[Q] Install Application From Browser - HTC Inspire 4G

I am getting an Inspire to replace my messed up Captivate and end several months of frustration I hope. One thing is that I need to install some application from my company over the web. They are not in any market at all, we just follow a link and it downloads the apk file and then I can install them. I am not sure how far from the standard ROM I have to stray to allow me to install applications directly from the file system.
Is it enough to simply root the phone or do I need to actually place a custom ROM on the phone to get this feature? In my captivate I replaced the ROM as I needed Froyo to even use the applications but here the Inspire starts with Froyo so I am hoping I don't have to go that far.
I really wish ATT wasn't such a pain about locking down the market but allowed me to override it when I need to.

If you want to avoid rooting, etc (it's a pain in the ass on this phone) maybe you should just use the Sideload Wonder Machine?

Well that will certainly get me there with some manual intervention, I will have to see if I can actually get to the mobile page to download the software from my standard desktop browser, or perhaps I can still download them then use the tool to actually install them. Decisions Decisions. Do you know if simply rooting the phone will allow me to do installs as I see fit? I am not relishing the work to root the phone but would like to know the options.

You can still download them to your phone, transfer it from your phone card to your pc and then install with SWM. That's what I do when I can't get them directly. You have to connect to your pc to use SWM already so you can do it in one fell swoop!

the new version of SWM, u can install straight from the SD card, no need to move them over.

I do this same thing with screenconnect remote support software. I just use a user agent switcher for FireFox to download the apk and then just use sideload wonder machine.

Why not Samsung Kies?????

I've been doing a lot of reading over the last couple days so that I could install third party apps on my Captivate. At this point I have my phone rooted finally. The next step was for me to choose the SDK or the Root Explorer way to bypass the AT&T block.
I decided to contact Samsung via internet chat. I was informed by the customer service rep that all that I'm attempting to do can be done through the Samsung Kies Application. The install program can be found here:
There are provisions to install any program through the software. I was told just to place what ever program I wanted to install on my desktop and direct the Kies software there to install into my phone.
The program looks neat. Now I'm wondering if this is so simple why does everyone go through all the trouble to root the phones?
Apparently I'm not allowed to post an outside web link. I need a moderator to remove my restriction. If the restriction is removed I'll re-post the Samsung link.
What you are doing is called side-loading an application. This can be done without rooting, and is not a good reason to root.
People root there phones in order to bypass restrictions placed on their phone by the carrier or the manufacturer. For example, rooting will let you download apps from websites, download apps not intended for use by the carrier i.e. tethering, and lastly the give you more control over themes and roms on your Captivate.
Once you root, you can theme just about anything on your phone, because you have full access to all parts of the phone. So, if you want a Hello Kitty icon next to all menu options, then you'll have access to put that there.
Roms are the reason I rooted. People smarter than me can release what amounts to a fully redesigned version of the OS. They can take parts from different phones, or create tweaks that fix a lot of the issues that the phone has. They can also create stable OS updates that we can use before we get the full release from our Carrier. Which means that we'll probably see a Froyo Rom working before we get a push from the software update in the phone itself.
"I see", said the blind man when he turned on the lights !!!!
I'm such a noob. I'll be learning.

Take screenshot without root?

Are there any apps that let you take a screenshot without rooting? I've been searching for this for days and haven't found anything, but I find it hard to believe that even iPods can do it yet Google couldn't figure out how to implement a screenshot feature? And I don't really want to root my phone just so I can take a screenshot.

if you have android sdk installed, you can just run
Code:
ddms
in terminal, a window will pop up, and then navigate to device->Screen Capture to take a screenshot. Let me know if it works and it should work if the phone is not rooted.
well supposedly 'shootme' has worked for some that arent rooted. not too sure if it is the truth or not, but that is what i have read on some of the comments left as feedback on the market itself.
i havent tried it myself so just kinda wanted to let you know what i had previously heard of.

The iPod is just a series of devices all running the same operating system with similar hardware specs. Android is an operating system with many different variants on numerous phones with varying hardware specs. Because of this variation it is not easy to 'figure out how to implement a feature.'
Sent from my Hero that never dies! ;D
Depending on your device, ShootMe may work as stated previously. Unlike other screenshot apps, it still attempts to work even if root access is not available. It worked perfectly on my Evo before I rooted it.
If it doesn't work for you, you can try the method mentioned previously. Depending on which device you have, there may be a temp root available. I believe z4root does this on certain phones. Upon reboot, root access will no longer be available and you'll need to run the app again.
Google does not natively allow for screenshots to be taken for security purposes. If an app can take a screenshot of your phone at any time, it can record information without your knowledge - passwords, banking info, etc. When you root your phone, you are able to bypass a lot of the "rules" set in place by the OS. Yes, it's a lame excuse as computers and other mobile OS's have it built in.

I'm trying to install Android SDK now but it says I don't have Java SE Development Kit installed, even though I do.
@plainjane I looked at the z4root thread but a lot of the latest replies are saying it bricked their phone so I don't think I want to try it.
Use MyPhoneExplorer (usb debugging must be turning ON), connect via USB and take screenshot easily.

Here is how I rooted my phone if you are wanting to give it a try:Lifehacker
As for the Java SE Development Kit, the whole download takes a lot of try and try again. Try to uninstall and reinstall.

[for any programmer/hacker] Want to install the Homebrew App (.Xap) for freely?

I have one idea for great solution [need help from experts].
Hey guys, about two months I started to find some way to unlock my HTC HD7.5 with Mango at the latest update.
But up till now, I never find a concrete way to Unlock my Windows Phone because I find any different problems when I tried to Unlock my Device.
It was a true damnation for me, because I like so much to personalize my things, it's my passion and sincerely I don't accept to have one phone with the same aspect of the all originals.
Now I explain my idea,
With the original Microsoft Marketplace App on our Smartphones, we can always download and install directly the Apps (.Xap) inside and without Chevron.
For the Homebrew it's not the same, we can't install this directly like Marketplace, we need always the unlock.
But now the idea coming in my mind, if we study this App function and adapt it for install the custom Apps by the Web browser, and we put it on same blog with his website gadget, can also make that functions?
Pratically I think:
We create some blog/site with info, news, and the App-gadget who can simulate the Marketplace functions, with the running and installing process.
After we can open that through our Smartphone's IE9 and we feely download ad install the homebrews apps, also the jailbreaks/unlocks (if we create some kind of new).
Anyway it's a great idea, and I'm sure we need the concrete gadget, me I can't realize because I don't have some programmator experiences, but I find this bast**d idea
Here there are much programmators, for they maybe it's not a problem to realize!
I hope xD
It's entirely possible that I'm misunderstanding due to your English (though I doubt I'd do as well in whatever your native language is) but I *think* what you're suggesting is already well-known to not be possible.
First of all, the phone will neither install nor execute unsigned apps (that is, homebrew) unless it is developer-unlocked. You can test this on a dev-unlocked phone; temporarily revoke the dev-unlock, and try to launch any app that you sideloaded onto the phone. It won't work. Since it's extremely unlikely that will be able to add the Marketplace signature to homebrew XAP files, that's a no-go.
Second, we already know how to install apps from IE on the phone (if you look at my XapHandler app, that's what it does). However, just because we know how to do it doesn't mean it can be done on every phone. First, you need dev-unlock just so you can execute unsigned code on the phone at all. Second, you need root-unlock so the XAP installation code runs with enough privileges to install apps.
If instead you mean just make a website that spoofs the Marketplace, that's easy to do but it won't help. The phone doesn't actually really care what Marketplace site it connects to; it just downloads the app over HTTP from some web server. The problem is that the XAP file needs to be signed (first issue that I mentioned) or a dev-locked phone won't install it.

[Q] blocking ads in apps

hello all,
i just bought nexus 5.... i am kind of noob when it comes to android.
is there i can block all annoying ads that crops up within apps and browser?
i dont want to risk rooting my phone.
pls suggest me easiest, secure way to do this....
thanks.
You can try opting out from Ads from Google Settings but the only way to get rid of all the ads is to use an app like adaway which needs root. I don't know why you think it's a risk rooting your phone?? You can get back to stock anytime to claim warranty.

hello
since i am new to android, i dont want to mess up/experiment on my phone. atleast till i get hang of it.
i used play a lot with my N95 before. so, till i get firm grasp on android inner workings, i wouldnt want to do anything with its in built features.
further, rooting is bit too technical for me..... there is no application that can root with just a click like it existed with S60 V3 OS.....
so will wait till such a thing comes up.
Try to find in playstore

Even though there are tools available to do this (simple search on xda will locate those), you really should take the time to understand the 4-5 (simple) steps involved in rooting. That way, you know exactly what is happening (versus a toolkit that will attempt to do everything for you, and just tell you "all done" - without you having a clue about what really happened). The advantage of understanding these steps is that later, if you want to install an update or want to switch kernels and read a guide that tells you to flash "xyz", or restore from nandroid etc, you will not be clueless. Or if somebody tries to help you with an issue, and asks you to go your recovery, you won't be asking "how do I go to recovery screen"
My suggestion: If you are ever planning to root your Nexus 5, read the first 2 posts at http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...ide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905 - especially the parts highlighted in red.
Then, read it again <-- repeat till you understand it. If you have questions, read/search that thread to see if somebody already asked that question - and if not, ask in that thread.
The Nexus is probably the easiest device to root. But don't root till you are comfortable with it, and understand the steps involved.
Since you mentioned in your first post that you didn't want to root, you could try https://adblockplus.org/en/about
I must admit that I tried it once and wasn't able to get it to work right, and so I just installed adaway (that requires root) instead.

Ad Block Plus got nuked by Google, unfortunately. You need root to do this for all apps and on all connection types.

Good on you to take the time to learn.
Short of rooting your phone and installing an ad-blocker, you would have to pay for "pro" versions of apps you use, which often remove ads from the app as part of the upgrade.
MoaAB hands down is the best add blocker! But u need root...
(Mother of all Add Blockers)
Nothing is going to fully block ads without root. Nope. ?
For unrooted try Andblock (not ABP) http://code.google.com/p/andblock/
You need to import a host file (menu > import), and set Port to 8080
Blocks web ads only

So just for browsers you mean? If that's the case you can just use AdBlock Plus extensions/addons for your respective browser.
Adblock (unrooted, side load APK) will still work for WiFi just not on a data connection and needs to be setup as a proxy, or is it just for data? Can't remember.

It’s plugged as ‘Andblock’, yet the app is named ‘Adblock’ – very confusing. And I’m sure it’s intentional, given the similarities with ABP.
Before I rooted my device I used Andblock (Adblock) – it works with 3g/4g, whereas ABP unrooted only works over wifi. Anyway, standalone ABP for Android is riddled with bugs and inconsistencies – brilliant as a FF addon in Windows, might be good as a browser ext. for Android - but if you're unrooted and use a browser that hasn’t got an ABP ext. then you’re buggered.
A device isn’t completely free of ads even with root - the famed MoaAB doesn't block every app ad.

I have VTech Kidibuzz that I want to root to Android... is it possible?

The VTech Kidibuzz is a faux smartphone device that apparently is meant to be a kid's first "smartphone" while still being safe I guess. From what I can gather though, it's just an Android wifi-enabled tablet running some specific VTech stuff on it. I want to try to root it to see if I can flash custom firmware on it. Does anyone know if this would be possible, or if it's done before?
I haven't been able to find a way to access dev mode or any hidden settings, but it does interface with computers via USP or apparently SD card?

You can "enable custom apps" which basically means install the amazon appstore from the "Parents" account -> Device Settings -> Get More Apps but more importantly you can enable unknown sources from More Apps settings and from there you can download an APK Downloader or use the built in web browser to download any app you want. You can get a hidden settings apk and view the normal android settings menus but when I tried to enable developer settings in there it didn't work , I 'm still trying to figure out how to get the Play Store to work properly on it. You can read/write user files over USB. . I'm still ****ing around with it though.
I think it is definitely rootable and easily exploitable, the OS (atleast on my model) was signed using test keys, meaning you can replace any system apk's with your own, I unfortunately cannot test this as curious as I am because the one I am playing around with right now is a Christmas present and I cannot afford to take the risk of bricking/breaking it. I was just trying to get things like Google Play and Hulu working.
