[Q] home button to unlock - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have a LG Optimus 7 and I love it but one thing i find very anonying is pressing that small lock button on the top to unlock the device... and im just wondering are all WP7's only unlockable through the lock button or does the home button work aswell?
Oh and what do you guys think the minimum requirements for hardware will be for the next gen windows phone?

My Omnia 7 will wake via a press to the Home button. From that point, you still need to slide up the screen (And input the PIN if required)
Is that what you mean?

Sort of, I know you have to slide up/enter pin I just wondering if you can wake it up using the home button which your phone can... I just find it very annoying that the optimus 7 can only be woken up using the lock button which is VERY small and placed in very uncomfortable place

I also have a LG Optimus 7 and was looking to wake via the home button. I'm slowly getting used to using the tiny tiny top button but it would make things so simple by using the home button. Any help would be great.

On a related note, if i have something near the proximity sensor (such as my hand) then the Home button will not wake the device. I suspect this is so the device is not woken up while its in my pocket
This is not causing you issues is it? I just find it strange that a feature like this would be related to the hardware, and not the OS's standard action

nope, theres nothing near the proximity sensor... are you using an LG optimus 7 device? I just think its stupid designing to make the home button not wake up the device it drives me nuts.

AFAIK the only devices supporting this are the Samsung ones.
I would contact your OEM (i.e. LG) and ask them to enable this in a future ROM release. It definitely makes a huge difference trying to operate the device in complete darkness.

It's not so much darkness that's the problem but but button location and size that is the problem. As well built as the LG Optimus is, it just is missing some really big key features, like LED notifications and the wake button being where it is.

I guess it's because of the capacitive nature of the buttons. They're switched off when the phone is in standby (to save battery/inadvertent touches?).
Only devices with hardware keys will get the Windows button to unlock feature enabled.

The Optimus 7 only has hardware keys.

I don't have one, but every review I saw said they were capacative... of course, they could be wrong, but that was what I was basing my comment on.

Ah my bad. The "LG C900 Optimus 7Q" has capacitive touch controls while the "LG E900 Optimus 7" has hard controls. Most people have the "LG E900 Optimus 7". When I refer to the Optimus 7, I am talking about the E900 not the Optimus 7Q.

LG E900 is known as LG Optimus 7; LG C900 is known as LG Quantum.
I am guessing that since all the other WP7 phones have capacitive buttons, it is mandated to use the power button to wake up the device.

I may be wrong on this but isn't the Quantum under the model C900k? Could anyone correct me on this?
EDIT: I looked into it and the LG C900 Optimus 7Q is the exact same as the LG C900k Quantum. So my bad. Got a little too technical there.

Apart from the fact that the Omnia7 wakes up using the home button I'm guessing it's just something other OEMs haven't yet considered.

Even so Omnis has power button on the side. So its more acceptable to reach barely use homebutton

Didn't I see something about some registry keys related to hardware functions? Wonder if it's simply a case of finding the key on the Samsung and copying that over?
Personally, I'd pay money to have the home button turn the phone on.

Anybody get this working?

I dont knw if its possible

Hi
I am having the HTC P3470 ..
I had been to a nearby mall the other day and was as having a look at some of the new line up from HTC phones.
I was really impressed with the new beauties but i was wondering if i could had one feature of these new phones (dont knw how to explain)on our phones particularly old ones.
Generally when my pharos is on the stand by mode and I press the power button the screen will not show fully immediately the first ,the screen kind of blinks(then to display the wallpaper) and then its fully functional.Although it not takes more than a sec but i was really impressed the way it is in the new gen of HTC phones ..it is really smooth like we have in the NOkia phones..first the back light starts a bit dim than will fully display the menu
I dont knw if it is possible to have such smooth transitions when I push the Power button on my phone or for that matter any older phones.

Hi,
Guess that depends largely on the drivers that are builtin. and on what kind of screen you have.

Humm...I am sure that these drivers cannot be replaced right
or there is any other option

Anyone finding their power button mashed down?

I've had my One S since it's come out, always keep in a case and I've noticed it's been harder and harder to push the power button down to wake it up.
I see Expansys has a replacement sim cover here http://www.expansys-usa.com/htc-one..._productfeed&gclid=COvFrtXItbACFUMCQAodJx8-7g
This should include the power button mechanism but I'm not sure if I'm ready to spend $20.
And I certainly don't want to go through the hassle of a replacement from TMO.
Anyone else having issues? Are there possible solutions?
I dont know if there are any solutions, but I notice a difference too from when i first got it to now.
I had the same problem occur to me on the HTC Sensation.
Might just be wear and tear from how much you keep on pressing the button. A solution to slow down this 'wear and tear' would be to unlock the phone by means of the softkeys or volumekeys.
Just to add gas to the starting flame: the Nexus 1 had massive widespread power button failures...
how do you unlock from the volumerocker or soft keys?

The Sensation had a feature in some custom ROMs called Swipe-to-unlock, basically you swipe your finger across the softkeys and the screen turns on. Swipe the other way to turn it off.
But I'm not sure if this is also on One S ROMs
i had to exchange 4 of them for various reasons and only my last unit has a perfect power button that still works as new. but it would be great to have swipe-to-unlock just because how tall this phone is.

Yep, Swipe-to-Unlock is a great option! Hope to get it for our One S soon, and as sources are released, we'll probably get this option with some custom Kernels or additions...
Don't know if a "soft" solution is really good, but it will eat some battery for sure as the system is "waiting to be touched" and not really sleeping as it should be. Some has huge drain, some not... But I didn't test all these options, and not sure that they work with our phone.
Another popular solution for the sensation was using the Volume + button hack to wake the device.
I never had that issue with my sensation and after one month with the ONE S my power button still works fine.
(On his sensation) A friend of mine placed a small piece of paper under the power button to raise it and it seemed to work for him, maybe you can try something similar?

[Q] Has anyone replaced the lock button before?

My lock button is getting rather iffy and hard to press, I was wondering if anyone here has either swapped it out for a new one or if just opening and cleaning it would help.
Also I'm extremely familiar with working on cellphones just I have no idea if I'd have to find another phone to try and salvage a piece from since I haven't worked on an Optimus 3d yet.

I don't know about replacement/cleaning the button, but you should save it while you can.
For example, I use this app Turn Off The Screen to turn off and lock the screen. It's extremely light and simple.
Also, in the new firmwares (v30a and v30b) you can use the volume_down button to unlock.
Hadn't noticed that, I thought it was only available on CM based ROMs.
Thanks for telling me this.
Use TapTap app. Its great. It uses your proximity sensor to turn on screen. You can set it it up to how many times to tap on the proximity sensor. I saw a lot og peopple is complaining about the power-off button these months. Almost if it was programed to last around 18months. I didn't replace mine with a proper one. I soldered a button from an old nokia to the pcb. If anyone here from Serbia who has the same problem, please contact me so we could order together a power button flex cable together.

I tried that but in another phone . But generally it's cheap and just disconnect socket (I'm not sure about the word spell) then connect the new button with that socket ,, see youtube there is a complete video (of optimus 3D) on how to take it a parts .

Power Button won't wake up screen sometimes.

Hello!
After locking the phone, it happens that sometimes the power button won't turn on the display.
The button is still working, because it is possible to start the Flashlight (long press power button) or open the camera app (double tap power button, can hear the sound).
I'm using the latest lineageos 14.1 version.
Does anybody how to fix this?

As ridiculous as that may sound i think it's a problem with your button, you will have to desolder this and resolder a new one. I used to have the same problem, button didn't work like 2/10 at first, and that rate kept increasing. With use and tear it kept worsening. I bought soldering iron and replaced the button, it now works freakin' great.

Okay that sounds strange. I can give it a try.
Now that i see this Thread again, it's far more likely that your lcd just died or partially did. Although if it turns on sometimes like your state, "that sometimes the power button won't turn on the display" it may be a bad teared down soldering on either the power button on the lcd pcb. Get it to a repair shop and ask for a check, if you don't mine you cant open your back cover and remove the screws so you let the motherboard pcb exposed, with a high quality picture we should be able to see if the power button is the problem or not.

I'm using a cheap replacement from ebay that I replaced myself, and I'm yet to see any issues with it.
most lcd have the problem. i got a lcd thrice now from different manufacturers had the same problem for some extent
digitizer works fine but lcd doesn't have good connection
My Nexus was also sometimes not waking with the power button. A custom ROM flash (Nexus4Ever) worked well, but still had the same problem. Probably related to this I would notice that when the phone did wake it was sometimes taking a few seconds to do it.
After some searching I found a solution under the lineageos forums -- search for BUGBASH-230 (can't post url here because this is a guest reply). Basically, you have to copy (copy them, don't move them) all tzapps files found in system/etc to system/vendor. It worked for me. There's no more delay in waking up and the problem has been gone for a week now. Before the fix it was occurring at least once a day. Try it.
I have same problem with you and this occcurd after change os nougat to Oreo 8.1 on my j7 prime
It's not the display
I have the same issue on my Nexus 7 with 14.1 installed. The mockingbird replies about it being a faulty display or power button are unfounded considering rebooting the device fixes the issue. Only seems to occur when it's been on for a while or has less than 30% battery.
Did anyone ever fix this? I see this on a few versions of Lineage. Disabling the lock screen in System Profiles settings avoids the issue, but then there's no lock screen!
Not The Display, exactly...
Just thought I would throw in my 2 cent observations. I have a Samsung Relay 4G (t699/apexqtmo). It worked flawlessly with its stock software / and official upgrade (I.C.S. & J.B). Once I upgraded to KitKat or Lollipop, the screen backlight would never turn on after waking the device on a single button push. The difference between these versions of android as it relates to waking the device can be found in changes to power management / wake locks code. I am not good enough to figure the ins and outs of this type of programming, but maybe this will give some hacker an idea of how to patch or work around this particular part of the firmware. Thanks!
Just upgraded form stock to LineageOS rooted and all....display wake up worked fine b 4 now i have this problem also it will sometimes eventually wake up but takes forever and many button presses
So, if anyone is till wondering about this, here is the information i believe to fix this bug, that is if anyone can integrate the change into CM KitKat and beyond for our sad old Relay. github.com/TeamApexQ/apexq/issues/24. Any chance this could be implemented through an apk?
Because I really don't want to shell out $$$ for an F(x)tec Pro

Haptic Buttons

Reviews are really bad with the sensitivity of the haptic buttons for volume control and on/off. Some people have said an update with better accuracy is required. This is a deal breaker for me and I have owned almost every phone since HTC started. Currently I own the u11+. Please give you reviews here after you have spent some time with the phone and possibly tweaked any possible settings to make your experience better. Thank you.
No issues for me. They seem to work as expected, though I rarely use the buttons. I am failing to understand why the reviewers are making such a big deal of this. Mkbhd's review seems spot on to me...
I'm playing around since a week with my U12. Can't find a sensitivity of the buttons that fits my needs...
My index finger touches the On/off button every second time I use the phone...don't know why they installed the button so deep...(or my hand is to big )
When I'm in the YouTube App or PubG in Landscape mode, the volume and power buttons doesn't work...
I'm a realy fan of HTC and owned all HTC flagships since the diamond...but that buttons drives me crazy!!!
Hope for an update
So far, I have no issues with the buttons. I went into it know that they weren't real buttons and didn't expect them to act as such.
No issues with the buttons for me either.
Here also no issues.
Grtz
Everything working as expected on my end as well. No issues at all.

I have just one issue with them, that sometimes they react if I touch the phone without even touching the buttons. For example I grab my phone (on the lower part) and suddenly my volume is all the way down.
Also if you have edge sense enabled, and you just pick up the phone you sometimes have the blue dots (to indicate that you're "pressing" the phone) visible - without actually pressing it. The dots go away shortly after you do something on the phone .... as if they calibrate itself or sth.
I have u12 plus for 12 days. For my use the haptics buttons are a real disgusting. In particular the power button. An involuntary light pressure is enough to turn off the display. Really unnerving. Every day makes me curse this thing. I'm waiting for an update, if htc does not fix these buttons, I'll sell the phone absolutely. Unfortunately, if htc fails it will only be because of him and of these useless experiments.

I have the same issue with my buttons, I'll be holding the phone below the power button and it will trigger the screen on or off. Also I noticed sometimes depending how i'm holding the phone I can't get the power button to react. This is my biggest complaint about the phone other than the software being the exact same since the HTC 10.
I don't have any issues with these buttons. Everything works fine for me. I'm already used to it after playing with the device for 3 hours.

Today i've received mine U12+ and I don't really understand why reviews complain about those buttons. They are fine really, when I press I fell haptic feedback. They are neither too easy or too hard to press, for me they are fine =)
I STILL have no issues with the buttons. I don't really use the power button to turn the screen on. I use the fingerprint sensor or a swipe. Volume button works great for me.
I've bumped the power button while using the phone, sure. Not exactly an issue to rage over for me.
My only confusion is that the button presses feel like a linear actuator (Taptic Engine), but the rest of the system's haptic feed back feels like a normal spinning weighted motor.
Hi, i have also Problems with the volume Buttons. They working like charme. But they dont working right in landscape Mode if there is any contact with my Fingers/hand on the display. I think the Buttons are being ignored if the "3 Finger gestures" is on limit.. Can anyone proof this?

Just tried to go in landscape mode, put my thumb on the screen and tried to change the volume buttons up/down and turn the screen off with power button. The buttons didn't recognise the presstouch here either. Don't think that's a problem though, but build in to the software.

Nearly every review before the phone was released: The buttons are horrible! Don't buy! Don't buy! The buttons stink! Why did they change them?! They're horrible! This is stupid! Don't buy!!
Nearly everyone who owns the U12+: What the *$% was the fuss about? The buttons work fine! Took me a few hours to get used to it, but I've got no real problems! They work just like regular buttons! Don't "not buy" just because you're afraid the buttons suck!
I mean ... do you think the initial//review devices were REALLY that bad and there was this huuuuuge improvement before the device was released to the public, or people just don't like change, or do they just have ulterior motives?
I get it's an $800 flagship with no headphone jack and rear glass with no wireless charging (but QC4!), but this phone has been EVERYTHING I was hoping it would be -- premium device with no notch, above-average speakers, IP68, sd card, snappy fingerprint scanner, bootloader unlockable and killer cameras. No buyers remorse here!
Well, I really don't get why reviewers are so mad about those buttons. If you wanted this phone because it's a complete package (well... almost, no Qi charging), don't let the button "problem" (at least for reviewers) drive you away. It's a great phone and my only grief is the lack of 3,5mm jack but I knew that it won't be here....
Btw
Usonics are really good
I have the U12+ now for 2 weeks and got used to the buttons. I mean, yes they could be a bit more responsive and i think HTC will fix that with an Update. If not, i am sure someone on XDA will. I really dont understand the bad reviews. No Notch, for real? Like it would make a phone that much better. No 3,5mm? Nothing special these days, get used to it. My battery on averange usage is great. I do watch Netflix, use Whatsapp, listen to Spotify and take here and there some pictures. I get 1,5 - 2 days battery. I am not a huge HTC fanboy but also cant denide that i really like what they did with the HTC 10 and M7. Its something new, wasnt there before and it doesnt mean its that bad, just give it some time to get used to it. Hope they fix some small issues with Android P Update. I would like to set the sensitivity for the buttons in the settings.
Sorry for my english
Everything works well here. Buttons and even the double tap for one hand operation no problem.
