When I select backup Rom in ROM manager, it reboots and i get a screen with an exclamation mark with an android bot. Same thing happens when I try to get into recovery with power on + volume up button.
But when I select reboot in recovery from rom manager it works and i was then able to take a back up from there.
What do i do ? Current and latest clockwork version are same according to rom manager. I updated it twice using ROM manager to make sure its the correct one

What rom are you on?
everything stock ... clockwork mod installed from rom manager .. latest and current are same...but rooted.

Tried it. Nothing happens. Have to take battery out. But I can still access recovery by rebooting in recovery from rom manager
Try installing it from the bootloader.
Name the image file recovery.img
Put it in the android sdk tools folder(or wherever your fastboot.exe is) and run the command -
"Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Then reboot, it should work.
The android with a "!" is the stock recovery. You don't have to pull the battery at that screen, just press hold power button, then press volume up, you should end up in stock recovery.
In ROM Mgr, FLASH clockwork recovery (twice for good luck, seriously) before trying to boot/backup from ROM Mgr. That should get you going.
The fastboot flash method mentioned above also works.
Part of your issue is that there's a file called /etc/install-recovery.sh that overwrites clockwork recovery with the stock one every time you boot up normally. Rename/delete that file and clockwork will stick after that.

I have found if you to flash Clockworkmod recovery from Rom Manager and you already have the same version, it will remove it all together.
just reboot your phone and run the recovery installer once. Right now, it should be version 3.0.0.5. After you run it. Reboot your phone -> hold power + up (or down don't remember) -> select recovery.
If it is there, you should be able to get to it from the Rom Manager link also.

Thanks for the information That should explain why Clockwork doesnt show up everytime. And yeah didnt have to pull the battery, simply went into default recovery from that screen Thanks. will try renaming install-recovery.sh

I installed once again. It said no recovery or image found. Installed again, could go into clockwork recovery but after rebooting again the same
renaming install-recovery.sh in etc folder worked Now can I go into clockwork recover on every boot

Since the Evo just got NAND protection removed, I figured I'd share the persistent version of ClockworkMod recovery
Currently ROM Manager is using a recovery hot replace to give you a custom recovery. But I'll eventually be packaging this into ROM Manager's flashing process like the other phones it supports. I'll wait a week or so to switch, while everyone switches over to the new root.
For those that want to make ClockworkMod their default recovery on recovery boot, use this image:
These step assume you have already unlocked your NAND using the "Part 2" thread in the forums.

Yes, in a week, when everyone has done their NAND unlock, ROM Manager will start flashing and replacing your recovery for you, so you don't need to do this manually. I do not want to switch right now, because that will leave people who haven't unlocked out in the cold.
Does this mean that for right now if we make this the real recovery that when we choose "Reboot to Recovery" in ROM Manager that it will not work until ROM Manager is updated?

No, that will still work.
This is just an option for people that want to boot into recovery via the power key combination. Or those that don't want to apply the update.zip on the root of their SD card to switch to ClockworkMod. It's just a convenience/safety net people wanting to replace their recovery now.

no, it means when you choose reboot to recovery in any application, ROM manager, quickboot or thru adb it will reboot to the phone's recovery partition but instead of loading the stock recovery, it will load this custom recovery!
this is basically a permanent or "sticky" recovery where as before we had to load the custom recovery every time as a temporary or "non-sticky" recovery. the days of temporary or non sticky recoveries are OVER ... at least until the next update from HTC/Sprint!
Koush, I m still a completely rookie on root part, EVO4G is my first androind phone, and 0 experience on root. Besides, i haven't done anything about rooting evo4g yet (still kinda struggle here, worrying to brick such a$$kicking phone, anyway). So please forgive if my question sounds ridiculous and stupid.

This doesn't seem to be the case on my phone. After going through Toast's NAND unlock process (replacing his recovery image with yours in the last step, only change) I boot back up and try to "reboot into recovery" from ROM Manager. It takes me to a screen with an android and a white triangle with a ! in the middle.
From that point I have to take out the battery to turn off the phone, afaik. For the record, at that point I turned on the phone while holding down vol down and got into the stock hboot screen where it checks for PC36IMG.zip. It didn't find anything because I have moved the files, so I selected recovery, and it booted right into ClockworkMOd Recovery v1.8.2.0

I get the android with the white triangle as well when using reboot into recovery from rom manager. However the normal recovery is now clockwork great job and thx K!
Confirming this as well.
Booting to recovery via adb or hboot works as expected, reboot from Rom Manager doesn't.

Booting via ROM Manager still uses the recovery hot replace, which is using a recovery with a different version number. They're exactly the same, no worries

Oh gotcha. So thats what that progress bar is before it loads up? And this won't happen with the updated ROM Manager coming in a week. I guess thats not really a question, but if I'm wrong feel free to correct me

ok i am rooted but cannot seem to flash a custom rom. everytime i try to do it it takes me back to the clockwork mod recovery screen instead of the other regular one. i removed rom manager and clockwork off of my sd card but it still doesnt let me do it. i tried manually and using rom manager to flash a custom rom it wipes and restores but when it gets ready to load the rom it stops and takes me back to the recovery screen wtf.....please help me man im ready to throw this ****ing phone....arrrrrghh
You need to have "A" custom recovery installed. Currently there are only two that I am aware of; Clockwork's or Amon's.
You can flash a new recovery via adb but if you are unsure how to do that I would first try to see if you can do it through ROM Manager. ROM Manager is Clockwork's app but if you open it up and scroll to the bottom you will see an option to "Install Alternate Recovery." Selecting this will bring up the option to flash Amon's recovery.
If this is successful, make sure you have the "New.ROM.You.Want.To.Flash.zip" on the root of the sdcard and power down the phone.
Once off, hold the volume down button and then press and release the power button (still holding down the volume down button).
The phone should boot into a white screen with a few lines of text. At this point you can stop pressing the volume down button.
Using the volume up/down buttons to navigate the 4 options and the power button to select, select #2 recovery.
The phone will then boot into Amon's recovery which should be a black screen with green text.
Still using the volume up/down keys to navigate and the power button to select, first go to wipe and do a wipe of "erase data-restore," cache, and dalvik cache.
Once this is complete you can select "Return" to go back to the previous menu and select Flash Zip from SdCard.
Select the ROM.zip you want to flash and when finished reboot the phone.
Marvel at your new ROM

ok i did this and it told me that it wasnt found and then when i typed in the reboot part it said not permitted.
You obviously did not use ok's instructions above, so what instructions or programs are you trying to use? Clockworks recovery always loads a zip file from the sd card as stated above. Also with this method you do not use a computer at all, maybe to get the zip file to the sd card.

Is Amon the factory? I just want to get my phone back to the factory setting. I tried to unroot my captivate using a one-click app, but it didn't remove the superuser privileges. Do I need to remove this clockworkmod first? If so where can I get this AMON file?

no Amon is a custom recovery. try downloading the stock RUU from your service provider and using that. i am not sure if that will re-flash the recovery back to stock, but that is the only thing that i can think of to tell you to try.
After successfully flashing ClockWork RecoveryMod, I placed SU on the root of my SNS, powered it off, went into fastboot, but when I went into Recovery, it just went to Stock Recovery, the Exclamation Mark inside the Triangle with the Android next to it appeared, but no text or anything else is on the screen. I've let it sit for about 15 minutes, and nothing. I also can't do anything by clicking the volume buttons, or the power buttons. I've also unplugged the Phone, held the power button to try to reboot it, held volume-up and power to try to go back into fastboot, but nothing. Should I pull the battery? Why didn't it go into ClockWork RecoveryMod? Command Prompt gave me the whole " sending 'recovery' (3980 KB)... OKAY [ 0.621s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 0.511s]
finished. total time: 1.132s" thing...
What do I do? I can't just leave it sitting like this forever.

Just try 3.0.0.5. There is something wrong with clokwork mod it you just went into stock recovery. You should be fine if you follow one of the guides on this forum.

I'm a bit confused with your post.
I am still using the Stock Rom, but I don't have root access.
I've tried, after unlocking the Bootloader, going into Rom Manager and Flashing ClockWork, but it tells me first:
"You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin.su". (...)"
Then, when I still attempt to flash ClockworkMod, it tells me:
"An error occurred while attempting to run priviliged commands!"
I should have told the full story first.
I was once rooted, but it was through ROM Manager and flashing Clockwork from there. But then I had a few issues with my Wifi, and I decided to flash back Stock Rom. I still had an unlocked Bootloader though, so I thought that just redownloading Rom Manager and flashing CWRM and having Superuser installed would work. It didn't. So I attempted to root all over again, this time, manually.
But, I always go back to square one, it seems, when I try to get into Recovery.
What up with that?
After you flash CWM recovery, go straight into recovery from the fastboot menu. Do not reboot. Do not power off. Flash CWM and when it finishes immediately press volume down to select recovery and then press power to go in.
The Nexus S will overwrite CWM with stock recovery every time the phone boots by default. This could be what is giving you trouble.

No problem.
There is a script located in the /etc folder called install-recovery.sh. it runs every time you boot and installs stock recovery. You have two choices: always use rom manager to flash CWM every time you need to access recovery, or use root explorer to rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak so that it will not run and will leave CWM installed.

Actually I think that guide does have two unnecessary steps that cause confusion. After flashing CWM, the guide instructs the user to power off, power on, and then to access recovery. The user should just access recovery immediately after flashing.

That's partly my fault, I never went down to the 2nd Post and saw those Notes, but what's the point of not including that already in the steps in the main Post? He could have just told to go straight from Recovery after flashing CWRM, but decided not to.

I think he should just have instructed to place the SU zip on the root of the SD card before flashing CWRM. That way, there wouldn't be a need to reboot to mount the SD to place SU, that way potentially losing the CWRM.
Is clockwork recovery necessary for all roms or can i download a recovery to my phone?
Well if you could make a recovery based off of something else that had ext. 4 support then you could probably use that. Just the fact that there is already CWM for the MT already makes it easier. If you meant does it need to be installed then yes, you need it installed to flash different roms.
Can CWM be flashed through Rom Mgr? I tried bootloader and mobile and image and recovery img and i think i put in wrong folder. Everytime i try to get back into bootloader with pwr button and vol dwn. It goes right to M screen. How can i fix this?
Ok i get to download mode now where do i put the extracted recovery folder in image? Do i place with recovery img or down at the bottom?. When i take battery out and put back. I pwr and simitaneously vol buttons. I get the triangle !. What am i doing wrong. Oh and im on ver 2.2.2
It's real easy all you need to do is Volume down then power sometimes it's a pain in the ass but keep repeating the steps until you see white writing on the screen, then plug it into your PC, it should bring up a drive called mobile there will be a folder open the folder & replace only the recovery image then reboot. Should be all good. Then press volume up & down & power should boot into clockwork.
Did u install CM7 first?
You can't install CM7 or any other rom "first" using stock recovery. As far as I have seen CWM is the only alternative to the stock recovery.
I tried to use the search and google but didn't really find anything helpful. Almost 2 years ago, I unlocked the bootloader back on honeycomb and did custom recovery, root, and custom rom. Then a little while after ICS came out, I did the OTA update.
Today, I reset the xoom back to stock ICS and tried to unlock the bootloader again...thinking nothing of it. The process was taking a few minutes so I decided to get a snack and when I came back it was rebooting.
I assumed that it worked and continued to try and fastboot a recovery image. The recovery image installed and I did another reboot but was greeted with the android welcome screen. Anyways I went through the menus and then tried to enter recovery and it gave me an android laying on its back with and exclamation point above his open chest.
I hard rebooted and can still get into my device, but adb cannot seem to find my xoom anymore. I have tried it on a 64bit desktop and laptop with no luck.
Have I messed up? Or is there a simple fix that I am missing? Thanks in advance for any help!
Can you get into fastboot mode? The second time you unlocked did you have to go through the questions on your xoom again?

Yes, I can get into fastboot by holding the volume down key and the power button. That's fastboot, right?
Yes, I had to go through the menus the second time I unlocked.
sounds like the recovery you try to fastboot did not take or the rom was corrupt.. Which recovery was it? Do you want to be rooted and run a custom rom or completely stock? what xoom do you have(wifi, 3g, 4g)

I am on a 4G xoom on 4.0.4 but I don't use my data plan. I would like to be on a nice stable build of 4.2.
Download your rom choice, gapps and put them on the root of your sd card. If they are already there skip this step
I like TWRP Recovery the best. Easy to use and lots of options.
download this Twrp 2.4 img to the folder you hve fastboot in
open a cmd prompt in that o that folder
type fastboot flash recovery TWRPv2.4.1.0.img
Once you have verification on your device that this has been flashed, reboot your device by holding volume up + power.
Then 3 seconds after you see the Motorola logo, hit volume down. You should now see "Android Recovery" in the top left corner. Hit volume up to boot into recovery.
You should be in twrp 2.4
select backup/restore and backup your current system
select install and find your rom select asnd then swipe to flash
when done then select home
select install again and find the gapps package and install
when done select wipe dalvick/cache
when done select reboot
select system
you should be good to go.
Well I got through all of the steps, but when I try to boot I get stuck in a loop of the roms boot logo. Is it okay to flash a wingray rom over a stingray device?

I think it is fine just the 3g/4g won't work.
I can get you going again but you are going to be starting with a locked honeycomb device. You will then have to either let it update to ICS or JB or unlock, root, install custom recovery and flash a rom. What xoom do you have 3g or 4g?

Okay I restored it again but this time i did a factory reset and wipe dalvick before flashing the rom and gapps. It works! Thank you for your help!
However, could I ask how to root this thing?
since you have a custom recovery on it already and are unlocked.
Download this file Universal xoom root place it on the root of your sd card and flash it. Then reboot and try a root required app such as root checker
