CM7 battery life Troubleshooting thread

I am loving this rom, but also having HORRID battery life, I am literally dropping 10% every 90 minutes with an extended battery.
27% Cell Standbye
26% Bluetooth
19% Display
Now I keep reading that these might be false readings, but I keep reading this as a response to those having **** for battery life... so maybe they are not false?
Anyone having good battery life show readings like this? Those with bad battery life, what are your readings?

I'm running the CM7 w/the 2.5 radio - I'm in a 100% full time 4G area, but seem to have worse battery life when the 4G radio is on, so I just keep the phone on 3G - if I need the faster data I can always turn it on and off.
I'm running the stock kernal, no overclocking or setcpu type stuff going on.
Would like to hear from folks running this ROM w/killer battery life, what are your settings, tweaks, etc. Please specify if you're running an MR1 or Mr2/2.5 version and/or running the latest OTA 2 radio that just came out like yesterday.
I just turned off my FB sync (I forgot about that). I don't have gmail set up to sync automatically either.
I'm going to do this procedure a little later today and see if it helps, this is for the EVO, but, ya know....
34. "Calibrate" battery - (1) Turn device ON, charge it for 8 hours (or until LED turns green), (2) unplug and turn it OFF, plug it back in and charge for 1 hour (or until LED turns green), (3) unplug and turn it ON, wait 2 minutes, turn it OFF, plug it back in, and charge for 1 hour (or until LED turns green), (4) unplug it, turn it ON, and use normally.
Anybody else try this?
today will be my first full day of work use w/this ROM so we'll see what happens.

Best to keep 4g off if not using it. Also, turn Bluetooth off when not in use.

i had horrible battery life the first day - then it got better. then i flashed mr2 official and battery life is really solid. getting like 15-20 hrs with 4g always on, bluetooth on sometimes. one important thing is having a custom lighting table which i will post later.

I have never, nor do I intend to ever do this. I got an extended battery for a reason. I can go all day and then some on the official roms, and all of the Sense roms.
I am not new to CM7, I have run it on both an Eris, and an Incredible. Both devices got FAR better battery life on CM7.
I am not complaining about this rom, or Slayhers hard work. I simply want to gather information so that we may help him trouble shoot.

This is exactly what I did lol, I had lost 10% in the first 90 minutes, now I am at 58% at 5 hours. I have been streaming google music for 2 hours of that 5 though. I would guess I should have seen an increase in battery usage, but have not.

The battery readings are wrong, I get a full day on 4G with my stock battery and see those numbers for cell standby etc. I use lean kernel though

do you see those numbers for BLUE TOOTH though? We know good and well some numbers are fake, but that does not mean all.
FYI I am now at 37% and 7 hours and 7 minutes... I have not used google music since the last post and I am seeing the exact same battery drain as when I was using it.

I have absolutely horrible battery life when I'm at work (which is basically a bunker). On a normal day, my battery will be dead within 6 hours just sitting there on my desk.
However, when I am at home (great 4G signal), I see my device getting upwards of 16 hours with moderate use.
I will also say that since I upgraded to the most recent radio, I have been having much better battery life at home. Additionally, my phone has stayed much cooler with the most recent RC + new radio combination.

I heard if you change the render fx to n1 calibrated, then you will get like 1 hour extra of battery life. You can change the render fx by going to cyanogenmod settings.

The other numbers have to be wrong. Theres no way cell standby is the number one battery user.

my cell standby is also showing 30% with the new OTA 2 radio.

I switched to dream kernel (have not wiped battery stats) and am now at 88% after two hours, that puts me at 6% per hour verses yesterdays 10.

only works for AMOLED screens.
edit: to be clear, it only saves battery on AMOLED.

so what i have found is that after installing dream kernel and messing with the governor settings... along with being connected to wifi. my battery life has improved tremendously. i wiped battery stats this morning after a full charge and didnt notice any change.. then i flashed the kernel and messed with gov. settings... after rebooting ive noticed a huge huge difference.. just my 2 cents for anyone who had battery issues like me

Yesterday I was able to choke out 20 hours while in a 4G area the entire time.
Running RC 1.2, Imoseyon's leanKernel extreme mode (extremely undervolted and OCd to 1.4GHz) and using the InteractiveX governor.
Also, I just happened to reboot and surprisingly it only took away 1% of my battery. Amazing considering whenever I did that on a Sense ROM, I'd experience a battery loss ranging from 7%-10%.

What settings did you land on as best?

cpu is set max to 368 mhz(very low) but i can crank it up if im doing somethign like playing games or downloading and want speed. brightness is at about 15-20 percent. the dream kernel and mr2.0 radio have made a big diff too. the dream kernel made the biggest. usually when id power off or reboot id lose 6-10 percent same as someone else i saw post. now i lose maybe 1 percent which is a huuuuge difference considering you lose 10 percent just because you reboot. also i try to stay on wifi wherever i go. on 3g i def notice it drain quicker, but i am no expert and there are a lot of people on here who by far outexperience and outknowledge me(my new 2 words) so im sure other people have some suggestions

That is strange I am also using CM7 with an extended battery and still have 41% left after 14:56 on battery.
battery use does show
cell standby 31%
phone idle 19%
android system 19%
wifi 11%
dialer 10%
display 6%
voice calls 3%

Horrible Battery Life on Pinnacle 1.3

My battery drops 5% under 1 min without even use of the phone, even when the phone's on standby. After about 3 hours of moderate use (seesmic and whatsapp) it'll drop from 100% charge to about 50%. Sometimes right after I plug it out, I can see the battery drop to 99% then 98 and so on.
I'm running Pinnacle 1.3 now and I was of the impression that it was a great ROM for battery life. Before this I had a stock GB ROM, and then CM7. On CM7, the battery was also horrible.
I've run battery dry then charged it back to 100% and did battery calibration. still horrible.
any suggestions, please?

The battery life was ok with my stock GB ROM. I'm hopeful there're other solutions that don't include buying a new battery.

Sounds like you have a rogue app.

Try watchdog lite from the market. It should help to isolate which app is gone rogue.

If that doesn't work maybe just try reflashing. Make sure you have 100% battery when you flash as well. I've used ROMs before that I knew had good battery life and sometimes when I flashed them my phone died fast. I remember it happening on Serendipity VII before. Didn't make sense cause I had good battery life with it before, but that flash didn't go well or something. Reflash brought back good battery life.

As long as I don't play tons of games then I can get 25-30 hours and that's with many many texts throughout the day (4000-5000 a month) with a little web browsing and streaming Pandora for a little while over BT.

25-30hrs? Wow, that's a lot. I'm on 3G a lot during the day, mainly Seesmic and browising (stock browser and Opera Mobile). Watchdog seems to be working, my battery life seems better.

I'm not sure what Seesmic is but if you're doing a lot of web browsing that's definitely what is killing your battery life. The display will use more power than pretty much any app out there. I have my screen brightness as low as it'll go and I don't leave my screen on for a long time when I do turn it on. Plus the white colors of websites uses more energy on AMOLED screens.

Will a reflash help? I put Serendipity VII on my and my gf's captivate, and we're looking at about 7 hrs max battery life with minimal use.

I went from Serendipity VII to Pinnacle 1.2 (and then 1.3) and got a lot better battery life. But I switched to Samurai kernel...

Yes I also have the Samurai kernel, along with Voodoo. Still no dice though. I wish I could get the battery life I hear so many people talking about. I've been told to try out dlev 5.0.

Also make sure you have Automatic Brightness, Auto-rotate and Power Saving mode turned off.

i have brightness to the lowest, no auto brightness. i don't like auto-rotate so i keep it off. but i do have power saving mode on. why would that be off?

where is "power saving mode" setting on a captivate? simple questions:
1. when did you flash the rom?
2. Have you seen in settings which process/app is using your battery?

It did for me. I can't remember if I saw the battery life drop after flashing the 4.2 kernel update or not. I think when I reflashed I didn't flash anything and left it with version 3 or whatever it comes with.
Also, on Pinnacle I am using all stock stuff (kernel, modem), not the Samurai kernel or anything.

In display settings...
It should be off, it works with auto brightness to keep it dim and "save power" but if you're not using auto brightness its just another process running that is wasting resources.
Auto brightness is pretty useless on tw roms because that handy brightness adjustment by holding down the status bar and moving left or right.

1. Like Reamer09 says refash.....BUT don't forget to wipe data, wipe cache and dalvik cache. Wiping data and cache just before reflash.........it helps with my battery issues. I don't think there is any ROM out there with that bad a battery life. No dev would let that pass
EDIT: Just re-read.....your battery dropping like that after recharge can be a kernel issue......it happens to me on a a particular kernel (will not name ! devs all work very hard on their kernels.....) and flashing another one helped.

Ok I will reflash it. I've also noticed some lack of responsiveness while using the phone. For instance when I select an option in a menu anywhere, it pauses a bit (probably a second or two) before it carries out the selected command.
Another example is while I'm typing, I have haptic feedback on and so I feel a vibration everytime I touch a letter. The vibration is usually just a short buzz, but once in a while I feel a strange longer vibration. It's weird, really. I hope reflashing will also help with this.

Fast discharging

I896, Rooted, factory Gingerbread.
I have a Captivate and a Tab. Both Wifi only, no Sims, Airplane mode on, Bluetooth off. Machines are on but screen is off. The Tab looses 3% over the course of the morning and the Captivate looses 20%!
I'm running regular 'power user' type apps; Titanium Backup, Tasker, LauncherPro. If there are any apps notorious for secret batt consumption, let me know what to avoid.
Running SystemPanel Lite - I can't see any app that is taking up more CPU time than normal that would explain this kind of drain. The battery page shows a good proportion of battery use display and wifi. In one instance I used the Captivate so little that display showed less use than wifi. In the course of just checking phone power consumption, the display use percent way up, just like expected (Just to show that wifi was really doing almost nothing) and still I had lost more than 15% of battery over the time when the phone was supposedly idle, not connected to anything with the screen off. Some ghost is sucking the life out of my battery. Grrrr. What could it be?
I loose 30% in a night with wifi off, backlight set to absolute min and nothing runninng or syncing.
I don't get it. Any ideas? What do I try next?

If you don't have anything helpful (or knowledgeable) to say don't say anything.
Op, download watchdog from the market, (system panel is kinda ..meh.) and see if there us a rogue app munching battery.
You may consider flashing a ROM see if its just that firmware/kernel reacting to your phone.

Have you tried Juice Defender?
Also, check to make sure you don't have applications constantly running. What version of android are you running? Check in system settings -> status -> somewhere in here you can check the battery status and what applications are pulling the most juice ... From there if one application needs to be removed you can action it ...

Also try the "Battery Calibration" app in the market. It's free.

my captivate running cm7 STOCK will drain down to 20% from being idle for 12 hours
my battery will also drain 30% from 45 mins of wifi only use.
doesnt help him but thats my experience from my captivate

Menu -> Settings -> Wireless and Networking -> Wi-Fi settinngs -> Menu -> Advanced -> Wi-Fi sleep policy
Set it to when screen turns off.
We have to switch that every time we flash. I really wish it was default. Some ROMs also have background data control, but it's usually when wi-fi is on so it shouldn't be a problem.

You do know that cm7 doesn't have the proper hardware drivers from Samsung so the battery life is known to be HORRIBLE right? If not you should really read up on the ROM you're using
Flash any touchwiz ROM, especially a native I897 build and you will see a dramatic increase in battery life.

I'm on CM7 and am going on 27 hours with moderate usage.. Granted, I have the 1800 mah battery from the Sprint Galaxy S2

trying flashing to pinnacle. I too have battled weird captivate drain issues.

I've held off replying as I was trying a few things and figured I would report only once I was done.
I found and ran Battery Calibration, just before I read the post. Between that and turning Wifi sleep policy to off with screen off, I had a great weekend. I was getting a day and a half out of my phone, which considering the use, was very acceptable. I was getting about the same drain as my Tab. I had 1% battery drain after 4 hrs of screen off time. That seemed fine for me.
I got back to school where I teach and yesterday the phone drained as fast as it has before. Interestingly, it continued its rapid drain even after I left the school and went back home. So, it died at 4am this morning. I heard it shut down. The school has at least 4 routers, two of which have 5k access options. I know if I choose them, my laptop drains way faster. Is there a way to limit my wifi connection on the captivate and not use the faster 5k connection?
But, this still doesn't explain why, even after I leave the school, the Captivate continues to drain when it is 10ft from a single 100mb wifi router.
I'm almost ready to try a custom Rom, but not sure how that will affect my ability to use it as a phone, once I get my Sim activated. Still new to this all.

You think everyone running a custom ROM doesn't use the phone?
Shouldn't affect your ability to do anything...

The WiFi and cell radio do increase power on lower signal as we know, but that's not always the cause of drain. I remember times using Froyo when kswapd goes nuts for no reason, or trillian, email, twitter or some other app just starts using massive CPU. Many apps are probably never tested on a system that has no connection most of the time. That's where all the utilities come in handy to find the culpret. OSMonitor can help find CPU hogs. TiBu can freeze apps, or uninstall them temporarily. Juice Plotter can monitor drain over time (newer Androids have something like it built-in). It takes some time to find it, but newer versions of the OS make it easier and have less trouble.
Also the battery % is only estimated. I'd trust full to empty time rather than 90% to 80% time as 10% use since it's not really as linear as we think.

Not to point out the obvious, but it can be the battery itself that has the problem. They aren't exactly manufactured to NASA standards... well, maybe their standards lately, but the point is, sometimes the ghost you're chasing is staring you right in the face.

[Q] Horrible battery life on infuse

Can someone please help me with my horrible battery life on my infuse? I cant make it a whole day on my phone. I don't play games on it at all during the day because I work. The only thing I do is make calls and text. I had 100% battery this morning at 6:00am and it is now 1:30pm and I am down to 12%. I am running the latest version of catyrom on my phone and it was supposed to increase the battery life. My phone is less than a year old (probably only 6 months old if that) so the battery on it should not be shot. Any help would be awesome!

Should not be like that. All the uckl2 base ROM have very good battery life.
Try a reflash. I would go into cwm, wipe data, wrote cache, wipe dalvik, fix permission, go to mount, wipe system, data and cache. Re flash ...i would try Another uckl2 base ROM then go back to caty if battery seems better

Buy Juicedefender Ultimate, set it up whichever way works for you. I couldn't tell you about Catyrom and the JD AOSP helper compatibility.
Buy and set up SetCPU to downclock your CPU when your screen is off, and when your phone's charge goes under a certain amount. Change your governor to conservative, ondemand, or smartass. Those will help. You could try undervolting, but be wary of doing it too much.
Look at your battery useage history and work out your app issues from there.
A faster microSD card wouldn't hurt, class 4, 6, or 10 would be better than a class 2, if you're even using a microSD card. Faster read/write means less time reading/writing.
If you need even more power, you could always go to 2G networks if Catyrom allows you to use them. From my experience, it will interfere with speakers on other devices. I have ~8 pairs of speakers in my office, and the interference drives all my co-workers nuts.
And you could always carry a spare battery, which isn't the best of options, but it's a sure fire way to go on
Reduce the number of widgets you use, reduce the number of screens you have, remove redundancy in your apps, and turn off live wallpapers.

Thanks! I downloaded juicedefender and setcpu both. I had seen juicedefender in the market but was a little questionable about what it does. but I will see what and how good it does tomorrow. I have my phone charging right now so I will upload a pic of my battery life tomorrow around 3 so we can see how my phone is doing. When I looked at the battery usage when I plugged in my phone it was on for 7h 34m 24s on battery and when I plugged it in I had 6% battery. I really hope that this works. like I said all I do is text and call during the day.

JuiceDefender, to put it shortly, will kill your data connection/wifi/gps automatically and will enable them again on a schedule.
Those won't interfere with your texting or calling, but it will interfere slightly with your MMS. You'll have to wait for data to be re-enabled to download pictures/videos.
You can set up a schedule for work to be on a more frequent basis than the one when you're not at work, and once you set the battery threshold and the "ignore on low battery" function, it will stop all schedules once the battery reaches that point.
It will re-enable data/wifi when you turn your screen on so you can use it.
That's about most of what it does and it does work very well.
If you'd like, you can get cheap spare batteries from ebay. They mostly ship from China so they take up to a month to get to you, but they're very inexpensive. I just got my 2200 mAh battery (it fits just like the stock one) and it's not even broken in yet. It's 2 PM where I am and I unplugged my phone at ~8. I'm still above 65%. I don't tend to have very restricted battery use like some folks, but I do look for ways to reduce the battery waste. Most of my stuff works when the phone is in idle/deep sleep. I haven't done much of anything today with the exception of a very few calls and a few texts, a little surfing, and I downloaded a CM7 update from the CM7 port's thread.
When it's been broken in it should do better. CM7 isn't as battery friendly as some other ROMs but I like it very much so far. I have been furiously debating whether or not to move to Zeus ROM, as it seems like the big boy's Infuse ROM right now but I can't tuck away CM7 just yet
EDIT: Another, probably very minor, battery saver would be to download and install Adfree. It reroutes all outbound requests for advertisements to the device itself, so those don't download data and you don't see ads. Instead of them possibly keeping your scheduled data connection on for longer while they download (or pumping up your data useage), they never go outbound because they don't require internet access once checked against the HOSTS file.
Also don't forget to do what qkster advised. Bad flashes do happen, and you could have just had a bad flash.

I have never gotten what I thought was decent battery life out of this phone... I work as a field tech so this phone is my office... Serendipity gave me the best battery life of any rom I've tried and I've tried several.
When I first got it I used Infused rom I would average 3 to 4 batteries a day. When I went GB roms that dropped drastically to 1-2... Serendipity would get me through the work day (8-10hrs) and home w/ a little to spare. Lately I have been bouncing back and forth between caty and zeus averaging 2+ batteries a day.
Might add I received my phone as a hand me down from someone at work. He only used it for a few weeks but kept it stock.

On any rooted ROM, i usually use tibu and delete buddy now, facebook, att, tether manager, devive update manager, etc..every possible background crap.
Every user is different, but with just calls and text, is not unusual for me to have 2-3 days before a charge.
Data sync and wifi off when not using data

Rxnelson the about phone says display. But that is the case on almost all phones. I have my auto off set to 1min

You can also try following basic methods:-
1. Turn Off: GPS, WiFi, Screen Rotation, Bluetooth, APN, Vibration, Animation etc.
2. Minimum Screen Brightness Settings
3. Minimum Screen Timeout setting.
4. Dont install Widgets based apps on home-screen
5. Kill the un-necessary background apps from Task Manager.
6. Use black theme in apps.

Something I've found helps a lot is rebooting every morning. I'm running Zeus and noticed that the first day after a reboot I get great battery life (light- to medium-use would leave the battery at 50% after 12 hours). By the second or third day, I'd barely make it through the day. Since I've started rebooting every morning my battery life has been great. I also used BetterBatteryStats to help figure out which apps were keeping my phone awake. I learned that the Stocks app runs in the background waking the phone regardless of settings. Juice Defender is really a waste of time - you'll get better battery life by figuring out what's killing your battery and getting rid of it than having Juice Defender disable all of your phone's features when the screen is off(while using battery itself).

Man your battery life shouldn't be that bad. If it isn't a bad ROM flash then you could have a bad battery. Sometimes batteries die after a few months.
I did a lot of testing for apps and whatnot to try and see if I could maximize battery life. I tried all the juice defender and similar apps and didn't really like how they were killing off my services when the screen was off.
I found out that the main killers of my battery life were specific apps. When I used email apps with IMAP push services I noticed that they would kill my battery because they kept preventing my device from sleeping. I sometimes need about 18 hours in a day before I can charge so I really wanted to maxmize the battery as much as I could. I monitor new apps when I install them. Some seem sneaky so the battery stats might say that the app is only using something like 4% but it is also making the Android OS keep alive and use a higher percentage. I have about 70 apps installed but deleted most of the apps that seemed to kill my battery. In an 18 hour day now it is common for me to have at least 50% or more battery left over. It did take me a while to get this kind of battery life though. I was getting pretty frustrated for a while.

[Q] Heavy battery drain issue - help troubleshoot

Of late, I have been having heavy drain of battery on my Atrix 2. I am running JB 4.1.2 (672.300.404.ME865.Retail.en.05). Trying to troubleshoot it (including recalibration) since the last few days without luck.
The symptoms...
- Sudden shut down - Have had 50%+ charge levels. Goes down to 5% and shuts down within minutes. (You can see the random drops in the charge levels in the pic)
- Completely drained out battery charges from above 40% when plugged in & charges to 100% in no time. (that 67% charge in the attachment is within 5 mimutes of power plug in)
Does the battery need a replacement?

Try changing battery... even i had same problem with Custom rom. Battery used to last only for 10 to 12 hours but now its more than 17 hours on JB 4.1.2 leak,,,,...Use stock rom. and remove any unncessesary apps and installl ROM again if u want :good:

How old is your Atrix 2? If over a year then battery surely begins to give lesser performance. Disable any other task killer / memory manager & just let OS do its thing. See if installing Media Scan disable from play helps & do not keep using random chargers, make use of original charger as received with phone. Finally see Better Battery Stats. It is said battery stats should never be wiped but see if it helps you and finally search for Apex's better battery life guide for many handy tips.
I disabled notifications, sync, froze higher wakelock apps & my battery life improved a bit but then it is no fun existing in a bare bones environment.

The phone is just about a year and half old. The drop in battery performance is just too drastic, sometimes it doesn't even last an hour after the charge. Will try to go back to original ROM and see if it improves else will probably have to go for a new battery pack.

Look like a battery problem to me its not the ROM but anyways turn off location services and wifi they are a big battery drainer
Use 2G when u dont need high speed.......

Think mine is clearly a battery issue. Replaced the battery with a new one yesterday and now the phone lasts 6 hrs at least on a single charge.

I couldn't write to developer's forum so I'm asking here.
I've recently firmwared my AT&T A2 CM 10.1.3 and battery drains really fast! The previous build was CM 10.1 (25th of June). I wiped cache and dalvik cache and firmwared CM 10.1.3. At least 3 people report that thie batteries on this ROM drain slow.
What did I do wrong???

Battery life varies so much from user to user that it is impossible to answer your question without A LOT more information.

Download the app and follow the directions in the op. That and reading through that thread itself should tell you everything you need to know about what is using up your battery.
That being said, everyone has different habits and expectations when it comes to their battery. What one person says is good battery life, another will likely say is bad. So just keep in mind that there is not a right or wrong, just what is right or wrong for you.
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.

Thank you fro your answer. When I used previous version of CM the battery lasted 3 days with minimal using and turning the flight mode at night on.
As long as I installed newer version with JBX kernel the battery lasts 20 hrs max.
Power Tutor says that the most hungry apps are Android System and Kernel
