How worried are you exceeding your two GB cap? Do widgets such as engadget, stock htc weather, youtube, and other internet based widgets use up a lot of MBs?

Never exceeded 1.5GB on my Captivate, and that included judicious use of Mobile AP.
I used about .5GB the first day I got my Inspire, but I was using the crap out of it, plus I haev wifi at home
I have went over twice so far with my captivate.

Cool. AT&T doesn't charge you data through WiFi? I had problems with AT&T doing it with my blackberry torch.
I never went over the 2GB with my i4, but I didn't know how widgets and everything would affect the amount of MB usage.

man i really dont know what you are doing with the phone lol. I use 3g for browing pretty much all the time and play around with it. I never exceed 1 gig. The max I have used is 1.8 and that was tethering with my captivate.
I can't believe you all use so little! So far this month I've used 4275 MB on my Aria. I'd be screwed if I had to stick to a 2 gig limit

Yeah I let my wife use my line to upgrade and the person at the at&t store took my unlimited plan and put me on a 2Gb plan and I didn't realize it till I got the bill the next month and I had 2 10 gb increments billed to me and it hit me what they did. I have been pretty pissed of about it ever since.
Now I have to make sure I am in a WiFi connection every chance I get to stay below the 2 gb limit

not worried, but i called customer service and politely complained about iPhone users being offered unlimited data plans (to stay with at&t) while the rest of the at&t smartphone users are ignored. told them i felt like a second class customer. the rep opened a request to have my plan changed to unlimited. i should know something by 2/22. not holding my breath on this, but will continue to push it (politely) if they say "no".

I use wifi in a few rooms of my house but my Aria doesn't pick it up in the whole house.
I do tether sometimes when I am away but even when I don't, I listen to SiriusXM every day and I download and upload audio and video files.
Call AT&T customer care and tell them you want your unlimited back b/c it was removed without your knowledge. They should take care of it.

Depending on what I do, I can use from 60 kb (daily) to 200 if I try; I rarely use over 70mb aa day though.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
You should definitely get a data tracking widget or program; I use two different ones.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
Which ones do you use? Are they accurate?
The most I have ever used was about 700 MB in one month; that's with wireless tethering, too. I think it's because I live in EDGE-only KY.
And the worst part is that I have an unlimited data plan.

I ran into this same problem. I upgraded to the Inspire last night at a Wal-Mart and it ended up removing my $30 unlimited data/text. The woman that sold me the phone called AT&T and they opened a case with the department that's able to put it back on. I called later and spoke with a supervisor, and he told me that just the fact that a case was open, it was very likely I would get it back. I should hear back from them by 2/25 though. I also asked him if I went over my current 250MB that they put me on while this is being worked out if I'd be forgiven for overages and he assured me I would. If they decide to not give it back, I as well won't quit pushing it.

My contract recently expired and I am looking to upgrade. My question is, is the 2gb Data plan enough to support the Infuse, Atrix, or Inspire? I have read the other thread on this question, however all the responses were about getting unlimited data. I would get it but, being in school, i cant justify/afford the cost of buying an iPhone 2g. I have been looking for a fellow friend or developer in my area to lend me theirs but I am looking to get the new phone in a week or two.
So, in general, is the 2gb plan enough?
My day during the year, 8-3, classes, no major usage, mabey 30 mins internet.
4-10 moderate usage, mabey up to 1 hour usage. Internet, mabey an app or two, and possible Pandora a day or two a month. Tethering mabey 20 mins max 3 days a week or less. weekends, moderate usage, internet sparingly all day, mabey 1:00 max. Summer is similar to weekends.
What is the general opinion? Or personal experience.
I live in Florida and used Pandora a good amount of time during my drive to N Carolina and back as well as my Google Maps, and didn't get anywhere near the 2gb. I'm on my phone most of the day at work (730-4) and use the browser, Facebook app, and various other data using apps. The only problem you might run into is the tethering imo.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Totally enough, even with your usage. I have the same plan and I am a pretty heavy user day to day, I read xda for about 3 hours a day maybe watch like 4 YouTube vids, engadget app, Facebook, stream Pandora for like an hour... and yet the past 3 months I can only get up to using about 1. 5 Gigs.... trust me its enough

Can't you upgrade and keep your unlimited plan if you allready have unlimited I have upgraded more than ones and still have my unlimited data its grandfathered in if I had 2 gb cap I would had been over by 5 gb this mounth just think if you installed a rom its one third of a gb if you use the phone
Mr.Nun.Ya
it is enough, i use my phone all day and when i get the bill, its nowhere near 2gb.
Unlimited plans make you feel warm and fussy because you always know you won't go over. If you are aware of how you use the internet you will be fine. Me, I turn off my mobile network religiously it save massive battery life and all the apps that want to update can't. (if its in my pocket I don't care about someones facebook update) Second I use WiFi when I can: its free, normal much faster, I do not have 4g but I do have a 10m connection at home and a larger one @ the university I work at.
If you every want to check how much data you have used use this number and it will show you your data usage; *3283#
If you check that once a week you will never go over, or you can use an app like 3g Watchdog Pro(or lite) which is absolutely amazing...it shows you how much dat\ you used that day/week/month...it predicts how much you will use by the date you will be billed based on your current usage, calculates how much data you can use a day for the whole month without going over, it is a very nice app/widget to have
2gb DAta Plan
I constantly go over and I have 4gb, but I also am traveling and tether. Since I never had AT&T until now I was told I am not able to get unlimited which I think is stupid.
That's crap if I had a cap with att I would move to Verizon they have. no cap and the thunderbolt I don't no why you guys think it alright you probably think its OK to pay extra to tether how I use my data is my business its just a way to squeese more money from you
Mr.Nun.Ya
I also have the 2gig data plan, I have not came close to my limit at all. I am on my phone all the time, at least my wife says. The close I came to was 1 gig, that was re-downloading all of my google apps, before I swtich over to my WIfi.
I never use Wifi- because my broadband connection is slower than my ATT connection on the phone. Ihave an older unlimited data plan, and I use 7-8G in a typical month.
Verizon
I was told and have read on several websites that Verizon will be dropping the unlimited data plans and adopting a tiered system like AT&T. If you have your unlimited with AT&T right now, find a 3g smartphone that is acceptable and keep your unlimited. I made the mistake of not doing that and regret it. I do however really like my Inspire.
Lol I never had unlimited but I did what was posted and I use about 4gbs a month and have unlimited now

I've not had a problem using them and At&T has never questioned me either.
My kids watch so much YouTube on my phone that my data usage is pretty high each month...(I still have an unlimited plan)... so it's not unusual for me to go over 5 gigs or better.
But someone that jumps from not even a gig to over 5 all of a sudden might raise a few eyebrows.

If you don't have the unlimited data plan, I wouldn't recommend using it. I used it and SIGNIFICANTLY went over my data plan cap and was billed overage charges.
I got busted with AT&T using an iPhone... convinced them I had no idea what tethering was or jailbreaking, etc so they let me keep my unlimited plan. Even let me switch it when I got an Inspire after telling me I needed a "4G data plan", even though they don't have 4G... morons. Anyways, I think I'll try it on here. If you haven't gotten busted playing Live, I should be ok.

Don't count on 10 gigs as a soft limit. Companies are working towards eliminating unlimited plans, and eliminating the one in a <many many> stray customers who hog bandwidth hardly make any difference.
in my town AT&T sucks, coverage is completely spotty, we just got 3G about 2 weeks ago and the coverage is unbearable, in my house i get no service at all but when i go in the middle of town it will jump between 5 bars with 3G to 1-2 bars with edge constantly but when ever i go to a city with good 3G im tethering to my mac constantly and my data never goes over 1.5 GB even though i have the unlimited plan
I used WiFi Hotspot once when my home landline internet was on the fritz for a few hours. It was a nice backup.

I get ur point. But u know I've seen many posts here in some threads where I saw people bragging that they used way excess of 10GB and even as a replacement to home internet service. I was only indicating that as long as one doesn't abuse the network, he/she should be good. Sorry if what I said sounded differently than what I had in mind.
I've read a lot of post about at&t being a terrible network and blah blah blah. I want your opinion on it. I've been with at&t for a long time. I've been with them when was 'Cingular'. Now I've noticed since the atrix and inspire have came out, my network has been very inconsistent. Are you noticing this too? And is it enough to make you switch?

Still do/can. I don't use the phone part of my cell phones tho so I may have a skewed opinion. I think I currently have 4000+ Roll Over minutes

ATT is very dirty you should hear half the stories my girlfriend tells me when she gets home
One person had 600$ in long distance charges all because they didn't have a 5$ a month plan
And the worst part is the lady didn't make any of the calls someone tapped into her line and wracked all that up here's another one
Customer calls and complains that he's being charged overages inhospitable cell phone bill for data when he presumed he had unlimited turns out some store employee changed his account to the 4gb plan when he came into the store to add a line. Theres a period ROFL bahahaha
Sorry but any company that puts a limit in the internet is f'd up in my book whether or not its cell phone or home phone its just flat out ridiculous PERIOD
And for anyone with ATT home service I bet you got a lil 5$ a month service line protection plan on your bill and I bet if you ask to remove it'll still be there or it will be back in a matter of time.
They teach their (yes I do know the difference ) employees to slam and cram all kinds of Crap service plan just one of many little extra charges you will catch on your bill

I really haven't had any problems out of them. Of course, I'm not the one paying the bill either. Lol. If I have a problem my mother-in-law can get it corrected with no questions asked. If I was using mobile data more than WiFi, my speeds wouldn't be that drastically different. D/l speeds are around 3.5 mbps, both mobile and WiFi. U/l speeds are 1.5 mbps on mobile, and .3 mbps on WiFi. I had iWireless prior to being added to the account, which runs on the Sprint network, and out here in T county TN, Sprint's service is terrible. With ATT, I actually get service at places that Sprint doesn't cover. My opinion is, after researching plan options from ATT and Verizon, that with the new data plans, Verizon is the most money hungry carrier of em all. 100 dollars for 5gbs per month? At least ATT you get 2gbs for only 30 dollars. With the options we currently have with ATT, if we got the same thing with Verizon, we would be charged over 300 dollars a month.

Yeah, $30 is how much they charge us for the 2gb plan around here, which is around the Memphis area. I've just got the $15 200mb data plan as I only use data on WiFi exclusively. You have the "true" unlimited that ATT used to have. Users who had the plan back in their iPhone days, prior to upgrading to the Inspire, won't see their unlimited data capped. I think they feel it would be bad business to cap the data of former and current iPhone users with the old unlimited data plan. Good thing you got it when they still offered it.

So in April when i picked up my G2X i decided to go to the local Tmobile store to get my phone because i didnt want to wait for shipping and for once decided to save a few bucks and get the contract extension rather than pay outright.
when there setting everything up I was told I needed a new sim card for 4G.
I thought that was odd because I was already given a "new" 4G sim for that reason on my nexus one.
I specifically told the clerk i did NOT want the new 5GB plan because of the data throttling and wanted to keep my old plan. he said no problem.
I have since found out the hard way I am now on the 5GB plan and constantly get the throttle text message and its pissing me off.
Ive tried calling Tmobile and I always end up with someone who barely speaks English and doesn't understand what my problem is.
I explain i want my old plan and not to be data throttled and they read from a script explaining it doesnt cut off my internet or charge me extra.
has anyone dealt with this and succesfully got the old plan back?
even with constantly being on WIFI when its available ( and killing my battery )
i go over 5gb and it sucks.
Everybody got switched to 5GB, I don't think anybody wanted it either. You can't get unthrottled data plans anymore. The only thing you could do is "upgrade" to the 10GB plan.

Well that blows, i was under the impression if you dont change your plan they are obligated to give you the service you've always had.
I havent checked the 10GB price but considering what I am paying now I doubt I will be willing to pay it.
it sucks paying more money for lesser service.
so far in the last few months I feel like Tmobile, My bank, insurance & Sirius have all bent me over & screwed me without dinner or a thank you....
Just curious, how long have you had unthrottled data? I got switched to the 5GB plan back in October of last year.

How it was explained to me, T-Mobile always had the 5 gb limit. They just didn't enforce it automatically like they do now. It was hidden away in the fine print way back that 5 gb was the limit for high speed data, they just had no way of actually throttling til they got the 4g network up and running. So we are screwed. I can't even upgrade to the 10gb plan since I'm on and old myfavs family plan so its not an option for me.

thats what i THOUGHT i was still on. i was supposed to be on the myfaves plan with unlimited android from the G1 days.
seems like these days not only does your dollar not go very far but it seems like you have to take it and like it because there are no better options.
especially with cellular providers.
sucks I finally get a phone how i want and now i cant find decent service for it in south FL lol
The 10gig plan is an extra $60. I have 2 devices with this service And its still not enough. Got throttled in the first week this month. Off to buy a hotspot tomorrow.

Wait, it's $60 on top of what you're paying for phone/messaging ?
You are guys are lucky you don't get throttled until 5gb. The two major carriers in Thailand throttle you down to Edge speeds on 3G after reaching 2Gb on one and 3Gb on the other on their so-called unlimited data plans.
You can get a sonic hot spot for 20 a month???

I checked my plan for the first time in ages the other day; did not bother checking because it's been the same for the last 5 years (unlimited everything), and I too found that I was switched over to their 5gb. I'm usually on wifi but I'm not looking forward to getting throttled.

Hotspot has the speeds as the cell phone data plan. If you use 5gb in a week then the hotspot is not going help you. your going to pay $79.99 for 10gb of data with a hotspot.
Gotta feed the need. It itches for most

Now that ATT is throttling "over users", I started really turning on the WiFi on my Inspire when at home, just to stay on the safe side.
Today I get a letter that my Internet (cable) provider is limiting usage. Only good thing, limit at my contracted speed is 250GB. If one exceeds the limit, they get a letter. On the third overage, cost if $10 for 50GB.
Now I really have to be careful because I am using my PC, my Inspire and my Toshiba Thrive.
Screwed again.
whose your internet provider?
Suddenlink.
I heard about that, how ISPs are limiting data usage. Its pretty sad actually. Thank goodness I haven't received any letter.

wow good thing I got away from them I easily do 150gb in a month. Almost there for this month even.
You can thank the fcc for that... It's really getting annoying if you ask me

I must be old. I remember getting emails from my ISP for using 20GB.

Does this apply to Uverse? That's what we have, I do a lot of online gaming over Xbox Live, use my phone on Wi-Fi as does my mom and I download a lot of other stuff, to my knowledge we've never gotten a letter.

actually this convo should be on dslreports not inspire 4g. yes all service providers cap if you hit an excessive amount this has been known since weve had internet. if youre pulling 10G a day, you are far beyond online gaming an i can understand them shutting it down. Think about it if each person is pulling that much thats 3.6TB a year, thats expensive lol.

Why should this be on dslreports? It is about a cable provider for starters, and it is pertinent information for AT&T users of HTC devices that have been (or will be) throttled, who then, diligently start using WiFi on their devices to keep AT&T off their backs.

I agree with Darunion. This has nothing to do with the development of the Inspire 4G. This topic does not belong on this forum.
comcast is limited to 250 gig i never come close with phone and home network
Umm, you guys do realize just how big 250GB is right? I use my connection heavily and rarely see more than about 100GB most months. You have to be doing some serious downloading of DVDs or such to even think of hitting that limit. I use mine for 4 computers, 2 droids and netflix and I use Crashplan to backup my computers to the web.
250gb is not that much, especially if your are a Netflix / Hulu only person. Just one computer using Netflix as a TV replacement can easily put you over, not to mention Pandora and other usage. Cable companies are only doing this to curb streamers. There's a pretty good discussion on the Comcast forums about this. 250gb was fine 4 years ago, but today....not so much.
From what I've heard fios has no cap.

Yet... Give them time and they too will have data caps. Of course, as bandwidth grows, the caps get larger also. It's not about the amount of data used, it's about network congestion. If the network can't handle it, then they need to curb the heavy users to keep bandwidth for the rest of us.
start downloading multiple source codes for ics and aokp, and downloading/watching netflix, hulu,,,
it all adds up pretty quickly.
