Is anyone having trouble with clockworkmod? Mine wont backup rom.
I got everything working fine. I rooted before we know that clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 wasn't compatible. With 3.0.0.6 everything is good to go.
Can you tell me how you rooted?

I rooted with the ace hack kit posted in the dev section. Clockwork installs but, it just wont go into backup. It used to work perfect on my evo.
Mine works just fine.
Try reinstalling CWM from Rom manager.
I think I managed to brick my Inspire while trying to restore a Nandroid backup. From what I've gathered, CWM 3.x is not compatible/buggy with Froyo ROMs (it was designed for Gingerbread). I'm going to flash CM7 to see if I can downgrade to CWM 2.5.x
CWM Black Screen / no boot
I'm having an entire failure of CWM on my device period.. I rooted using the ace hack kit and hboot confirms S-OFF..
That said, if I use the hw keys Vol Up + Power to get into recovery, the front LED flashes orange and it vibrates 4 times, then just sits with the blinking LED forever until I pull (or shall I say, sling) the battery out.
Attempting to go in via either adb reboot recovery or rom manager yeilds an interesting HTC boot logo fading to black then sits forever.
I've tried all version of CWM Rom manager will find, all do the same thing...
Any one else seen this issue or have any insight?

me too. i did get it into recoverry the first time with the hack kit but since then ive gone back to a stock rooted rom. and it wont work at all now
slcd bug?
Sounds like another slcd bug for clockwork.
you can google it.
Mine does same thing. It boots into recovery, then I see HTC logo, fades to black.
Clockwork is running though, and you can still flash stuff. You just cant see what is going on.

Is there anyway around this? I rooted with Bubby's One Click and I had this problem. Then I flashed a stock Rooted S-Off Rom with sideloading using HBoot and renaming the zip file. It flashed fine but the same thing occurs, fade to black screen from HTC Logo.
I tried using the same version of CWM & Rom Manager r34p3rex uses in his YouTube video, but it also does this and now I'm completely lost.
I've used CMW many times on my Nook Color, and I know that there's no way I could back up and flash blind
I had the same problem on my phone with the logo fading to black when trying to access clockwork. To get it to work, you have to get eng s off. There's a thread in the dev section titled "how I learned to love the bomb", or something like that, that explains everything

Thanks vaififty. I'll look into it. My HBOOT screen says S-Off so I assumed it was. I appreciate the help.

Ok, I go into hboot and select recovery so I can flash the gingerbread rom I downloaded. It wont load into recovery. I tried to go through Rom Manager too, but it just goes to a black screen with no commands? Anyone have help for this? I have pulled battery and reloaded to hboot, tried rom manager and flashed clockwork from there.
Thanks for any help!

Thank you!
I will have to do this later. As I am exchanging my Inspire, since I scratched it getting the battery case off. My rep said no worries just bring it and he will give me a new one. So I unrooted it for tonight. And will re root tomorrow.
Mine does the same thing. I just use rom manager to flash, and when it goes to a black screen, just lay the phone down and wait. (may take up to 5 minutes or so) It will eventually restart with the new rom/kernel or whatever. At first i thought it wasn't doing anything, but i later found out it IS flashing, I just cant see it. Restarting/pulling battery during the black screen could result in a brick due to it actually working but you not seeing it, so be careful. Good Luck.

I would try much safer methods to fix your fade to black screen than running Eng S-Off. A bad install using Eng S-Off is the easiest way of bricking your phone, PLUS you just don't need Eng S-Off for anything.
Pulling the battery while in the black screen will niy brick your phone. CWM Recovery is actually running you just can see the screen. How do I know? Run a backup in Rom Manager. It will eventually reboot and you can check if the backup was successfully by doing selecting restore in Rom Manager which will show the backup you just performed.
You can pull the battery when you see the black screen but even easier is just press the power button.
If you want a safe method to correct the black screen just look at my post on the first page if this thread.

I just tried to use this method on my Inspire today and there was an error when flashing back to the stock AT&T ROM after gaining S-OFF and root. When I try to start up the phone normally, it gets stuck on the HTC screen. When I try to boot into recovery, it just shows a black screen while the LED is green.
Anybody know what I can do to fix my phone?

Sorry your link doesn't seem to work.
If you press the down volume and hold power can you get to hboot?
Try using bubby's tool to fix the CWM black screen. Its under the fixes link.
I can't seem to access any sort of recovery or hboot. Holding down both volume buttons and turning the phone on will result in the black screen with green LED. Holding the down volume button and turning the phone on does nothing.

Sorry go to Bubbys super one step and search for CWM black screen....
If it helps, the phone vibrates 5 times then shows a black screen.
Well I was able to get into HBOOT but when I tried to go into recovery, the screen would just turn black.
You need to get the stock rooted PD98IMG.zip into the root of your sd card. Then go to hboot and let the phone find it. Follow on screen instructions. Note the progress bar will be vertical on upper right. I bet that fixes you up on getting the phone working. Black screen on cwm is a whole nother issue. One that I share. I think I'm going to revert to stock unrooted and then our attn1 hack kit.
There is a solution you can eng s-off, but I would not advise this there is no need to eng s-off your phone.
The simplest way though it may take longer is to, revert to stock and reroot and s-off with the hack kit.
This is a very common problem with the one click. To be honest there is a thread made just like this twice a day.
Thanks for all the help everyone. I managed to fix everything on my phone. I just flashed the rooted AT&T stock ROM with HBOOT and then used the one-click ENG S-OFF method to fix the black screen on CWM. Now running CM7 perfectly. I'm glad I no longer have to send it back to AT&T.
kinder gentler XDA i guess. Last year posts like these would have been flamed right off the board. Thats not a bad thing, but new people are wasting everyones F'ing time with these posts.
RTFM! w/e it is you decide to do , how about looking for help in the dam thread you downloaded the stuff from? I duno maybe we have a bunch of people brand new to Forums or something.
Ok I don't mean to thread jack, I just didn't want to start a new thread for this. I've been running the Coredroid Rom since I first rooted my phone. I have never had any problems with my phone even when trying out other roms. Today I tried installing the new Coredroid 5.0. It all went well as usual except this time on the last step of the setup wizard, it said something like "setup has stopped working unexpectedly and will notify HTC" and only let me press ok to force close.
After that happened all I couldn't even go to my home screen. I then tried restarting my phone but got stuck on the Coredroid rotating logo. Only way out of that was to pull the battery cover. Tried going into recovery mode but the screen would just be black and I would have the orange light flashing. That didn't work so I tried restarting again. Again just got stuck on the spinning logo.....This is where **** gets weird. I began to receive a call while on the logo and that allowed me to answer thus leaving the spinning logo. I still could not go to my home screen. I could only use the drop down notifications menu. I restarted my phone again so I could call myself while on the logo and again it got me unstuck from the logo. Only way to fix every thing was to use the search option and run Rom Manager and recover from my previous back up.
So I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I always fallow instructions and hardly ever have any problems but this was just odd. I felt like I had to solve riddles in order to get my phone working again.
See if you can boot to bootloader by means of ADB (adb reboot bootloader). If so reflash the stock rooted rom then reload CWM. You might need to Eng-S off if you have a corrupt file / bootloader? When done reflash CorDroid 5.0 (What I am running by the way)....
black htc screen
I tried to root my phone like an idiot because I dont know anything about this stuff and I got a black htc screen and i cant do anything. HELP!!
I see a lot of motivation in this and other threads to leave well-enough alone. Going to leave mine unrooted-stock.
I just had an excellent session of Google Nav where it performed exemplary. My phone does all I need and remains within the rules as the OEM wants it.

I searched and did not find anything for the Inspire with this issue...
Not a n00b when it comes to flashing ROMs to various hardware, Tilt, Tilt 2, Nook Color and now my new HTC inspire..
I used the "One click" root process for the phone, and everything completed with no errors.
I am S-Off, and Eng S-Off as well.
I have ROM Manager installed (Latest from Market) as well as the latest CWM installed on the phone.
When I attempt to boot into Recovery, whether by using the Volume Down/Power and choosing recovery, or selecting it from ROM Manager, the phone restarts and sticks at the white HTC screen.
I have been unable to find a fix for this.
I know I am running the rooted stock ROM that the single click installs, as I am able to use it with no issues and install anything I want, etc..
Help?
Please post in the right section general. And there is a thread in there thats all about problem like this.
try about 10+ threads.
Sounds like you need to reflash your recovery. Turn your phone off completely, plug it in and seee if that brings up recovery.

Did you try re flashing recovery? adb reboot recovery?
I believe that what you see happening on my phone is a soft brick.
This is NOT the case. The phone reboots into Android just fine, if I remove the battery and reseat it.
It ONLY hangs at the White HTC screen when trying to do Recovery... That is the only issue I am encountering.

I'm a complete n00b at rooting and hacking on Android and the HTC Inspire is the first Android phone I've ever had. I've searched the forum and tried loading PD98IMG.zip files, using the HBOOT recovery, but I'm still having a nasty problem with my Inspire 4G. I'd really like any help if I can get it - I think I've been sweating bullets for the last 2 hours...
Here's the rundown of what happened:
I rooted my Inspire 4G this morning using the Ace Hack Kit and everything was working fine until I tried CyanogenMod7. After that, I somehow managed to get it all working again, but didn't end up liking Cyanogen because various programs (such as Android Market) kept crashing. I switched to the TPC Inspire 4G ROM, and everything was peachy again. However, I wanted to try and get the completely stock version of the Inspire ROM, and loaded that onto the phone. I noticed that it was missing the ROMmanager, so I ran Ace Hack Kit again. This is where the huge problem happened. While reloading the older version of the ROM (I think it was doing the radio), everything went black on the phone screen, and stayed that way. The terminal screen (I'm running OS X) didn't show any progress, so I rebooted the phone. Now, the phone starts up with the white HTC screen, then fades to black and stays that way. You can tell the screen is on because the backlight is there, but otherwise, I'm stuck.
I'm currently trying to re-run the Ace Hack Kit, but the terminal says that the device is offline, then sits at < waiting for device >. I've tried re-flashing to the original HTC ROM from the website, but it doesn't detect that the device is even attached to the computer.
If you can help, that would be great! I've had this phone for 3 days, and I'm freaking out that I've just destroyed it.
Just an update - I tried a hard reset (power + vol up + vol down) and I get the green LED on, and the phone vibrates 3 times, then it sits there with the green LED indicator and nothing happening to the screen.
Do a search for un-brick. I dont have an Inspire, but on my Infuse there are a few different ways to return to stock and also to un brick. And once you get it fixed calm down on all the rom switching maybe? I mean u said 3 days and you were flippin through em then attempted a stock rom then another Ace Hack. My advice is slow down, take a deep breath and read the forums. Do this before you make moves. Good luck buddy.

Did you not backup, b4 you tried flashing another rom? If u did, just hold ur volume down button and hit ur power button... should go into bootloader (hboot). Once there select the recover option. If you havent backed up, I belive theres a recovery you can download. I just had that same problem while trying to get to hboot, was just a user error.... take ur time and dont worry, I dont belive ur fully bricked.

Your mistake was trying to root again once you saw rom manager was missing. Rom manager is an app you can download from the market. Not every dev includes it in their roms. Go back to the hack kit thread, look in the op, and join his irc. He will help you.

Thanks - I talked with attn1, who wrote the hack kit, and he walked me through the process. Basically, I had to get the stock version of the PD98IMG.zip, which he provided.
Then, I followed the following steps (all typing is in terminal (I'm on Mac OS X):
1. Type: fastboot oem rebootRUU
2. The Inspire 4G went to a black screen with a chrome HTC logo.
3. Type: fastboot erase cache
4. Once that completes (the message says: erasing 'cache'... OKAY), type: fastboot flash zip PD98IMG.zip
5. That command flashes the Inspire 4G with the stock ROM. The phone will display the chrome HTC logo and a progress bar. Once it completes IN THE TERMINAL with the status OKAY, then type: fastboot reboot
6. Voila! HTC Inspire 4G is back to working condition. This method returned the phone back to stock mode, which means if you want to install custom ROMs and such again, you'll need to root it. Make sure to set the USB debugging on, and Connect to PC to Charging Only.
Thanks, attn1! Hope this will help others who get into this problem case.
Get the official ruu from htc. After that don't update and use simple root, this is better since if you brick it again you can go to fast boot and flash it back to inspire 4g rooted

I had this same problem (goes black and vibrates 3 times- except with a orange blinking light) before.
To fix it:
1. Completely shut down, remove the battery, and put a timer on for 10 minutes
2. Remove your microSD card from your phone, and put it in a card adapter for your computer
3. Put a ROM installer .zip on your microSD.
4. After 10 minutes is up, put your microSD in your phone, and turn it on
5. Go into H-BOOT, and select boot to recovery
6. Install by selecting the .zip let it do its thing
Hope that helped!

Ok, so I did my first root last night with my G2x and flashed CM7 onto it using the instructions here for GB. The process didn't seem to go through at first because it kind of froze for awhile, but when I took out the battery and put it back in it loaded up. (I understand I may have made a mistake here.)
I thought all was good but then I tried to boot up Clockwork recovery to flash the GAPPs zip and everytime I tried it wouldn't go through the screens it is supposed to.
I'd hold the down volume and power buttons and the first LG (white) would show. Then it would bring up a cyan colored horizontal loading bar under the LG. I continue to hold the buttons hoping to see the cyan LG but then screen changes to a box with an orange arrow pointing to an android logo. There is a loading bar under this as well. If I let go here it loads up CM7 but if I continue holding on it takes me to the S/W screen.
I've tried this multiple times but I've kinda given up. I even tried individually installing the apks from the GAPPS zip but only a few of them successfully installed.
At a loss .Please let me know what I can do.
Let me guess. You flashed CWM via ROM manager?
Follow he guide here and let us know how it goes:

Also, before you install the ROM use the wipe tool in my sig.
I appreciate the response but I did use that thread to flash it.

When it get to the point where "the cyan colored horizontal loading bar" let go of the volume and power button and see if it boots into CWM.
Ok, I tried that and it went to that android logo screen again. Then it went to a black screen and then the cyan LG logo screen. From there it booted up CM7.
I just noticed when I try to boot into Clockwork it erases everything I added to it including contacts and apps I installed.

I will unroot and try again. A few questions though:
I'm reading and it looks like I need to be able to boot into CWR to be able to unroot...is using ROM Manager a safe alternative?
And also, while I followed the instructions for flashing through the thread you provided last time, I read that I may need to erase/wipe certain types of data before I do so to avoid the market problems. Can someone provide me information on that?
I just want to make sure I do this right a second time.

No need to unroot... as long as your computer still detect your phone... just flash everything again... I mean since you want to root... I would just do all the rooting process again... and reflash clock work... don't use rom manager to flash clockwork mod...
Or
And since you can't get into clockwork... you can just try flashing clockwork again... no rom manager

Sweet, so I reflashed CWR and CM7 and I got my contacts back and several other minor issues were corrected.
I am experiencing a new problem now though. Whenever I try to download from the market it tells me "[App name] could not be downloaded due to an error."
What can be done to fix this?

Try flashing Google apps again. Cm7 doesn't include them in their builds.

Rom Manager is not a safe alternative. Stay with Nvidia ClockworkMod.
Its should be a blue lg logo when you have to let go of the buttons.

Every time before you re- flash a rom I would recommend doing a data/factory reset within clockwork recovery. then Wipe your cache. And then even a wipe of the dalvic cache under advanced settings. Then flash the rom then gapps. Then reboot. Its called doing a clean install. It just makes everything smoother when re- flashing. And if your apps ever not update like that again just fix the permissions in clockworkmod then reboot. It usually fixes it. And i don't recommend flashing directly from the rom manager. Do it from recovery instead. Hope this helps.

Similar issue, totally different outcome...
Ladies and Gentlemen (and low-lifes),
I have found myself in a similar situation, after recently flashing a ROM, to where I am now unable to boot into CW Recovery. The ROM flashed is working fine but when I attempt to boot into recovery I get a black screen and it never progresses beyond that. I have attempted to reflash of course via NVFlasher and from all indications it's been a successful flash. That said, the results remain the same... black screen.
FYI: I have not yet attempted to flash back to Stock Recovery.
•Current Rom - Owain's Domination v77 (a great ROM by the way)
•Current kernel - Harsh's 3.0.32
•Used Nullifier to prep device for ROM install (as I have been doing for sometime now)
If anyone has any experience w/this issue or any advice going forward I would greatly appreciate it.
UPDATE: (that was fast huh?) .................................................................................................................................................................................................
So I went ahead and flashed the Stock Recovery, tested and got access. I then flashed CWM 5.0.2.0 and to my delight was able to see the CWM console. I let go of the power and volume down buttons and the phone rebooted. Now the ROM will not boot, just sits in a forever cycle on the splash screen and the results continue to be the same as recently mentioned for attempting to get into the freshly flashed recovery.

Ok, I will bring my concerns to an end now. I forced CWM to remain in play by not letting go of the power and vol. down buttons then using my thumb to see if I could stroll through options in CWM. Once I accessed a few it remain stable. I nullified and re-flashed my ROM and all seems ok in my personal corner of the universe. I am now able to boot into CWM without issue.
