Can I use another memory card and save the one I used to root with??
Yes. The card is just there to access the hole for root access. You are now perma-rooted until you flash back to stock.
Inspire (rooted)
Leedroid v2.0.0
Telus kernel
AOSP Lockscreen

I have a u s Cellular HTC Desire and would like to root my phone, but would it wipe out all my apps, contacts, and calendar? Also, if I needed to unroot, is there a RUU for a uscc cdma phone? I can only find ones for Verizon cdma phones.
Rooting will not affect your data in any way.
i rooted my desire a couple of days ago and also did the s-off mod, you'll only lose all your data if you flash the phone with a different rom but if you back everything up properly before you flash it, it's not a problem, i flashed mine with the new starburst rom and can confirm that everything works as it should, it's stable, fast as **** and i now have 1gb internal memory, i'm using a 32gb class 4 card and am realy glad i rooted, rooting on its own will only enable you to use apps that require root access, if you want to flash a different rom you'll need to s-off, it's easy and you won't regret it, hope this helps
Ok so I now own a Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and like everyone else the internal memory is nearly full out of the box.
The solution.......... root your phone and install a custom ROM right!
Phone is rooted and ready, but now I have some questions in regards to installing the custom ROM.
1. How do I back everything up in case I need to roll my phone back to the original settings?
2. I have seen things that say ODIN does not work well for flashing at this point and time and may brick your phone, please confirm if this true.
3. I'm currently thinking about Darky's custom ROM, good distro or not? If its not please recommend a better one.
4. To anybody that has installed a custom ROM how much application space did you gain by this change?
Thanks in advance for the help
Backup the original ROM with ROM Manager.
I do not have a Galaxy 4G so i don't know how much memory it has, but i'm using MIUI on my Desire HD and i got some extra space after flashing it.
The original Sense ROM is about 260 MB, while MIUI is 65MB. So if you want extra space i recommend a CM7 based ROM. (MIUI is based on CM7 btw)

in regards to freeing more memory, when i ran out of memory i decided to root my phone and then got instructions on replacing fota files in the /data/data directory. Immediately I got about 300 meg extra memory on the phone, cause 2 fota files were 125 meg each. After that I was trying to install OCLF 2.2 but it would not work, period! And I can not find the older OCLF anywhere. Than again, I heard that older OCLF comes with root software and I am already rooted. So i froze all the bloatware using bloat freeze app, and unroot, factory reset and root it again. Now, for some reason I have 416 med available out of 514 total. Probably erased all bloatware that was frozen - really don't care about it tho. So if your phone is rooted, here is your answer! I read on XDA that the custom ROMs are on a way to the public but i don't think they are there yet. I am a noob but I would not flash my galaxy s 4g with vibrant ROM. To me it looks like sure brick, someone correct me if I am wrong
I got a ARIA locked by HTC. I had updated the same to FROYO and this is the problem for me. I was unable to get ROOT for 2.2 using the current version of UNREVOKED.
Now, Can I made full format of this current OS software and flash the CM7? Did full flashing the CM7 unlocks the phone?
My current problem is ROOT. How can I get root? and If I got ROOT, Flashing CM7 will unlock the phone?
Some one show some light on this.
So i just followed the guide. I am happy to say that i just successfully rooted my phone. Took me a few tries but finally was able to do it.
So now what? I am down to GB 2.2 and now have to figure out how to get to GB 2.3.
In terms of ROMS what can i use to make sure not to brick my phone and do i just install them on my sdcard and use clockworkrecovery to load them or do i have to install them to romzip and use Ace Hack It.
Thanks guys for your support in development. I am looking forward to using a rooted Andriod.
This thread would probably be better off in Q&A, but at any rate. Yes you just put the zip for the rom on your sd card and flash it with CWM, no need to use the hack kit. Any ROM in the dev section should work well for you without bricking your phone. It's just a matter of what you want from your ROM.
Welcome, new rooted user
There are a few GB ROMs out there and here are a few located in the Dev section...
Leedroid
Coredroid
Android Revolution
All are quick and stable it is just personal preference on what you want. Simply download the ROM to your computer and place it on the root of your SD card, and then boot into clockwork and wipe your device clean...
1. Factory Reset
2 Advanced-Wipe dalvik cache
3. Install from sd card and choose your ROM
Very simple if you have any other question feel free to ask.

If you want a rom that looks stock but runs great, I would recommend rum runner. Also, welcome to the addiction. I flash a new rom at least once a week.

I've tried a bunch of different roms, and the one I like the most as of now is CoreDroid V8.1
Back when i first rooted my phone I tried ARHD, Leedroid, and a few others and stuck with ARHD until I ran upon CM7. Started with the nightlies because they were the only ones that could run Netflix at the time and have been stuck on CM7 since.
Try a few and figure out the style you want (stock looking or AOSP) because themes can be done for all of them.
I'm on cm7, and love it.. I can now tether, and be a hot spot without changing my plan...

Add Ninja to a list of ROMS to try as well, very stable, fast and good on the battery.
If you wan to jump from 2.2 to 3.5, I'd recommend RCMix3D Runny.
I'm rooted and running CM7.1 RC1 but I think I may want to go back to stock however I want to have wifi hotspot unlocked. How do I do this on stock? And where do I find a stock ROM zip file to flash to bring me back to stock and keep root? The one link I found for a stock ROM the link was broken.
If you use ROM Manager you can find a stock rooted ROM from Peter Alfonso
Under his listings you will also find the tethering fix
This is of course for the Nexus S 4G for Sprint, since you have the Sprint logo under you avatar
