just a quick question, do you have to wipe your phone (alt+w) everytime theres a new rom update? for example if going from JF ADP 1.5 to JF ADP 1.6, do you need to wipe phone before applying the 1.6 update? or is it only necessary to wipe if your going from different roms for example JF to Haykuro..etc..etc
thanks
anyone have an answer to my question?
I'm curious as well. The impression is that you do not as long as you've wiped when you originally rooted.
I'm sure the safe answer is yes, you should wipe but that's a pain in the a**.
You should wipe IMO.
If you don't wipe and run into esoteric issues most likely you will be asked to do so anyways as it is the only useful troubleshooting tool most of these people have because
1.They don't know any better (no ones fault)
2.They don't have time take a look at your debug logs and then instruct you through some most likely intermediate-advanced commands to fix the issue.
Say you moved into an apartment and it's filled with the last occupants stuff. There's a blood stained sofa, stacks of magazine around the WHOLE apartment and a dirty toothbrush. Are you going to be comfortable sitting on that sofa? Would those magazines get annoying? Would you brush your teeth with the dirty toothbrush?
If you have to walk 10 miles, do you wear your own shoes or the last runner's leather shoes that are two sizes too small? If you can even get the shoes on you, you're gonna be in pain and give up within the first mile.
^_^
My answer is: Always wipe. Let the new OS use his own shoes.
ok i understand where you guys are coming from, but what if its only a small update to say JF ADP 1.6, and you are on JF ADP 1.5, it wouldn't make sense to do a wipe just for a small update. am i wrong here. now if ur going from JF to Haykuro then a wipe is definitely necessary. I read somewhere before, that mentioned you didn't have to wipe if you were staying within the same rom. i guess i just need a better understanding on this.

hahaha! ok so I guess I will wipe before applying any new updates. what about the JFupdater app, it says it applys any updates, i dont believe the app wipes your phone before applying it, so is it best not to use the jfupdater when flashing an update?

My suggestion is generally this: Try it without a wipe. If it works, then great, you keep all your stuff the way you had it. If you run into issues that seem blaringly obvious(home process crashing, many force closes, boot looping, etc) then go back to the recovery image and do a wipe. There aren't any problems I know of caused by not wiping that can't be solved by going back and doing it after the fact.

thanks! thats exactly what i was thinking but wanted to be sure.
now wiping wouldn't mess up any links to the sd card(apps2sd) correct? wiping basically justs wipes the data from the phone....i guess what i mean is would I have to set up apps2sd again?
i'm with marcus, if you can get away with not wiping great, if not oh well wipe. or you could perform a nandroid bakup and then wipe, then after the update just fastboot flash your data.img

You would only need to restore the symlinks (if that's the method you were using).
Hey guys, this is my first time posting here after being a lurker for some time now. Got to say I love the NS, I'm coming from an iphone 3G. Had my phone since christmas. Of course I'm rooted, and I'm running NSCollab's ROM.
I decided to sign up because I have questions for him, but seeing how i cant post in the developer section yet, I need to rack up my 10 posts.
Now I'll probably transfer my question there if its not answered here, but here it goes.
So in his ROM which was running a RC2 and Netarchy's kernel 1.2.8, i had really long boot times. I saw that this was a problem with the kernel as some people mentioned in the thread. Then the ROM was upgraded to nightly #22 I believe with Netarchy's Kernel 1.3.0 which was supposedly suppose to rid of these boot times. I flashed the ROM, and the boot time was still very long. Now for his ROM i dont need to do a factory reset, but after i saw that i still had a very long boot time, I did that to see if it would work. I wiped cache and did a factory reset. THen flashed the ROM again. Same thing. Other people on that thread are reporting normal boot ups now.
Now there's another update thats running CM nightly #25 i believe with the same kernel, and he also added the dark launcher theme and dark camera theme. I do have that the dark camera theme, but the dark launcher theme isnt there, my launcher is still the normal color. Which I would probably prefer anyways.
Point is, why is my phone still have the long boot times, when its clearly been fixed for others? Sorry for the long explanation ahah
That long delay bug was introduced with kernel 1.2.9 (I think) & fixed in 1.3.0 since I have been moving from stable 1.2.5 to all of its successor to the eventual 1.3.0. If my conviction is correct, you shouldn't be seeing any boot time difference from 1.2.8 to 1.3.0 since you missed a hop in between. You may want to try wiping the cache, dalvik cache and battery stats by booting into recovery while you are on the same kernel.
really? Because I dont think GBcollab ever had 1.2.9 kernel on his ROM he went straight to 1.3.0. I'll try it doing what you said.
And is there an option for wiping battery stats in clockwork recovery? I've never seen that before. Also where do you wipe dalvik cache, i only see wipe cache in clockwork never dalvik cache.

The option to wipe battery stats is in the Advanced menu.
Even my boot times are very high. We are in the same boat Not its insanely long. Requires forever to boot up

I think i've seen you NS Collab's thread also, at least someone with your avatar.
Do you have the most recent version? I dont even have the dark launcher and dark camera theme. I dunno why I'm missing that.
Yep. I am there also
haha i just need my 10 posts to get there! Stupid rule haha
yay no i can ask!
Hey Guys,
So I just rooted my Thunderbolt the other day with Cyanogen 7 Mod version 7.0.0. Today a new update came out (version 7.0.1) and I was trying to figure out if I needed to wipe my data and cache in order to update to this version. Hopefully someone has the answer. I am new to android and am looking for advice. Thanks in advance!
Wipe data
Wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache in the advanced portion of CWR
then install the ROM
Do all three at least 3 times just to be sure.
Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Anytime you install a new ROM follow this. If a small modification like new market, pull down menu. just wipe cache
Hopes this helps

Lol, reminded me of the website is down vid....did you reboot? Yea man I rebooted three times, I always reboot three times like you told me!
-sent via 1.21 giggawatts of android.
wipe 3 times? excessive much? once is sufficient and additional wipes wont do anything more.

+1 to wiping just once.
Also, OP, keep in mind CM7 for TB is pre-alpha and does have bugs. If you're looking for a daily driver, since you're new to Android, perhaps you would want to try a more stable ROM to get your feet wet, and once you get the hang of things, perhaps trying CM7 or a leaked ROM.
Good luck!
Wipe 3 times Anal retentive much? ...haha anyway
Wipes of caches sure but ....
Flashing CM7 7.0.1 over 7.0.0 there is no need for data wipe .
If an issue does arise you can wipe it after but why reinstall all your apps really?
This has been my daily driver
No 4G here yet & I use do not use wifi regularly.
are there still issues with CM7 not being able to use phone information (EPST) or ##778# to manage / edit modem settings?
i think i'm stuck on 3g...
there's an app called network that lets you pick which radio you want to use..I used it to switch from 3g/4g to 3g only...it has 4g only.
I always wipe 2-3 times ever since the OG Droid days. It takes you 30 more seconds, whats the big deal. If it somehow bricks because the wipe wasn't successful or you have to reflash a rom it will take you another 10-20 minutes.
Better be safe than sorry.
I've followed the steps outlined in the following thread but i can't get data to stick. It frequently drops even the 3G connectivity.
Also noticed that bluetooth isn't workinig.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13881413&postcount=2616
Any tips on what I can try to get data to stick.
So i have a problem. As soon as a new ROM comes out I'm flashing it!! Even if I'm happy with my current setup, I'm trying whatever is new.
My question is this; is doing a factory wipe along with wiping caches enough. At some point would it be a good idea to restore to stock, re-root and flash.
Wanted to see what you all thought.
Gotta go, flashing a new ROM now.

Factory wipe and caches is good enough. On my last phone (evo 4g...miss that sucker) I went 2 years flashing a new rom every week and never had a problem.
Had a bit of trouble trying to do this last night, which resulted in a few hours lost sleep. I went formatting everything in CWM and realized after the fact, I also formatted the internal SD card. Luckily ADB worked in transferring the zip (learn something new every day).
Anyway, after all said and done, all my apps were still on the phone. This is after formatting and new ROM...
How can I truly start from scratch to make sure this new ROM is 100% fresh and free of any unnecessary apps from previous ROMs?
Also, what would be the best current radio and link to said radio?
TIA
EDIT: I had just realized the issue with Factory Reset/Wipe Data. This one I had forgot to mention as I could never use it as all options said no and the menu was not scrollable. Just decided to try and use the volume buttons and sure enough there was more to scoll to.
That said, would the following be a proper procedure to follow;
Wipe Data/Factory reset
Wipe Cache
Format: System, Data, Cache, Boot
Wipe: Dalvik then Fix Permissions
Install order: Rom first, Gapps second, Kernel last
Reboot
???

The method I follow is
1. Wipe Data/Factory Reset (this takes away all your downloaded apps?
2. Wipe system/cache/dalvik (this wipes everything else)
3. Flash ROM, Gapps, Kernel
The thing with android is, even if there are some files left over from the previous ROM, they'll get overwritten with the ones from my new ROM, taking them away regardless. The reason you wipe everything to make sure there aren't any files that won't get overwritten. So basically, wipe everything and flash, and you'll have a fresh new ROM also you don't need to fix permissions after you wipe everything because they'll be no permissions to fix! Lol

I don't know it offhand but its probably somewhere on the development forums. I just noticed I said "my new rom" in my original post, I meant "the new rom" just in case you were a little confused (probably not but that would've annoyed me if I didn't address it)
