would it be possible/what would it require to port google apps (new gmail) from the honeycomb system dump or would it require the honeycomb framework too?
They require the Honeycomb frameworks. YouTube/Books are using (at least) the new animation frameworks, and Gmail is using Fragments. Those are just a few examples.

Hi!
Is there a way to port apps from the older Xperia 1.6 to the 2.1?
I absolutely loved the curved lockscreen, the contacts app, the dialler app, the notification bar and the simple-no-frills-gallery (the new 3d gallery app is all eye candy but doesn't open the pictures in full-resolution) on the older OS and miss them badly after upgrading them.
Is it possible to simply extract the APKs from a rooted 1.6 phone and replace them on a 2.1? Or any other workaround?
i really don't see the utility of the phone icon in there, why they are not putting some other icon, like email and such? I know other after market allow you to change it, but if a firmware have been modded why leave the phone icon there?
I've wondered the same thing.
It's easy enough to change with the Launcher Pro app.
The launcher is an app, they would have to recode the launcher app. Most firmware customizing is changing the framework, adding apps and/or replacing them. Stock launcher has the phone icon/shortcut. Most don't recode the apps that are included with the rest of the AOSP pull.

This is my second Android app. I develop this little app because I prefer 3rd party launcher (e.g. Apex) than existing Sense 4 Rosie. Existing hacked Sense 4 Rosie (full version) currently doesn't support non Sense widget correctly and is less feature-rich than many other launchers.
Even if you install a 3rd party launcher, Rosie still consume your precious memory as a system service. But if you freeze Rosie and thus release it from memory, you'll lose your lockscreen app shortcuts. After painstakingly reviewing the codes in HTC shortcut components, I found that Rosie actually act as a content provider to supply information of its launcher bar shortcuts to lockscreen. So without Rosie, lockscreen has no information to construct its shortcuts. Therefore I wrote this little app to replace the role of Rosie as the content provider. What's more, it allows you to select your own apps with a simple config screen and store the data separately. And it doesn't stay in the memory permanently.
Installation instructions:
Uninstall Rosie (Freezing doesn't work because Android doesn't allow two content providers of same type) ** You're reminded to make a backup first **
Install HTC Lockscreen Shortcut Provider
Run Lockscreen Shortcuts
Select your app for the 4 shortcuts
Hit back to save settings and notify HTC lockscreen

Think you could bundle the apks into a zip for us?
How come it's possible to use the Moto launchers and apps on aosp builds but not any of the Sense apps or launcher?
How did you get the launcher to work? I put it in System/app but it's not working. The circle widget also doesn't work. It says, Not for use on 3rd party home screens.
EDIT: The only apps I got to work are the Circle widget, homescreen.apk, the camera app, and the weather app. I can't get Calculator, Calendar, etc. to work.
