[Q] Need help installing HTC keyboard apps .apk on samsung captivate - General Questions and Answers

I have tried to search the forum but could not find the solution that I've been looking for. The problems that i am having is that I am trying to install the HTC keyboard onto my samsung captivate. I've download the .apk file for it and tried to install it with astro file manager and dropbox. Apparently when i try to install the file, the phone pops up a notification saying install blocked (for security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in android market). So the thing i want to ask is how do i get rid of this problem and install the .apk file? (im a N00b when it comes to adroid OS)

you have to enable sideloading of apps. search for this in the forum using the SEARCH TOOLS

run .apk without file manager

I have some issues with a device I bought (coby internet tablet 7015) that have resulted in my being unable to use the android market (I always get a 404 error) or the app that came with it (appslib) I seem unable to install any apps (with .apk) because I do not have a file manager. I'm looking for a way to install apps without one, or maybe one I can install that is not in .apk format!

Go into your browser on the device and find an apk for a file manager, then download it. when it's downloaded you should be able to open it through the browser. Then you can copy over an apk for ME (MarketEnabler) and install it. ME will let you use the market.
I wrote down some options:
1. If you rooted your phone and such you can just use adb from SDK
Code:
adb install [dir/package.apk]
(usb debugging enabled).
2. If you have internet on your device, upload a file manager apk you downloaded from a pc and put it where your phone can download it from with the browser. So when the download on your phone is complete you can click on the finished download in the notification bar and install it the file manager.
3. You can also try appbrain.
Though I think you should first fix the market problem. How about resetting the phone?
You can also use DropBox. Download the .Apk to your computer, pop it in your DropBox folder, open DropBox on your device, tap the Apk, and voila!
technically its not a phone its a "Coby internet tablet" but I get what you mean, and I have actually reset it to factory default's twice with no success.
To the first poster thanks, that did work to enable to to get the file manager but what is market enabler? and any suggestions on where I can find it?
http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/downloads/detail?name=MarketEnabler_v3.1.1.2.apk
It can fake a provider to get access.
How does it work? Every time I tried it would say "We've got a problem Houston"

errmmm... every time I install ME it's ok...
try installing the 2.2.6 market from this child forum??
try appbrain. It should let you start a direct download from your PC.
If everything fails then the only thing I can suggest is installing all apps from .apk

He would need root for it to work.
If you do have root, try this http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
It works better than MarketEnabler.
You do have WIFI enabled? And added your google account? Does it have a SIM card?

installing an apk

ok, i have just done the v10d update and the video is much better...
Now id like to install an apk from my desktop of minidiary but it doesnt install..
Is that what rooting is for? to accept all apk's?
Sorry for the dumb question, i was a symbian s60v3 and s60v5 user..
Nope. To install apk's you just need to tell the phone to accept non-market items. Go to your phone's settings, then Applications and check the top option (should be called something like Unknown Sources, I have to translate from Dutch).
Then just copy the apk to your phome and use Polaris Office or a separate apk installer from the market to browse to the apk and install it.
Hello
I tried that and it didnt work, was not installed or something like that. I ticked it to accept non android market apps.
Its probably pirated i guess.. found it on the net. Does rooting make it accept all non-signed apps? What is root for?
Thanks
ps: does anyone know where i can download mini-diary. Great little app i saw in the galaxy s2
No, rooting gives you administrative access to some files which you normally don't have so you can customize the phone the way you like it.
The safest way to download applications is via the Market app on your phone (you can also try http://market.android.com). However if you don't want to pay for some apps then you can search google adding the ".apk" and the apk version in the search bar.

[Q] App missing from market after upgrade to ICS

Hello
I have jus upgraded my Nexus S to ICS OTA (manually) and cannot install application that I own. It cannot be found in phone's market and on the page in my desktop computer it says that this app is incomatible with my Samsung Nexus S. Can sth. be done? I have bought this app, this is crazy that I cannot use it!
When i updated to ICS i couldn't find ES File Explorer in market, no idea why not. However from memory i fixed it just by googling the name and clicking on the market link, then opening it with the market app (option pops up). Alternatively, the market now has a sync feature, click install on your computer browser and it will "send" it to your phone (ie. download it from market automatically).

That's not Google's fault. The developer of your app restricted it based on android version number. Complain to the app developer.
App author needs to update version and possibly updates it for ICS compatibility. Not ICS fault. Here's a workaround: if you have another Android device that can install the app from the Market, extract the app apk using Astro (app backup), copy the apk to your phone's sdcard, and manually install it.

Not app's fault
I had this happen with a bunch of apps on my Optimus V and I really don't think it's the devs' fault. I was looking through Tripit's androidmanifest.xml file and there are no device restrictions (besides SDK minimum of 3). Also when I try to install them manually, I just get "application not installed". It's driving me batty, I might have to downgrade.

[Q] Installing .apk in CM7 on SGS2

Ok, so I have spent the last week searching for an answer to this problem, and I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out and others who may have similar problems.
With a rooted SGS2 and stable CM7 rom, I wanted to install the stock messaging app as I liked the "bubble" GUI better. Further, I found a copy of a camera app with higher bitrates/other improvements that I wanted to install as well. but every time I install them, I get "application not installed" with a check mark.
My method was:
Checked to install apps from unknown sources
Uninstalling old app (after backup)
Copying new apps to system/app to replace
Using root explorer in r/w to install them (didnt work)
So then tried:
Signing the apps using Signaptik/Zipsigner
Changing permissions to same as stock apps
It seems nothing that I try to install in system/app will install. Actually, any of these apps, no matter their location, will not install. Why is this? I'd really like the better camera app and my old mms.apk back!
Cheers!
------EDIT------
The camera.apk I want to install was built for SGS2, the mms.apk I wanted to install is stock from sgs2
Enable non-market apk installation.
Go to Settings – Applications – tick the “Unknown Sources” checkbox at the very top. Accept the warning which pops up by tapping on OK.
If you downloaded the file on PC, transfer it to phone.(sd card)
Open the file explorer (if you don’t have one, download any file manager from the android market) and browse to the location where you’d transferred the file.
Tap on the file to install it.
They won't install because they have dependency on a framework or application that does not exist in CM7.
Try installing them with ADB
adb install <apkname>
It will give you the full error message.

[Q] Application not installed

I would like to update an apk, (not through market), but the file manger returned a message said the Application is not installed. If I delete the apk, then I can install it, but all the related data are gone. I would like to ask is there any way to resolve this problem next time I update an apk?
