First things to do - HTC Inspire 4G

This is my first android phone and I was wondering if any of the more experienced users could give a couple things to do with the phone to make it more enjoyable.

market.android.com (install apps from your computer)
zedge (free wallpaper/ringtones... not sure how it'll integrate with sense)
tasker/setting profiles
swype keyboard
rooting

now how would you get swype? I havn't been able to use sideloading wonder machine(im on a mac) and it's not on the app store. Also, im just waiting for a fairly easy guide to follow on how to root this phone

First thing you should do would be to check the internal storage.
Mine only had 1GB right out of the box. I think we may have a warranty issue on our hands.

Swype can be had by signing up for the beta. Just google it.

Go nuts in the app store. Customize your home screens. Check out the various skins (slate is my fav) to make it more yours.
Get some great music apps like Pandora and Slacker.
DL some ringtones.
Admire the phones good looks.
Repeat.

mine has 1 gb. too. Isn't that how its supposed to come? 1 gb. internal and 8 gb on the sd card?

Mine has 1 GB aswell, I am pretty sure that most of it is being used up by the phone

Download the background app for more wallpapers, install your preferred on-screen keyboard, put your custom ringtones on the SD card, install your preferred home screen replacement if desired, disable all the things you don't need to run to save battery life, setup your notifications interval the more frequent the more you will waste battery, lower your screen brightness.
Look at the themes and apps section where I have more info on how to install these things.

[HOW-TO] Make your phone perfect! Updated [8-10-11]

This is a [HOW-TO] guide to making your Droid Charge the perfect smartphone(by that I mean music, movies, texting, calls etc). I'd say the main purpose of the thread is to just let people know of some awesome apps and settings to use if you'd like the perfect phone(well, I can't change the atrocious amount of RAM, sorry). Keep in mind this is going to be quite the read but I can guarantee there is some nice info for even the most learned Charge owners. As always, if you found this post at all helpful just hit the thanks button to show your appreciation.
1) First thing's first, you're going to want to flash Clockwork(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804) so you can flash tons of other awesome stuff later. If you ever have a question when doing anything root/ROM related you can either follow this guide(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657) OR just ask a question below.
2a) Next you're going to want to use CWM to flash your kernel so you can get rooted. You have 3 choices here; PBJ(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104634), PBJ non-voodoo(same link as PBJ just disable Voodoo through the CWM menu), and PBJ OTB edition(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126136). I personally use the OTB kernel because I like to have the option to overclock/undervolt whenever I feel it's necessary but apparently the non-OC kernel gets better battery life. I would never go with the non-voodoo kernel, the lagfix speeds up your phone and there are apps like Voodoo Control that really optimize it. There is only one real problem with Voodoo and that's that you MUST(I can't stress this enough) disable Voodoo if you are going to flash a different kernel. All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend the Voodoo kernel.
2b) Now you're going to want to flash the sd-card fix(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118111). This is ABSOLUTELY necessary and not optional, if you choose to not flash this your Charge will only read your SD card as a cd drive, to put it simply it breaks your USB mass storage and you can't transfer files anymore.
3a) After all that is done it's time to choose your ROM(if you want one). Some ROMs allow you to flash through ODIN but most are just CWM specific, .md5 files are ODIN and .zip files are CWM. Currently, I'd highly recommend Eclipse(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144015). Humble(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146103) is in a very close second but I'll have to give it to Nitro, he made a great ROM. It has an awesome TouchWiz4 look and has a bunch of flashable files to modify the ROM to your liking. Humble on the other hand has everything built in, that's the one thing that made me switch to Eclipse. For example Eclipse has an optional Honeycomb theme you can flash but Humble has it built in so you are forced to sit with Honeycomb like it or not. You can also choose certain debloated ROMs but I never really saw the point, if you want to stay on TouchWiz and debloat just download TitaniumBackup and either freeze(recommended) or just uninstall that crapware.
3b) Now this is not necessary but I would highly recommend you flash an AOSP lockscreen over the puzzle one, it's more accurate(you won't ever miss your swipe like you can with the puzzle) and you can see your battery percentage on the lockscreen when charging, great when you're calibrating your battery or just want to know what your battery is at. Eclipse has a flashable .zip and Humble comes with the AOSP lockscreen preinstalled. I would also highly recommend the HTC Sense lockscreen(keep reading, it's posted below under the subtitle "Lockscreen" in step 4).
3c) If you didn't choose Eclipse or Humble(or you're on an older version) I would highly recommend the modified camera.zip(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144885) that causes your power button to act as a shutter when using the stock Camera app. It really makes you forget about the fact that you don't have a dedicated camera button because, well, now you do have one!
4) Now it's time for the fun part, no more flashing we're going to start with the worlds best apps to truly make this phone awesome! Keep in mind this is not necessarily in order of importance they're just the first apps that popped into my head.
Keyboard: SwiftKey X($4), Modded HTC Sense Keyboard Port(free, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416) - SwiftKey X is a great keyboard with very accurate predictions, it can be annoying at times but I've found this keyboard to be incredible. The modded HTC Sense KB Port is very nice, it's pretty much an exact clone and is very easy to install, not to mention free. Give the legendary keyboard a shot! Added picture(s) of SwiftKey X.
Messaging: Handcent SMS(free), GO SMS Pro(free, thanks caesus!) - Handcent SMS is a customizable messaging app to replace the crappy stock messaging. I would say it's best feature over the stock app is the themes, they look awesome! GO SMS Pro is much better than Handcent if you ask me. GO has very cool transitions between pages(check pictures), the themes are much better(and there's a LOT more of them, which brings me to my next point), much better dev support and it just has a cleaner look then Handcent. Aside from all that the features are pretty much exactly the same. Added picture(s) of Handcent SMS and GO SMS Pro.
Handcent:
GO SMS:
Phone: Stock Phone(free, preinstalled) + Caller ID Plus($4), RocketDial($4) - I used RocketDial mainly for the callerID but I found the app itself to be quite buggy at times, for example about 2 weeks ago I received a call and when I went to answer it the phone froze up for about a minute and caused me to miss the call. This might have been due to the fact that I froze the Phone app in Titanium but I don't know. Now I just use the stock Phone app with Caller ID Plus and it's working great. Added picture(s) of Stock Phone with the Caller ID Plus app(blacked out the name, address, zip code and phone number in that order.)
Browser: Dolphin HD(free) - Pretty neat browser, I like the tabs and the gesture feature and currently have no problems with it. You might also want to check out Opera, although I haven't personally used it. Added picture(s) for Dolphin HD.
Music: PowerAMP($5, there's also the option to try it out with a 15 day free trial), Mixzing Basic(free), Stock Music Player(free, preinstalled) - Now keep in mind I'm REALLY into my music, I need a very high quality music player with tons of options and a nice UI. That's what PowerAMP is, if you aren't a huge music person or you don't listen to music primarily on your phone I would recommend a free app, either the stock Music Player or Mixzing Basic. Added picture(s) of PowerAMP.
Weather: Eclipse's built in GS2 widgets(free), MIUI Digital Clock(free) OR Beautiful Widgets($3) - As far as weather goes they all function the same, the weather is always accurate so I'll just put it plain and simple; the Eclipse widgets look incredible, they are animated very well but that's about it. MIUI Digital Clock is fantastic, VERY customizable and a great bang for your buck(yes, I know it's free). Then we have Beautiful Widgets, it's very handy to have all the widgets it comes with but honestly, who the hell needs a clock? All that info is displayed on your lockscreen/notification bar. Half the widgets are pointless, it's a waste of money unless you really like the look of its weather widget. Hands down the winner of this fight is MIUI Digital Clock for its incredible amount of customization. Added picture(s).
Eclipse Widget 1:
Eclipse Widget 2:
MIUI Digital Clock:
Beautiful Widgets:
News: Stock News & Weather widget(free), US Newspapers(free, thanks piizzadude!) - The stock News & Weather widget is quite simple, just a constant feed of news with the occasional picture. US Newspapers lists a bunch of different newspapers & sports sites, it also allows you to add your favorite sites to the app. Added picture(s) of Stock News & Weather and US Newspapers.
Stock News & Weather:
US Newspapers:
Video Player: Stock Video Player(free),MoboPlayer(free, thanks kvswim!) - Stock works fine, it's simple and just shows a list of your videos. MoboPlayer on the other hand has a lot more compatibility, it has a few problems like not detecting all my videos but it's a great video player.
Emulators: Ataroid,Gameboid,GBCoid,Gearoid,Gensoid,N64oid,Nesoid,SNesoid,FPse(not available on the market, must be obtained from Slideme or other such websites. Free for a limited time.) - Not sure about you but I NEED to have emulators with me at all times, whenever I'm bored I whip out the GB emulator and play some Pokemon Red or get the GBA emulator and play some Mystery Dungeon, great for nostalgia or just straight up fun. Added picture(s) of the GBA emulator(Gameboid). Sorry that they're sideways, don't hurt your neck!
Games: Fieldrunners HD($3), Age of Zombies($3),Cut the Rope($1),Plants vs Zombies($4),Impossible Game($1),Doodle Jump($1) - I have about 40 or so actual games on my phone. Instead of listing them all and looking up all their prices I'm taking the lazy route and just giving you my absolute favorite and most addicting games. Unfortunately they all cost money but hey you get what you pay for.
Lockscreen: Agile Lock(has a free & paid version; paid is $1) - I would HIGHLY recommend this lockscreen for anyone who doesn't like the AOSP/Puzzle/Glass or just wants to use the HTC sense lockscreen(you know, the ring that has shortcuts and such). If you do choose this route you would need to follow the Androidcentral guide(http://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-charge-rooting-roms-hacks/88577-remove-lock-screen-charge.html) to remove your current lockscreen because all this app does is add a second lock to your phone, so you would need to unlock your phone twice if you want to get in. Before you do that BE WARNED this removes not only your lockscreen but your power button menu as well(you know, when you hold the power button to restart and boot into recovery). Instead it just powers your phone off, you can always re-enable your lockscreen very easily using the same guide so there's nothing to fear. This app has TONS of customization and is far superior to the zero customization the AOSP/stock locks have. I'd say the only issue this app has is the fact that you can't go to silent/sound like you can with the AOSP. Added picture(s).
Screenshot/Screen Capture: ShootMe(free, thanks blarrick & anoninja118!) - I prefer this over the stock screen capture service(Hold back key, then press home) it's slow at times, doesn't always take the picture and holding the back key causes me to actually go back in many apps(Dolpin HD and Handcent for example). I still do use the stock service but if back is causing problems I use ShootMe. Added picture(s).
Image Viewer/Gallery: QuickPic(free, thanks Jmjohnson1717!) - MUCH better image viewer over the stock app, the stock app is just too cluttered and not organized well. I like the options this one has and I can't thank you enough Jmjohnson1717, seriously... that stock app is horrible. Added picture(s).
Tethering: Barnacle Wifi Tether(free), A WiFi Tether AP Mesh Client(AKA OpenGarden, free), Wireless Tether for Root Users(free, not available on the Android Market. Download from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ ), PdaNet(free), EasyTether($10) - Barnacle, OpenGarden and WT4RUsers are all very simple wireless tethering apps. They are free and just require you to click one button and it will show up as a wireless network named AndroidTether or something similar. PdaNet and EasyTether are both wired tethering apps(in-case you don't have the option to connect to a wireless network). If you are going to choose a wired tethering app go with PdaNet because it's free. Added picture(s) of OpenGarden(all the wireless tethering apps look the same).
Scripts/Mods/.zips: V6 SuperCharger(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276), Loopy Smoothness Tweak(apply SuperCharger before this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205744), modded camera.apk(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144885), if you're on Eclipse you should flash all the included .zip files you feel are necessary(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144015) - V6 SuperCharger basically gets rid of your hanging home screen(When your home screen shows up blank after clearing RAM or closing an app that consumes high RAM). Loopy Smoothness Tweak basically just eliminates lag and choppiness on plenty of applications. Modded camera.apk just causes your power button to act as a shutter when you have the stock Camera app open, doesn't work for other apps like Fast Burst, just stock unfortunately. Eclipse flashable .zips are basically just apps/mods that Nitro thought some people would want and some people wouldn't, so he gave you the option to either flash or not flash. I chose to flash everything except VVM, stock gps config and puzzle unlock.
Other: Voodoo Control(free & paid version, thanks kvswim!), CPU Spy(free, thanks anoninja118!), FasterFix(free) - Voodoo Control allows you to control Voodoo lagfix/Voodoo Sound to customize your sound settings(among other things). "This(CPU Spy) is a simple app to display the time the CPU spends in each frequency state. This can be a useful tool in diagnosing battery problems or tweaking your over-clock settings." Quoted from the CPU Spy app on the Android Market because I'm too damn lazy to type anything else out :] Fasterfix is a VERY simple but incredibly useful app, it basically makes your GPS lock on much faster, when I'm inside my house GPS locks on in about 2 seconds, just open the app and choose the server closest to you. Added picture(s) of Voodoo Control Plus(paid version) and FasterFix.
Voodoo Control Plus:
FasterFix:
That's pretty much everything I needed to do before this phone was perfect, might not have been the most useful guide but I just wanted to share everything I needed to do with my Charge. Now I'm not saying to do this exactly since everyone has different tastes but just use this as a reference. There are some cool apps you may not have known about and there is some info you may not have known about. Don't click that thanks button unless you actually feel this thread deserves it, peace :]
You forgot Voodoo Control. I line out to my car. I listen to techno, and I like my bass cranked and the volume amped. This is absolutely necessary for anyone who likes their music to go loud and hard. Especially high school teenagers like me Also you can control voodoo lagfix from the app.
Also, I recommend MoboPlayer as a video player, it has a lot more file support than the stock player.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyFroyo 1.9.1
I'll have to check that out, I use Freemake Video Converter(possibly the BEST converter of all time) and just convert it to Android format so stock works fine for me, and btw PowerAMP(the music player) allows you to modify your bass and, well, pretty much everything. I like a lot of bass too and PowerAMP does just that
Voodoo Control modifies the audio hardware directly.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyFroyo 1.9.1
Yea I have Voodoo Control Plus :] I'll be sure to add it to the list, I just prefer poweramp, it gives you a nice UI like you're in a recording studio. It also allows you to save your presets and assign them to certain songs and all this crap. I love both apps
edit: Do you know why Mobo isn't recognizing all my videos? I direct it to the folder and after it hits a certain video it will just stock scanning and only show a few videos. Not sure what the problem is but that's the only thing annoying me about this app, everything else seems great.
If you do a lot of "newspaper" reading I would suggest that you give US Newspapers a try. it is a free app and it lists something like 30 newspapers and sports sites. You can also add your favorite sites as well.
Is their an app to turn my charge into a sgs2? Now that would be a perfect phone!
How bout how to do this on a mac? I know you can use heimdall but as far as step by step I'm lost.

Wondering about 2b.. the SD card fix. I've yet to have to flash this to have my mass storage work properly. I'm running the latest PBJ Voodoo kernel, and am on the debloated rom with a few minor tweaks of my own. I just double checked and I can read from and write to my SD card when connected to my PC just fine. Is it only necessary when running certain roms?
Edit: I suppose it is possible that I flashed the fix way back when I rooted my DC, but I really don't remember doing that. I do have the fix on my SD card though, so I guess it is a possibility that I did flash it and don't remember doing it.

See the thing is it doesn't always happen, if you didn't flash it I would still recommend it. If it breaks later you will have to go out and buy a usb reader for your sd card to fix it
Beamed from my Droid Charge using the XDA premium app
This is a great idea for the newer Android users. The only thing I would add is that a custom launcher is very important (ADW/Go Launcher Ex/LauncherPro Plus)>
Also, I think GoSMS has surpassed Handcent in the SMS category.
Mass storage break
This is crazy! I never even heard about this SD card break before you mentioned it. Are the dev's working on implementing this into their roms?

Haven't heard any talk about it. Not really sure what causes it but the guide I followed to rooting this phone told me to flash the SD card fix. I see plenty of threads on this forum about how their phone is only reading as a disk drive and it's always because they didn't flash it.
edit: Just a side note, if anyone could suggest a better picture viewer/gallery over the stock one I would add it to the main post & give you credit, currently I can't stand the crappy stock Gallery :] Thanks.
I've begun adding pictures to the thread. I'm still in the process of getting pictures for all the apps, just sit back
Also, if you have any apps you think should be added to the main thread just drop a reply with the name and the reason why, I'll be sure to give you credit :]
QuickPick is a great app for the gallery.

you missed the all important screenshot app!! lol I personally use "Shoot Me!" but there is Drocap2 and a few others (all free) ... Dropbox is a good app to transfer/download files as well, and CPU Spy (free) is a must have to monitor phone cpu usage, and Terminal Emulator

sweet lol and CPU Spy and Terminal Emulator should be added as well, both free... perhaps LTE Switch too, its not a toggle but takes you directly to the option to switch between 4G LTE and 3G/1X only CDMA (for those too lazy to navigate through menus like myself lol)

Added CPU Spy because it seems like a pretty useful app, didn't add Terminal because I honestly can't see a real use for it. I think you can type su in it to check if you have root but aside from that I don't see the point
I won't add LTE Switch because there were a lot of complaints that the app can break your LTE and force a factory reset to fix it, I never bothered downloading it after seeing all the complaints. Sorry!

Glitchy apps and live wallpapers?

I don't know If I'm in the wrong place. But I would love an answer to some of my questions. If anyone could assist me I would be very appreciative.
I have restored my Nook Color to an earlier version 1.0.1, it came with firmware 1.2, I then used the latest Auto Nooter for firmware 1.0.1;
After doing so, I installed some basic apps, dolphin HD, file manager, live wallpapers, ect.
Some of these apps appear to be very glitchy. Force closing, and LauncherPro will not orientate screen position correctly when a Live Wallpaper is installed.
I am now wondering If I have gone about this root in the best way, and used the best mod.
What is the best root for the Nook Color at this point in time? there are so many confusing instruction guides, and several are different, so I do not know which one to do as they seem to change daily. I continue to get sent to different guides that make no sense to me.
I am sending this device to a friend for Christmas, they live in another state, she is not nearly as tech savy as me, haha, and she cannot mess with any of this once it gets to her. So I want to get all this done with before I send it. I want to use a very user friendly mod, and so far the one I have done seems to be really easy, but a bit glitchy.
I have a couple of questions if someone could clarify I'd be super grateful.
1.) What's the difference between the Auto-Nooter method? and the CM7 mod's?
2.) Can I install custom kernals or rom's from my AutoNooted, Nook?
3.) How come I do not have, and cannot access Rom Manager? ( I search it in the app market and only find the Premium version. It is not installed on my Nook already)
4.) Is there any way to find out why the Live Wallpaper is messing up? - Answered: LauncherPro seems to be the culprit.
5.) How can I access my launcher settings? I have downloaded 2, LauncherPro and ADW, yet I cannot seem to access settings for either of them.

[REF]Must Have apps....

At first big thnx to Superace69 for this...
And me too..For posting this....
This is a list of recommended apps to make your Android experience an awesome one.
The apps that work under the hood like the rom and ram script are for Galaxy FIT. Afterwards, everything else works for every phone.
I'll be adding apps over time so keep on coming back and checking!
I feel like the FIT has a lot of apps and themes to choose from. Here is a list of the apps I believe are epicly awesome.
What's a phone without space and some right app management? For that, I recommend s2e. It moves all the Dalvik Cache to the SD card. When I first installed it, it freed up 92MB of internal memory that I didn't knew what getting used up.
S2E: https://play.google.com/details?i...aWt1bi5zMmUiXQ..
A pretty good ram manager for any phone would be Ram Manager. It keeps your phone running smoothly and worry free.
Ram Manager:https://market.android.com/details?i...dGlvbkZyZWUiXQ..
For backups and more app management, I highly recommend Titanium Backup. One of the best apps out there hands down. You can batch move all your apps to SD, back up all your apps and system data or just apps if you like. Its so epic, it even backs up all the data on a game. Since I like to switch things a lot on my phone, I use a lot of back ups and Titanium always has me covered.
Titanium Backup https://market.android.com/details?i...dW1CYWNrdXAiXQ..
Now for themes; I highly recommend the ICS theme from AChep. This theme completely spices up your phone to the newest and fancy ICS. It changes up everything. Its the BEST ICS theme you'll find out there.
ICS Theme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1313722
For some really awesome ICS live wallpapers, here are some epic ones;
ICS Phase Beam Live Wallpaper: https://market.android.com/details?i...NzaWMubGl0ZSJd
And Ice Cream Sandwich Live WP: https://market.android.com/details?i...BhcGVyLnBybyJd
The second one is a paid app but its really worth the money.
Anyway if you want more kickass themes, check out this post! They rock
More Themes!:http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/1...hooser-themes/
Afterwards, I present to you the awesome Roboto Font. They new font looks really cool and a different font gives a whole new feel to your phone. To install it, you must first install Font Changer, extract the font and put it in the Font Changer folder in the SD.
Roboto Font: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1309621
Font Changer: https://market.android.com/details?i...FuZ2VybGl0ZSJd
Next up is an awesome add-on. It gives your status bar a whole new makeover with the ICS style. This add-on also hooks up your phone with the ICS transitions. In my case they're really fast and work wonderfully. Another epic piece of work from CM7.2's dev.
[ANIMATION][STATUS BAR] ICS for CM7.2 by J.A.F. :http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1360899
To mess with your system files or just check out whats inside your SD, I recommend Root explorer or ES file explorer. Whichever one fits your taste.
Here's another ICS look changer! Themes your lock screen to the ICS style! Just flash it and everything will be fine.
ICS Lockscreen:http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...70&postcount=1
Root Explorer: https://market.android.com/details?i...RleHBsb3JlciJd
ES File explorer: https://market.android.com/details?i...HJvaWQucG9wIl0.
Now if you want to get rid of all of those ads (Or mostly) I present to you AdFree. This app blocks out most ads from getting to your device.
AdFree: https://market.android.com/details?i...ZC5hZGZyZWUiXQ..
Now, what's an FIT with a whole bunch of customization but still with the same old bootanimation? Here's where this thread comes in handy; its one of the largest repositories of bootanimations. Pick one that suits your taste and enjoy!
Bootanimations: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20634060/Android-Hilfe/bootanimation_bios/download.html
If you like cloud storage; DropBox is what I recommend. The simple UI makes everything really easy to use. If you don't feel like going through the hassle of connecting your phone via USB just to pass a simple file, you can always DropBox it through your PC and download it to your phone. (Lazy, I know )
DropBox: https://market.android.com/details?i...LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..
Here's the best notepad ever. The only issue I have with it is that you can't set it as a sticky note widget. But besides that, it does EVERYTHING you can possibly think of.
Evernote:https://market.android.com/details?i...5ldmVybm90ZSJd
The stock gallery app is kind of slow and sluggish sometimes so here's a little something to speed up your picture viewing experience.
Quick Pic: https://market.android.com/details?i...GljRm9sZGVyIl0.
Need some help in math class? Here's a scientific calculator to make things a little easier!
RealCalc: https://market.android.com/details?i...5SZWFsQ2FsYyJd
Now for web browsing... There's a whole bunch of browsers out there and I can honestly say I've tried them all except one I didn't download because I had the mini version already. Turns out that one that I didn't try was actually the best one. I'm talking about Opera. Opera is smooth, slick and speedy as hell. Its got decent features to use. If you want a max customizable browser, go for Dolphin HD.
Opera Browser: https://market.android.com/details?i...LmJyb3dzZXIiXQ..
Dolphin HD: https://market.android.com/details?i...nlCcm93c2VyIl0.
A new browser has been discovered. Its fast and the UI looks really good. Its called Nineski Browser.
Ninoski Browser:https://market.android.com/details?i...LmJyb3dzZXIiXQ..
For music, I really like Power AMP. The UI is very cool and it has a couple of themes you can use to switch it up a bit. The equalizer is pretty good too and it has some customization that could change up the way you listen to music on your phone. It offers a 15 day trial and then you have to buy the app. Its another one thats really worth the money.

If you like to keep an eye on what your usage is, whether its data, calls or sms; Traffic counter is the one for you. It counts every single MB of data that enters or exits your phone and is pretty accurate.

I never thought I'd put this app in here because of all the flaws but they finally fixed it. Facebook 1.8.0. The update is completely in sync with the web version and everything just simply works wonderfully.

I personally like having a loud phone. But since our FIT's speaker is a little too low, I fix that up with Volume+. Works wonders. There's a free and paid version. The paid lets you set your volume higher. Here's the link:
Volume+:https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...cm9pZC5sdmgiXQ..
This next one is a file manager. But I mostly use it to make back up apks of apps. Its Astro. If my friend wants an app I have, I just back it up and bluetooth it to him. Simple =D
Astro:https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result
This next one is one I found out about recently since I didn't like the dialer of a rom I was using. Afterwards, it became my replacement dialer for every rom I use xD. Here's exDialer. Has some pretty cool themes too.
exDialer:https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result
Since I'm a musician, a tuner is really important. This one always has my back. I'm talking about gStrings

For some really awesome ICS live wallpapers, here are some epic ones;
ICS Phase Beam Live Wallpaper: https://market.android.com/details?i...NzaWMubGl0ZSJd
And Ice Cream Sandwich Live WP: https://market.android.com/details?i...BhcGVyLnBybyJd
The second one is a paid app but its really worth the money.
Anyway if you want more kickass themes, check out this post! They rock
More Themes!:http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/1...hooser-themes/
Afterwards, I present to you the awesome Roboto Font. They new font looks really cool and a different font gives a whole new feel to your phone. To install it, you must first install Font Changer, extract the font and put it in the Font Changer folder in the SD.
Roboto Font: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1309621
Font Changer: https://market.android.com/details?i...FuZ2VybGl0ZSJd
Next up is an awesome add-on. It gives your status bar a whole new makeover with the ICS style. This add-on also hooks up your phone with the ICS transitions. In my case they're really fast and work wonderfully. Another epic piece of work from CM7.2's dev.
[ANIMATION][STATUS BAR] ICS for CM7.2 by J.A.F. :http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1360899
To mess with your system files or just check out whats inside your SD, I recommend Root explorer or ES file explorer. Whichever one fits your taste.
Here's another ICS look changer! Themes your lock screen to the ICS style! Just flash it and everything will be fine.
ICS Lockscreen:http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...70&postcount=1
Root Explorer: https://market.android.com/details?i...RleHBsb3JlciJd
ES File explorer: https://market.android.com/details?i...HJvaWQucG9wIl0.
Now if you want to get rid of all of those ads (Or mostly) I present to you AdFree. This app blocks out most ads from getting to your device.
AdFree: https://market.android.com/details?i...ZC5hZGZyZWUiXQ..
Now, what's an FIT with a whole bunch of customization but still with the same old bootanimation? Here's where this thread comes in handy; its one of the largest repositories of bootanimations. Pick one that suits your taste and enjoy!
Bootanimations: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1348731

Need some help in math class? Here's a scientific calculator to make things a little easier!

REMOVE BLN! it wont work with our model because we dont have an LED in soft buttons like ACE.
Good list, but needs screenshots for users like me who are too lazy to manually check on each link to view the app. imo.
I double agree on Titanium, Quick Pic, all the ICS links, and Drop box.
Although, I prefer Dolphin HD over Opera.

My not so good review

Went from a G2 to this One S yesterday. I'm not too impressed.
No dedicated menu button
There is enough room for one on the bottom but they only put 3.
What happens now is that Android (or Sense or something) detects when there are menu options and puts a button on the screen for it taking away real estate from the application.
No trackball
I used this a lot on my G2 especially on web pages with small links that I didn't want to missclick. I already miss it. I also used the trackball wake feature in CM on my G2. Now there is only one way to turn the screen on and its a little hard to do one handed. The trackball was in a very natural position to turn on with your thumb. Now without it, it is very awkward to power on with your thumb, you have to hold it very high and I'm affraid of dropping it. Alternatively I could turn it on with my index finger but it spreads my hand way out and still feels weird.
No folders
I'm not sure if this is an ICS thing or a Sense thing (because this phone is an unholy bastardization), but I can't figure out a way to create folders on my home screens. I'm not talking about the Sense folders for applications either. In normal Android builds you can add shortcuts, widgets, folders. The Pandora application shipped with a folder called "My Stations" or something like that. I used this because it only took up 1x1 on a homescreen and let me choose which station was opened. Without it, you need to open the application and it immediately starts playing the last radio station. This is annoying.
Resolution
The DPI isn't any better than my G2, its just a bigger screen. This is pretty disappointing. I would like a crisper display in a flagship device.
Bloat
Its pretty bad. I know most users want Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, etc... but how about you let us select what we want during the phone setup.
Misc
This is my first Sense device and my first ICS device so again, not sure where this crap is coming from.... When you install an application it creates a shortcut for it on one of your home screens. Putting a shortcut is the simplist thing you can do in Android, why not leave it for the use to do if they want to do it.
On my way to work I was listening to I Heart Radio and while the live streams were okay when I went to the "pandora"-like functionality it would only play one song and then stop. This never happened on my G2. Don't know whats going on here.
I don't care for the browser (which they stupidly call "internet").
I don't care for all of the account options. I went to share a page in the browser, I wanted to email it to myself. So when I went to share page it let me select how to share it. I got "Facebook for HTC Sense", "Mail", "Twitter for HTC Sense", and "Dropbox". I did set up Facebook, but I did not set up mail, twitter, or dropbox. What I wanted was GMail which I had to select "See all..." Then I saw a plethora of garbage bloat that they bundle with the phone and had to scroll down to get to GMail. After I went though this experience I went to share another page to see if GMail showed up at the top... it didn't.
I'm sure I'll have more complaints the more I use it. I used my fiance's upgrade for this one but I get an upgrade in 3 months. If CM9 isn't out by then she'll be using this phone and I'll upgrade to a SGSIII or that yet to be named quad-core LG phone.
Summary
CM9 can't come fast enough.
EDIT
I'll add some good things here.
Good things
Again, this is coming from a G2 so in 2 years things should be better anyways....
It is very thin, and very light.
It has a front facing camera which my G2 did not.
The flashlight, though not as bright as the "High Brightness" Cyanogenmod setting on the G2, is still pretty bright.
The speaker seems to put out a lot of sound. Can't attest to the quality yet but the volume is there.
EDIT #2
Some more good and bad....
Skype Useless
... probably related to Wifi crackling. One of the things I was looking forward to with this phone was the ability to make video calls via Skype. My fiance has an iPad2, my in-laws each have a G2X, and my brother has a SGSII. Skype is useless on this device. There is echoing / cracking and video lag even when on Wifi. I called my brother with this One S and it was useless. I then called him on an iPad2 and it was great. I'm wondering if the problem has to do with Beats Audio. We'll have to wait for an AOSP ROM without Beats to find out.
So I unlocked/rooted/ROM'd ...
I am now running Black Dragon 4.0. I LOVE the menu hack to get rid of the stupid 3 dot menu on all the screens. I like that they kept the ability to longpress home to get the default behavior as well. The launcher seems nice though I haven't played with it too much (which is a good thing, means they have good defaults).
Can't wait for the kernel sources to be released so we can make some more CM9 progress. I really miss the buttons in the dropdown for wifi, brightness, bluetooth, etc. Now I have to dropdown, click settings, scroll down and find brighness.
How's the battery life? My G2 has some HORRENDOUS battery... like it can drain 20% an hour... I go to school for like 6/7 hours and I can leave with like a <20% battery life. Currently using MIUI because that seems to be the best battery life.
Edit: As for a menu button, Google is trying to get rid of that. I read a post about it a couple of months ago. They say it was useless. I completely disagree because I use it quite a lot. I use it way more than the search button which I have literally probably used less than 30 times and I've been on an Android device since the G1 came out.
For everything you just said mostly there are workarounds.
The deidcated menu button now exists through roms...the three button thing on screen is removed. Change of dpi works fine on no sense roms I'm set on 195 on sense not as good. Play market you can stop adding apps onto screens
Bloat just remove yourself root explorer..
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA Premium App
Battery lifes good also...
As I said workarounds exist
Also get a different launcher and ditch sense or just get Nova or apex

I'm the wrong person to ask about battery life (at least during the week). I work in one of these new fancy energy efficient "Green" buildings. We have coating on our windows that block UV with the side effect of also blocking cellular signals. Everyone that works here puts their phones on airplane mode to save battery because we have 0 signal and the phone search all day.
I'll know better this weekend about battery life.

How did they implement the dedicated menu button?
How do I ditch Sense?... what is Nova / apex?
Do I need root to install another launcher?

no you can install launchers without root..from market just look for them
to ditch sense though you will need root..and to change dpi you will need root..my advice root lol
by ditching sense i mean install a non sense rom like black dragon or untouchables that strip sense away so the majority is ice cream sandwich without the bloatfest. some apps will be kept in but just use root explorer to rid the rom of it.
the dedicated menu button and ridding the screen of the three dots at the bottom is also because its been taken away and remapped by devs..so again..you need root
most of all..development will kick in soon..so better to root..or if not just use a different launcher but you dont really accomplish what your setting out to do
leedroid should be here soon with a rom,and will do away with most of the bloat anyway...so youll keep sense and most things you complained about will be sorted..
the main thing here is..root..worth it..yes..without..pointless and youll be stuck with htcs crap stock rom..pretty poor for me..but coming from another phone with loads of development..probably biased of how it should be
No Folders?
Just long-tap on the icon and drag it to another icon. THe folder will creat automaticly.

No dedicated menu button
Root and ROM it. People are remapping the multitask key as the menu button, and hold-home now does the multitask. You're on XDA, so I assume you're enthused enough to root and ROM it.
No trackball
Seriously. Please find me an Android device with a trackball nowadays. It's gone...you're just gonna have to deal with it.
Resolution
This display seems pretty crisp. We're working with phones with relatively small displays. There's only so many pixels you can pack into until it doesn't even matter. 720p is about as far as we need to go on phone screens. The qHD screen on this phone has vivid colors and all the qualities of Super AMOLED. The resolution seems plenty high to me. Are you starting 1inch away from the phone and observing pixels?
Bloat
Welcome to flagship carrier devices. Again, you're on XDA, and fully capable of rooting it and removing all that crap. The G2 was a 1-off device that had pretty much stock Android. Consider it a Nexus device, more or less. With a flagship phone, you're going to get bloatware.
Misc
This is my first Sense device and my first ICS device so again, not sure where this crap is coming from.... When you install an application it creates a shortcut for it on one of your home screens. Putting a shortcut is the simplist thing you can do in Android, why not leave it for the use to do if they want to do it.
Sense has nothing to do with this. The new Google Play Store now by default places new apps' icons on the homescreen. It's as easy as going to the prefs in Play Store and disabling. Blame Google if you're going to blame someone.
On my way to work I was listening to I Heart Radio and while the live streams were okay when I went to the "pandora"-like functionality it would only play one song and then stop. This never happened on my G2. Don't know whats going on here.
Don't know what to tell you, but it's obvious that you're describing some sort of software issue, not a hardware issue. If it worked fine on the live streams, then your data connection worked. Talk to iHeartRadio.
I don't care for the browser (which they stupidly call "internet").
So install a new one! ICS Browser+ is exactly like the stock browser. There's also Chrome and Opera. Cmon...
After I went though this experience I went to share another page to see if GMail showed up at the top... it didn't.
This is the one thing I disliked and will agree with you on, although once again, rooting and ROMing can take care of it. That or removing bloatware.
I'm sure I'll have more complaints the more I use it. I used my fiance's upgrade for this one but I get an upgrade in 3 months. If CM9 isn't out by then she'll be using this phone and I'll upgrade to a SGSIII or that yet to be named quad-core LG phone.
Suit yourself. 4.7 inches is just too big, and at these speeds, you're at the mercy of your data connection, not the processor.
Summary
CM9 can't come fast enough.

I think nearly all of your points are moot. A lot of your review seems to be based on your lack of willingness to change some preferences and MANAGE your device. If you were on a G2, then you never had to manage stuff like this. Consider it a new experience. If you wanted stock Android, you should've gotten a Galaxy Nexus. I just upgraded from a Nexus S and while I screamed at first at all the Sense crap, I quickly had it rooted, debloated, de-Sensed, and up and running with a nice, fast ROM (Black Magic 4.0).
Give it time. The phone JUST came out.

i agree with you there, its all about learning curves..no sense roms are fairly close to stock..its just the settings that are different now..he_stheone has already added certain elements of stock android..so its fairly close..just the settings..that are the main difference now.

Those aren't the folders I'm talking about. I think what I'm talking about are called live folders. In AOSP builds of Android when you long press on an empty space on one of your screens you can choose widgets, folders, shortcuts, contacts, and other things I can't remember.
With Sense you only get widgets and shortcuts.... no folders, no contacts, etc... just widgets and shortcuts.
Isn't that minor thing?

Going to have to side with you on this one. This phone is definitly a great device, give it some time, dig in a little bit. Much better than my Tmo-SGS2.
most of things you mentioned isnt a "bad thing" just you dont know how to operate the phone, or its just different (opinion at that point).
Also you didnt like things which are for all devices, not just one S

The long press, dragging and combining of icons together is AOSP folders in Ice Cream Sandwich. The long press on the desktop to add folder is long gone and is not coming back.

Sorry... you said Black Magic, not Black dragon.
I'll give it a try in a couple weeks. I like to use my phone a bit before rooting to make sure I didn't get a lemon.
Does the camera work on this one?
Just got the phone and here are my negatives:
1. With lowest brightness setting the screen is horrible (but if you increase it a bit, its ok)
2. No switches in pulldown menu ? I though Sense always had that.....
3. Bottom plastic is not 100% flush at one corner (maybe will exchange, maybe not)
4. In navigation I just couldnt find "setting" button anywhere.....whats up with that ?
gonna go to Verizon and compare to Nexus....I still need Tmo SIM and stores are in same place anyway....I am not a phone freak not wasting time here
Its also very true that until you have 2 devices in hand you cant really compare screen quality...I though my G2x IPS panel for super great, but compared to One S its very warm colored and whites have red tint. Its also hard to use in lowest brightness even in dark room....but with G2x case its because screen is simply too dark, with One S its bright but disgusting to look at due to some "noise"

What's the first thing you do after getting your device?

As the title says, what are the first things you do after getting your Note 10.1?
Do you root right away? What apps do you install? Do you run benchmarks? Do you apply a screen protector before using it?
After all the initial set up I do root as soon as possible. I don't bother with benchmarks. There are plenty of results already and since our tablets are similar I really don't care about the number on my particular sample. Now if I notice lag or a slow down I will run benches and test to try and find the cause.
Waiting for the dust to settle before rooting - need to make sure all is working properly. Meanwhile, I'm installing fav apps, listening to Pandora, testing everything. So far, so good.
Install CWM and root so that I can install SixAxis app to enable Sony PS3 bluetooth controller to compare games such as Dead Trigger, Modern Combat 3, etc. against my Nexus 7. With the Ultra High graphics hack for Dead Trigger GN 10.1 is even smoother and faster overall than N7.
See how well the pr0n looks on said device... incognito of course

:good:
I smell it.
Do you guys mind sharing your must have apps list?
I personally always tinker with the settings to my liking.
Then I install
data meter,
restore my nova launcher,
install some productivity office apps, notes + ms office replacement
games
music apps (g music + pandora)
and I'm good to go until I find myself needing other things.

Root
Then gesture control so I can hide the notification bar to use my full screen
Button savior gives you all the controls of the notification bar on the right side of the screen near where I'd rest my right hand. It makes navigating so much easier.
Ad block to get rid of ads on websites
Thumb keyboard.
Nova launcher
The first thing I did was remove all the widgets and changed the background. Next I added some apps and widgetsI like to use. Like circlelauncher lite, wifi file explorer pro, cool reader, es task manager with es file explorer, fora dictionarys, unit converter, opera mobile (that used to br my favorite browser but the built-in one seems to work so well that opera has become my backup), hp eprint home&bus, some others that I decided I did not need and some games.
Next I started trying out the built-in apps and features which is what I am still doing. I am finding that many of the built-in apps work so well that I don't need many of the apps I have used in the past.
Some good built-in apps, for sure.
First, I open the box. Then I remove the big plastic sheets. Then I slowly remove all the sticky plastic sheets all over the tablet..
(Why did that sound way more pron than it sounded in my head.... )
Because the porn is all in your head.
