Uninstalling Apps - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I uninstall apps, is registry cleared for good or does some of them remain like on Windows PC?
If so, is there an app to clean registry?
My friend wanted to try out my Nexus and installed bunch of useless apps.

There is no registry.

So uninstalling completely removed the app and misc files (like cache or data information for example) right?

Actually, it will depend on the app. A lot of apps leave stuff on your sdcard that don't get removed after an uninstall (presumably so that you don't lose the data in case you want to reinstall).
I'm actually not sure if the cache is cleared automatically just because you uninstall the app, but it will eventually as other stuff fills in if it isn't.
If there's some kind of space or privacy concern, I'd use recovery to wipe cache and dalvik-cache just to be sure.
If I get a chance I'll try uninstalling some app today and poke around in the cache/dalvik-cache to see if they go away for that app automatically.

CCleaner type app for android?

Does anyone know if a app, like the ccleaner for windows is available for android?
Now I know that android is linux based, therefore there is no need for a registry cleaner, but with the constant install and then removal of apps (now i am assuming here) there must be some sort of footprint left behind which needs deleting?
thanks for any help and advice
eh...the only thing I could think of is maybe "CacheMate"

I second Cachemate. Been using it for months now and finally bought the "Pro" version. More like donation-ware. It was especially useful when I felt I was running out of space after app installs; however, now that I'm running an AOSP rom and have the option of using Apps2SD, space on the phone is less scarce. Either way, I run it every now and then to clean things up, particularly before making a Nandroid backup.
i am not sure if this is right because i am also quite new to android, but:
android is not windows. When you install a programm there is one .apk.. probably it creates a folder on the sd.. thats it. There is no registry, programms do not mess around @ system files.
Uninstalling means deleting the apk.. perhaps you have to remove the folder @ sdcard yourself.. thats all i guess.
I installed a couple of roms without wiping and many many apps, and my system is still clean what i can see (and fast like on the first day..)
nice one!!
Thanks for that, i'll download CacheMate and have a look.
Cachemate is good, but Titanium really works (root needed)
I paid for Titanium because my brand new Samsung Galaxy S 4G started having low phone storage on the first day. Couldn't move a bunch of stuff, so I just did Superoneclick and rooted it, then installed Titanium. I was able to free up space on the phone itself (it's loaded with bloatware) by moving some stuff, but it also has a cache cleaner that got rid of another 25 MB of data that I didn't need. So, short story is, if you just need to clean you cache, cachemate is probably fine, but if you need more robust options for system maintenance, consider Titanium.
Well when you uninstall an application you not only have the .apk in /data/app/ but the application data in /data/data/ which is removed when you properly uninstall the application, not just deleting the apk. The "cache" you are seeing is browser, maps etc. data. You can manually do this in application manager by clicking the name then clear cache.
The only extra data you might have would be if the application has data on the sdcard which I find most applications do not remove if it's an external download such as skins. So there really is no need for any type of cleaning tools, none of which would clean out anything on /system/ unless it's a rooted application so there should be no need for that.
i tried cachemate and i can say that phone was reborn after it... it started to fly... 13 mb was cleared...
There was a another app called aCCleaner. It's even better

If your device is rooted then you can try out SD Maid.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013063
It deletes leftover folders from uninstalled apps from the SD card.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Cachemate never seems to work for me. It always say my cache has been recently cleared and there is nothing to clean although I didnt set it on auto or clean it before. Werid.
Why looking for alternatives if you can try CCleaner on your Android device, try this link http://goo.gl/TIR4pk as its in beta, but still its working fine. If you still want to CCleaner like alternatives for android try this link http://goo.gl/LMmUho
Might be this help you
Do not use applications that might spoil the phone ... after all, remember that Android is based on Linux. so it is already Optimized for his trial ... try CacheMate.
Try clean master. It's pretty good!

Gmail widget fix

I had the same problem as many with the missing gmail widget. Here is how I fixed it:
Apps / Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset
PLEASE NOTE this makes your tablet as if it was brand new outta box so please backup any data you don't wanna lose. Everything took me about 10 minutes to get setup again and the gmail widget is now listed under widgets and working once again. Market synced all my installed apps from market back automatically.

thats unacceptable for those of us who actually use this device for more than just the programs included with the stock rom.

Does that action delete/ format your files in the TF? How about the files on my SD card?
Rio
It wipes everything off the TF and what your left with is a brand new 3.1 installation. It didn't touch my microsd cards data. I know this is not an ideal solution for the power users out there but it may help out some until Asus issues a fix.
Deletes data off the internal storage, but not the sd card.

it's called backing up your data and reinstalling your apps. It's a very common thing to do.
download app list backup from the market, that will give you market links for all of your installed apps, and you can download mybackup pro to backup some data.
and BTW, to everyone doing this, backup your internal memory becuase it will be erased as well to my understanding.
going to go ahead and do this when i get home tonight.
Fyi by default Google backs up your app data. So it should automatically redownload the apps you had and have all your settings. Unless of course you pirated them, at which point you're not allowed to complain
The backup/sync option is meant to only restore ones you purchased via the market, not free ones. Although honestly, it's restored a few of the free ones (not all) I've installed too, the last time I reset, so I'm not sure what to think any more.

For me it restores my free ones as well (I have 2 paid apps and 50 free ones, it restores them all).

Note that it does not restore app data. You need root for that and Titanium Backup and if you have root there are other ways to get the widget back. Any save states (ie. completed levels in Angry Birds etc..) will be lost. Any settings and such as well. I'm not saying don't do it, but just getting that out there for those that don't know. 'Restore' is really the wrong word for this, it's just re-installing so you don't have to.
Sounds like they've changed their policy then if it's restoring all apps now. That's certainly welcome news.

Exactly why I said factory reset is an unacceptable solution.
Titanium backup or backup pro isn't a solution because it requires root to backup app data, but if you have root you could force install Gmail widget directly without factory reseting in the first place
It is an issue to factory restore things, because there is no way to back up app data without root.
For example, playing games on your tablet, there is no way to recover that saved file unless there is root
Thats why I believe, factory resetting is the last resort resolution and really isn't a fix..
And they always make rooting so difficult, but obtaining app data to restore later or just to backup is the best part of root

Still no way to root 4.0.4 without losing data?

Every previous version could be rooted without losing data but it seems nexus S cant be after the latest update. I have so many games it would be so sad to lose all my scores and saved progress. So what are we supposed to do?
Back up with Ti Backup and restore app+data?
You can root without loosing data if you already have the bootloader unlocked. If not, do as the upper post said, Titanium backup and backup apk+data
But I thought titanium backup doesnt work for non-rooted phone??
My bootloader is locked.

That won't work. /data is not accessible without root permission. Some games have data stored on the sdcard, many do not. Until something is released (if it ever will be, considering the ease of rooting a nexus s), you don't really have options to keep your saves.

Oh lol, nevermind, forgot about that. Then i guess you're pretty much out of luck...
Like Harbb said, backup the SD since some games save the games in the SD card (like gameloft games) and the rest is lost.

Ah. Read it wrong. Probably shouldn't be drinking and giving advice. Haha.
This may be worth a try since you're pretty much out of luck saving your data with a locked bootloader. In the Settings, go to Backup & Reset, tick the checkbox "Back up my data" which I think will back up your apps data and other settings to your Google account. Be sure to tick the "Automatic restore" checkbox too. I would wait a while (maybe at least a day or so) for it to back up your apps data to Google servers. When you re-install the app from the PlayStore using the same Google account, I think it will restore your apps data. I never tried this before. If it works, awesome. Maybe try it out by uninstalling a small app with user data, then install it again to see if the data is restored.
Does not restore app data like your game stats etc.

While it might manage to save some kind of data, i've tried it a couple of times and got little beyond my wallpaper back (however it was nice to get my wallpaper back ). I believe you can see all of the data it saves on your Google Dashboard.

Erase app completely without changing roms?

Hi, was just wondering if it was possible to erase an app completely? In other words, say I uninstall the app but when I re-install it, it's tied to my phone still somehow. Other than changing roms completely and then installing the app, any way besides that? I have no specific app in mind at this point.

Well u have to be more specific.
System app or non-system app?
In simple terms:
Non system apps will or can save files to ur SD card. So if u know what file it is, then if u erase the file then it will be a fresh install of the app without the automatic restore or recognition.
System apps work similarly but can get a bit more complex with the SD card file location and its deletion.
Not to mention some apps are tied into ur Google account which can get more complex if u have ever saved it to ur Google account at some time in ur phone's life span.
So, which kind of app is it?
Good luck

Be sure to tap "Clear Data" first before uninstalling the app.

What's the best app for uninstalling bloatware on a rooted device?

An app that will remove a system app with "ALL" its files safely and permanently.

Titanium Backup Pro is always a good go-to. Really, there are no shortages of apps that do what you want, though. Do you have other criteria?

That's about the only requirement...an app that will remove every single file that an app installed.
I factory reseted my phone yesterday and going through the memory, i noticed folders and files of apps that had already been uninstalled long ago, as well as ones that weren't but i assumed the factory reset would take care of it. So i am guessing some apps (all?) leave traces behind. Thats what i don't want.

Yeah, almost every app will add some sort of files to folders. Places like /storage/internal/Android/ or /storage/internal/data/data/
If you go to App Info, or use Titanium Backup (TiBu), and clear data and cache THEN uninstall, you should get rid of the vast majority of folders and stuff the app(s) installed. SDMaid has CorpseFinder, which can find orphaned files.

Yeah, im a little OCD about this...im looking for zero trace. There's gotta be something out there that can do it. SD Maid, i dont see how it can get everything everytime because really, how can it know? Especially when the app developer doesn't want the files to be known.

Unfortunately, I doubt you'll find anything that's 100% ALWAYS going to scrub 100% of everything.
You can hedge your bets and reformat your internal storage every few weeks if you get paranoid about space and orphaned data.
