[Q] Just want to install a ROM....

Thats it... A simple (but I want to do it without bricking my $600 phone) ROM flash.
This is the ROM I would like to install:

yes, I am already rooted. I had a major malfunction in BAMF 1.6.3 this a.m. when a battery went dead. I replaced the battery and the phone went nuts... So I unrooted the phone and then re-rooted. I couldnt get help in the IRC channel to install this ROM I am asking about so I thought I would try to get some help here.

I am not seeing the question here... Do you have rom manager installed? You could install simply from there. That's how I did my initial rom install.

Just download .zip place on sd card and flash using rom manager or manually on clockwork recovery.

Stock sense basic debloat ROM does not use the GB radio. And to install I would recommend not using rom manager to install it tends to cause problems.

Don't use Rom manager. Download the Rom. Reboot into recovery using Rom manager. Make a backup if you want. Wipe data. Wipe cache. Go to advanced. Wipe davlik cache and battery stats. Go to install zip from SD and select your Rom. When its done reboot.

FIRST AND FOREMOST: HAVE AMPLE BATTERY CHARGE!! I don't flash with anything less than 50%. If you do, then continue at your own risk.
1. Go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930 and pick out a ROM you think that you would like. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANY GINGERBREAD ROMS. These are still in ALPHA.
2. After you have the ROM downloaded, plug your phone into you computer and put the ROM anywhere on your sd-card. I made a new folder called ROMs and put all my ROMs in there. This keeps things tidy.
3. THIS IS OPTIONAL, but saves you a lot of time in the future. Download Titanium Backup. I would HIGHLY recommend the PRO option. Costs money now, but will save you hours in the future. This program needs root. It will backup all your apps with their data so when you switch ROMs, everything is restored easily and fairly quickly. If you go with this approach, then open TB and backup all USER APPS with DATA. DO NOT BACK UP SYSTEM APPS!!!
4. If you do not have Rom Manager, Download it now. Free is fine. Open up Rom Manager and make sure you have the latest Clockwork Recovery installed. If you don't, then install it. If everything is fine, click the option to boot into recovery. While some people use RM to install the ROMs, I find its better to do it manually.
5. When in Clockwork, go to backup and restore(hit power or home button to choose highlighted option). Choose Backup and let it do its thing.
6. When done, press the menu key until it goes to the main menu.
7. Choose Wipe data/factory reset and let it wipe the data. Do not worry, this will not touch your sd-card. All your pictures, movies, music, ROMs, and everything else on the sdcard will still be there.

The rom can't be in a folder on your SD card when flashing it has to be on the root of the SD card.

Yes the rom can be in a folder. Only radios cannot be flashed from folders.

Agreed... ROM does CAN be in a folder... Radios or baseball updates cannot...

Thanks for the replies. For not knowing what the question was, it sure was answered pretty thoroughly.
I did buy Ti Pro a while back and use it a lot. That should be no problem once I figure out why I am not rooted now. I did the whole routine yesterday and Ti cant get su for some reason now.... yay for that. I guess I will try the whole thing again. (It may be that I need to get the proper busybox for Ti Pro to work and be allowed su)
So if I have read this correctly, I will be alright with the debloat ROM I mentioned earlier right? Since it is not gingerbread based right?

My ROMS are always in folders when I flash them on my devices and it has worked just fine!

If you're using CWR (which i think is the only option these days?) you totally can. Just choose "install from SD card" and it'll let you navigate your folders. I have a neatly organized "RUU" folder on my SD card. Certain things like radios need to pushed as pg05img.zip on the root of the SD card.

Well, with all the help, I did manage to get everything back as it should be. Thanks a lot for that too!
I got super tired of trying to get someone to answer me in IRC. I think I will just come here with my questions from now on and leave that place to those who have the patience for it.
I also got too used to BAMF I think because I ended up flashing to 1.7 anyway... 2.0 looks really good. I think that is still in Beta or I read the post wrong altogether...

[GUIDE] How I Root, Recover and Optimize Stock 2.1

Hey guys,
Dont get me wrong, im pretty much a noob myself Nowadays alot of developement is going on with the new ROMS, till they are finished I needed a stable ROM and I have to admit nothing is better than good old stock 2.1, but to get it in useable condition you do have to do some tinkering. This guide is aimed at people who have just rooted their phones and want to know what they can do, or for people who want new ideas if they are going back to stock 2.1. Its just a collection of things I do, when I flash stock 2.1.
Please be aware, that although these instructions are accurate to my knowledge, sometimes there are problems, so do not try this if you dont feel comfortable with any of the instructions.
1. Which SBF?
The stock cincinnati bell 2.1 is the most current and the most updated version of all the SBF's. Unless you are uprading to a new ROM which require another type of base SBF this is the way to go for 2.1. It makes no regional differences that I know off, you may have to put in your APN settings. Reasons for using this SBF is, first its the most updated, most stable and reportedly has best camera quality of all the SBF's, plus it is set to 720 MHZ by default. The SBF code is:

2. How to Root?
Once you have flashed your SBF, using either RSD lite in windows or sbf_flash in linux, the easiest way to root is using the universal androot app. Install the app on your phone, open the app and click the root button. A little heads up here, you need to be connected to either wifi or the data network before you use the app because to root the phone the app uses an exploit which requires wifi to be toggled. If it isnt on, it will not work. With the wifi on, press root and you're done. The newest stable UniversalAndroot can be found at this link.

3. What can I do after rooting?
First of all you can install Open Recovery + Androidiani Recovery. What these are, are custom recoveries with which you can make nandroid backups, wipe reset your phone and cache and apply neat tweaks to make your phone work better on 2.1. To install open recovery download the openrecovery.apk from the following link.

Install the openrecovery app. And reboot your phone once. After the reboot, connect your phone to the PC and create a folder called nandroid and inside that creat a folder called openrecovery. And place it into the root of the SD card.

Disconnect your phone from the PC. Now open the openrecovery app. And press install recovery. A superuser request will appear. Allow it and open recovery will install on your phone and create the neccessary folders on your SD card. Now connect your phone to the PC its time to install androidiani recovery. Download the Androidiani recovery here.

Unzip the file. You will see one folder and one update file. Copy the folder and paste it into the root of your SD card. You will notice that the computer will prompt you because there is already an open recovery folder in your SD card. Allow the computer to replace, the old folder with the new one that you are pasting. Then copy the update.zip and just place it in the root of your SD card. You are all set and have installed openrecovery.
What can I do with Androidiani?
Turn off your phone. Now press the volume up button and keep it pressed, while pressing the power on button. The phone will boot into androidiani recovery. Use the volume keys to navigate up and down in the menu and use the camera button to select an option. You will see numerous options in androidiani. The first thing to do is go in the Eclair Modding menu.
I usually do the following things.
1) Install memhack: This moves your /cache folder and allow for lots of apps to be installed so your 173 mb app space will not limit you, which is usually why people want to move to froyo in the first place.
2) Install JITV7
3) Eclair Kernel Modification: This installs busy box and increases functionality.
4) Zipalign Apps. This allows less ram to be consumed when you use apps. I usually zipallign system wide.
Reboot your phone normally, after mods are complete.
4. System app removal?
Useless system apps can safely be removed to make space for more apps. I install titanium backup from the market and use it to uninstall apps. Here is the list of apps I usually remove safely.
1. Gestures.apk (Motorola sign gestures, useless app never used it)
2. Corporate Calender
3. Corporate Directory
4. Quickoffice Trial
5. Kickback
6. Soundback
7. TalkBack
8. MotoAccuweather.
5,6,7 are accesibility apps which can easily be redownloaded from the market. Accuweather isnt accurate and I have the stock AOSP geniewidget which is so much more sexier. Ill give the links to those.

Okay once system apps are removed. What rooted apps can you use. There are many. Ill just state what I use when I newly Flash.
1) Root explorer, very good for navigation etc.
2) Market Enabler, i use it to install google+ and other apps not avaible in my country.
3) Battery Calibration, everytime you flash a new ROM its good reset your battery Stats.
5. Finally
You can just use your phone as usual. If your phone number format is different because of the US SBF, just choose a different language in keyboard and locale. Itll fix your dialer format.
I choose to not overclock. With wifi on 24/7 and autosync. A few odd phone calls, sms's, 1 hour of GPS when I walk, some gaming, and 2 hours of music. I get an average of 1.5-2 days battery life with this setup. My SD card is formatted completely to FAT32. After installing all my apps, and games. I have 102 MB remaining internal memory.

this is good. something ive been looking for. was on stock rom for a month rooted. very stable but was itching to try out cm6 so i did. ive tried deleting voice dialler with titanium backup but it was kind of not supposed to be deleted because android kept telling me "voice dialler force closed" and i couldnt do anything else so i restored it back. i dont need or want voice dialler. and it also keeps running as a service. any way to stop it?

Before you ever delete any system apps, you should use TB to freeze them first and see if once you do it causes any ill effects. If not, then uninstall but you can always back up so if you ever want it back, Viola there it is.

I think I may have gotten a little crazy with the deleting, however. Everything is running fine at this point other than when I try to change ring/notification settings. Trying to access things gives me a force close every time.
I'm guessing I deleted something crucial. Anybody know what it may have been and how I can go about fixing this and/or getting around the situation? Will a simple program such as ringdroid replace whatever I got rid of? Shold I just flash a custom ROM?

Let me add that I rooted with SuperOneClick, and used RootExplorer for ditching my bloatware. Hope that helps a little!

What did you remove? Ringtones are stored in /system/media/, do they just not show up when trying to set it, or does something else happens? Are you missing your stock ringtones, or just your custom ones?

When I go to settings>sound...selecting eithr phone ringtone or notification ringtone causes my force close.
I think maybe I deleted my system/media thinking it was the stock media player
Not that I'm too bummed about it. The stock rings are all just crappy versions of the "T-jingle".

Well, looks like you took a risk and it came back to bite you. Reflash your ROM and try again.

Well...there's where the problem lies. I've never flashed a ROM. I'm sure I can handle it....just never done it.
And if I do need to flash a new ROM anyways, I feel like I should just flash a custom ROM. The gingerclone looks pretty nice. Does this delete my original ROM all together in the process? Are custom ROMs free of bloat?

That will wipe everything, so you should make a backup beforehand. yes, custom roms are almost always free of bloat, GingerClonev2 is only 124MB, where the stock rom is over 200MB. There are a few issues we're still working out, but it's pretty steady. otherwise, Teddy is releasing an update to an older ROM sometime soon as well, so I'd be on the lookout for that.

What's the best way to save my original ROM to my desktop on my computer?
I'm just worried about killing my phone completely at this point.....

If you have CWM, use the backup menu, which uses Nandroid to backup everything by dumping everything on your phone into images. This all dumps onto your SDcard in the clockworkmod folder.
You can't brick your phone using CWM, you can only do that using ODIN, and only if you're not following directions/being intentionally stupid

Yeah, copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop, that'll copy everything off. I wouldn't suggest Rom Manager, many people have problems with that CWM. Look in the Dev forum for the CWM thread, and use that one.

In recovery mode, there should be a backup and restore menu. use the backup option, and then copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop. that's your backup.

Okay. I plugged in my phone to the computer, and dragged a copy of the entire clockworkmod folder to my desktop.
Gingerclone is downloaded. Drag it to my SD? anywhere specific? or just on it?
On my desktop now is: folder/download, .recoverychecpoint(1KB), .salted_hash(1KB), .settings(1KB), and .settings2(1KB)

After clearing stuff out and rebooting...it rebooted to the original rom with none of my added apps.

Download manager keeps stopping and forces closed.
I reboot into recovery...and my options are:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
If I try to reinstall packages, I get" E: failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip(no such file or directory)
E: signature verification failed.
I'm in over my head now. Anyone out there maybe wanna help walk me thorough this on AIM or google chat or anything?

Edit: actually what it sounds like you did was something similiar to what i did with a samsung galaxy s i deleted a bunch of apps and the i did a data wipe and factory restore without flashing my custom firmware through cwm and when it factory resetted it was real buggy from all the missing apps so u will have to odin

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I have rooted my infuse, I used the one click root method. I installed Ti backup and performed a backup of all my apps. I then downloaded Rom Manager latest version off the market. I told it to flash the galaxy i9000 information as thats what i had read was required. Now when I go to make a backup of my rom as it is, it restarts boots into recovery, all the top lettering is blue and says android system recovery, then it shows the options of reboot, reinstall packages,delete all user data, delete cache data, and format internal sd card.
below all this in yellow it shows a bunch of checksum confirmation, then not need cheksum confirmation, Mov1_check executed, update media finished, #MANUAL MODE#, appling multi-csc, installing multi csc, then it shows install defaul apk-files, please wait, then install default apk-files, finished.
at this point the phone just sits there and never reboots or anything. so i choose reboot the system and it does. I can find any backup of the rom on the external or internal sd card. I have both. did i do something wrong somewhere? am i missing the file in the structure somehow? thanks for all the help.

You have to update the recovery in order to use Clockwork. Right now you are in the stock recovery. Once you do it right you will see many more options and the CWM recovery screen (red letters). Also, I really don't have Amy plans to install a. Custom rom, so a Ti backup would probably be enough anyway right??

Yes you will know when you are in Red Clockwork recovery, it looks way different than the blue stock one. Install the update twice and you should see it.
I would just do a batch backup of your apps and data with Titanium. You don't need a Nandroid backup really unless you are flashing roms or kernels and something goes wrong.

[Q] Force close after adding Reboot option

So I'm using lfaber's Supercharged V5 ROM and I tried to add the Reboot option to the power menu (JRW's method).
I messed up when following the instructions, however. I downloaded the ZIP to my phone and then installed it from the SD card, but forgot to wipe the cache first like the instructions said. So I wiped the cache and then went back and installed the ZIP again.
When I booted back up, I got force close messages for what seemed to be all my apps. Is this because I messed up the instructions? And what should I do to fix it? Can I backup into SCV5 again like I did at first or should I go back to the stock deodexed 2.3.6?

Usually it will force close because of an issue with signing, not because of cache wiping... try flashing the different 1% battery mods. (Don't forget to wipe cache partition and Dalvik Cache)

Is everything force closing or are just Google/Motorola apps force closing? Just keep closing the notification windows until they stop.
There's three ways of getting the zip onto your SD card, two of which may not be possible...
-Use the Motorola "Phone Portal" app to "Connect with wifi" and transfer the zip from your computer to your phone via wifi.
-Use the browser to download the zip file and make sure you can find it on your sd card
-Use a microSD card reader to put the file on your sd card
However there's another thing you can do that should fix you up.
-Make a CWM backup
-Flash SCV5, then the update zip
-Use CWM to "advanced restore" "data".
This will fix you up on any system modifications but restore your apps/data.

I didn't have an sd card reader, so I just backed up my system, then backed up into SCV5 and flashed the update. Phone is running fine with no force close issues.
If I understood you correctly, what I need to do now is put a different 1% battery mod than the one included in the ROM and then flash the reboot option again?
I'm a little confused as to why the 1% battery mod is involved at all?
Also, restoring data via CWM didn't seem to bring back my home screen setup. Would I need to restore system in CWM for that? I'm guessing if I did that my force close issue would just come back though, right?

Restoring a CWM data backup should bring back your homescreen setup, as it restores the entire /data folder... Interesting. Don't restore system otherwise your problems will comeback

Very strange, shouldn't be nothing with the reboot.zip that would affect any of that unless you got a bad download?

Yea, I got an error when I backed up through CWM, but it was just generic. I was more worried about having the phone working at that point than having everything backed up, so I didn't worry about.

Are you saying that you don't think flashing a different 1% mod would allow me to flash the reboot.zip without getting those force close errors again?

Not at all. When I first released the reboot.zip it worked fine with V5 but I have always run my 1% vertical mod and when I flashed it I lost the ability to reboot with the power menu. So I then went back and modified all of my 1% battery mods to work correctly with my reboot.zip. you should have zero problems with them as long as they are mine or the one that comes with V5. I have not had a chance to test with anything on 2.3.5 yet though

The reason I first recommend you to flash a different 1% battery mod was because it re-writes any system files that the first flash may have messed up. Now that you're up and running again you don't need to do anything else.
It's odd that your homescreen configuration wasn't saved... what launcher do you use?

I use the one that comes with SCV5, Go Launcher. I was able to restore the home screen directly from the Go Launcher app. So at this point, I'm up and running, but I still don't have the reboot option. Should I just backup as is (with SCV5.1) and try flashing the reboot option again the same way I did before? I would just seem weird if I just did the same thing again, because why I wouldn't just have that same force close issue like the first time?

Sure, backup and try flashing reboot again. But this time redownload the zip first.

I second that. Do a CWM backup then redownload the mod, and flash it. The download may have been corrupted last time around.

Running the backup now. I will let you know how it goes and I'll make sure to do a fresh download. Thanks.
Edit: this worked perfect. I realized when I did the download again that originally downloaded via the QR code, so maybe there's something wrong with that? Or something wrong with my phones QR code reader? I used Goggles.
