I got my first real smart phone about a week ago, it was a USC Samsung Mesmerize. Yesterday I stumbled upon rooting when trying to figure out how to remove useless pre installed apps. All I really want is a slim & fast version & to be able to keep my navigation.
I've had experience with flashing; Xbox 360 & PSP's. So I kind of jumped into this and ended up bricking my phone. Or damn close.
From looking at the back of my phone it says Galaxy S, so I went in that section and downloaded/flashed this originally (caused brick):

I did everything up to step 7, except it wouldnt boot past the splash screen.
So then came panic time...
I eventually reflashed with a new rom for the correct phone, This one to be exact:

My question is:
What have I really done now that I run on this rom?
I still cant uninstall preloaded software.
I would be willing to flash a new rom so I can have a faster phone.
But really no one makes it clear enough in there guides about how this process actually works.
my best guess is after I flashed with that rom I will be able to upgrade to a better rom?

First off, consequences will never be the same...
You are now running a STOCK (leaked) 2.2 ROM, with a stock kernel and USCC App Bloat.
If you want a fast Android 2.2 with stock apps removed, do this:
1. Flash the EA11 + recovery via Odin, following the steps here.
2: Download the EA11 voodoo kernel found here and flash.
3: Boot into recovery and run update.zip (this will push you to a red clockwork recovery)
HINT: If you aren't familiar with clockwork recovery, the controls are slightly different. You use still use the volume buttons to navigate, but the power button is now used to execute selections and the search softkey to go back.
4: select install .zip from sdcard
5: select the voodoo .zip and confirm
This will install the new kernel and replace your recovery (which used to require booting into the Samsung recovery before making your way to the clockwork recovery by installing update.zip from sdcard) with a clockwork recovery that will look identical to the one you had after running update.zip, but can enable your newly acquired lagfix.
6: enable voodoo lagfix, and rejoice!
6: Optionally install the Pick and Pack ROM found here. (I WOULD!)

Also, the payed version of Titanium Backup will let you "freeze" stock apps, so they don't appear in your menus, and they won't run, but you can "thaw" them whenever you like.
PS - FROYO EA11 is a leaked Android 2.2 ROM for the Mesmerize. Google names Android releases after deserts, like Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, etc.
Voodoo is a name of the kernel which changes your EXT2 partition (old school) to EXT4 (new school), and makes your file system much faster.

OK, first of all, welcome. You've come to the right place to do several things. The first of which is to learn. Don't freak out. You're phone is in good hands here in this forum. Unless you really try hard, you can't do much to actually bork it up so bad that we can't fix it.
So, what you have done up to this point is update your phone to the leaked 2.2 firmware. It's not a ROM, it's actually the full firmware. If you want to remove bloat, the easiest way is to now install my EA11 Pick-n-Pack ROM, which already probably lighter than you want it. The good thing, is that it also has an addons pack that you can download to put anything back on that you want. Everything is there in easily flashable zip files. You just have to look inside if you don't see the actual name of something in particular. (ie. calendar is in SamsungandTouchWiz.zip) Now if you want faster with your new light weight ROM, go with the EA11 Voodoo kernel to help boost you up as well. This isn't a final build, as we don't have source code yet so understand this is just a small improvement on the stock kernel. Now, if you want to get all the way back to stock 2.1, might I suggest this thread to help with that. And for some help getting to know a little about everything, pop over to the irc channel in my signature and talk to anyone that happens to be there. We're here to help. If they don't answer, they've probably stepped away. Some of us hang out there and leave the computer idle while we're doing other things.

first off...welcome...second if i would have done that i think i may have left a mess in my pants...but seems like you got it running good again plz trust me when i say listen to phidelt82, he will not give you any wrong advise...because of him and a few others, my phone kicks ass and im actually trying to learn how to make themes and roms (dont know much but learning), so yea...you came to the right place to make your phone truly your (with there software...lol)

the voodoo kernel is modified with a lag fix. it will speed up your phone a bit. there is a program in the market called quadrant. run the full benchmark and you will get an idea of how your phone stacks up against others and will also give you a base score for your phone. if you do not have voodoo kernel installed your score will be around 800-900, after voodoo your score will be up around 1500.
the pick-n-pack rom lets you addon via the pnpaddons file, stuff you want on your phone prior to flashing. you pick what you want and flash it.

the leaked froyo and the voodoo kernel are very nice, i wouldn't go back to eclair 2.1 unless you needed to return the phone to uscc for whatever reason.

Just an update guys, Thanks to phidelt82 I am now running 2.2 PnP w/ Voodoo Kernel.
The diffrence is night and day, used to get slow w/ a little lag every now and then. Now its always fast. Thanks again.

and dont forget for roms you may flash... you can not UNINSTALL phone apps..... via the 'manage applications' menu.
you have to use a program like Root Explorer and physically DELETE them from the /system/app folder along with other folders they reside in.
only Cyanogen (i think) allows for uninstalling for actual phone programs.

You can also un-install stock apps with Titanium Backup.
Also, it seems like you're rushing into this a little bit.

Not to bust your balls but its really rfs not ext2. Ext 2 is faster than ext 4 actually.

Btw is battery life a problem for anyone else? Luckly I have charging availible most of the time. I work as a production manager and starting at 7 by 8:00 the phone is at 89%
no programs running according to task manager, ram cleared, about 4 5mins calls

Some people have had battery issues with 2.2, some haven't.
I personally did, so I flashed back to 2.1

So... believe me, I know I'm an idiot for doing this. When trying to install Voodoo for official 2.2.1 I accidentally flashed the 5.5 for GT-I9000 that I forgot to delete when I was first starting to mess around with attempting to install voodoo, before doing much research.
When I tried to reboot it just sat at the I9000 boot screen forever and started to get hot so I pulled the battery.
I rebooted and came to a screen with lots of error messages from CWM on the bottom of the screen and the stock recovery options at the top.
When I try to reboot it just sits at the I9000 boot screen forever.
I tried reflashing 2.2.1 with ODIN as described in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881064 That doesn't seem to get very far.

I also flashed Voodoo5.5 to my Epic! Please Help!
I obviously didn't do my homework and flashed the latest voodoo kernel to my epic. I'm running a Rooted Epic w/ Fyoyo and have clockwork mod. So here's how it went: The kernel flashed (said it installed )and phone returtned to clockwork mod. I rebooted and phone stuck in a boot loop just as yours was. I have to pull the battery to shut the phone off. I can get into clockwork mod....where do I go from here? I have the phone backed up with titanium, which is great if I can get it to boot up. Please Help. Thanks.

Flash the correct kernel for your phone, that will fix you up. If you need any more help with that, you should post in the epic forum - since this is the mesmerize forum .

You were even then a step ahead of me. Until I read this thread, I didn't even know that was the wrong Voodoo, in spite of it saying GT-I9000, I just figured that was the default behavior of Voodoo. XD I would have gone home tonight, maybe tomorrow, and kept beating my head against it, wondering why it wasn't working. XD
The Newbie Guide from bdemartino doesn't seem to specify---which version of Voodoo did you go with, and where did you get it from? The only Froyo Voodoo kernels I can find on the Project-Voodoo site are the 5.5 ones for the GT-I9000.
If you are on an i500 (fascinate, mesmerize, or showcase) you can flash any of the EC10 based kernels in the fascinate forum here on xda. Just remember that if you are on a touchwiz based rom (stock, PnP, etc) you need to make sure you use a touchwiz compatible kernel. Off you are running AOSP you must use an AOSP compatible kernel.

Like the OP, I too flashed the wrong Voodoo kernel, the one for the GT-I9000. When I flashed it, I got the robot voice, and then it wouldn't complete the boot process.
So I panicked. I followed the instructions in the post titled "Files to get your Mesmerize back to stock 2.1 and 2.2.1", with the exception of disabling lagfix.
Everything seems to be working okay now, with one exception. I can't get the correct Voodoo lagfix working. I can get the kernel installed, but I never get the robot voice for the conversion.
I have BLN working so it seems like voodoo is installed, but my quadrant scores seem to indicate that it is not.
Help?
If that were me, and I'm certainly no expert, I'd start by taking a Titanium backup of all your apps. Next I'd boot into recovery and disable lagfix if you still can; even if the actual lagfix itself isn't working, just turn the setting off. Then I'd try to flash the stock 2.1 (or 2.2.1 as you prefer) with stock kernel and stock recovery, to treat it like a brand new phone (not sure if you did that or grabbed the stock + custom recovery). Then, just start the customization process over from scratch. Finally, once you've got it tweaked, load up Titanium again and bring over all your apps.
That is IF I understand it all correctly; if I'm telling him wrong, someone please chime in and correct, or confirm. XD (jrusch, I might wait till someone can confirm or deny my instructions, but I figured I'd least give you some food for thought)

I'm pretty sure your system is either still in EXT4 or it thinks it is, and that's why disabling voodoo through CWM isn't doing anything for you - what has worked for me in the past is injecting the empty file named "disable-lagfix" into the clockwork folder on your SD Card, then rebooting. It should then disable it, then I would do a clean odin flash to make sure everything is working properly, then you should be able to pick up where you left off (adding voodoo, custom ROM etc.)
This has happened to me in the past when I've forgotten to disable lagfix and tried using odin to go to stock (this returns your kernel to stock and gives you issues because the internal file system is still formatted in EXT4 but the odin flash tries with the stock RFS format, and that's where the problem occurs.)
I used Root Explorer to create a new file named "disable-lagfix" in the clockework folder and rebooted. I then did a clean odin flash, etc.
I still can't get voodoo lagfix to work. When I boot to recovery (CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v2.5.1.x) the voodoo menu shows:
Voodoo lagfix is actually: disabled
next boot: enabled
But at the next boot it doesn't do the conversion.

I don't know if creating the file with root explorer will work, I had to create an empty file in my linux box and renamed to "disable-lagfix" (no quotes) once that file is in the clockwork folder and you reboot you should hear the sound of it being disabled - if you don't hear the voice then something is wrong with the file or where you put it.
right now you're stuck with it enabled, if you have the voodoo control app you can check to see if using the toggle in that app will work, but I'm guessing you're going to have to do it the manual way as stated above.
I still can't get it to work. I created the "disable-lagfix" file on a linux box and then copied the file to the sd card into the clockwork folder. I still can't get lagfix to disable/enable.
When I boot a voodoo_log.txt file is created, does this give any clues:

WTF? Do you even have a Mes/Showcase?
Sounds like someone didn't check which forum they were in after they Googled.
You probably need to look around in this forum instead.
To all i500 users.... don't go to the project voodoo site looking for voodoo kernels. Those are generic or made just for OTHER phones. Any and all voodoo kernels you flash should be found either in this forum or the fascinate forum. This goes back to the old DO NOT FLASH PACKAGES FROM OTHER PHONES…

I have a question regarding Voodoo flashing methods, specifically relating to Odin & CWM. The Voodoo website (which contains the INCORRECT kernels for our I500s, I DID gather that already ) recommends placing the file directly onto the SD card, renaming it "update.zip" and using stock recovery to flash it. I have noticed that this sentiment is not reflected here are all - everyone seems to recommend using CWM Recovery and/or flashing everything with Odin. What gives?
If someone with a stock EC10 ROM just wanted the benefits of the Voodoo conversion, and isn't really interested in flashing a new ROM, is it really necessary to install CWM and Odin, or will the stock stuff work? From what I've gathered, this is all the OP was really trying to do from the start.
BTW, yeah, it's my first post, and yes I've been reading a lot, but definitely not nearly enough. I'm very impressed with the level of assistance forum members are willing to provide, but I, like many others, want to make sure I have it 100% correct before I turn my phone into a very fancy, very worthless piece of silicon, glass and plastic. I was having a hell of a time figuring some of this stuff out, so I decided to try to put some information in a solid place to find it again. Hope this helps some others out. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong about anything. I am simply putting what I understand to this point.
Terms:
Voodoo - A different recovery similar to clockwork (see post below)
CWM - ClockWork Mod (refers to being able to flash with clockwork recovery)
Lagfix - ?????? No idea what this is or what it does. Just see people saying to disable it. (see post below)
Odin - Sofware that can flash your phone. It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11872936&postcount=2
Download mode - Mode Used to flash phone using ODIN. Open Odin, remove battery, plug phone into USB port, hold down volume down key until screen comes up on phone and you see a com port active in the first block of odin.
Recovery Mode - This works for both STOCK and Voodoo. Hold down the volume up key + Home Button + Power button. Samsung will appear then disappear, and reappear again, this is when you let go of the buttons.
ED1 - Stock rom that came with phone
ED2 - Stock Rom - First update available
EE4 - Stock Rom - Second update available.
From what I learned so far, root is easily aquired by flashing down to ED1 using this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085190 and Odin
When using Odin you only need to insert the file, by clicking the PDA button. All other settings can be left alone.
The Droid Charge comes stock with Android 2.2.1 AKA "Froyo" which allows for flash and other improved functions.
Gingerbread is hopefully the next version 2.3 which should be a great treat for our Charge's. I was getting better performance, better battery life, and the ability to run some programs such as netflix that I cannot get to work on my froyo build right now (maybe I'm doing something wrong?) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150

I'm not a noob myself, but this just caught me off guard. I've been flashing roms since windows mobile 2003. I even made a few myself. I've owned other Samsung Android devices, but recently been using Motorola's so I have that down, but this one caught me off guard a bit.

Good idea. Let me help ya with a correction or two, and maybe a clarification.
Voodoo isn't a recovery, it's the lagfix. Techinically, Voodoo refers to Project Voodoo, an attempt at improving the Galaxy S phones:

But, for the Charge (which isn't a Galaxy S phone), when you see Voodoo referenced, they're only talking about the lagfix:

When you see people talking about disabling it, it's because they are going back to stock ROM, which doesn't support it.
Root can also be acquired by simply flashing directly to any ROM that has it built in, you don't have to be at ED1 any more. You could be at ED2 already, and flash Altered Beast using Odin, and you will be rooted. Soon we should see pre-rooted ROMs with EE4.
CWM is an alternate recovery, which, as you said, is generally used when you go in to recovery mode. A custom Android recovery basically replaces the stock recovery with one that lets you do all you can do with the stock recovery, plus a plethora of more options to give you a lot more control on your device. With a custom recovery, you can install official and unofficial ROMs as well as other updates including apps, themes, kernels etc. using zip files, wipe not just user data but pretty much every partition on your device, mount the storage card for USB mass storage access without leaving recovery, partition your SD card, wipe Dalvik cache and battery stats, fix permissions, perform, manage and restore backups and so on.
For those coming from CWM on other systems, you should know you cannot currently do backups and restores with it - that's being worked on.

The lagfix is done through Voodoo. It converts the Samsung system files from rfs to ext4. Which basically makes it run faster with no lag. Hence the Lagfix term. Depending on the kernel you're running, that would make you enable/disable Lagfix. Some kernels only run with rfs system files. Others run with the ext4 files. I'm a noob when it comes to the Samsung way of life, but I've learned a TON here and over on androidcentral. I'm coming from a rooted and ROM'd D1 myself. So I'm quite familiar with the way things are done on Motorola's.

I just got my EE4 update but hungry for root. I wanted to try altered beast but I'd rather have a bone dry system to work up to. I'm also waiting for Gingerbread so I can do netflix. I had it on my droid 2. Also want to see overclocking.

Ty, I'm a total noob, and I have spent hours and hours reading threads just trying to find out how to boot to recovery mode. This is most definately, exactly what i have been searching for! This noob thread is GENIOUS!

I was really unhappy with my phone until I found this site, and learned how to modify my Charge. Y'all ROCK. (i know about the ty buttons, and i'm going to go back and hit it up for everyone thats helped!)
A voodoo kernel can also have sound and color enhancement which need to be enabled by the kernel. An app called voodoo control from the market helps to tweak the sound.

Gingerbread AOSP MIUI 1.6.24 MTD Port
Ported to: Mesmerize (still having issues with Showcase port)
Please note: The 1.6.24 links currently posted are not my work! I just couldn't correct the eri.xml in framework-res.apk to remove "Verizon Wireless" from the top bar (cosmetic I know, but it bugged me--I'm picky like that), and... BDE sorta had his port done several hours before mine anyway. I can't take any credit whatsoever for these links, this is all his porting work.
WARNING: READ BEFORE FLASHING!!
This ROM was designed using the newer (for us) yaffs2/ext4 filesystem. Excepting CM7MTD, no other ROM uses this filesystem. As a result, this ROM uses CWM 4, and once you flash, you CANNOT flash any other ROM from Recovery. Should you have issues with the flash, or want to return to a different non-MTD ROM, you will need to Odin all the way back to stock. See post #2 for instructions.
SHOWCASE USERS: This is especially critical for Showcase users, as Cell South has prevented Odin flashing packages for the Showcase. IF YOU USE A CELLSOUTH SHOWCASE AND WANT TO FLASH BACK TO A DIFFERENT ROM, FIND A WORKING ODIN PACKAGE FIRST.

ROM Details
Update Schedule: MIUI receives weekly official updates, and Andmer has said he intends to port them to the Fascinate on that same schedule. I intend to port from his work on that same schedule, and once my overlay is fully worked out, it should take me only as long as it takes to apply it and upload. This thread will be updated every time a new ROM is released. I'll try to keep one or two previous week's ROM links just in case.
Radio: This ROM does not flash a radio, so it should use whatever radio you had before you flashed. This ROM is built for a Mesmerize/Showcase radio (making it an actual Mesmerize port), so if you're using the Fascinate EC01 radio, you'll want to either flash the EC10 or EE19 radios (typically by flashing the stock versions of those ROMs). Don't worry if you flash those ROMs; everything else (except the radio) will get overwritten.
Recovery: In order to support the yaffs2/ext4 filesystem, this ROM uses CWM 4. As a result, the normal "three finger Recovery" method does not work. Similarly, although the ROM includes a "Reboot into Recovery" menu option after holding power, that does not boot into recovery. The only method of getting into recovery at this point is to either use ADB or a Terminal Emulator app.
Within Terminal Emulator, type the bolded, underlined text:
su (enter; this grants SuperUser rights to Terminal Emulator)
reboot recovery (enter)
This should properly reboot the phone into Recovery mode.

How to Flash
Copy the ROM to your SDcard.
Reboot phone into recovery, flash ROM as normal.
Make sure to wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache if you are coming from a non-MTD ROM, and possibly even CM7MTD.
Flash MIUI ROM from SD card.
The "MIUI" branded flash script will appear, and quickly disappear. THIS IS NORMAL. This verifies if CWM 4 is installed (on the first time through it will not be), and if not, installs it. The phone should reboot once again into recovery, but it will be standard CWM 4 Orange recovery.
Flash the ROM from your SD card once more. Note that the softkeys have changed; use the Search key as "Enter". The flash should proceed as normal.
1.6.24.1: Flash the 1.6.24.1 patch to correct all sensors.
Reboot phone when complete.
When your phone reboots, you should see the normal Samsung logo, and then a Galaxy S/CyanogenMod 7 logo. This will be followed by the MIUI.us boot screen, which is a moving starfield with a spinning globe.

HOW TO GO BACK TO NON-MTD ROMS

Things you'll need:
Odin
Working Odin package for your phone model
If you don't already have these, here are some links (sorry, Mesmerize stock ROM only):

Whatever Odin package you use must have a full bootloader included in the flash. EC10 should work, EE19 may not. I'm unable to advise which Showcase Odin package would work, I'm not familiar enough and they're not generally available.
STEP-BY-STEP
I'm writing these for the Odin newbie in mind. Experts, as long as you check "Repartition", you know the drill.
Open Odin. This does not need to be installed, simply run.
Pull off the back from your phone, remove the battery.
Connect the USB cable (best with the Samsung one that came with your phone), and hold Volume Down until you see the phone say "Download Mode". A little box should turn Yellow in Odin, signifying it detects the phone and is ready to flash it.
Click the PIT button. Locate the path to the PIT file extracted from the ZIP you downloaded above (or previously) to populate that field.
Click on the PDA button. Locate the path to the TAR.MD5 file extracted from the ZIP you downloaded above (of previously) to populate that field. Do NOT click on PHONE, Phone should be empty.
Make sure Re-Partition is checked. We want to overwrite the previous MIUI flash, and Re-Partition is what lets us do that fully.
Click the Start button. Let it proceed through the whole flashing process, which is approximately 10 minutes. You'll see "Complete!" in Odin and your phone's screen will go blank once it's finished.
For thoroughness' sake, I'm including the below steps. Again, experts could potentially circumvent, but below is the failsafe way.
Re-insert battery, boot phone. Allow it to boot into Blue (stock) recovery. it's okay if it says it can't mount "HIDDENSDCARD"; it's done the rest of the setup it needs to. If you're just staying with the stock ROM and recovery, you're done.
If you want a custom recovery:
Follow steps 1-7 above, skipping over step 4 (no PIT file needed), and flash your recovery of choice. You should now be able to flash whichever custom ROM you were on before, or restore from a Nandroid backup.
It is absolutely mandatory that you follow these steps exactly to properly get off of GB MIUI MTD (or CM7MTD for that matter) so that you can flash another ROM. Attempting another method or not following these steps implicitly will result in a bricked phone and you will have to follow this guide to fix it.

I wonder if flashing to the cm7 then trying to flash this would work better. Using the cm7 you can use rom manager to install the miui, so im gonna try that.

Just wanted to start off and say a BIG THANKS for LinuxBozo and his amazing infuse mod which lets us use the other samsung roms (JVQ restricted )
I have been experimenting ALOT with various roms and thought i would share some of which i have tested out so far, the only one which gave me some issues was Sensation 2.0 , seems like when you reboot, sometimes you get no netwrok, then reboot, and icons are missing, so its a question.
Obviously this isnt really an OFFICAL rom for the Infuse, but id like to know if anyone else has had nice experience or recommendations for use with this dude's rom.

Just wanted to throw it out there I ran a JVP based ROM without issue for an hour or so. The only thing I had to do was add my APN settings back & all was well. Someone may need to test this a bit more but my experience went well.

Hellraiser uses the same Rogers RIL that Infused v2 does, so probably not. (RIL is one of the things that gets swapped out.)
It's often hard to tell for sure because many frameworks won't show HSPA+ even if the RIL/modem are operating in that mode. Hell, even our original Froyo ROMs were broken in that way - they displayed UMTS when in HSPA+ mode. (UMTS is plain vanilla 3G.)
GingerReal - V7.1.4 JVQ
Been running GingerReal V7.1.4 JVQ with Infusion GB kernel and I must say it's snappy. I have not had a single problem with anything. And from what I read Quadrant scores don't mean much, but I got a 3500 OC at 1.6. without Stagefright. I did'nt know Stagefright was til I Googled it. But my phone is very fast and I am very happy. Thanks Linux

Which ROM did you test for JVP , i might give it a whirl, i finally finished going through all those roms, The Vibrant rom wasnt very exciting, and seemed to lack the extended power menu drop down which has Reboot, recovery download mode and such, thats a big thing for me.
Darky was my favorite so far,I might try Sensation. If anyone wants to test out a couple JVP roms and try adding in the APN settings, lets see what comes up and post which rom you tested.
Thanks everyone for their input on this, im getting more interested now and i will be trying to use the Infusion Kernel with some of these roms and see if i get a performance boost.
Im not sure if its just me, but whenever i reboot ANY of those roms which are installed with Linux's software , it seems sometimes the icons on the app drawer l ike disappearing, then when i reboot, apps reappear, but the Network to ATT gets cut off, then i reboot again, and sometimes its normal..........Any ideas?

BTW, the default behavior in Sensation is no extended power menu, but if you use the app "Theme Settings (included in the ROM) you can change this.
As to the other issues - that's a new one, I haven't seen it before.

I chose it because I saw that the ROM included the background effect from the SGSII, which while I have the SGSII & this feature seems to throw my photos to the way over saturated side - its more appealing for home screen settings and every day use since everything just looked almost wet or gooey. But the setting didn't work I imagine a kernel conflict, but I'm sure this could be built into one of our ROMS later and I wouldn't mind helping out with putting it together.
Overall I thought this ROM was a little laggy for the phone, I'm sure there are others out there that could run MUCH better or smoother.
I find it funny that we get a stock phone and find it boring so we flash a brand new phone to something completely different within an hour and when the next phone comes out we want their stock stuff so we can see how it is on OUR phone...HAHAHA -addicted

I think those are controls for Voodoo Color which:
1) Is extremely difficult to implement on our device (significantly different screen)
2) Is not necessary on our device - our screen fixes most if not all of the problems VC was intended to fix.

Yes sir, I believe you are exactly right. I normally don't like over saturation, but on a HUGE screen it looked great with some gooey gingerbread green stuff around it. My photography looked horrible especially HDR shots, worth it though. The colors on the SGSII and this phone are pretty different tho. But a lot to do with the same resolution on a smaller screen. The screen on the Infuse is a big (no pun) factor that held me to it rather than the SGSII

i as well got the same results, but did you have a problem with the modem. mine would work for about 3 min and then i would no longer have network connection.
i had to change the modem to get it work really smooth, but yes this set is pretty good.

Man! I'm so upset. I flashed this ROM twice, but it would not boot. Did you flash from stock? I don't know what I did wrong.

Okay heres me scenario, hope it helps understand.
1) started off with phone already rooted and such and previously had Infused V2.00 full., Downloaded a JVQ rom ( like Darky's ) , and then downloaded Linux Bozo's rom/mod ) Put both of the zips on the ROOT of the internal SD .
2) backup info and boot into Red recovery.( Shut off device, then hold Vol - and + while pressing power ), release power and continue holding both volume keys).
3) Perform the following
Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache partition, Wipe Dalvik Cache
Install zip from SD card and select the ROM you want to use
Do install from SD card again and this time select the Linux Bozo zip
4) Reboot and you will be in your rom after 10 minutes ( be patient, it takes time ). If you want better performance, install the Infuse GB Kernel. Get it here

I've successfully flashed a JVQ Rom. I'm trying to figure out how Infiniti350 was able to flash a JVP Rom.

I just followed the exact instructions the OP posted up above. With 1 mishap, when I downloaded what I thought was the ROM....I only got the lock-screen (what happens when you read things way too fast & think you know what you did) which I already downloaded and flashed
I mounted the SD card while in recovery and pushed the file containing the ROM over to the phone - flashed it - flashed LinuzBozo's stuff - rebooted & things went well all I had to do was add APN's back.
I really like my current set up BUT I'll probably find something else, before I load the ROM I want I'll run this again with a JVP base and see how things go & defiantly let you guys know. Now I'm curious why it doesn't work for other people.

I think sometimes people either have a bad flash or don't properly wipe data. Same reason lots of people randomly had problems with Infused. (I haven't tried JVP myself though.)
Well, i just finished wrapping up my favorite roms, and i keep jumping between the Sensation rom, and Darky's Rom .
BUT!
I always data wipe, clear cache, factory reset
Idk if this helps, but i saw theres a new Linuz BETA 6 , perhaps this might help problems that a few have been going through.
In closing, i really hope more ROMS designed for the Infuse come fast , i got a feeling with this new mod there will be many to come

This is a very good point. The data wipe is vital for the Infuse no matter what. I have tried it with and without the wipe & all sorts of very strange things go wrong at random. Market apps wont download - Errors when using data - Youtube errors - issues with email. Each time I did it different ones would act up too, never the same.
Full Wipe so far has fixed it without failure
*Edit - Full for me same as prasadudwadia said above - data, cache, and factory reset.
hey guys. Long story short, i had my first captivate for almost more than a year, rooted it and had all the fun with it. Then, the screen cracked, i used my insurance and got a new captivate. But, after 3 months of being super busy... I figured id rather just send the new (unrooted, uncracked) captivate back, get my refund, and go back to using my old captivate, that is already rooted has all my contacts and so on. Now....as i said its been quite a while, so i am definitely rusty. First question is that i remember that since i was rooted i was able to download apk files and install them onto my phone when it waas plugged into my pc. I definitely remember using a program and having to restart the phone and apply changes or something like that. But, i don't remember the name of the program nor how i am actually suppose to do it. Also if someone can point me in the right direction and tell me what update and what not i am supposed to be on. My captivate is just rooted with a lag fix i believe. Yet, its still really slow and laggy, even overclocked... So im hoping that the new updates will be more efficient; in being fast without taking up all my battery. in my "about phone" it reads:

are you referring to "quickboot" for easy rebooting? you may also want to look into Autokiller memory to help kill the junk. I also used ryan's OCLF.
I like you ran a rooted captivate for the longest time. it worked decently but then I tried to go to Gingerbread. MISTAKE. it was laggy bad and very unstable (Used Cezar's ROM). I didnt like it. Flashed back to the 2.2 rom (supposedly stock) and it was terrible compared to how it was. lots of lag and just overall... YUCK.
so yesterday I got the guts to flash a custom rom. I was mad at the phone so I flipped thru several flavors and ended up putting the Phoenix Ultimate (JS7) on it. HOLY S**t Balls mom!!! it was super fast, extremely responsive and worked like a dream. took me a little while to do it, (I had to flash to 2.1 (you are there), root it, cyanogenmod, then Phoenix) but it is SOOOO worth it. super fast now. my wife is asking me to do hers...ugh...
also, all the animations, graphics and just in general. it feels like I got a brand new phone. I could not be happier
thanks for the reply. Haha sounds like you have an iphone status phone now that's what im shooting for; something fast and reliable. Im going to wait and see what the majority of people like on they're captivates. So i am waiting on standby until i know exactly what and how to do it. And no, the program i believe was only on my computer. i would plug in my phone, drop in the apk file.,remove the phone, and do that recovery mode reboot thing on my phone so that the application i just dropped in installs. Sorry if what im saying doesn't make sense like I've said its been a while -.-
the program you are thinking of is the sideload wonder machine
and yes you are on a very outdated version of android, 2.1 (eclair) there has been an official update to 2.2 (froyo) and also many leaks of 2.3.x(gingerbread) but nothing officially from at&t since froyo.
noone can really tell you what you will like best, you will have to do what the rest of us do and read, read, read, then read a bit more, flash a few to try and pick what you like the best....

what is MIUI, cm7 and pinnacle? custom flashes or something? i am also running my current root with launcher pro. Most of everyone on this thread seem happy with their setup as far as smoothness,responsiveness, and battery life go, which is exactly what i want!
MIUI/CM7 are AOSP versions if 2.3.x,aka gingerbread. Pinnacle is a leaked version of Gingerbread, made for the captivate by Samsung.
so gingerbread is the way to go? or rather should i say 2.3.. how hard is it for me to upgrade to 2.3 i noticed that some apps aren't even available to me in the market on 2.1. but still i want the features that 2.3 has. Besides just updating to a version of gingerbread, what are the other common things people do for anti-lag/responsiveness, while still being conservative on the battery aspect.Thanks for all the help so far guys!!!
I wasn't pleased with the gingerbread as of yet. It will get better I'm sure of it. Try out one of the 2.2 based roms as they are the most stable at this point.

Yes. I have AT&T samsung captivate
Rogers is a rom version. You are on stock but rooted. The second link has very easy step by step instructions. The rom u get will have all u need including the kernel and modems
1. Back up ur data with titanium backup. If u don't have it, check market.
2. Flash ur phone with Odin
3. One the flash is done to stock do a master clear with Odin (your phone is on, plugged in and USB debugging)
4. Install the root per directions
5. Copy clockwork and the rom. Of ur choice to ur internal zip
6. Install the clockwork recovery (you run it twice back to back)
7. Run the new rom install with clockwork
I. Phone boots to new rom.
First time it takes about an hour. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE DIRCTIONS IN MY PREVIOUS POST.

^^Rogers isn't a ROM version. It's a Canadian cell service provider...

I stand corrected. The rom will upgrade you to what it is based on. The one I use is froyo based. There are gingerbread roms too. Mosaic seems to be a popular one as was Phoenix that I am running. Best advice.. go read those threads. Look at screenshots they have and the user feedback

Personally, I'm a huge fan of DesignGears' roms. I'd suggest you go with something like Cognition 5v2. Its 2.3.3, very stable, very fast, and, since you've only used stocks rom up 'til now, it'll be very familiar (minus all the bloatware). then i hit a problem, i posted on that thread as well still waiting for a response. idk what happened to my phone...this is my post on that thread "ok so i did this and i hit a problem. I got up to the red fish, i turned off the phone to get it into download mode again. and i did, Placed the kernelKF1.tar file in the pda slot and hit start on odin my phone reboots and right after the AT&t logo my screen goes crazy. it looks as if my screen is tripping on acid... and it just keep looping att logo then that. What should i do? i need the files on my phone atleast its not completly bricked"
