed the stock app icon just to avoid running it accidentally...
It's a pity not being able to share songs with google music (app is using the buggy lib)
may b sumthin wrong wid sd. backup ur sd data & format it.. via phone.. then restore backed uo data.. & then try if they give fcs anymore.. :/

I'm pulling my hair out with these custom rings please help

I have a Samsung Exhibit 2 that I just rooted. The main issue that I keep having and had before I rooted is with the custom ringtones. Before I rooted I tried everything I could to get them to stay, but every time someone would call who I designated a custom ring, the default ring would play. This happens about 50/50. I could not figure out why the phone was randomly getting confused about which ring to play. I've used the zedge app because people said it would create the right folders to put them in and it didn't work. I've used ringdroid and a few others. I have moved the actual files around to different folders on the phone using astro and even changed/created folders thinking that would fix it. Nothing has worked. It may work for a few hours or a day or so, but eventually it still reverts back to the default tone sporadically.
Here's where I'm at now. I just rooted the phone because I read that the reason why I was having trouble is because when the tones are on the sd card the phone sometimes loses them and goes into the internal memory to get the default. Which by the way that last statement is weird because even when it went to the default, I had a mp3 for it as well and it was not on the internal, but oh well. So I rooted and moved the ringtones to the system/media/ringtones folder I believe. Well as you can tell, it worked for most of the day yesterday. Now this morning someone called and boom, default ringtone again. I know that this is something that seems insignificant, but it's driving me crazy. I love to be able to hear the phone and know who's calling without looking at it. I've looked at about a dozen forums and tried everything and no luck. If anyone has any suggestions I'd much appreciate it.
So nearly a week later it's still an issue. Does anybody have any advice? It still seems very random on when it wants to work or not. Thanks.
So you installed a custom rom, put them on the interal memory ringtones folder and that STILL didn't work?
That's bizarre man...
You probably already tried this, but did you try putting them in /sd/media/ringtones or /sd/ringtones? That's where I have mine with no issues on any phones I've had.

Yeah I was so excited cause I thought rooting would be the solution. Before I rooted I moved them to both of the places you mentioned. I've allowed zedge to set the ringtones and it didn't work. I think I tried another app that created a new ringtones folder, but that didn't work either. I have no clue what the problem is, but I've pretty much given up and decided to live with the randomness for now. I mean I don't see any other solutions. How the phone can get confused about which ringtone to play when I've moved it to the actual /system ringtones folder inside the phone memory is beyond me. It doesn't even have to access the sd card or do a media scan. Oh well.

Absolutely perplexing problems since 5.1.1 update. (Verizon SM-P605v)

Device is locked and never been rooted. Took the 5.1.1 update and apps like Netflix and HBO GO fail unerringly after 1-5 minutes of streaming.
Somethings...
-Neither app actually crashes to the desktop. It crashes to the apps main menu.
-Both apps attempt to "redraw" (3-4 times in quick succession) after the player fails, then I can usually reload the video.
I have...
-Cleared data/cache
-uninstall/reinstall the apps
-did a full factory reset
ANY thoughts would be really appreciated. Not having much like finding any resolution here. Thx in advance
I have the same problem. I have flashed the latest firmware with Kies and Odin to make sure there were not issues and still Netflix stops playing as does Youtube, Plex etc...
I have spent around 8 hours trying to find a fix to no avail. I made sure that Display > Smart screen options were disabled. In developer options I checked Force GPU rendering and Turn off hardware overlays. I also tried and unending list of other settings to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks Chris

Go in to About Device in Settings. Does your status show "custom?" If it does, remove your SD card and transfer the files on it to your PC. Reformat the card on your Note and afterwards put the files back on it. There's a strange SD card glitch that occasionally causes the system status to show custom when it's not.

No my Device Status is Official. I tried using a different launcher "Google Now" hoping that a more simple launcher might clear things up but no luck. Netflix stops playing after a couple of minutes and youtube pauses. I want to be clear Netflix does not crash it just goes back to the menu where I can hit play again.
This fixed my tablet!
I may have found a fix. At least this fixed the issue for me.
The Back Story: (for you to compare similarities in device errors)
I have been having the same which started after the update. and my tablet has never been rooted either. I chatted with Samsung several times. They acted like this has never happened before and they kept saying it might be a bad wifi antenna. Which sounded like BS since I was able to surf the web and even watch youtube through chrome no problem. If I tried to watch videos on youtube, netflix, vudu it would reset as you mentioned. I even noticed that when I was using Polaris word it would erase everthying I had written randonmly. Samsung also tried to say it could be the app itself. Which I instantly doubted since the apps are made by different companies. I did the factory reset. I even took the tablet to Best Buy to have them do a system re-flash with no luck. I almost sent the tablet to samsung to have them try to fix it, but I had a feeling it was something easy to fix and I could save myself money.
THE FIX:........ I have no clue why this worked. If anyone knows why it worked I sure wouldn't mind hearing your thought!
1. Pop the sim card out.
2. Try playing videos on your apps. (Be sure to check a couple apps) It worked like a charm for me. I dont think I had to reboot to get it to work, but the fix stays after a reboot.
3. What you do not want to do is put the sim card back in because you will have the issue again.
- If you do put the card back in dont worry. You can simply remove it again and it will work again.
One thing to keep in mind.....I stopped my subscription on my verizon data plan. So it doesn't matter to me if the sim card is in. So If you still use Verizon Data plan and this fix worked then you should contact Verizon and let them know whats going on. Maybe you just need a new Sim Card. Like I said I don't know why it worked, but it did. I had data turned off completely so my device shouldn't have been trying to use anything other than wifi.
Please let me know if this works for you as well!
Thanks are always welcome!

It Worked!!!
Thanks very much for the suggestion. As it turns out the tablet came to me with a sim card in it. I never intended on using it with Verizon so I did not look. Once I removed the inactive sim card everything worked great.
Thanks again I really appreciate the help.

Getting an OTA update after installing TWRP and rooting OR use RUU?

I have an HTC One E8... I know, it's ancient... But... It's been a good phone until this past year when it really started dragging. Takes forever to do anything. A year ago, the main camera (is that the front or back camera) stopped working (phone doesn't even recognize that it's there -- flash doesn't work either with a flashlight app). Before that, phone dialing using my Bluetooth earpiece stopped working. Maybe related, but the phone doesn't work as a phone (holding it to your ear). If I'm not using the Bluetooth earpiece, it will only work on Speaker-phone mode (voice command apps such as Google Assistant and song recognition apps like Sound Hound don't 'hear' anything). Lastly, the Bluetooth has been disconnecting for no apparent reason. My earpiece will say 'Phone 1 disconnected', but when I look at the Bluetooth icon on the phone, it still thinks it's connected. Tapping the icon to turn off Bluetooth and then tapping again 'fixes' the problem and it connects again. It's just annoying when it does this in the middle of a conversation (and because, when it happens, the other party doesn't hear me yelling at them to wait because my Bluetooth disconnected because the phone doesn't know that anything is wrong). I had read ones that the Bluetooth drivers for this phone were sketchy. It's strange, though, this this problem has really gotten worse over the past couple of months without me making any changes to the phone. Lastly, the battery has really gone downhill. The phone will unexpectedly shut off around 30% battery. (I even tried the HTC battery recalibration technique -- no joy.) I chalked all of this up (except for the battery issue) to software. I thought maybe a good ol' factory reset (wipe) would fix the issues. For years (literally) it's been nagging me about a system update (Android 6.0). I never did it because the phone was already running slow and it's always screaming about being out of storage space. It hovers around 500MB free most of the time. I don't have that much installed on it. Any apps that will allow it, have been moved to the SD card.
That's the back-story to give you some insight as to what's going on with the phone. I included all of that 'other' stuff (camera and voice dialing issues) in case someone has seen them before and can offer any suggestions there.
So here's where I'm at. I decided to try to do a factory reset to 'refresh' the OS (remove all the patches and updates) and start over. Afterwards, I wanted to run Link2SD with a 64GB SD card so I wouldn't have the space limitations that I'm experiencing now after all of the apps have updated. The other night, after backing up the internal memory and the SD card, I started the process. (BTW, I have another SD card that I'm going to use that I've already partitioned per the Link2SD instructions.) After much trial and error, dead download links, incompatible versions of adb.exe and fastboot.exe I finally managed to get TWRP recovery installed. Then there was the issue of getting a working SuperSU installed. Finally did that. The phone booted and started walking me through the process of setting up my Google account. Everything seemed to go well. The phone was just as speedy as the day I got it. I was even able to restore my 15000 text messages and it was still zippy. It was wonderful! Unfortunately, the camera still doesn't work. Seems like voice dialing isn't working at the moment either. The Bluetooth issue seems to have gone away. Since the camera still isn't working, it looks like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and get a new phone. This one will just become a 'toy' or a temporary backup phone in the event something tragic happens to the new phone. I'll just use this one on Wi-Fi only to check the weather and maybe play some games (which I had pretty much stopped doing because it was so slow and always out of storage). I would also use it as my portable media device for listening to downloaded podcasts and music while I'm running or riding my bike. It could also (maybe without mobile data) track my runs and rides, etc. As long as it doesn't get slow like it was before, I think it'll do just fine in its re-purposed life. (It was so slow I could barely play music from Google Music and have Google Fit tracking my run at the same time. It would take forever to switch screens!)
Ah, what's this?! Oh, there's that software update again. I guess I'll go ahead and do it before I start setting up a bunch of apps and tweaking the phone to my preferences. Nope! It downloads the OTA update into the Downloads folder and starts the process, but when it reboots, it reboots in Recovery mode into TWRP. I'm now finding that you can't easily do an OTA update after you've rooted your phone and put a custom recovery on it. I've seen lengthy instructions on how to put get a stock recovery.img out of the OTA zip file in the Downloads folder. I've moved it to my PC and pulled the firmware.zip file out. When I try to open the firmware.zip file to get to the recovery.img file, Windows is saying it's corrupted. I also see something about using an RUU.exe or RUU.zip file to restore the phone to stock. I've downloaded the correct RUU .exe file for my Sprint e8 in case I decide to go that route.
Here's my question... I know, finally! Since I don't have really anything on this phone since I did the reset and root, would it just be simpler to use the RUU method to blow it away and start over instead of trying to resolve the corrupt firmware.zip file issue and all of the other steps that follow? That's question #1. Question #2 is this... Will this RUU that I downloaded actually take the phone straight to Marshmallow before it starts walking me through setting up my Google account? If so, that's great! I'm all for the ease of that. I noticed that OTA download was about 250MB, while the RUU download is 1.5GB. Why such a difference? Is it because the RUU is the full-blown deal and not just the patches? I'm fine doing the RUU and then reinstalling and rooting the phone afterwards if that'll work. I still have all the files that I previously downloaded.
Sorry for the novel, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible to eliminate the back and forth "Did you try this?" "Did you try that?" However, if there is anything that I left out that would help with your answer/advice, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give a noob.
