No HSUPA on the Inspire - HTC Inspire 4G

Been thinking abt picking this up... not sure now.

Well being as you are on xda forums I am assuming you will root and install custom roms. When you do, you will get the hsupa on the inspire like att should have had it

Yup. Not a big deal if you run a custom Rom and kernel.

Ahhhh. I thought this was a hardware deal. False alarm. Thanks guys

I've noticed the past two days I'm on 3g 90% percent of the time even running a dhd Rom. Is the hsupa defined by what kernel is used or is coverage in the ny area lacking? Anyone else having issues?

I've been getting upload of 1.59 with att1 stock rooted.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

I don't worry too much about upload speed on mine. There's no ffc to worry about video chat quality and I don't upload much except for the odd pic.

I get faster upload on att 3G than in sprints 4G.

Same here. My downloads are usually 800ish kbps. Maybe 600ish for upload.

so which kernel do u recommend running? i'm gonna be rooting tonight or tomorrow, i was gonna go with the stock kernel as was suggested in the other thread.

I'm running att1 stock rooted and the with stock kernal. You have to use this one or the telus kernal until source is released. My combo has the best sound. Plus non market apps and hotspot active.

I'm getting garbage DL and UL on my Inspire. My xPeria x10a is slaughtering. I have pics to show but xda won't let me put links up yet.

General newbie rooting question... if I have all my apps and crap installed and I root, do I have to reinstall it, or is it like jailbreaking iPhone where it just adds root access without touching the installed stuff?

The problem is that not having HSUPA affects your latency and download throughput negatively.

According to Engadget, Inspire hardware most certainly supports HSUPA and is disabled via firmware. If AT&T and HTC agrees to do so, they can easily release a firmware upgrade that would enable HSUPA.
Of course, I'm expecting custom ROM and kernel that will support HSUPA.

[Q] Buying an Inspire when it's back in stock..

So I'll be coming from a S***sung Craptivate after it killed its own memory, resulting in not having enough room to load a back-up or a fresh ROM after a full wipe. (Phone is actually in two pieces, divided straight across the center) I had the phone flashed with a rooted deodexed and lagfixed ROM (Paragon RC6) and undervolted and stock clock speed (1ghz). I also had a different launcher, text based icons, widgetlocker, basically nothing was "stock" about it, but that was out of need, to fix the shutdown problem, the crappy GPS, the crappy sound, the crappy speed, the crappy lag.. etc etc..
I will be buying a Desire when it is back in stock locally, hopefully with tomorrow's shipment. But I have a few questions...
How much different is everything about modding this phone? I've read the guides and the stickies, and liking the Ingersol ROM (with just a battery notification mod, would like it to be white and turn red below 15% instead of the crazy colors it does.)
I only have 3 questions really... but one or more may become more. Please bare with me.
1. It looks like to root I'd have to DOWNGRADE.. what does this downgrade affect, or is an up-to-date version flashed after the root?
2. Can anybody tell me what HTC Sense is all about? Is it the launcher? It seems like a combination of apps already out there but from HTC (Flip to silence for example). What do I lose by going with a non-sense ROM? Also I take it using Desire based ROMs don't use Sense? But why would people want to use a ROM based off a different phone altogether?
3. Gingerbread ROMs (CM7 and the like) were buggier than all hell on the Captivate. Sure it looked good (but that's theming) and was supposed to be fast, but all over the Craptivate develpment forums was posts about widgets/apps not working, not refreshing, or force closing constantly with 2.3.3. A lot of the phones functionality was lost too, like the ability to take pictures, or use it for social networking (Facebook not working..). How do the 2.3.3 ROMs take to the Inspire?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advanced!
You need to downgrade to get unknown sources back. HTC sense is basically a theme that designed for there phone if I'm not mistaking. The gingerbread themes here are very smooth and good. You will encounter bugs but that will always be fix from the developers

It only enables the exploit to get S-OFF (think recovery 2e from the Captivate, vs 3e which required signed update.zip's). Once done, you don't have to worry about it again. There are plenty of stock based ROM's like TPC or dilligaf for you to choose from if you so desire.

Sense is more than the launcher, it is a complete rework of the Android framework, like TouchWiz, but nowhere near as craptacular. It is actually useful. Any HTC sourced ROM will originally have Sense in it, but some HTC ROM's that say "no-sense" have a good chunk of that removed and are more like AOSP Android, but not quite all the way. Then there are other ROM's like CyanogenMod, which are based on actual Google AOSP code and have NO HTC software in them. It really is your choice which to use. I tend to flip between them. My personal favorites are CM7 and RCMixHD 5.9.4. I would flash them both to see what your preference is.

They work perfectly, with only the minorest of troubles that tend to be app specific, like the Gmail word wrap issue(which is not even a big deal at all). I haven't used a Froyo ROM in weeks.
And finally, welcome from another former Craptivate user! You will be MUCH happier with this phone.
Thanks!
In terms of stability, "snappiness" (at 1ghz clock speed), and resource consumption/management, is there a noticeable difference between Sense based, and AOSP based ROMs?
I'm also looking for decent battery life. I understand that screen on time and brightness, along with reception are the biggest consumers, but do one of the above based ROMs seem to do a better job of managing power consumption?
I am pretty weary of flashing a GB ROM just because of the numerous compatibility issues that I witnessed on the craptivate forum..
On the RCmix ROM, does it come overclocked by default? It says to use SetCPU to adjust it, so I'm assuming it runs at 1.0 ghz right off the flash? That ROM along with the theme with the white notification bar icons seems to be what I'll be flashing first. Thanks for the helpful information thus far!

The only thing about sense that really eats battery is the constant data usage of the HTC sense account, if you don't set up an account, your battery life should be rather good. As far as the gb roms they are all working very well, and you will find a small bug here and there, but all the major roms are very good daily drivers.
Most of the roms here have numorous tweaks for stability and snappiness, and you would probably be pleased with any of the major ones. I would say there is more difference between stock sense and tweaked sense than tweaked sense and no sense as far as performance goes. I ran stock for all of a few hours when I got this phone, and have been on a few roms with and without sense, and all of them have been very snappy and smooth.
Any of the major roms that support clock speed adjustments will use setcpu to adjust it, you can run at basically any speed setcpu lets you(within reason, and check the rom post for exceptions and recomendations) I currently run at a maximum of 1.5ghz on miui and my battery life is just as good as it was running 1.2ghz on android revolution.
And last but not least, don't be afraid of gingerbread here, most major bugs have been worked out and 90% of the problems posted about are due to the installer, not the rom.
Welcome aboard!

Just an add on note:
Gingerbread sense ROMs do not have overclocking right now. But really they are so butter smooth especially when compared to a captivate. RCMix5.9.3 has no compatibility issues I have found.

Yep they are GB. There is also Ultimate Droid, which I am using now. This is the best ROM I have used so far, but all of them have been rock solid as far as performance goes. I don't think you will find a bad ROM on here. You will recognize some of the devs from the captivate forums.
As for my battery life. I have been unplugged for just over 15hrs and I am down to 21%. That is with 2 push email accounts, 3 hours streaming rhapsody, 2 hours mp3 music, 30 mins of calls, and about 1 hour of browsing/gaming. It also helps that I am on wifi for 90% of the day.

Are there any benefits of going with the GB version of RCmix versus the Froyo version? Basically I don't feel comfortable flashing an OS not designed for the device so I'm leaning towards the Froyo based version of that ROM.

Intrigued by 1.92 oc. Which kernel/rom combo is best for that support?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
To be honest its not advisable to get to 1.92. Too unstable and performance gains over 1.4 are minimal. If you want fast, run perfect storm 1.4 with ziggys kernel oc to 1.4. Gingerbread roms are nice but unstable and the accompanying radio is horrendous. Finally the gb kernels are not good yet since the source has not dropped.

It's not prefect, but no rom is. The main problems are:
1) toggling from wifi to mobile data requires a reboot, although there are reports that this has been fixed
2) some people experience buggy data connections while many do not
Not any kernel will work but Imoseyon's does and is quite good (arguably better than on Sense roms). There are others as well.
While it's pushed as pre-alpha, it's plenty stable enough to run as a daily driver. Many people do. I would rather run it than a Sense 2.1 rom.

I've been using CM7 for about a week now, there was an update on Saturday that fixed the wi-fi and data connections work fine. Only problem I noticed was going into an "Extended Network" area caused 3G to drop, but if you enable international data roaming it connects back to 3G.

Rom: CoreDroid v6.7
Kernel: MDJ's v22
I think that CD 6.7 has MDJ's kernel by default, but don't hold me to it. I saw in the changelog that v6.8 (due out today) has the latest Lee Kernel. I used GTG's RIL flasher in Rom Manager to flash the RIL after installing the radio, but there's instructions at the link burton provided.
I have been using LeeDriod for awhile now jumping back and forth to other roms but I for some stupid reason like sense and the 3.0 lockscreen. from what I have been seeing in others change logs is that they are using the leedriod kernel of and on so he must be doing something right, as for Radios I stopped flashing the after the latest release of the stock AT&T radio, I really never noticed any difference with anyone's radio

Modem Issues w/GB Builds

There's been a lot of discussion about the low WiFi signal from most, if not all, of the Gingerbread builds. Many have speculated that it's simply a display issue and not a performance one.
My wife has a stock ROM (Froyo) and I have the GB build KH1. I did a test comparison of both the WiFi download speeds and the 4G performance.
The KH1 ROM *way* underperformed the Froyo one -- to the point where her stock ROM was at least 2-3x as fast as the KH1 build. 4G performed similarly. WiFi Analyzer also showed a huge difference in signal strength.
I then installed the KH2 modem and tried the same experiment and while it improved it somewhat, it was still woefully lacking in speed over the stock Froyo ROM.
With that said, has anyone found a prior modem build that works better than what's been released recently? This is a huge issue for me and while I love the GB build, to lose that much connectivity speed is troublesome.
There is a thread with all the modems on them, check the bible, you can flash each one to see which is best for you.

I don't think its a modem issue with gb. I've tried them all, wifi still sucks.

Yeah not much you can do here, there will be more leaks..as wifi is still horrible and unacceptable for such an expensive phone..samsung just have to get it right!!
Thanks for the info and confirmation. I was afraid that we'd have to wait for the CM7 release. I've tried several of the modem releases and nothing has worked any better.

I just jumped in neck deep and flashed the latest GB rom KII, Doc's new kernel and was surprised at my wifi speeds. before on stock froyo my wifi was sluggish and intermittent. Now as a matter of fact my whole phone is faster, very snappy. I'm very happy seems like I got a new phone with a duel core cpu
Thanks to all!

Unofficial CM9 ROM questions

According to the OP, the torch is supposed to be a working feature. However, I have not been able to get mine to work at all. Was just curious if this was an oversight or something I should correct on my device?
Additionally, I would like to know what a safe and stable OC speed would be for my Inspire 4G.... I'm a bit of a speed-freak but do not want to jeopardise anything.

Are you sure your camera LED's are in good working condition? Speed wise, you can overclock it to almost anything you want. If it is overclocked too much, your phone will just freeze and you might have to format everything to ROM default to get out of it. I think you can go up to 1.2 if I remember correct. I always underclock my ROM so that it saves on battery.
EDIT: I found out that it is an issue with the ROM, follow this thread in DHD, you might need a different kernel.

Also, I'm still playing with safer speed limits but the difference has made my lead thumbs a little happier. 1420 looked good lol.
As for the torch, I'm too up to my neck with commissioned artwork to reflash so I'll use the lazy fix and use my video flash/LED if I just must have one.

I remember reading somewhere that the inspire can go up to 1.8 but it's not recommended to go more than 1.5
I have mine up to 1.3 working great!

To go back to the thing about Torch, it its working in the 2.0 release and the test 2.4 release as well. I recommend the 2.4, it has better battery life.
