I agree, does sound quite interesting. I'll make sure to check back on this, and see if I can find anything on the web about it.

that is good but i think about some litle piece of harware in the wall working with switch

I'm sure there are other solutions but you might want to check out the Hawking Home Automation Gateway. It's a web server that sits on your LAN and controls Z-wave devices like light switches, sensors, etc.

View camera of another ppc via bluetooth?

Is it possible to view the camera of another ppc via bluetooth? whether i need to install a program on both ppc's thats fine.
i just want sumthing where i can connect my two ppc's, put PPC1 sumwhere.......and watch PPC1 on PPC2 via bluetooth.
thanks a lot
,Andrew
Well your post has been up longer than most and still no reply.
Allow me to take your forum cherry. The reluctance of replys is probably down to the nature of why you would want to watch ppc1 on ppc2 via bluetooth (taking into account that you have a 10m range)
So could you please answer me this survey, and i will be happy to answer your questions.
1) Are you planning to "watch" others, when they most likely are unaware that you are hiding (less than ten metres away)?
2) Have you got an atractive collegue, who rarely checks under the desk?
3) Are you planning to watch the public enter pin numbers into cashpoints, so that you can jump them later?
You get the picture.... I am sure you have a very good reason to want to see something 10m away, or maybe in the next room.... but, validation of the purpose would get you more response.
Please don't take this the wrong way, for all i know you could be my neighbor
oh lol haha.....soz, yeh i see where ur coming from
umm.....not anything particular (like getting passwords or perving at people LOL).....just like viewing something from another perspective.....say....im up at the front of the classroom.....i might be able to see wots happening behind me without even looking (by setting up ppc1 in front of me sumwhere).
i dont have any malicious reason .....just more of a different way of looking at things sorta point of view if u get wot i mean? just to see wot i look like to other people and such.
thanks if u can help me
,Andrew
hmmmmm?
Well i have gathered that you are most likely a teacher.
Now hoping that you are not a gym teacher and "the other side of the class" means the girls changing room........... most people have relied on a technology known as A MIRROR to view themselfs from the other side of a room, this highly advanced piece of "GLASS" has a reflective quality... i kid you not.... ive seen one, and the mind boogles.....
I do not know of any program specificaly designed for this function. however i do remember a thread somewhere about using your ppc as a web cam.
now if you were to use some sort of logmein or orb program that allows you to take control of the host web cam, in theory this would be possible.
But the question is.... has anyone had any experience with this... or what would the data/connection limits be? surely a hsdpa connection would be needed or wifi. in which case would it not be easier to install ORB on a pc at the end of the class (or wifes office, whatever)
I cant answer this question just yet, but rest assured, i will be combing the internet for an answer..... you may of triggered a voyeristic switch i had hidden.......erm.....
haha nah im not a teacher lol.....im in year 10 this year hehe
the cameras are always off unless the device have it started using normal camera app or videocard
and
"(like getting passwords or perving at people LOL)"
how on earth would a front or back camera be able to get a password?
it dont get the image from under the screen it cant see whats being displayed or written on the screen
it would be possible to do but would require an app running on both the sender and reciever
and it would prob have pretty poor fps
MS Portrait is software which can do peer to peer video, and with the right bluetooth stack, or even WIFI you could set up a peer to peer network connection.
I think its certainly possible, and I imagine such a setup would be useful if you wanted to keep an eye on your car outside while being in another room, or as an impromptu baby monitor.
Surur
Ok. i may have a solution
There is a program for ppc called coolcamera. This allows you to use your ppc as a web cam. Apparently you can use Webcam mode through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS/EDGE without ActiveSync.
If this is the case, rather than using a desktop pc you could use ORB or VNC to view the ppc1 image on ppc2.
And now that i understand that you are only in year ten, I feel increasingly guilty, as i am seriously doubting that you will not be using this "unethicaly"
As mention above, both ppc's will need to be set up, and active. so expect poor battery performance, and possibly awful fps.

killer WM App

Hi all!
I'm senior C# programmer and I want to develop a Windows Mobile Application with Compact Framework, but I want develop an useful application or tool that does not already exist. I have no limitations in programming or technology (gps, bluetooth, web services, ecc.).
Any idea/suggestion for this new app? Is there any application that is missing?
hey how about a touch guitar for the ppc..the one like we have in nokia 5800..there is a touch piano(known as omniano) for ppc but no touch guitar..!
What about a proper barcode reader/interpreter using the built-in camera? There are some tentative software but no trully good one out there. Could be good for personal databases like book collection.

Yea! I know! But it is no good! If what you are after is an idea that nobody had before, than I think it will be very difficult.
Here's an idea that might be something handy you could knock out fairly quickly: a battery drain indicator. An app that polls your battery life and generates a report telling the current rate of decrease (and maybe indicates what other applications are running and how often the backlight was on).
It'd be darn useful for trying to gauge the effect different ROMs and apps have on battery life.
There is no DLNA app for windows mobile as far as i know.
Would be good just to have one that can get pics, videos, music from over dlna machines.
Or as above a app that moniters battery drain to see the worse apps and roms for battery

I second this. I've started one, but it's pretty ugly, slow and buggy as I'm in no way a C# developer and I have no time to complete it. There are several battery monitors out there, but neither of them are really usefull.
If you are interested, PM me, I can share some further ideas.
A finger friendly message app instead of wm ugly tiny inbox, outbox etc

Hmm, a killer WM app? Well, I would imagine that it has to be something unique, and fairly difficult to create on other platforms or, hell, just the Windows Mobile platform.
Meh, the best idea I can come up with are these:
1) A GPS software that displays street level navigation (sort of like what was shown in Sony's new NV-U3DV).
2) A Hulu player
3) A program that scales programs/games not designed to work on a particular resolution
My, this was surprisingly difficult to think of.

Quote it!!! A real finger friendly msg app (a simple mail/sms client) will be the top!!
D'rath
how about a directory assistance program like they had on palm.
when someone calls u it automatically tells u who is calling giving the persons address and info
Killer App, how about something that ties Windows mobile together...not some much a launcher or something like but something that smooths everything out.
Maybe a simple program that transitions the screen of current gen devices to make landscape to portrait smoother.
Maybe a cool task manager is smooth and dynamic...(opengl) that flows through the open programs similar to Coverflo (this would be amazing) mix that with functionality.
How about when you open a new program, there is an onscreen popup that shows whats opening while the app is loading up. Similar to Opera or Winterface.
Maybe a unique Locksystem different from S2u2 and G1 Locker...Something graphical and beautiful. I love the growing panel and the fish panel for xperia, having something like that for a locker would be amazing....
I have dozens of ideas. but I'd say..
Music player=covered by S2P, Kinoma, Nitrogen
Pictureviewer=covered by imageviewer, s2v
Shells= too many to name
Iphoney= ad nauseum
I think we should be focus on making PPC more functional...That SMS app is really worth the time an effort as well.

This would be cool, although being a Windows user, I'd rather it be like Aero Flip than like Coverflow.
If you haven't seen it, check out TaskFacade -- it's more like Expose than Coverflow, but it's still a great app switcher with decent eye candy.
I've tried TaskFacade...love it..but it would be awesome to have a full blown beautiful app. I don't know if you've ever played around with Pocket Cm ImageViewer its amazingly beautiful. The way it displays pictures and how fingerfriendly it is it would be awesome to have taskmanager that flowed that smooth. Flick up on the application to end it, click on it to go to it. Would be amazing

Id love to have a Hulu Player but also would kill for a free Xbx Live app but i guess tht alrdy exist but the Hulu player is very orginal...Nice idea 8525Smart and i also like option 2
how about an onscreen semi-transparent dpad that can be toggled via a button on all apps? That way for phones without dpads or with dpads hat are not functional (touch pro) you can still use a dpad. This would help in gaming but also basic navigation.
You might consider putting your talents towards the finger friendly SMS application in the Development and Hacking section. They have nonfunctional, graphics only alpha versions, but they need developers to actually get the application functional. There's even a $275 bounty.

GPS software with Speed Logging and Replay

I'm trying to find a gps app to run on my Raphael that is capable of recording/logging a trip including timestamps.
I want to be able to replay the trip precisely, preferably on the phone, but if absolutely necessary I'd be willing to replay it on a laptop computer (I have a macbook pro and am running windows vista in a virtual machine) and logically I can replay it from a website as well.
Specifically, I want to be able to replay this in a courtroom in front of a judge, but I don't need to make a grand show of it (thus the reason I prefer replaying from the phone rather than carrying in a laptop).
Any advice would be great. I've considered writing my own app for this, but I really need to be able to replay the trip with graphical maps visible, which makes it more difficult to do. I've got TomTom installed already (which doesn't have this feature built-in as far as I'm aware).
tracking
I have not found a software which does what you are expecting, so I have acquired a TRACKSTICK PRO which does all what you require including tracing the trip on google earth!!
Hope this help
Chris from snowy Chamonix (France)
A completely new device, especially one without it's own ability to navigate would just add to an already excessive bunch of cables and take up a valuable power plug.
I can't figure out where or how to purchase one. The "get it now" button just takes you to a form to submit for them to call you back...This and the fact that it claims to be a "low-cost" solution makes me think that they aren't very interested in dealing with single unit sales.
Thanks for the advice, it's just not what I had in mind.

This looks pretty good I think. At least it's great for tracking and exporting, at least a little easier to work with than GpsGate which appears to only do NMEA sentences and a few file formats that nothing else reads. But this still leaves me trying to find the best way to present it.
I'd still like to be able to do sort of a playback of the trip rather than just data points on a map...and I'm still holding out hope for demonstrating the trip from my phone, but I'm starting to realize that none of the major GPS nav apps seem to have this feature, or at least I haven't found proof that they do. I think iGo might have a record/playback feature, but i haven't been able to verify.

Is an Android Tablet OK for a public kiosk application

Helly guys,
My city asked me for a public Internet kiosk locked on the Internet site of the city.
No need for fancy camera, flash, etc... It just needs to use a plain html/javascript/php light Internet site.
But I do need the tablet to power by itself connecting to default wi-fi by itself and loading the Internet site by itself. And good built quality.
Am I right to think an Android tablet could do the trick ?
Any Android app / tablet suggestion please ?
Thank you
Phil
Yeah man. Here in Bangalore, India cheap Android tablets are used at many public places including buses for similar applications as you stated. I don't know what cheap brand is available near your location, so look around and find some. Any of these cheap low-spec tablets running Froyo/Gingerbread will be enough to just run the web browser. They suck at everything else, but just for that one application they would be fine.
I didn't get what you mean by the tablet powering on by itself, but connecting to WiFi automatically and opening a specified homepage in browser are possible. As far as I know every Android device requires some form of button press to turn on the screen. Maybe there's a way to get them to turn on by touching the screen, I don't know.
Also, be aware that most of these cheap tablets aren't licensed by Google, so they won't have Market and other Google related services. You'll have to sideload apps to install them. They'll just be useful for the bare minimum functions of a tablet, and nothing more unlike a fancy Honeycomb/ICS tablet. Build quality is pretty OK for some of the ones I've seen, but some suck. You should look at and try out a few.
Good luck!
Click thanks if I've helped you.
Android Kiosk Mode
Phil,
You may need to root the android tablet you use, because just running your plain html/javascript/php light Internet site wouldn't be enough to keep public from finding themselves on Facebook etc. There are ways to lock down the content so the public stays on pages necessary without getting into menus on devices etc. As far as powering up device and turning it off, our company is doing something similar for tablets used in taxis. armoractive.com
are you sure that "over the counter" tablets are sturdy enough for your regular "I wont care to read the instructions so I'll punch the screen to make it work" customer?
This looks the case where a bit more money spent in custom hardening will make for a lot more money wasted in reparing later
I have pretty much the same question as the OP. I'd like to use an android tablet as a simple kiosk. Would anyone recommend a particular make/model that would be suitable? Needs to use a web browser plus show some decent video so I'm assuming the really cheap ones are out. I'd imagine I'll need to root it too. Then figure out how to lock it down, but first things first
Kiosk Lockdown Solution
Absolutely! You can install a Kiosk Lockdown Solution like MobiLock Pro & manage single or a fleet of devices right from unified web-based dashboad!

App Ideas? Share them! Developers come look!

I see alot of threads around xda requesting miscellaneous apps or ports. I have written down a lot of my ideas and I'm not quite to the stage where I can make them myself, and I'm sure a few others are in the same boat. I don't see much of a point to keeping them a secret when there are alot of capable developers around here. If there are developers out there with free time that see a cool idea in this thread, try to give a mention to the person if you create the app!
3rd party app toggle
Just an app similar to adb toggle, that quickly toggles on 3rd party app installs. It's not secure to leave it on all the time, and for people with settings locked it can cut the time taken to install a 3rd party app. If you're an overachiever try toggling all app installs, not just 3rd party.
Password Scanner
Basically an app that just scans /data for SQLite entries and lists items associated with password fields. Plaintext is enough to make it useful for a lot of people, with options of a pro-version that cracks encrypted passwords.
Car Remote
This is the most challenging one I've thought of. It's an app that uses the device's radio antennas to unlock cars that have remote control locks. I've looked into it and the encryption looks tough to break, but if you're a genius you can probably figure something out. Here's something to get started: auto.howstuffworks.com/remote-entry.htm
Time Machine
I thought of this while reading en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem
A mod/app that messes with the clock to cause app compatibility issues, which could enable potential root exploits on devices which don't have current root methods. This one is risky because it is likely it result in bricks (yet another use if you want a device to be bricked in the event of a theft). I'm unsure if something like this would need root access to work.
Share your ideas! My apologies if any of these have been thought of, it wouldn't be the first time I've rethought the wheel.
Wow, some nice ideas there! 3D party app can be a popular one. I also like the car remote app idea, but will it be helpful?
Found this video on a PDA for the car remote, it used infrared though..
Time machine looks interesting but can it be realized !

oh don't let me get started on the list of ports I want haha. Top 3 would probably be cain & abel, cisco packet tracer, and something like encase.
cs6 is would be nice for sure though, adobe is really slacking with their tablet app. I see something like gimp coming before photoshop due to it's source being more available.
i would really like something like frozen synapse on a phone i think it would work really well.

Car remote app will never work as each car uses some sort of encryption and frequency to unlock the door while the phone antennae can only transmit on 2G/3G/4G frequency bands.

and bluetooth, and wifi, and gps. There are a number of antennas in each phone. The one in the video I posted managed it with infrared.
I think car remotes work on the 400-500mhz spectrum so it will take some research to how compatible it could be with most phones, and that's not even exploring dongles.

My Nissan Altima Remote operates on 315Mhz whereas
Bluetooth operates on 2400–2480 MHz
GPS operates on 1575.42 & 1227.60 Mhz
Wifi operates on 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz
IR operates on 33 to 40 kHz or 50 to 60 kHz
All these antennae are not capable to transmit in any frequency band, they have been hardwired to operate on a particular band to save money and be power efficient.
Create a 'Date' contact ?
G'Day Guys
I have been searching for an app. now for a few years & have not been able to find one that 'fits the bill'
When I get a phone call from a new contact ( so not currently in the contact list )
Create the contact with the name as date eg. DD MM YYYY & mark it as blocked
Anyone know if an app. exists that can do this ?
or
Anyone interested in deving this app. for me ?
BTW - I have 40+ years experience programming in Assembler, C, Basic etc. & I built Palm apps. in C & built a couple of droid apps approx. 5 years ago with Phone Gap. Buy, not wanting to have to setup the environment for a simple droid app. dev.
