DLNA Media Server on Android and WM

Ok, so you might now be able to do it quite yet, but a team of developers is working hard to get a final product out (maybe September!) which will allow you to turn your Android or WM phone into a DLNA Media Server.
If you're not familiar with DLNA, the standard allows you to stream media content to other compatible electronic devices over wifi. The PS3 can do this with your video, music, and pictures from your PC.
Check out the link. There's a video that shows it working on a WM device, but the developers say it's working on Android already. can't wait for it to be released!

Does the Samsung Omnia DLNA server work on other devices?
Hi! I own an Omnia and Samsung nicely provided us with a DLNA server out of the box. A user at Modaco (Sector) has kindly pulled it out:
Connected Home - http://www.mediafire.com/?mzqzembzd0j
Not sure if it will work on other devices, but it works well on the Omnia!
it does not work on HD2
Check this Android DLNA Server
Check iMediaShare Android DLNA Server - works like a charm
It comes from Omnia Lite....

Android app DNLA Client???

Hello. I fount, that I can serve the media content from android phone through Twonky server to my PC. But I want retrograde app - the android DNLA media CLIENT - to play the streamed video or audio on my Android phone - from my PC media library.
Any idea?
Thanx!!!

I don't know much about Android...
...but I'm interested in getting an android phone, probably the HTC Desire.
Can't you just link your phone into your home network, like I've done with my WM6.5 phone? That way, you can just browse to the relevant media folder on your network from your phone and play the file via the relevant app on your phone. I do that for video and music on my WM phone.
Or does Android not allow you to link into a PC network?
Linking to a PC network over SMB/CIFS is not straightforward AFAIK:
You can browse and copy files with applications such as ES File Explorer, but that is not integrated into the file system for all applications. And You can use xyflash to stream from the network using certain protocols such as http and ftp, but not in a very user friendly way.
I'd love to see something being able to browse and stream using DNLA/UPNP or mount a SMB path in the android file system, but I haven't seen it yet. Though the latter may be possible if you device is rooted, I haven't checked that out...
Are you looking for something like AndroMote, or to go the other way around?

Just saw this post; I've been using this for a while (originally just to test it) it works well with my Buffalo Linkstation's Media server.
As I can see, there is no news about video dnla app client - only audio is possible now :/

Not necessarily.... If you have a UPnP server on your PC (TVersity, Playon, etc...) you can use PlugPlayer (plugplayer . com) as your client...
I've spent some time recently to look for a UPnP stack solution for android, so perhaps my exploration can be of use.
I found out that EyeconTroller is a nice media renderer. I only tested audio but EyeconTroller is supposed to handle videos as well.
I've tested it with two android devices: the first one runs iMediashare (media server), the second one runs EML UPnP-AV Controlpoint to act as a remote controller, and EyeconTroller runs on both devices. Using EML I was able to stream from iMediashare to EyeconTroller on both devices.
Next step is to stream from my linux box, but i don't expect any issue here (granted it is on the same subnet, which it is not for now), considering that EML discovered the iMediashare and all EyeconTroller instances without problem.
Note that for now EyeconTroller is free but might not always be (see eyecontec site).
I have a lcd tv samsung C550, they have dlna with name 'allshare', they can display music, photos and messages, but I think this only work with galaxy S, would be nice if any android phone can send text message to tv.
skifta is a great dlna client
i search for a audio only dlna client, they are all audio and video and i just want a small case to plug to my audio mixer.. without any drive i wan't to stream music directly from my phone as i can do on my tv with any NAS and skifta.

DLNA player for Android?

Ok, I use TVersity/PS3 Media Server to share my media to my TV/PS3/360 for viewing on the TV, and now i'm using PlayON to eventually replace it.
I was wondering if there is an app that anyone knows of for Android that will play DLNA shared content (over 3G/Wifi)
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated
now i just have to find a set of TV cables for my Incredible
Twonky works for PS3 but not 360.
sorry, i should have clarified, I want to be able to see my media server content on my phone, not from my phone to my PS3/360.
Thanks though, i may have to look that server up
I think I recall reading the Samsung Galaxy S will include a DLNA client and server app.
simply google samsung dlna, there was a posting on phandroid about it. (i would post the link but new account, first post, etc)

While I have DLNA on my Samsung TV, every search i did for the DLNA component of Galaxy S says sharing to the living room, not the phone.
I need it to be from the PC server to the phone via DLNA, not the other way around
Thanks for the info though, didn't know Samsung was making an app for Android
i hope to find one
one thing i found interesting while searching through the list of managed applications on my Incredible was, I found that theres an application similar to the one on Windows Mobile by HTC called "Streaming Media Player by HTC" but i can't find anywhere to run the application, its like its "hidden"

Free player that works on Galaxy tab
Try Vplayer (free) that was just released on the market. If your server or NAS has basic http viewer (Twonky or otherwise) you can navigate to your media files through a browser and long click on your file and select vplayer as your preferred player. This has worked flawlessly on my galaxy tab.
Also if you have access to the pay market I've seen that Plug player was just released that should be able to playback videos straight of the server without the need for browser access.
This was the last thing my tab wasn't able to do so now it's complete and perfect..
supply this link for you: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/dlna+player
this site lists dlna player for android, hope you can get you want
Hey I know what you're looking for, however no great solution for Android yet, the following is a list of programs which will work, but none are perfect, a lot have some features not all, and 3g streaming is sketchy, anyway check em out see if any work for you.
Qloud video
RedDONUT
PLEX
MIRAGE
VLC Remote
I am still hoping airvideo will someday become available for android, this is the perfect app for this in iOS
Look up upnplay on the market. I've been using it for a couple months now and it works perfectly for me.

That app is used to watch videos through the browser such as Skyfire in Android mode rather than Desktop mode.

they have a dlna player on the Droid X. i might be able to pull it from it tomorrow. you can see if it works from that.
A lot of these streaming bundles are a specific server and client pair...
I installed a generic DLNA server - TVersity and then installed one of the many DLNA browser/player apps from the market.. My Samsung Charge already has one on it - allshare..
On my tablet I settled on bubbleUPNP. It allows me to browse the video audio etc.. and play the media on the media player on the my choice - MXVideo..
No specific player/server combination is needed.

Try Skifta.
PLEX Update
PLEX has just been updated and the latest server version and client allow you to stream all your media to your phone via 3G or WIfI, best of all, all you have to do is login to your account on the server and on the phone and it just works. I have been waiting for an app to do this on Android for a long time, PLEX is now my number one program on my phone.
How is plex compared to emit?

watch on tv what's on the phone's screen
hi guys,
is there any way to stream through a dlna server what is showing on the phone screen? it would be nice to sit in front of my tv and surf the internet on a 56" screen instead of a 4" screen.
Another option
I set up my videos folder on my HTPC as a network share, and installed esfilexplorer and mxvideo apps. I just connected via wifi in esFileExplorer and select videos and play them back with MxVideo works great. I am doing this on a Lenovo IdeaPad K1.
I also run tversity and can connect to htpc via web interface if I am not on home network, works but web interface is pretty basic and load times can be long on large files.

Bubble is great and it controls the volume on my tv yaaaaaay
Skifta is probably the best for DLNA client/server on Droid that is free (if you want you can setup their PC server for playing the media on your comp anywhere via 3G/WiFi even at a friends and if you want you can even remote access your home DLNA server from your friends house then use your Droid as a bridge to any DLNA client on that wifi network. It's pretty cool.
If you're a TVersity fan/lover, just enable web access and use their flash or mobile relay interface to watch over 3G or Wifi (but you'll need a streaming player like MX Video or alike to watch remotely instead of downloading then watching).
I myself use Skifta only on my phone and combine TVersity on my PC with web portal activated and MX Video to watch everything.
(Twonky is good if you have an Internet TV but costs money and their help desk is ****).

[Q] DLNA / connected Media still available in ICS semse 3.6 same or improved

Hello,
A very specific question to those who have the cool ICS with 3.6 sense running
Is the "Connected media" app by HTC is still there ? Is it improved or still the same.
Specifically can it now take content from server and send to another DLNA media app ( TV/XBMC/WD play etc._)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUK-E2kosNU
The reason I am asking is in previous 2.3.4 with sense 3.0 i had to use Skifta or imedia share to shift content from server /pc to TV
The HTC app could send content only from the selection of media already on the phone
LG does a better job of this with there smartshare and samsung is finally getting into the game with there ALLshare app.

Still DLNA trouble

Hi all,
Recently i created a thread about some remote connections that were not really working out that well on the TF300..
Nobody gave me a response so i try it again ..
Somehow remote connections wont work properly on the TF300.
Unified remote and DLNA features wont work. Sometimes i can see my laptop and stream music to it but an hour later i have to reboot, restart apps, enable wifi disable, whatever to get it to work.
This problem is also in the unified remote app.
Now this can't be a problem on the tablet because my dad, with exactly the same tablet got exactly the same problems..
Come on XDA help me
Few things first....
My net app of Asus is crap... use bubble upnp
Don't use WiFi direct... it is not supported yet in jelly bean

So what do you think is the best app for DLNA playback ?
Bubble upnp

Upnplay : free from the market. Lousy interface, but fast and reliable. Has ability to have unlimited cache (=available memory) to load song and video listings.
I also often use J River Media Center (paid windows app) combined with Gizmo (free on market) on Android. That's the only solution which works fast enough with a very large (>100.000 songs) music collection. You need to leave your pc on and have JRiver running though, but it works great for all music, video & pictures that you manage on the pc through JRiver. Really, really fast.
