[Q] Wifi XOOM 3.2 boot loop help!

First off, I have done a search and read dozens of threads, none of which solved my problem...
I have a wifi xoom, which I rooted many months ago without any problems. Recently updated to 3.2 like a month ago or so. I have not made ANY changes within the last month, and the tablet has been working perfectly.
A few days ago, I left the tablet to charge. Once charging was complete, I turned it on and its stuck on the boot animation. I just keeps playing over and over again, I've let it sit for 10+ minutes, with nothing happening...
I tried removing the SD card then rebooting, and its the same result....
Please help! If need be, I can go back and look up all the exact steps I've done to root and get it to where it is today. Like I said though, it has been working perfectly, and I have not made any new changes in at least a month... I don't see why this would happen all of a sudden...

Have you tried to reinstall firmware?

No need to panic.
When you rooted, did you install CWM Recovery, and if so, do you have a recent nandroid backup? Have you tried rebooting into recovery?
What steps have you followed to get out of your bootloop?

Yes, I have Clockword Mod Recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c 100611-1150
Upon attempting a restore everything appears to work properly until the end when it gets to restoring data, I get an error, regardless of which restore image I use(I tried all the ones I have). It reads as follows:
"Restoring data...
Error removing /data/data/com.noshufou.android.su/cacheError while formatting /data!"
I also attempted a clean wipe/factory reset with similar unsuccessful results. I get an error during formatting data, which reads:
"Formatting /data...
Error removing /data/data/com.noshufou.android.su/cacheFormatting /cache..."
The rest of the formatting appears to run successful for /sd-ext and /sdcard

Have you manually tried to format the system, cache and data? This can be done from the advanced menu.

Can you please provide me with more detailed instructions?
From the advanced menu I see:
Reboot Recovery
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Report Error
Key Test
Partition SD Card
Fix Permissions

Sorry, we're forgot talking about Cwm. It's under mounts and storage.

Still the same result as before... I went to mounts and storage > format /data
"Formatting /data...
Error removing /data/data/com.noshufou.android.su/cacheError formatting /data!"

Try format system first then data and cache.

My suggestion would be to go back to stock and then re-root. You can find the stock download on the Moto Dev home page.

+1. Restocking link. MOTODEV > Produ / Software http:/.ly/sQtpKQ bit cts > Device. Then use universal root method reroot.

Thanks everyone! I was hoping I would be able to fix it without going back to stock, but since I was unable to I just went that route.
Going stock worked, and I am back to where I was before, so thank you for the advice! In case anyone else may have this problem, this is what I did:

Reboot loop after booting

Can anyone suggest a troubleshooting method without a factory reset. This is what I am experiencing:
Everytime I reboot the Sensation will boot up and go through the normal process. About 3 or 4 minutes it will just reboot. Often when this happens I note that I don't have to re-enter my pin (a clue?). This rebooting will go on repeatedly but eventually (if I leave the phone alone) I will at some point end up with the phone up and running.
There are no random reboots, it is only this situation that causes the problem and it's obviously some point 3 or 4 mins into the process that is causing the problem.
I've noticed that if I reboot to recovery and then select reboot from there it is usually successful.
I am s/off via wire trick method, and rooted. recovery is 4 ext and I am still on stock rom.
I'd like to find out what is happening at the point of the reboot, is there a good way to do this?

boot into recovery and wipe dalvik cache n then do a normal reboot n check wad happens
you can also make a nandroid backup n install a custom and check wheather the problem exisit by doing backup ull not loose ur data n u can return to stock again just by restoring the backup ... try and let me know

Hi,
Have you installed a new ROM recently?
Did you fully wipe the phone before you did this?
If not,try re-installing the ROM you are on.
No wipes.
You will not lose settings or data.

What I noticed is that the problem didn't exist when rebooting from ADB or fastboot either.
Anyway your suggestion so far looks promising. I've tried a normal restart from the phone and a battery change both of which would usually end up with the rebooting problem. Both of these tests haven't caused it so I'll keep testing but thanks for the suggestion.
What is does the Dalvik cache do and how would this have caused this kind of problem? I'm interested in the whys. The problem appeared soon after installing a couple of things as I remember and I did try to backtrack without much success.

No I've not installed any Roms, I'm on stock.

Revived thread - as it's happening again
I'd like to revive this thread - perhaps I should post a new one but since it's here ...
This problem has returned with a vengeance. It took me about 3 hours of fighting to get this phone to stop rebooting. It seems clearing the dalvik cache isn't a solution anymore (if it was in the first place).
What I've observed is that if I take the sd card out it doesn't reboot. When the card is in I have several shortcuts on one of my home screens which often will not refresh for ages (ie. android icons for anything moved to sd card). When the icons start to appear the reboot will happen shortly after. All the time I'm waiting for this to happen the phone is very sluggish.
I don't think this is an incompatible sd card but maybe it is, however, if I can get this to stop rebooting then all is ok till I attempt another reboot.
Ideally I'd like to track this down to find out if there is an app which is misbehaving. Are there any tools that can help me do that.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Backup all your data and do a factory reset
This problem might be due to 3rd party app as you phone without sd card dosent reboots
Might be some of ur app is seriously miss-behaving
After a factory rest install each app n check ( I know it's time consuming)

Yeah hoped to avoid that for 2 reasons. 1) It's a bummer 2) I won't know what the problem was / is.
I did do a factory reset after backing up data via my recovery. It seemed to be ok but I had nothing on SD at that point. I loaded a couple of apps and moved them to sd and it still didn't happen. The I restored the data and it was back to the same problem.
I may have to go with your suggestion but I'm going to lose some data as I can't back up selectively (so it seems).
Is there a logger I can use that starts at reboot. If I could find out exactly what it's doing when it decides to reboot I might nail the app?

to find the problematic app might go tough you will have to install each and every app and check after that
try installing all the trustworthy apps before eg. file manager,fb,twitter,gmail etc then check once again ,after that install single app at a time

Help! Can't format my Xoom.

Hello there, I have a huge issue with my Motorola Xoom.
I ran the #156 TeamEOS 4.2 Nightly Rom for my European 3G Xoom when all of a sudden my tablet started acting really weird.
Apps were crashing, Google Play wasn't working, Browser as well, and so on.
I decided to do a hard reset, formatting cache, Dalvik Cache, Hard Reset...but nothing was cancelled. As soon as i rebooted my device, everything was back the way it was with the same issues. I noticed my tablet was costantly updating the same apps and even if I updated them the following reboot they were back re-updating themselves.
I have no idea what to do, I tried everything, including RSD Lite. Nothing.
Can somebody help me figuring out what to do and how to at least format my Xoom completely so that I can re-install my rom and then re-install the apps?

I would boot into recovery and do a full wipe the reflash the rom a gapps. you should be good to go.

No can do, sorry. What's weird is that even when I go to change the performance settings on the rom, to overclock it more or less, the changes are not recorded. I can set whatever I want but it doesn't change it. It's like the tablet is in a loop, always stuck doing the same things, charging the same rom, the same settings. I really don't know what to do, I don't want to throw it away but I don't know how to solve it.

Which xoom do you have? We can always flash the stock img with fastboot to restore it. It will be back to complete stock.
Can you get into recovery at all by powering off then press the power button wait till 3 sec's after the logo appears and press volume down. You will see android recovery at the top press vol up to select. If you can and you have a backup restore it. If you use an external sd card you can load a rom on to it and flash it in recovery.

this is the same exact problem i'm having. I cannot get my xoom to reset. It always goes back to where it was before.

Sounds like your data has gotten corrupted somehow. You can take the boot.img out of whatever Custom ROM ur using, and via terminal -
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot

I'm not using any custom roms. I'm using factory settings for almost everything.... also i don't know how to use terminal

I have the same problem.
The Xoom is a european with android 3.1 kernel version 2.6.36 and build H.6.3-25-9 <- this i dont understand but i think that is no correct.
I try flash the H.6.1-38-1_Retail_Europe version, all the process finish ok, but when i restart the tablet everything continues as before.
I not know what else to do, Heeeelp.

(Just wrote a detailed post and when I went to post, it said I wasn't logged in and erased it...will give a quick run down and can supply more detail where needed as I work through fixing my phone)
Stuck on the white htc splash screen is my most recent problem. Sometimes it gets by that but then boots into recovery. I think bananagranola has the solution in their sig to flash a boot.img. and think I'm comfortable with how to do that, just need to find that file (in the ROM zip?)
What led up to this.
Successfully unlocked and flashed to CM7 back in late Jan/early Feb.
Started experiencing random freezing about two weeks ago.
A week later (last weekend) flashed Jellybean (R10). Worked great for a couple hours then started having the same random freezes.
If things froze I'd have to remove the battery and reboot. After a day or two of this though it'd get to the point that even that would leave me on a frozen jellybean boot animation. So I'd go and factory/data reset in CWM Recovery, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik then reflash the ROM. and I'd be good for a little while more.
Tried flashing back to CM7 but Recovery didn't like the file (it has a good MD5 when checked) Had tried my restore point from early Feb before to no avail, so decided this morning to try other restore points from the last few weeks, right before and after switching to JellyBean. They got further, the first step is something with boot then something with system. It failed on the system part. OK...so I wiped and reflashed jellybean again, and now I am to my splash screen freezes.
I should have asked for help much earlier (lesson learned!) but here I am asking now...what's the first step.
Do I test out and see if I hang on the splash screen again. I haven't turned the phone on in about an hour. Worried of screwing it up more.

TL;DR Believe I'm stuck on splash screen and know solution to that. Have had phone flashed with new ROM with no prob for months, recently freezing, regardless of ROM. Hoping for advice on getting things working again, starting with whether fixing the splash screen thing first is where to start

Seems I fixed the issue with the splash screen. Booted into recovery and reflashed the Jellytime ROM.
Got all the way into Android. after a few minutes I rebooted into recovery and loaded the gapps. Rebooted, it updated apps (not downloading, the popup that says it updates) and was setting up my account when it froze again as I entered a wifi password. Pulled the battery and tried again, got through that and all the way to the lock screen. froze shortly after that.
Now when I reboot, it locks on the boot animation. The Jellytime screen flashes the brightness as few times as things are loading. after the 5th or 6th flash it just sits there frozen.
a new SD card is in the mail, so I may post again when that arrives to see what I can do with an almost clean slate.

I'm wiping data/factory reset and cache as well as the dalvik cache.
The steps to flashing a ROM by sashank at link mention to format /boot and /system. I didn't specifically do those...but don't see the option for /boot in any menus I've checked.
A week or so ago I was beginning to suspect there was an issue with the memory but I never found the right search terms to find out how to do a memtest if that's what would have found any problems. Yesterday I did come across some discussion of a corrupt partition/bad chips in some HTC devices. I followed the directions there and through adb ran dmesg | grep mmc0 and the output was similar to the 'normal' one given and showed none of the messages they claimed to indicate a bad chip.
I'm not too concerned with any data from the phone...I backed all that up long ago and the rest restores from my google account. So if I getting things running would normally raise concerns of lost data, that's not an issue for me.

Wanted to update here before trying to start a new thread and clogging up the board. The title of this thread is not up to date though.
I can hboot just fine and boot into recovery just fine. My phone is unlocked and rooted, ENG S-OFF from when I used AAHK quite a while ago.
When trying to navigate from menu to menu in Recovery I will get the following error messages (best I remember from last time I was in there, I've let the phone be for the last 2-3 days now)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
This doesn't show up at first though, only after I do a Wipe Data/Factory Reset. And if I understand correctly, that wipes /cache so maybe that's causing these errors?
Anyway, after wiping the dalvik cache I can flash a ROM, I've been using Jellytime, I haven't been able to rollback to CM7, not sure why not.
Jellytime will run though...at first! the first couple of boots I can get in and get through registering my google account and have it begin restoring apps if i make that selection. The time I have to work on the phone before it freezes gets shorter and shorter though. I have to remove the battery to get it to reboot. Eventually I am left with the phone hung during the boot animation. I've left it for over an hour before...it's definitely hung there.
So my reading leads me to believe corrupt partitions. I'm not finding a lot on what I should do to reformat and maybe repartition or whatever I may need to do to recover a functioning phone. I don't care about any data on the phone. I just want to get things working again. I ended up getting a new SD card during all this that arrived earlier. If I can get my phone working, I'd prefer to use that from here on out too. I can use the adb in recovery mode just fine if that's necessary to rejigger things to work.
Can anyone help reset my partitions, if that's what this issue seems to be? If not...any ideas?

wipe data/factory resent
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache
unless there's more I can do.

OK, I'll give this a try. The issue with the freezing is why I moved from CM7 though (which had been stable for four months) so it's reproduced itself in different ROMS. I'll post back once I give this a try. Thanks.

I gave Android Revolution a shot. During the flash it gave a message which might also be why I wasn't able to flash back to CM7. The MD5 did verify.

When I went to reboot, I ended up in Jellytime. Of course I had to sign back in to google apps and those things were reset from the dalvik wipe. Shortly there after the phone froze.
On reboot I tried a logcat. Didn't get it right from the start (you can send the command during the boot animation if I read correctly) but captured the failure of things. It's back around the 09:02 portion of the log. To my eyes it looks similar to others I've collected. Especially the message

though I haven't been able to figure out much about that, or identify what it is before that that could give another clue as to what is screwy since that's maybe (Probably?) related to the flashing issues.

Galaxy sm-j700h stuck in safe mode

Wokeup this morning and decided to restart my phone as i usually do every morning, but after the restart the phone has remained in safe mode since then. I have tried restarting the phone several times to no avail.
I believe phone has been rooted about 2 years ago or so. I dunno what kind of recovery im running also.
I am still running 5.1.1
J700HXXU1AOG6 (baseband version)
LMY48B.J700HXXU1AOI3 (build number)
Please any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated

Just realized the volume down button is not working(clicks but doesnt lower the volume). So im guessing this is what makes it enter safe mode all the time

Well im not too sure, but when i was factory resetting the phone some blue/dark screen showed with TEAM WIN underneath it

You have backups ?
What kind of ROM are you using ?
Anyways best is gonna be download any rom and wipe system, data, cache, dalvik...then flash it.
If you don't have backup and you're on stock then just download the firmware from Sammobile and then flash it via Odin, remember don't factory reset, else your all data will be wiped out.
Then start your phone, take a backup of the things you'll need and then reset and flash it again.
And if you're on a custom ROM and you don't have backups then flash the ROM on your recovery again without wiping anything. Restart your device then, you'll see your datas intact, then take a backup but most likely you'll see a lot of force stops of several apps while in this process. Then complete by flashing it again after wiping data system cache dalvik.

No, i dont have any backups(most things were saved on SD card)
I believe its stock rom. The only thing i remember doing is rooting the phone long time ago when i got it.
I just realized that the volume down button is not functioning(clicks in but doesnt lower the volume) and i believe this is where the issue is as the volume down activates the safe mode feature
Im still gonna flash the phone none the less cos im still on older android and i hope it works

That volume down button is broken, stuck ON. Get it fixed.

Will be taking the phone for repairs by Monday and will drop a feedback on how that goes

Fixed the volume down button and the phone is back to normal now.
Time to close this thread and go search on how to root the 6.0.1
