what method did you use to root. Also check under the applications in the main phone menu and check unknown sources.

I used the one click method. I tested to make sure im rooted and I am. I dont have an option for unknown sorces though.

then it doesnt come with sideloading enabled there are some commands using adb and some other stuff to enable side loading

well if this is the case I would either flash att1 stock rooted or any DHD rom. Or download the side loading wonder machine to side load your apps.

Baffled, newb

so i recently used superoneclick to root my phone. The program said my phone is rooted yet when my kernels etc are the same as stock. I have superuser on my phone but how do i change the kernels etc so that i can use non market apps like wireless tether?
Kernels can be changed with new ROMS. Rooting means you get superuser permission on the terminals so things can be changed.
i dont understand what you asking about non market apps? But you can use apps that required root.
Hope i helped.

thanks, sorry let me clarify.
I downloaded wireless tether and titanium backup to remove sprint ID. The issue is when i try to run either, they dont work. Wireless says the kernel is the issue. What else should I do to be able to use these apps?

Try barnacle(it's in the market) for wifi tether and you need to download and install busybox in order to use titanium backup, and be careful what you remove because you could brick your phone...

Thank you for the barnacle thing, i havn't removed anything im having issues using anything that requires root access, just unrooted my phone.
Can anyone give me a step by step to rooting it? I simply want to remove sprint ID and have my phone run faster. Cant think of any apps i would really need.
Download z4root here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=446145&d=1290341328 transfer it to your sdcard and use a file manager to open it(if you don't have one download astro) install and run it, choose permanent root, and let it do it's thing...
did that, still isnt working, thank you though.
it appears anytime i try to run an app it says something along the lines of not having root access, even though it is rooted
Weird. Hmmmm. I meant i dont know much about your phone. I know that when my root got effed, i just did a factory reset and re-rooted and it worked.
Sorry couldnt help
have you tried this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shkOp2Q2AM4 ?

going to try this now, just didnt want to since it seems a bit more complicated and im really weak when it comes to linux
You could try installing Rom Manager from the market. If it works you will be able to flash a custom recovery, backup your device and flash a custom ROM.
Give it a go and let us know if it works.
cool so i followed the video, then it wasnt rooted, so i used z4root apparently it took two things to fully root my phone. Not sure why, some sort of sprint failsafe?
Although i forgot to set a backup to sprint features, so im a bit screwed down the road.
You prolly can find a sprint ROM somewhere. Or you could do a factory reset, not sure of that will bring back the sprint apps. Dont they have the sprint apps on the Android market?

That would be my video. AND no, you are NOT rooted if you flashed that tar. All that tar does, is make your phone STOCK with custom recovery, to ensure a nice clean platform to work with. You would hold down volume down, voice button, and power. let go when you see samsung, and then apply an update.zip for the kernel. i do have a video on how to root the Android 2.2.2 and it's a proper root video. Sorry for the confusion.

[Q] Rooting Photon Q LOST and CONFUSED

Hi, I am new to this and decided I need to root my Photon so I can use it as a WIFI hotspot for my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet. I have read so much I am totally lost and confused. I have tried pdanet foxfi(which did work with my laptop but that is now unusable) and such but I can only browse web on my tablet and nothing else. Every app says check internet conection or wifi connection. I need to be able to use apps that require wifi such as team viewer. Please help. I don't know the first thing about this.
I have sprint (regrettably stuck for 2 years now) but love my photon. If someone can post a link with like 1 2 3 type steps it would be fantastic. I know zilch and the more I read the less I know like minus zilch lol. I find using my tablet is so much easier too read that I would rather use it if I can for internet stuff versus my phone.
Thank you.
Is your device rooted and the bootloader unlocked?
Have you considered CyanogenMod or another custom ROM? Tethering works out of the box on most of those.
When I was on the stock ROM (before CM was on the device...) I used a wifi tether app from the Play Store, but you did have to be rooted to use it.

Haven't considered anything yet, am just learning bout this. Phone is standard, no unlocking or anything. I am just leaning terms also. I don't know how to unlock or root. So neither are done. Have no idea about ROMs yet. As I said, am just starting so forgive me for being ignorant of these things at this time.

No worries.
I think there's still a way to root without unlocking - but here's the jist.
Unlocking allows you to do anything - custom recovery, custom ROM, whatever you please. Rooting only allows apps on your device root access - so you still have stock recovery, stock ROM.

Thank you. I see the difference now. I wouldn't mind both then. I just hope I don't brick it. I believe that means I don't want to make it into a paperweight.

lol, yes. Unlocking is pretty simple, just make sure you are getting the code correct - has to match exactly!
The only downside is the official warranty is voided - but if you have insurance with your provider, they should still honor it. Just the manufacturer warranty is voided.

I get off work in a few hours and after some sleep will go try that link up above. Desktop running xp. Have never connected photon to PC yet. Hopefully will go smoothly.
You should be fine running XP. The instructions from Windows 7 should be the same and if not they should be similar enough that you know what to do. I put the disclaimer in there because I don't like saying "this is how you do this" without having tested it first hand.
I installed the drivers and SDK now onto the rest hopefully tomorrow as I didn't want to start with only a few minutes left before I had to come to work.

I have the files downloaded and installed. My says there is a problem with my device. I am trying to go to explorer so I can copy files to my desktop so I don't lose them but I can't get it to show up in my list of drives.
I have to work til 6pm or so therefore I won't be able to try anything til I get home. I remember the last Motorola I had also (Droid 3), I could never "sync" to my pc as my pc wouldn't recognize it to let me view files. Can anyone tell me what I am missing? I will reconnect my phone tonite and get the exact messages that the pc are telling me when I connect my phone. Thank you
Still can't get PC to recognize phone.

Different cable? Different port? Different PC?
Are you sure the drivers are installed? Does the PC make a sound when you plug it in, indicating that it recognized *something* being plugged in?
How does it show up in device manager?
Please give us as much detail as you possibly can. What you've tried, etc.
Also, if you have debugging on turn it off, or if it's off, turn it on.

Amazon Local Register Secure Card Reader

Amazon released their own version of a secure credit card swiper recently but they only support a few devices like the Samsung S3 and S4 and S5... I get the message This app is not supported on this device when I try to run the app. Any way to get this thing to work? I tried build.prop editing to make the model of the phone an S5 but it still didn't work, perhaps I did it wrong or overlooked a setting?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
maybe someone with know how can find the compatible device checker in the apk smali and take it out and recompile?
So I found that this app works with RUU 5.18 but when I'm using CM11 it says device isn't compatible and won't run.. Any ideas??

this is interesting - quite interested in this myself ! Have you tried with CM10 ? maybe it is restricted to non-root devices... can you try with RUU+root. My bet is that it will fail.

I haven't had time to try ruu with root but I was thinking it was something missing in the CM kernel for the device used to read the cards.. Like if the app doesn't see the right driver loaded it won't run or something..
I'm trying to get this work as well on my S4 and getting same message as yours. I believe is the root detection from the app that causing this, need to find a way to bypass root detection.

I just used rootcloak with cydia and it still says unsupported device on CM11
so.. confirmed; runs on the RUU 5.18 stock, but when I root the RUU 5.18 it says device not supported...
edit: they released a new version of the app yesterday apparently.. the screen no longer says device not supported.. instead it says ALR has detected this device is rooted or jailbroken which is a security risk, ALR is not supported on rooted phones.
so i tried to run rootcloak with xposed and the app force closes ;\
why oh why!!!
we need a dev! using rootcloak with cydia and xposed both yield no results, using hide my root from the playstore also does nothing... need someone to decompile the apk and remove the root check smali and recompile! donates available to whoever is in the know and willing to spend the time!

Cant update unrooted device

I removed root via SU, ran root checker to confirm, but I still cannot get OTA updates, get message saying "this device is suspected in rooting"
I can't unroot it any more than I have..
my main reason is the GPS, my phone has the poorest performing GPS of any phone I have had going back to my Google G1, gps will not lock while in a vehicle, cannot use google maps or any other nav.
Im hoping the update will fix it, failing that I will have to send it in for replacement, either way I need it fully unrooted.
Any ideas?

As far as I can tell, a PC is the only way. Make sure you find one with a USB 2.0 port.
Not an option, at all.

Yes that links appears to be the most up to date for you device..
And as far as deblaoting goes, you can either use ADB commands or a bash script
I find using ADB commands by itself works better for me because I know what I am removing

Go to the Google play store and download an app called apk inspector. It will show you all user apps and system apps in the "com.candycrush.king" ( for example ) format. You can then browse through and see what you want to get rid of

I don't think it matters tbh. If that guide doesn't mention taking out the sim before pushing the adb command, I wouldn't worry about it. I have a samsung device thats rooted and I didn't remove my sim before I rooted
