Mock Honeycomb lockscreen for any phone! - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

First post on this site, so bear with how horribly round-about this actually is.
Examples are attached, as I can't post outside links, even to images.
Introduction:
Instead of flashing the honeycomb lockscreen to my phone, I decided to set out and create a suitable alternative. I didn't want to dig too deep into my Evo, but I still wanted something that looks good and works. Thankfully, I found a fantastic app that pretty much allows me to do just that already: LockBot.
Many of you may know of LockBot already, but some don't, so here's the basics: it's a free replacement for your lockscreen that allows you to customize it beyond compare. As well, it allows you to use the lockscreens of many other ROMs (Eclair, Hero, Galaxy, among the names) as a basis. With this in mind, it allows you to modify almost everything, all while being free. Did I mention it's completely free? So let's dig in.
Instructions:
First step, download the zip file attached to this post that contains the images you'll need to use in this project. Upload these images onto your phone's SD card in a new directory. You obviously only need to upload the background you wish to use, the lock icon, and the "blank.png" file. Do not upload the .psd file or the "demo" files, as they won't do you any good there.
Then, install LockBot on your phone (I would link to it, but as I'm a new user, I can't post outside links).
With LockBot open, click "New Theme". Select "Eclair" from the menu (if you bought the paid application you can select Galaxy for a more realistic experience).
Hit "Menu" up in the top right corner of the screen. Change your background to be that of your selected style (if you chose to use the Eclair lockscreen, select "eclair-bg.png").
Select "Menu" again to edit the clock. Select digital, and then tap on the clock itself to edit it. Select "Hide Clock Background" to remove that ugly grey line.
Tap the clock again and this time choose "edit clock". On the first dropdown under "Date Font" select the option you want. I chose "Sunday, February 20", for example. After you have selected the correct date format, hit your phone's back button to get out of the menu.
Tap "Menu" again and select "Style". Click your style once again to confirm what you want to go with, and then tap on the slide bar. Click "Change Unlock ICON" and change it to the lock.png file included in the zip folder.
Before you change the Slider Background, make sure you click "Move Slider" and align the lock icon with the circle on the background. Be sure to keep it a little below the correct placement. For some reason, LockBot isn't great on exact placement for this one feature. You can adjust for it, however.
After you have moved the unlock icon, change every other icon to the "blank.png" file, including the slider background itself.
When you are done, hit menu and then save. Your new theme will be in the "My Themes" section of the app. This is where you have to select which lockscreen you want to see...
Hit your phone's menu button to bring up the "Playlist" option. Select it. From here, uncheck every theme except for your new theme. If you don't do this step, it will randomly select between all of the other themes to display when you turn your phone on.
Hit the back button to get out of the menu.
You are almost done! Right now, when you unlock your phone, you get a vibration. If you wish to edit that or remove it completely, hit your phone's back button until you get to the app's main menu. Hit your phone's menu button and select "Config". Select "Vibrate" and select your preference.
Now you are done.
To revert these changes, simply uninstall the app and delete the folder of images from your SD card. Unistalling the app will give you your stock lockscreen back.
Known Issues:
- The clock doesn't have the correct font. This can be fixed by using a live wallpaper for your background. I don't have one, but it can be quickly and simply created.
- Once in a rare while the lockscreen will skip right to the home screen. This all depends on how much RAM your phone has free at that moment, but this application doesn't use much at all. As well, it may take a couple seconds after your phone has been put to sleep before the lockscreen will come back. Quickly hitting the sleep button twice might just skip the lockscreen all together. Give it a couple seconds of sleep to realize it needs to launch the lockscreen.
- Using the Eclair lockscreen, the lock icon can only go in one direction or the other, not in a free motion like the real Honeycomb lockscreen. This is kind of solved by using the Galaxy version of the lockscreen Even then, however, if you use the standard clock (instead of using a live wallpaper), it drags the clock along with the lock icon. Other than that, the Galaxy option works flawlessly, as if it really were Honeycomb. Please note: the Galaxy option works perfectly if you use a live wallpaper for the clock! This is the closest we can get to the Honeycomb lock screen with this method. It does cost money for the paid app to use this option, however.
If anybody can create a live wallpaper, much in the same nature as the "wp_clock_light" from the Market, please contact me or leave a post here. Creating a live wallpaper with the correct font would mean that this project can be completely authentic.
Also, one last note: in the zip file, I have included the .psd of the images. The original size for the background image is 513x855 simply to get around some random (and odd) limits that the developer of the app put in. You can use the "city_wallpaper.jpg" file to create a background image of any size. This will allow you to use this method on any phone you want. Obviously, this is intended for the Evo primarily because that's the phone I own, and it's the only phone I have access to. This works on any 2.2+, as far as I know. If the app works with your phone, then this method works, too. I'm pretty sure this doesn't require a root, but I'm not the author of the app, I simply used this as the quickest, easiest method of getting what I wanted: the Honeycomb lockscreen. If you have any ports you'd like to include, please post here with the background image files attached. Thanks!

sweet thread im loving the sweet honeycomb lol
here is a link to that app
lockbot
i would provide a pro apk but i don't wanna support piracy

This is fantastic! Great work! I wanted this lock screen the moment I saw it and this is a great alternative! Thank you.

how would you make the wallpaper a live wallpaper?

Download of attachment stops at like 60kb

Doesn*t work for GalaxyTAB and doesn't support Landscape Mode for me..
Doesn't give the feeling of Honeycomb to me :/

Ok, I'm at a loss. I downloaded Pro so I could utilize the Galaxy option, and for the life of me, I can't get my lockscreen to look like the screenshots... How did you manage to get the lock icon and the so?derived background to line up????

My clock moves also...

Wow, didn't realize I was getting hits on this thread. Like I said in the OP, you can select the "style" from the top right, hit the type of style you want, and select to move the slide around from the menu (select "move slider"). You must use the appropriate background, however.
Honda, you are correct that there is no landscape mode. That is a limitation if the app, unfortunately. As well, you will gave to use the OSD file I provided to create a larger background for the tab. This was designed for phones, not tablets. You are more than welcome to use it on the tab, but you will have to do some extra work for it.
One last note: when I first created this thread, I submitted my work to the developer to be added to the gallery. Now, you can simply launch the app, go to the gallery, hit the "Eclair" tab, scroll to February 20th, and select the one entitled "Honeycomb by Mark". I see someone already took my background and work and tried submitting a Galaxy version, but it is horribly buggy, and the developer hasn't added my Galaxy version to the gallery. The Eclair version I submits works fine, however. You can download that I'd you have the Pro version of the app (the free version is unable to download themes).
Let me know it anyone is having any other problems, I would be more than happy to try and help you.

i made something like this today on iphone theme.

EvoShift
Works on the EvoShift from Sprint.
Only issue being the stock HTC Lock Screen still appears once in a while and couple of clicks for the sleep button will take it out but it will show up once again later....there is no way to disable it.
Mine's a non-rooted evoshift.

going to try this out now, just going to install lockbot pro the legal way and then put this honeycomb lockscreen on my desire z

when he says you would need a live wallpaper i think he means a live wallpaper that has a a live clock and the wallpaper...well thats what i think.

Just a slight update... my walkthrough has been spotted and picked up on AndroidNG, and that article is the #1 Google search result when you search for "Android Honeycomb Lockscreen"!!!! This is huge for me, and I'm excited. Squeeeee!
Sorry. That is all.
Note: Again, can't post links because of my low post count, even though my guide has helped a lot of people, and has been proven to be useful for those that want the Honeycomb Lockscreen without rooting their phones... strange world we live in. Just Google "Android Honeycomb Lockscreen" and click the first link. I am "Method I".
Edit: Yes, the live wallpaper of the clock is only necessary if you want the Honeycomb font for the clock itself. If you don't care about the font, you don't need it. As of right now, I don't think there's a Honeycomb clock live wallpaper, but I don't know enough to make one. Wish I did. As for the issues with the app itself: yes, there are some bugs, and it occasionally hiccups and shows you the stock lockscreen. This is just the nature of the beast when it comes to this app. Bugs happen, but this is the closest we can get to perfect for now.
Thanks again for reading and trying this method out, I appreciate all the great responses!

would love to try.. but it seems a little daunting.. scared me off for now

It really isn't. Basically: download the zip, put the images you want on your phone, download LockBot and place the images and parts as you want. Easy enough.

Just so I'm sure I've done everything correctly: when the phone first boots, I see the default (system) lock screen, not the LockBot version. Is there any way around that?
Other than this one (relatively minor) issue, it's fantastic - thank you very much!

Unfortunately, Google has set a five second lock out for apps once a button is hit and the device being turned on. In those five seconds, nothing can be run. Some security measure our something, I don't pretend to know what it means, but it is supposedly there. That is, scouring to the developer, the reason for it. The solution: give your phone five seconds after hitting a button and turning the phone on again. Good luck!

Wow! Thanks... it really works for my Motorola Milestone.

Hey guys, I just wanted to do a quick update.
First off, thank you all for the major success of this guide! It has been so much fun watching youtube videos featuring my work. I'm just happy that I could make a difference to some of you. Now for the great news...
If you have and old, pirated version of Lockbot Pro or free, get the latest version (1.17.1)!!! This new version comes with a legit honeycomb lockscreen. It looks beautiful! Even if you don't have the app legally, you need to. Donating money to the creater of this app is worth it. I'm trying to get in contact with him, but so far no luck in getting even more features. Maybe he is just working on it. I giggly recommend getting lockbot pro now, as it is so worth it. Just trust me.
I also once again want to make clear: I only created the images in the zip file (except the background, but the circle is me ); I did not create the app. I cannot say enough about how good the developer is, though. Buy the pro version! I will post screens later.

Lockscreen Wallpaper Collection

I'm not a good developer. I wish I could contribute in that respect. But I made a few wallpapers so I thought I could share this with you guys.
BTW, can anyone point me to a good lockscreen/wallpaper rotation app (my idea is to get a bunch of lockscreens and rotate them every time i turn on the phone)
edit: looks like the Hardy png I submitted got converted to .jpg, which looks horrible. Here's the better version of it on ImageShack:
You will need to add a http before the thing I'm about to post because new users aren't allowed to post links.
img7.imageshack.us/img7/9920/lockscreenhardy.png
Hi again. Here's the rest of them. Had to wait 5 minutes and post twice to get around the max 8 attachments They're all formatted so that they don't get blocked by the default SenseUI lock info bar. If you guys have a clear lockscreen for 2.1 ROMs (mainly DamageControl... does it matter them ROM, Android version, or base?)
If anyone is wondering, I just did this real quick in Photoshop - first find an image with vertical appeal (rotation is an option to achieve this), scale the height down to 455 pixels (image size), then crop the width (canvas size) to 320 pixels. Easy peasy.
Here is one I created. Enjoy

Edit: I can change the background color if someone wants.

you can use lockbot, just load your images onto lockbot and then you can have your lockscreen wallpapers plus either iphone, eclair, flan, type slider. and then you will see a new one everytime you unlock your phone. its doesnt always work for me lol. but it does most of the time.
awesome. thanks, both of you.
I have just been using photos I put on my phone for background and lockscreens.....
Is there any easy way to recover a lockbot wallpaper from a nandroid backup I made before wiping and reflashing to DC? I obviously don't need Lockbot anymore now that I have the Eclair lockscreen, but I really miss the cool lockscreen glowing-droid image I used to have.
I guess I could reinstall Lockbot & redownload the wallpaper since it's still in my market list as a purchased app, but where would the wallpaper image itself be stored? Also, if anyone knows, are Android apps all totally self-contained universes, or could Lockbot screw up my now nicely-running phone in ways that would persist after uninstalling it (kind of like how you can smoke a brand new copy of Vista badly enough to need reinstallation by trying to install a 10 year old copy-protected game)?
The wallpaper should be on your SD card under .lockbot. That is where all themes are stored.
This is gonna turn into another porn thread shortly.
I absolutely love the calvin and hobbes one from the first post. absolutely beautiful
Thanks op. Nice pictures. I like A most.
OK, so I switched to Lockbot and now I don't need to raise the pictures so high anymore. I remade the ones that are now too high and attached them. I also made a Flan-style theme in Lockbot called "MiniFlan" that's designed to show off wallpapers more than tell the time (the clock and date are really small). Attached is a preview of what it looks like. You can download it here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YJ8IFWLE
Note: This theme contains a crapload of lockscreen pictures too. If you want to get just the lockscreens but not the theme, download the theme and look in the "bg" folder. You'll find almost all of the lockscreens I use right now. There are 69 of them and I love them all.
Err you know what, Lockbot is really not playing nice with my phone. I think I'll uninstall it soon.
Here are a few I collected around the web. Some are common ones but a few are unusual. I have quite a few more.
Let me know if you want anymore out of my collection.

[LWP]Make a Star Trek Communicator(update-App now available in market!))

(11-17-2010) UPDATE: My main purpose for starting this thread was in hopes that some developer would port the iphone version of the Star Trek Communicator for us Android Trek fans. My prayers have been answered!!!
Fellow XDA Developers member phineast has done a fantastic job and the app is now available on the market.

Since my method described below was a lame attempt to simulate the app, I see no reason for doing it unless you want to have it as a livewallpaper/lockscreen (and you have nothing better to do)! Honestly, the app is the way to go.
Original Post...
I've been trying to figure out how to duplicate this iphone app:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1TCJzhzXZM
After some fiddling around I came up with this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4KFLk2HFDE
Here's how to do it...
1. Download these 2 jpgs (right click and save image as) and stick them somewhere on your SDcard.
The homescreen wallpaper:
The lockscreen:
2. Install "Earth Live" live wallpaper and Map Pack from the market. There is a donate version as well but the free one works for our purposes.
3. Download this zip that contains the map pattern jpg and 2 wav files. Unzip them to somewhere convenient.
4. Install "LockBot" from the market. I use the paid version but I think the free one has all of the functions (unlock sound and shake-to-unlock) that we need.
OK, now we have all of our apps and files. let's build our theme.
5. Look in your apps and select the "Map Pack". Let it install the files to your SD card and then let it uninstall the installer. Go to your SD card and you'll see a folder called "EarthRot". Open it and there's another folder called "maps" which contains the pattern files for some of the planets in Earth Live. Remember the files you unzipped earlier? Take the "globetrotter.jpg" (you can actually rename it to any of the other planet skins that you don't want to keep) and copy it into the "maps" folder. Let it over-write the file in there (you can copy the file that will be over-written somewhere safe if you want). Now you can close all of that.
6. On your phone press "menu", "Wallpaper" and select "Live wallpapers". Choose "EarthRot" and press "Settings". Pick "Backgound" and then "Choose background". In the pop-up menu, pick "From Gallery" and then navigate to where you put the "COMM-face.jpg". This will be your live wallpaper background.
7. (a) Go back one screen to the Earth Live settings menu, pick "Maps" and then "Map". Scroll around and find "Globetrotter Home World" (or whatever planet you saved our modified map file as) and then pick it. While we're on this menu screen, make sure that "Orbiting moon" is NOT checked.
(b) Now back out to the previous menu screen and select "Globe aspect" and then "Globe size". Move the slider back a bit and then select "OK". Now select "Globe y position" and move the slider forward a bit and select "OK". Go back one screen again and make sure that "Natural Rotation" and "Planet natural axis" are both unchecked. Now Hit the Back button two times to get back to the preview screen. Our goal is to get the spinning globe to fit into the round window as closely as possible (NOTE: The newer version of Earth Live seems to offset the custom background on the preview screen and also after you "set wallpaper". When on the home screen, slide over to the next screen and then back and it will center the wallpaper). Keep adjusting the size, Y position (and probably X position too) until it fits pretty well.
(c) Select the setting "Globe behavior" and make sure everything is checked except "Slide rotation". Go back to the preview screen and you can now move the globe around with your finger. I put mine so that the axis is pointing straight at me. This makes the classic "moire" pattern of the communicator from the original Star Trek series. If you look at the link you can see other moire patterns used in Star Trek.
8. (a) Open "LockBot" and select "My Themes". Decide which style lockscreen you want (I like the "Galaxy" style) press on it and from the pop-up menu, select "Edit" and it will take you to that lockscreen. Press the phone's menu button and select "Background" then select "SD Card File" and navigate to wherever you saved the "com-lock.jpg".
(b) Now press menu again and select "Sound" and then "File" and navigate to where you saved the "com-chirp.wav" file.
(c) Now press the menu button again and select "Save". Before that, you can make some additional clock edits if you want (I selected "None" to get a cleaner look).
(d) Back out to the lock style selection screen and press the phone's menu button and select "Playlist". Uncheck all of the styles except the one you edited.
(e) Back out to the LockBot main screen (with the padlock and android) and then press the phone's menu button and select "Config". Make sure that "Enable", Unlock Sound", "Unlock Menu", "Shake Unlock", "Lock Long Press Home Key" and "Prevent Wake Up" are all checked. Now press "Shake Sensitivity" and while holding the phone firmly and securely, flick your wrist like you've seen Captain Kirk do. The pop-up should say "OK", if not, do it again until it takes. You may have to come back to this later and re-do it. LockBot's a bit buggy and the Shake Unlock doesn't always work.
That's it! If you have problems post away and I'll try to help.
...and don't forget... Live Long and Prosper!
EDIT: Whenever I reboot my phone the globe map loses it's transparency and ends up looking like a beach-ball. To fix this, go into the Earth Live settings and temporarily switch the map to "Death Star 2". Make sure to set wallpaper with that one! Once you're done, go back and re-set it to the map name you were using before and you'll get the cool moire effect back (at least until you reboot again)!
This happens because I cheated. The jpegs don't support transparency but pngs do (notice that the only png in the maps is "Death Star 2"). I tried just using that one for my moire but it maps differently than the others and never looked right. Instead, I made a png with transparency in it and just named it as a jpg.
Reserved for some ridiculous reason.
Bumpskiola!
Pretty neat, and instructions were clear. I like it, but since im not much of a star trek fan im probably going to mod this a bit while still keeping your core method. Great work mate
Re: [Tutorial]Make a Star Trek Communicator!
Thanks!
I think the basic method could be used for anything.
Use your imagination and get crazy with it!

I have a quick question though. How to uninstall the original lockscreen. As of now after your install, I have a double lock going on.
Nice work
Hopefully a dev out there is a Trekkie and will make a app like the Iphone's

LockBot replaced my lockscreen automagically. Are you using stock sprint ROM or one of the custom ROMs?
You could remove HTCLockscreen.apk and HTCLockscreen.odex but I think it may give you the messed-up vanilla lock.

Ive completed steps 1-5 no problems...
However on step 6 on my phone I go to personalize, home wallpaper, live wallpaper and select EarthRot. Its at this point it just sits there and does nothing while message says loading live wallpaper, I left it that way for several minutes. Then I clicked on settings, after about 20 seconds I get an error saying application earthrot(in process com.seb.SLWP) is not responding, I can select force close, wait and report, I selected force close then the application closes.
Please advise as this looks so cool on your video.

Try getting Earth Live to load without the modified files.
The incredible may be using different size jpgs for the maps. If so, just modify the globetrotter one from my zip to be the same size as the original.
You may also have to re-size the jpgs posted above to fit your phone (not sure about that).
Good luck!
got it to work but now have two other issues.
1. original htc screen lock wont go away.
2. lockbot wont change wallpaper when I select the file.

I haven't used this in a while and it seems the "Earth Live" live wallpaper app has undergone some changes that make this mod stop working.
I can't get the wallpaper to change either. I had to change the original communicator wallpaper to get it to select the whole image.
I tried jpg and png but neither worked. I will mess with it when I get time and see if I can figure it out.
If anyone figures it out, post back here!
EDIT: I got it to work! Use the wallpaper above. I am working on the other changes and will update the first post when I'm done.
OK, got it all working again. Files updated in first post.
Try uninstalling EarthRot and install it again and see if that fixes the problem. It works great on my EVO and even when I restart my phone everything is set. Great job with this love it

Hmmm, mine is still getting lost after a reboot.
Are you using a ROM that has A2SD enabled? I noticed at the first running of Earth Live there is a warning that mentions problems with running it from the SD card. I may try disabling A2SD and then doing the uninstall/re-install thing.
Thanks for your help and I'm glad you like it!

Hello all,
I've pretty much ported the communicator (as a rewrite) from iPod to the Android platform. Anyone care to help me test it and give me some requests for features?

[APP] Auto Shortcut - Generate Shortcuts With Custom Icons - 0.2 8/20/10

This is a little app I developed mainly because I got tired of changing all my shortcut icons by hand every time I wanted to try something new.
It works by a folder of icons on your sdcard and matching them to installed applications by name. For example, Browser.png gets mapped to the Browser application.
This is more of a test version i'm looking fro people to find bugs and try other devices.
If you are having problems:
Please send me your log by using the button from the main menu.
Known Issues:
- Very long list of notifications.
Changes:
- 0.2:
You can now edit the title of each app.
I have included a test set of icons, Token Icons, original can be found here: http://brsev.deviantart.com/art/Token-128429570
Now this is cool. Gonna try it out. Only thing is certain apps I like to change the name of when I create shortcuts with BetterCut. Like changing XScope to Browser. I suppose I could do those one by one with BetterCut though.
Adding name changing would be pretty easy.
That would be awesome!
Will try this one for sure
Works really great. It's convenient. Only work involved is naming the icons which can easily be done from your computer before you put them on the sd card.
Updated, you can now set title titles of each shortcut.
going to try it, thanksssssssssss
When I tried it, the buttons of the app did not work properly.
I ran into a slight problem. While selecting the icon folder.
Drilled down to folder.
Hit select...nothing
Hit select...nothing
Hit select...nothing
Hmm
Hit back button...nothing
Hmm
Screen turns black, osmonitor looks maxed out.
After around 5 minutes, maybe more, go into osmonitor and kill auto shortcut.
droid x
Froyo
350+ apps
I have the Droid Incredible, when I get to step 2 "select shortcuts to create" and I tap on create button nothing happens. I could go back to step 2 but I can't do anything on step 2
I'll take a look and throw in some log output data to see if i can find the problem.
could we have some images to test? I want to try this but I have no worthy images to replace my current icons
I added a test set of icons on the original post.
Those of you that are having problems, can you give me your device names and android versions.
didnt work with me
i choose the folder
n' then it shows step2 but nothing listed under it
although i named the icons really easy names ( browser, facebook, phone ) !!!
nexus one cyanogenmodRC3 rom
Did you make sure to capitalize the names? Currently it is case sensitive, perhaps it would be best to ignore the case.
Works on my non-rooted ( ) Evo....anyway we could get more icon packs?
Awesome stuff man =)
I will try on both my HEro and my Magic.

Theme or ROM?

So I'm curious about looks vs. functionality
Each one of my little drawings here satisfy both.
First off, I apologize for being a retard and using cam scanner to make these images sideways (although they were right side up originally).
Seeing as I can't attach images directly from my phone onto this site, I had to email them to myself, download them and then re attach.
Also another retard thing, I made a home button (app) thing on both of them even though there is a physical one on the phone itself.
Have a look
Also clarify with me which is which (theme or ROM).
How hard is it to design/engineer this and actually have everything function properly?
Theme/ROM 1
Them/ROM
it looks like you want to pull the whole status bar to the bottom of your phone. i didnt think you could just move that stuff around. a Dev would would be able to give u a yes or no.
im leaning more towards a theme than a Rom. but you can only theme what the Rom has. and NO rom has that, that i know of. so its like a combination of both.
Those drawings appear to be a significant layout overhaul, a la Sense and Touchwiz
It would either be:
1) a full-blown ROM
2) A replacement for a number of system apps (but could be an add-on), at the very least the launcher and probably the lockscreen
More than just basic theming, that's for sure.
Well it certainly gives the phone a neater, "in my opinion more efficient" functionality.
The one with the radial app dial, that spins, (you guys probably could tell that already) can fit either 7 or 8 apps.
When you press the home button the phone app automatically aligns directly above the said home button (non physical assuming there are 7 apps not 8).
The apps that go on the radial thing-a-ma-jig are your primary apps.
However since that non-physical home button is not needed, then the phone would be in the center or perhaps you'd like the browser.
In any case whichever app you use most extensively (ie #1).
I certainly cannot do any of the ROM creating but I was hoping to spark interest with the ones who are able to do so with ease.
The one with the triangle side bars (next image) these have 1-3 icons on them, when you tap that icon the first time a box will come up over lapping everything else in the background (or with slight opacity) and that gives you more detail rather than just an icon.
I think it would be neat as hell if this was done.
So is it like, theme = aesthetics ; rom = function
In this case I'd like to do both.
Also the capability to assign any app in that 7-8 slot (radial) would also be nice.
Perhaps done through the command prompt.
This is a feature I picked up from a blackberry (ability to assign any icon to a specific design/theme).
Thanks for the interest, I'm going to try and fix the orientation.
Some of what you're looking to do (the home-dial concept) may be doable without any ROM development at all - after all, plenty of launchers are installable as apps and what you're describing there is a launcher concept.
Notification bar moving could be a lot harder though.
FYI I'm a kernel guy not an app developer, so I can't help you much other than say that I'm fairly certain one of the features you want to implement can be done as a launcher app for any ROM.
Alright alright, we're sifting through sonething here.
I have very little knowledge od 'kernel' 'launchable' 'rom' as far as developing them goes. Are there tutorials ? (search bar probably)
Thanks for your contributions
What about color (borders keys etc)
Nice drawings man

Hey thanks DevilDogAK
It's one thing to draw the idea by hand but to actually create it with code...
That's where the tires hit the road one might say.
I need to do some reading to get an idea of what I have to accomplish.
Thanks for the interest, as always it starts with a dream
I'll let you guys know whats up when I actually get to the point of dev
But team work goes a long way (hint hint hint)
sweet... great concept imo, & hey, cyanogen started with just a concept. wish i knew more to help you out, but we're with you in spirit nice drawings too lol

About the launcher comment, does having two mean more computing power needed to run the first and second launcher or can I just do one primary launcher?
If I can just move things around, what about putting some notification components under the wheel? Components such as the wifi toggle and the data image or perhaps the data and battery.
Anyone smart enough to do that probably isn't dicking around on XDA. You never know though.
Well... I'm here
Haha just kidding, I do wish somebody with some experience knowledge (ie developer of Serendipity etc... ) a man can dream... a man can dream.

[APP][2.2+/3.0+][open source] Pixelesque - Pixel Art Creator

So I found out there's no pixel art creator/editor/drawer for android. Naturally I had to write one. 72 hours later: Pixelesque.
Backend is done with Processing, and all the android buttons were made with the app itself.
100% free
Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rj.pixelesque
Source: https://github.com/rjmarsan/Pixelesque
You can edit, export, share, etc.
I'm super interested in feedback; ease of use, feature suggestions, etc.
Hey, thanks for working on this. It is a very good start and a good idea since it can be a quick few minute diversion while waiting in line, on the bus, etc.
Additions that would be cool to see-
ability to choose the size of the canvas and be able to add or remove rows/columns.
see a preview of the picture quickly while creating it
have an optional coordinate system (a la excel) to keep track of space, symmetry, etc
(far off thought) social aspect! Have browsable creations from other artists, ratings, tagging and sorting, etc

Good suggestions. The preview and coordinate system seem totally doable. As for the first one, do you mean resize things, or making new ones? I thought the 'new' dialog did a good job of choosing custom sizes.
The social part is certainly something I had thought a lot about, but don't have the time or skill to write the server/browser side (anyone want to help?)
awesome!! i am huge into low-res pixel art (weird, i know) so i am very excited about this. just got a warranty replacement on my phone so i have to upgrade to 2.2 again before i can install but i'm definitely going to try it out.
as for quickly resizing to look at the overall picture: in a pixel program i use (GraphicsGale) as well as photoshop and whatnot, you can set a little "preview" window of your image to see how it looks zoomed out. it really helps being able to glance over and see the image to make sure it's all coming together and the composition is right, and as it might be bulky doing something like that on a phone it would be equally useful to have a quick "zoom out/zoom in" button to look at the overall image. i'm guessing that's what the other guy was saying - but like i said, i haven't gotten to install it yet so i have no idea if this kind of thing exists yet!

The preview is an excellent idea.
I'm slowly starting to realize I have more ideas than space on the screen. Is there anything that's less necessary, or confusing about the UI? I'm debating having a quick popup on startup explaining how to use it, but i sort of hate those apps.
Someone mentioned to me having the bottom bar of tools swipe side to side like launcher pro. Don't know if that's 'intuitive' or most people wont notice it.

I finally got around to updating my phone to get pixelesque, and I love it. The UI to me is simple and straight-forward; if you're looking to downsize, the pencil/hand tools could probably be combined. It helps having the single-pixel option but I don't think it's totally necessary. I'm impartial to the whole "side-swipe" thing; if you add more options/icons yeah it could come in handy but for now I personally like it as is. One thing that could attract a lot more pixel art enthusiasts could be the option to begin with a canvas of large pixels (like it has now) or smaller (maybe half-size?) pixels, for better detail. Again I don't know **** about app development so I have no idea how difficult changes like this are
But so far I love it! I'll update here with some pixel art if I ever get the time

You and silentheero have mentioned the same point. Is this an extension to the "New" dialog, or something I'm missing?
Also, I'm almost done with making a 'fill' brush and some geometry brushes 'circle, rectangle, line'. I think I'll try to implement a live preview as well as a color picker for the next release (probably in a week or so), along with any more features you guys can think of.
Thanks so much for the ideas guys.
New update, added a preview on the bottom, brushes (fill, rect, circle, and line), and upped the single image size to 64x64. Performance also has increased quite a bit.
No color picker JUST yet, still working out exactly how I'd like to implement it. Ideas? Thoughts in general?

How about holding the finger down on a pixel picks its color?
FEATURES I WOULD LIKE:
1) A textured background, so it is possible to distingush between a black pixel and a transparent one.
2) The ability to swich to fullscreen mode in the settings.
3) I can't save the file. I simply cannot figure out how to get a .png file out of the program. Export seems just wierd, I don't want to save at some other resolution than the one I draw in.
4) How about a simple in-game help text? I uninstalled Pixelesque once because I didn't discover most of the features (multiple canvas sizes, drag, zoom, auto-saved colors)
5) It would be nice if it was possible to import a high-res bitmap in the background, which I could trace as pixel-art. Then I could sketch naturally, either using a physical pencil, or another drawing app.
... Besides that, the app is perfect! Good work.

Yeah... for now you can dig out the actual .png from the program folder (that's all it uses to save the images itself), but I should add an 'original size' to the export menu, if that works?

I was actually thinking of making this a 'paid' feature, as it's a pretty intense. Not sure if this app is at a point yet where anyone would buy a paid version.

Thanks a lot man. Thanks for the feedback too. I pretty much make this app based off what people here ask for. The only other feature I've been thinking that you didn't mention, is a way to shift and resize drawings.

I would think of something like "stays fullscreen untill it's turned off again in the settings." I really like discrete minimalistic interfaces, so my ideal Pixelesque would probably be something like this:
img805.imageshack.us/img805/3075/pixelesque.jpg
I have removed everything, sized down the icons and removed the icons background, and added a bit of drop shadow.
After Chrome came out, Firefox copypasted its minimalistic GUI. So having less GUI must have some value. But I'm more fanatical about it than most.

Making it a paid feature sounds reasonable, since it is more geared towards more ambitious users.
Another method would be to have a high-res sketching layer with a few basic sketching tools: Sketching pencil, larger pencil at the size of a "final pixel" and eraser. Colors won't be needed. That way, the sketch could be drawn to fit a certain pixel size, and the artist won't waste time with too small details.
A FEW SMALL IDEAS:
Ability to turn the grid off
Two-finger shortcuts like Menu+screentouch or Pencil+screentouch. Could be used to turn preview on/off or eyedropper.
Toggle small/large/both by clicking the preview
For some reason, the semi-opaque square at my finger "feels" sluggish, since it jumps to the current pixel.
Will definitely be trying this. Used to "draw" on my old ti-82 all the time.
Sent using Tapalk.
People invent fantastic and simply things sometimes...
maybe a dialog to save when exiting should be added ?
or some mechanism that saves the last made image automaticly when exiting ?
I love pixel art but never got into it but as a person who never done it... I think the ability to import a picture in the background and create pixel art over it is an awesome idea.
It shouldn't be only in the pro version since I think this single feature will let everyone try it out and create pixel art.
Perhaps free version is limited to 16 colors vs 256 of pro + more tools.
Just the ability to import a picture in the background and use 16 colors to recreate it (don't need tools really just a pencil tool) = free.
Pro should have more tools, ability to resize grid, upload options (Facebook?), and more.

I spent all lunch discussing your comment. I think what I'm going to do, is it will automatically save right before the app quits. That way you can open an existing image, edit it for a while, save it as something else, but don't lose your original. However if you edit it and quit, you don't lose your work. Is that a fair tradeoff?

I have a really tough time with making a paid app. I've never done it before, as it feels really mean. On the one hand, I want the paid app to be for hardcore users who want the 'power tools' that are tough to implement and only benefit them. On the other hand, I don't want to purposefully lobotomize the free version to force people to upgrade... The image as a background is a handy feature, albeit a bit of an intense feature. I think I can work it in the free version, or alternately just may give away the pro version to you awesome xda guys.

Where is the Program folder? I can't find it on my SD Card.
This App is FANTASTIC. It's perfect for making my Rockbox Artwork. My suggestions so far are:
1) An easy way to export my created art in one go, rather than one at a time. The current way isn't that good for me. I see no point in having the option to export in the current Low, Medium and High resolutions. Like, what's the point? I'd just like to see it export the image(s) I've created in their existing size and be able to chose from one/many or all to export at once. ie transfer them to my PC.
2) The ability to Play the created files as an Animation or Flip Art. ie Let me choose a list of files I've created (all the same grid size) and the order I wish to see them shown and the speed. Similar to this:
https://market.android.com/details?...51bGwsMSwxLDEwNCwiYWlyLkJyaWRnZUludmFkZXJzIl0.
Check out the Vimeo link there.
3) The option to save them as bitmaps, preferably with colour options ie 2 colour Black and White.
4) I'd like to see the "Save As" option in the same Menu as the "Save". If I'm creating multiple files in succession, it would be nice to only have to tap the menu once and not click "More".
5) The option to choose Preview Size. I'd like a larger preveiw that what's there now.
Thanks for the great free app. It's a lot of fun.
