how would you go about unrooting and resetting EVERYTHING? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

so I bought this MyTouch 4g from this guy at my job. He rooted and messed up some things (deleted important files i guess), and as I'm using the phone I get random force closes on certain applications. Turning on the phone takes forever, Loading pop up stays up for about 5 minutes before the homescreen is actually completely loaded. Sense Widgets are gone, when I try to load them, htc.RosieUtility.com has to force close. Email app force closes as well. When I try to recovery boot (Volume + Power), I get a ClockWorkMod screen.. which I am 98% sure is not stock.
He admitted himself he messed it up, so I bought it pretty cheap from him , but is there any way to reset EVERYTHING to factory settings, even though he deleted some things when he rooted and got into the system/app?

I could be wrong but try:
Home > Menu > Settings > Factory Data Reset
Unless you are comfortable with flashing a new ROM to the device.

Your right in thinking clockworkmod is nothing to with stock. But this is good. If he has messed up by deleting important apps and files the easiest way to solve this is to flash a new rom. Head over to the my touch 4g forums find a rom you like the look of download it to your memory card. Boot in to recovery, wipe data, wipe cache, install zip from sdcard and flash your new rom. This should solve all your problems and you will have a clean slate to start from.
I wouldnt worry about unrooting, i have heard of people Paying more for second hand phones that have been rooted. How ever if you did want to take it back to stock im sure there will be a guide in the my touch 4g forums

[Q] Froze Andriod OS in Supermaid, can't boot.

I rooted my phone and replaced all kinds of things and a installed a new launcher, but the startup time was unbearable. I let my friend tinker with it, and from the SuperMaid app, he apparently froze the Android OS (I guess he thought my launcher was an OS) before I had a chance to back anything up with Titanium. When the phone died, it won't of course won't load. It's a Samsung Mesmerize, so I have the the one file from ClockModRecover, and that's it. I tried to restore that file, and it won't. Is my phone bricked? I'm kicking myself for all of this.
Well...did you install clockwork mod recovery? Not the manager app in android, but the actual recovery? If so, did you do a nandroid backup? If you did, restore it. If you never bothered to do a backup but do have cwm recovery, do a factory reset. If no cwm then last thing is boot into normal recovery and try a reset from there. You will likely lose root, and will need to root the phone again, and keep your friend out of your OS.

recovery isn't working
When I tried to restore the nandroid backup, it repeatedly failed saying it couldn't (I can't remember if it was mount or unmount) the system. So I did the factory restore as you suggested, and when I turned on the phone, I received a text message. However, I'm getting a force close message that's preventing me from doing anything: "The application TwLauncher (process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly...") When I click Force close, it just pops right back up, cutting off functionality of the phone.
Ok reboot back into recovery, wipe cache, go to advanced, wipe dalvik, fix permissions, reboot.

didn't work =(
I did all those things and the system repeatedly wouldn't unmount. I had to just go back to Froyo 2.2 with Odin. The good news there is now I can install Ice Cream Sandwich. I figure I can't do too much damage, and if I do, I still have the backup
I said to reboot not restore or flash, but I'm glad you got it all figured out. The fix permissions and caches being wiped was to try to fix the current install, not prep for a new rom or restore. At least I assumed flash or restore since you mentioned system not unmounting which only happens for that.

Soft Brick from official ICS update

So I just got tried to download the official ICS update for the device using kiev and the download and everything went great but when my phone restarted it froze on "updating android: starting applications"
After it was frozen for around 30min I held down the power button to reset it, and it froze at the same point, I reset it again and it froze on the "rethink possible" att load up screen, so I pulled the battery and restarted it to find it freezes on "rethink possible" and that is where it has currently been for the past 10 minutes.
I'm stumped.
You too???
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who's phone keeps freezing and freezing after this update. I've got a feeling we won't be the only ones. I already called AT&T and they directed me to Samsung. To be continued...
Ditto Here
Same for me. My phone was rooted (original ROM) - that make any difference?
Unbricked
This worked for me
Found on forums dot att dot com
Re: Skyrocket upgrade to ICS is frozen
Fixed! The guy at the AT&T store showed me how:
Remove and replace the battery.
Hold the power button and BOTH volume buttons at the same time.
It will boot into Fast Boot mode, which is like a service/diagnostic mode.
In the menu, there will be a reset to factory option.
Select it, confirm.
It will restart. It will take a moment, and then come up factory fresh, with ICS.
Reinstall your apps and you are good to go. My guess is one of the apps we had installed was not ICS compatible; a service or something.
you can read the sticky thread in general section
[HOWTO]:RESTORE:ODIN stock firmware w/sammobile:ROGERS|ATT: GB|ICS
edit: sticky now moved to the dev section
Yeah my cache froze after updating from an ics rom at that. Phone wouldn't clear caches or format or backup / restore. Had to go back to gb with a gimped error back up then flash stock recovery and that cleared my cache. I clear it five times now I do anything. ****ty experience.

[Q] Should I wipe everything after bootlooping?

So here is a quick rundown of what happened:
-DL Beats audio, opened it, it was supposed to restart my phone, but it froze it.
-Could not power off or reset it, had to pull battery
-Was then stuck on the 4G LTE rainbow and would not load. Tried pulling battery nothing.
-Went into recovery mode and tried loading, nothing happened and I read someone say the only way out of it was to wipe everything and start over, so I wiped Data and Cache and Dalvik Cache with Clockwork. Nothing happens.
-Finally I Odin it supposedly back to stock. Hooray I can get into my phone, weird thing is all of my apps are there, email is set up, contacts are there with pics from FB, syncmypix, etc. It even retained the fact that I had disabled the stupid ongoing Wi-Fi notification. Just the homescreens are blank again.
-I never made a CWM backup, I think I made a Titanium backup, I know I used MyBackupRoot (the one that is a life preserver). That being said I thought I wiped everything in CWM. It said it had formatted the internal and external SD.
Question is should I go ahead and try to wipe everything clean again?
Am I going to run into issues using my phone how it is?
Should I back it up and then load a recovery from this or would that be pointless?
Or do I leave it alone and consider myself lucky?
Thank you and by no means am I a developer or anything, just getting back into android after 2 years on iOS and apparently know just enough to get myself into trouble.
If everything is working fine then you sgould be good. You must haved had the restore thing checked or verizon backup crap restored your stuff. When you odin that will flash the file system img so there is no way that your data survived
Did you check the md5 on the beats audio thing before you flashed it? Cause i have ran that fine.

[Q] failed restore/flash bricked phone

the short story- my htc inspire is frozen on white htc startup screen and wont go anywhere.
the long story- i got my htc inspire 4g stock (used) beginning of this summer. it was almost perfect except some annoying apps and features. so i successfully rooted it using advanced ace hack kit. it was great. but the battery life sucked and so did the speed. so i decided to flash to new rom so i can overclock and undervolt. i then backed up my rooted stock rom onto my sd card. i then installed android revolution 7.3 and overclocked to 1.5ghz and undervolted -50. it was great now, battery life was way better and phone was faster. it was almost perfect except one issue- every once in a while, it would randomly just shut down and restart, then get stuck in a bootloop displaying htc white screen then the beats audio, then repeating endlessly until i pull the battery. that solves it until it happens again randomly (not that often but still annoying losing my data) i tried different settings in setcpu and daemon tools and same problem.
i then decided its time to revert to stock rom and try a new rom and see the difference and if i like it more, ill keep it. so i loaded recovery from rom manager (because my power button dont work) and i wiped to factory default and did all the steps of clearing the cache and the dalvik cache, etc it said it did it fine. i clicked install from zip and chose dirty unicorns rom that i found on this site for my phone.
it said it installed without any problems. cool, i clear caches again and reboot.
but this is the wack part: when it restarts, it still loaded android revolution... all the data on internal memory was gone from wiping it and my superuser was gone. (rom manager stayed) i thought that was weird. i tried a couple more times and same thing. and then i put the backup i made of my stock rom before i flashed anything onto my sdcard-> rom manager-> backup.
but when i went to rom manager-> backup, my backup wasnt there. i then went to manage backups and restore. it said no backups found. i then thought maybe it has to do with superuser gone? i plugged in my phone and loaded ace. i noticed it had a load stock rom option on it. awesome, i clicked that, chose first one (htc inspire at&t) and it started doing its thing. but it said it had a problem downloading some package or something? it said it connected to th site fine but kept coming up with that error and a prompt saying "do you want to continue[y/n]" and i type y hit enter and same error. i tried another one but same error. oh well. i went back to menu and chose option 1 for rooting it, it did its thing with no errors. rebooted my phone. except now, its on htc start screen and wont go anywhere. its just forever stuck there. i did figure out just now that since my power button dont work, i could load hboot by taking out battery, and holding volume down while sliding battery in. but it wont go up and down on the menu with the volume keys. since my power button dont work i cant select one anyways but i should still be able to go up or down right?
well thats what happened and i feel like a retard.. if anyone might know whats wrong please help
ok i solved the issue after constant reading. i had to reformat my sdcard to fat32 and put stock pre rooted rom since i still had s-off. then it was just load hboot and it loaded files from sd card automaticly (took a moment, i thought it wasnt going to work) but it said found file (only file on the card now) and then accepted install. now im back to stock pre rooted rom. im so happy i didnt completely ruin my phone <3
im sorry for wasting everyones time. i should have read more before posting, as the thread that helped me solve this was on this site.

[Completed] Zopo ZP820 OS Corrupted-cannot reflash or reset

Ill try to be as descriptive as possible
Zopo ZP820 running 4.2.2
Phone worked fine the other day, went to use it yesterday morning, kept saying all running processes forced quit over and over, all google services, etc.
If i reboot the phone, it keep showing the same 4 Gmail emails, the same 4 text messages. If i go in and physically delete all of the emails and text messages, they are gone. If i reboot the phone, they all come back.
Also went in and uninstalled every single app on phone that was allowable, basically it went back to stock apps, even uninstalled all updates to all google services, etc.
Reboot the phone, everything is back to the way it was, apps and all, and this is after removing the SD card and powering off and rebooting.
Tried to do a factory reset from the settings screen, it reboots into recovery mode, the only options i had were to wipe cache and reset data/cache, when done, i reboot, and yet again it goes back to the same exact way.
It is almost as if the entire phone restores itself every reboot to the same setup.
Also tried using newest SP Flash Tools with 3 different versions of the ROM for my phone, the original stock one, the updated stock one and a custom MIUI one. I go thru the entire process for the two stock ones, it says it formatted and reflashed, but reboot again and it is back to same one that is corrupt.
If i try to use the MIUI one using the recovery option holding power and vol down, when i choose the zip file for the MIUI, it says installation aborted. And what is ieven more odd is that if i reinstall all of the programs or even new apps, if i reboot they are all gone as if they were never installed.
Is there a way that the phone can be totally wiped so that no trace of any files on the phone exist at all? in SP Tools there was an auto format and manual format i did both, but got the same results
Any help would be greatly appreciated
