I just noticed the same thing. First sunny day I used the phone outside and I thought the backlight on the buttons had burned out..

Using power button as Shutter button?

I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong section, or if someone already asked this, but is there a MOD to allow the power button to function as a shutter button for the camera on the Nexus S? I know there's one for the Nexus One. if anybody knows of one, please let me know through PM or email.
Thanks in advance.
I'm also curious about this. If anyone knows please post it here..
Thanks.

I'd like an app like this as well. I found it very awkward taking a picture using the touch screen. Seems pretty stupid to include a camera, and not a physical button for it.
Using the power button would be great, as you won't ever really want to turn off the screen with the camera on anyway.

I agree that it would great to have this as an option, but just as a counter-point: I regularly turn the screen off while using the camera app if I'm in a situation where I want to be able to quickly shoot a few pictures here and there while at a party or something similar.

Not sure if possible, but maybe it can be modified to only act as the shutter button while the camera app is running? I too use the power button regularly for turning off the screen. I am though annoyed having to press a button on the screen to take a pic. Probably the only issue I have with my NS at the moment

im sure this is possible. it was done on the i9k galaxy s model. the question is just when someone will
Hmmm, I wonder if Tasker could do this.
Edit:
It's easy enough to create a profile that does something if the power button is pressed when and only when the camera app is active, but I can't prevent the screen from turning off.
Wouldn't the volume up or down button be a better choice?

Not with Tasker. Tasker can't detect the volume buttons directly.

But it can be done indirectly.

That's a good point. I never thought of that. I mentioned the power button because it seems more convenient. But I like the idea of the volume button better. )

as far as i know there is no dedicated camera buttons like the XT720
but you could try those buttons REMAPing apps that was made for the Galaxy S phones
those should do the trick
I've not tried it personally yet, but i was also getting annoyed about not having a dedicated camera button

Tasker is awesome. The learning curve can be a bit steep, but it's definitely worth the effort. And the price.
With CameraPro app you can make Volume keys to act as a camera shutter very easily. Do it and let me know. If you get what you asked for then don't forget to press the THANKS button. All the best!

But I'm sure by now they figured it out with ICS or the new JB since they asked January 2011

HiddenMenu

For those that aren't aware, kinda cool thing I found when researching what com.lge.hiddenmenu was. From the Optimus 2x thread located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-991449.html
I'd like to stress the following that was mentioned -
Enjoy the vast amount of options and tests in there, and be careful as some are destructive.
I love the torch flashlight and dimming the capacitive buttons..
Well this one isn't so difficult but I though I'd share for those that have not worked it out yet.
The LG Device Test "HiddenMenu" is apparently on all shipping phones and it's simply disabled via removing the menu entry.
To activate you need to create a shortcut to this hidden menu. You can do this with most replacement launchers and apps like BetterCut.
Example using LauncherPro (others will use a similar method):
Long press on home screen
Select Shortcuts
Select Activities
Scroll down to and expand com.lge.hiddenmenu
Select HiddenMenu (first entry)
Enter Shortcut name
Click on shortcut to launch
Hit 'Thanks' below
Also now Logcat app:
As above
Scroll down to and expand LG Debug
Select LG Debug (first entry)
Enter Shortcut name
Click on shortcut to launch
Hit 'Thanks' below
Enjoy the vast amount of options and tests in there, and be careful as some are destructive.
Perhaps Useful:
Dim Capacitive Buttons: Device Test | Touch LED Brightness
Turn on Camera LED: Device Test | Camera Test | Torch Flashlight Preview

Np. There's a lot of stuff in there! I love reducing battery usage with the menu lights. Got it turned all the way down. Every little bit helps!
For ADW Launcher, it is as follows:
Long press on homescreen
Select "Custom shortcut"
Select "Pick your activity"
Select "Activites"
Then it's the same as the OP described above. Seems to be a bit more menu work to get to it through ADW lol

You are awesome for bringing this to my attention. I've been searching for a way to dim the hard-key backlights! Only wish this was available on the Vibrant. The G2x isn't nearly as bad but it certain wasn't much better stock! =)

Do you know what the "destructive" menus are? There are a ton of menus/sub-folders in that hidden menu... I would hate to mess with the wrong thing.
Have any of you heard of more tech-y, back end stuff that might be worth tweaking with this? Most of the sub-folders are just acronyms that I have no clue about. It would be cool if an engineer checked it out and looked for some diamonds in the rough!
Anyone tweak with the speaker settings? My ringtones are really soft compared to my mt4g, I practically have to turn it up all the way..

are you talking about the earpiece speaker? because I was referring to the speakerphone...come to think of it I'm not sure if the option affects the earpiece or speakerphone? I agree the earpiece speaker is fine but actually the speakerphone is very low, many reviews have pointed this out. I used to be able to play music on my blackberry bold 9700 and listen while I was in the shower but this phone is far from loud enough to do that

Nexus S 4G: Button Backlight Control

Im wondering if anyone had found a way to disable the capacitive button backlighting similar to the way ledhacks works on the evo.
When I am in low light conditions, the buttons actually end up being brighter than my settings in aldiko.
I have tried a few apps off the market, but nothing seems to be working.

Photos look terrible in gallery.

So I'm using the factory camera and gallery, has anyone noticed how the display turns to crap when you view pictures? The color tone completely drops and makes the photos look dark and terrible. Is there a setting I may have turned on (or off)? Or is there something third party I should use perhaps?
Because when I view the photos on the PC using my nice HD display, its really not as bad as it looks on the phone.

I think it could be just the app itself and how it was written. But also adjusting the brightness can usually help. One reason I hate the pentile display. > <

I think it is being caused by 2 things.
1. Automatic brightness.
2. Settings -> Display -> Auto adjust screen power. (Although I thought this setting never worked, it sounds like the exact problem you're having)
I just use a brightness widget and a scroll of the top status bar to adjust my brightness all the time. The automatic brightness is pretty much unusable because I find it too dark most of the time.

Turn auto brightness off, this is the main reason I turned mine off. It will usually turn it to the lowest brightness in galleries and looks like ****. Auto brightness is garbage from the factory. There's suppose to be a better mod that checks nearly 100 times a sec and uses less power but I been too lazy to ask my friend for the name of it lol.

I'm just sharing it with the community. .
I reckon, that's the closest thing we can reach without the kernel level access/modification. .
Good things in life are not for free. . what it implies in this particular case that the app would add to your battery discharge. . But, as I mentioned earlier-that's the closest thing we can reach without the kernel level access/modification. .
What this app does it, make all pixels go black (AMOLED screens switches off the pixels to show Black) therefore, ensuring that there's minimal battery consumption. .
This means that those who think that the app will function without having any effect on Battery-this app ain't meant for you. .
For their kind info-even the nativly supported devices use battery to provide the phone with this feature so please don't make a fuss about this app using battery
& to those that consider that it promotes laziness-I ask. . Really? :silly:

+ you can use Gesture Navigation & add a double tap to sleep by using Gravity Box mod action shortcut
this way you won't be required to focus your double tap on a small section of the screen unless you want to put the phone to sleep while being in an app
I have used these 2 mods in conjunction to have Power Menu from Left slide in Notification Panel
I change volume by sliding left/right over the status bar
I use Notification Toggle to bring me to Home Screen without pressing the hardware button & also to open the recent apps' list without long pressing the hardware home button
I use Ultimate Smart Cover (its an app & not a mod) to wake up my phone without needing to touch hardware buttons :victory:
