Well after a few torrid months of appalling service, I have been allowed to get out of my contract with Vodafone 21 months early with no penalty (!)
They just couldn't provide a service for me that worked, so after multiple complaints and even the TIO, I was able to port out to a new provider, the only thing that is a problem is they wanted the DHD back, they tried to tell me they were being gracious and offered me it for $500, I declined.
So... I have also had to jump hardware camps and I now have a Samsung Galaxy S I9000
The reason to tell you this?
The way you do things on it is TOTALLY WEIRD compared to the DHD, so far if I even fart it goes into a boot loop
I know it will be a week or so before I get my head round it, but to all you 'users' that keep asking obvious questions and think the DHD/HTC method is hard...
Try the bloody SGS
I'll keep looking in as I loved my DHD with LeeDrOiD, more in the hope he decides to do a ROM for the SGS....
Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
Do you miss the screen real estate that you had before?
jumping ship from htc for better phone is like flying out of tibet for a higher mountain

Totally agree. Samsung makes good hardware. They just suck with software. Again, this is all just personal preference. I don't like Touchwiz (looks too iPhone-y and toyish) and I don't like that they take so long to roll out updates (or none, here in the US).

Phone companies must not work the same when buying contract phones I guess as it does here in the States...So question for anyone in the UK, even if you cancel your contract halfway through a 2 year agreement, do you still have to give back the phone?

I think we might have one Samsung fan on the whole forum. I have a Samsung Epic 4G. Best hardware available (second only to the Atrix, now) and have 2.1 Eclair. Why can't the most capable single core line of phones get a f***ing upgrade??
F*** Samsung.
Enjoy your new phone dode , that ok you should hold back : )

****ing mind boggling.
As a Vibrant owner (since I haven't sold mine yet) I'm kind of pissed at this. It's like they're throwing salt in the wound. Samsung throws 2.2 on that phone before the one that's currently out, gives it a FFC which it was supposed to have from the get go (the hole for it is even there on the motherboard), and makes it HSPA+ capable? Will somebody please tell them that nobody's ever going to support them again since their apparent solution to the no update problem is to sell you a slightly updated version of the exact same phone instead of bringing the existing one with the same basic hardware up to the now out of date OS that it should have had 6 months ago.
in this case.. the Nexus S must of been the sequel to the Vibrant 4G *cough* Android 2.3 *cough*
Vibrant (2.1) -> Vibrant 4G (2.2) -> Nexus S (2.3 - forever)
Calm down folks. There's no release date and it likely won't be until at least next month. The i9000 will be almost a one year old phone by then, and the Vibrant was released last August, which makes it a 6 month old phone.
I'm not going to fault T-Mobile for releasing a better phone 6 months later; that's become a long time in terms of hardware development. I've resigned myself to a new phone every 6 months for as long as I feel compelled to have the "latest, greatest" device.
The picture looks like the same form factor as the current Vibrant; so if all the rest of the stuff is the same, that tells us that our NS, or even our Vibrants, are still pretty much top of the line devices.
Since this looks to be the same build as the current Vibrant, I wonder if it will have the same creaks and groans.
Since they've changed the radio chip (to support 21Mbs) I also wonder if it will still have the AT&T 1900Mhz 3G band support like the current Vibrant.

I agree, the Vibrant being replaced in less than 6 months with a better version once most people have already signed 2 year contracts is a tough pill to swallow for Vibrant owners.
It'd be like if Samsung came out with a "Nexus S Plus" in a couple of months that was more future proofed with HSPA+, SD card slot, HDMI output, etc... Nexus S owners would be pretty pissed and wouldn't want to be told to "calm down" either

Galaxy S2 will be revealed in February: Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/samsung-mobile-boss-confirms-galaxy-s-successor-galaxy-tab-road/
Considering these phones will likely get enough developer support to see ports of any and all new iterations of Android released from Google (which usually end up being better and more feature-rich than stock anyway); considering you can replace Touchwiz (quite easily even without rooting); considering bloatware doesn't *really* do any harm; and considering Google only releases two major updates a year to the current Nexus phone, it makes me reconsider my position and the worth of the Nexus line.
Everyone will have different preferences, of course, but a lot of me wishes Google would directly challenge Apple with a "Google Experience" phone that isn't meant only to appease developers. In other words, a phone that does compete hardware wise, that does have a more uniformed OS experience that would cater to average-users, while retaining the customizable options and variety that sets the Android experience apart from iOS. That wouldn't sound bad at all.
Perhaps I just got the wrong phone, or perhaps I'm finding out Android isn't for me. Unfortunately, i don't agree with Apple's "the average user is an idiot" philosophy either. For what it's worth, I'm just thinking out loud.

The Vibrant's official release date was supposed to be July 21, 2010, but looks like it came out a week early though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S#In_the_United_States
Let's see, August, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan...that's 6 months right there, and by the time this new Vibrant Plus comes out (next month, maybe later) it will be 7-8 months or more. There's no announced release date yet that I've seen.
Also, I know we're talking about the T-Mo Vibrant, but it's only a slight variant of the original i9000. I have owned both, and even disassembled both. They both use the same display, touchscreen, same cpu, same gpu, same just about everything internally except the radio and the capacitive buttons. You can even put the i9000 FFC into a Vibrant by just removing some paint, and I've place the Vibrant's speaker assembly into an i9000.
My point was that the basic technology of the ENTIRE Galaxy S line of phones is almost a year old now. The i9000 was demo'd in April 2010, and available for purchase in June 2010. In the phone world, 9-12 months is a very long time...they need to provide something new and exciting to sell more phones, and a 21Mbs radio probably fits that bill.

But that's the reality of COMPETITION. Samsung Mobile exists to sell phones. They have to constantly come up with something that will tempt new buyers. Welcome to world of technology, and economics 101...there will always, make that ALWAYS be a better gadget out in just a few months.
Apple's in a class by itself...not that it's better than the others, but they have a very loyal and large audience that will only buy iPhones. They can get away with a longer product cycle because of that. I'm not sure how long that will last, though.
And if you hadn't noticed, there are probably a whole lot of angry iPhone 4 users who signed a 2-year contract for an AT&T iPhone 4 last July that are now pissing and moaning that it's not fair that they can get an iPhone 4 on Verizon now. That's just the way it is with cell deals and subsidies...if you don't like it, don't buy a phone under contract. I've paid cash and non-subsidized every phone I've bought in the last 18 months, including my iPhone 4.
Hey guys come on it's a "customer favourite"
If you hate Samsung for making the Vibrant Plus in the first place, you're REALLY going to hate them after reading this: http://androidspin.com/2011/01/12/b...samsung-is-holding-the-android-world-hostage/
Allegedly they have Froyo ready to go for the Vibrant, but won't let T-Mo push it OTA for fear of hurting sales of the Vibrant Plus.
Why didn't the nexus s have the hspa+ and I feel like everyone that got the vibrant just got screwed.

Yeah I agree. It reminds me of when the Nexus One came out and set a standard for smartphones and looked really classy which caused alot of people to become loyal followers.
I wonder how long Apples loyalty will last if they don't set a new standard like they did with the iPhone 4 and you have a bunch of crazy Android phones (Atrix, Bionic, Optimus, etc) breathing down their neck?

For my part I hope Samsung do more both hardware, and software, testing before launching the SIII.
On Tuesday I'm going to send my S2 and Tab 10.1 back for repair.
The S2 have random locs/reboots and somewhat loose homebutton.
The TAB has watermarks/newton-rings.
Maybe I have been unlucky with my first Samsung devices but I have never had devices, 30-40 phones and pc's over the years, with faults like this after only 2 months use.

Halo: ODST
Cr-48
A game I can't name at this time( They will come to get me if name it.)
And now the Iphone ok.
P.S Ok so not a lot, but you get the point. The Cr-48 was the coolest to me and I have not had the phone for long they are just geting them in. I did not think every one would be so mad, but the ICS thread should have spelled it out for me.
Now about the Iphone part, I was just saying I am unlikey going to buy the S3, but it should be cool and I can't wait to see it.
Edit: You will all see the truth on 09/4/11.
Hi all. As I'm sure you can see, this is my first post on XDA. This seemed like the perfect smartphone related community, so I joined up, and I look forward to becoming a long time active member. Now, to the point of this thread. I am looking to pick up my first ever smartphone(yes yes let the laughter out, I still own a Nokia from the stone age, and its' embarrassing to pull it out in public lol). I really had my heart set on the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE. By the way, I am from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and am a Rogers Wireless customer, and that is their version of the Samsung Galaxy S II. But after extensive research, which actually brought me to XDA, I found out that they have a massive screen defect issue with the vertical lines and blobs. Although, some people, from what I've read, have said that it isn't such a big deal, while others just can't stand it. With that information, I am back at square one. I do not know what phone to get. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is just way too big in my opinion, as I have held one. And next to Samsung, I think the best wireless company would probably be Motorola. With that, I was thinking about possibly picking up the Motorolo RAZR. Is that a good choice over the Galaxy S II? Bad choice? It has gotten some stellar reviews, but it seems that the Galaxy S II is the superior phone out there. So my question is, what should I get? I know a few people that have had issues with their HTC's, so I'm not really leaning toward them. What should I do? This is driving me crazy. I want a new phone sooooo badly, but don't know what to choose. Any help or advice is truly appreciated!! Thank you so much.
Motorola doesn't look so good when it comes to updating their devices, if you are to consider that the atrix has not been announced on their road map to ICS. That may change, but for now, it doesn't look like they are keen on updating their devices.
Just to point it out, every phone has issues, but usually it is a minority that experience these issues. So just saying, a HTC phone will have the same amount of issues as a Samsung one. But now comes my bias, I love my sgs 2, and would fully recommend it.
I'd go for the LTE SII, it's a very nice phone and one problem that only a couple people are reporting should never discourage you from getting a good phone
Wait. Wait for more native ics phones. If you can hold out, I'd recommend you wait for a phone that already has the new firmware.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
well my suggestion goes against what you are looking for, but it's a rock solid performer; HTC Droid Incredible 2. it's a 3G only device, it's about six months old, and has a great community behind it. there are a few great stock ROMs to select from, and quite a few Sense 3.5 ROMs as well.
this is my first android device, and my second HTC device. i am very happy with it, and i have no buyer's remorse given the latest and greatest new phones on the market. it handles everything i throw at it, it has no compatibility issues on the Market for my uses. i'm not much of a phone gamer, but it plays my tower defense games like Sentinel 3 smoothly.
battery life is great for me. i can get a day out of it with my normal use; gmail on push, about an hour's worth of calling, 40-50 sms, 30-45 minutes of gaming, 30 minutes of forum and web browsing, and maybe 100MB of downloads.
give our forum a look-see, i think you may be impressed. but is you have your heart set on LTE, you will have to look elsewhere.

You know, every phone has its defect. Theres just no such phone that doesnt have any problems with its production.
You saw many messages about defective screen, thats only because SGS2 is one of most popular smartphones right now, and there are many buyers. Many phones, some % of them is defective.
Happy ppl got their SGS2 without defect and they are using it, and dont complain. But only those who got some problem, go to forum, do research and so on. They post about their problem. There are many ppl with such problems, but there are much more ppl who are lucky to have their phone without any defects or whatever problems.
Chances to get such phone with defect is very small. Theres just some % of phones which are defective. Imagine situation: 100 motorolas sold out, 1 of them (1%) was defective . You go to forums and see only 1 post about defective phone. 100000 SGS2 sold out, and 1000 of them (its same 1%) was defective. You go to forums and see OMG 1000 posts about defective SGS2, but it is the same % as motorolas. Just different quantity.
all the numbers I used are just an example
So.. SGS2 is a good choice.

Yeah, I started thinking about this as well before making my decision. And in a worst case scenerio if I do get a defective one, I can exchange it for a brand new device. Thanks for all the input fellas. Much appreciated.

Wait. Wait for more native ics phones. If you can hold out, I'd recommend you wait for a phone that already has the new firmware.

All I want to say is, google please get project glass out to the public asap. I want to try it. the project glass presentation (the stunts) was the best in any conference. but that girl presenter (the redhead) was boring as hell, almost killed show. I know some will think that wearing this thing will look stupid in public (I kinda think that way)...but i want to try it.
JB coming in mid july..and we just got ICS...-_-
actually thinking about selling the tmobile sg2 to get the galaxy nexus since it just dropped in price to $350. the only thing holding me back is the 21mb vs 42mb hspa+ for tmobile since i use my phone to tether and the speed matters.

Woah, did you find a post that was off topic? Thanks for protecting us from Android related discussion, bro!
the JB didn't look so much different from ICS. i mean it IS "4.1" not 5.0
it looks like a little bit tweaked ICS. i'm pretty sure the devs here or cyanogenmod team would be able to bring JB experience soon. official JB would take forever with the Touchwiz overlay and bloatware of course.
even so, i'm sure we'll definitely get it official or unofficial since our phone is better in hardwares compared to the galaxy nexus.
nexus 7 is definitely making my wallet go crazy though.

I already have a buyer offering me 380, I'm sad to let my gs2 go though (first Android phone)
Also gotta T-Mobile S2. I highly doubt this phone will get JB seeing how it just got ICS not even 2 weeks ago. Not gonna sell it for a nexus tho, i like the camera on mine and I'm sure there will be a new nexus phone this year.
If I see another crappy metro/huawei or no name device with sub-par or similar hardware compared to our phone running official ics, jb or cm10.1 I'm going to grab it and light it on fire. When I bought this phone it was a toss up between the galaxy s2 and the g2x. I bought the g2x because Mr. T-Mobile man talked me into it (they were the same price.) This was before I really knew anything about android as far as rooting and custom firm of course. This device could easily be given an official ICS update at the VERY least. LG screwed us, hard and long. On a scale of 1-10 I give this screwing a 9, ONLY because the amazing developers we have here stretched this device to its absolute limits and continue to do more. If it weren't for them, well I don't even want to think about that. So on a scale of 1-10, how hard do you feel you've been screwed by LG?

I'd actually rate it as a screwing of 10. The awesome quality of roms, updates and patches that the developers here have provided doesn't change the fact that LGE ****ed us over. I made A LOT of noise about this to Wind Mobile here in Canada early on because I didn't quite understand that it wasn't the carrier holding me back (Wind's P999 is still officially on Froyo if I'm not mistaken ... I installed CM7 immediately so I don't know if one update ever made it out).
Nothing but love for everyone here who tried to squeeze some additional life out of this device. Hell, if giveen manages to get the radio working (others have tried previously) then I'd say the G2x can once again be a half decent phone.
It's truly a shame that a vendor as large as LG would treat a community of consumers so poorly. Never again LG, never again ...
I'm going to say almost no chance off me getting radio to work. I'm being honest.
I've looked over it, examined it with a few other dev's and a couple programmer friends and everything points that it should work, the only thing we can't look at is the precompiled RIL
I don't think they screwed us that bad. From the get go lots of people had issues with this phone and chances are they have a new phone by now. I've had mine for 2 1/2 years now. Its the only phone I've been able to keep. Yes a working ics would be awesome but when I bought the phone I had no idea what any of that was lol. I played w/ a nexus4 and even though it was cool didn't feel the need to spend all that money for features I wouldn't use. Everything I need to do I can do on this phone. So on a scale of 1-10 I would give a 5 only because they screwed alot of people from the get go.

Its all because of the tegra 2 chip, it was no longer supported by them...although samsung still does which is odd and awesome :0 stupid LG... if it had a qualcomm chipset it would still be have support from LG therefore never buy tegra devices lmao:silly:
10! Terribly mishandled by lg and they wiped their hands clean and pretended phone never existed. Backlight bleeding, major software issues even on gingerbread, yea we all know the potential it had but oh well. Ran with it for two years and glad to have left this junk phone behind

That's too bad, but knowing the amount of effort you and others have invested no one will complain (or shouldn't at least )
As soon as my contract is up and I can dump this phone without having to pay the remainder of the "Wind tab", I will be glad to move on to something that's NOT an LG product.

Yeah, I am pretty disappointed myself. I came in here thinking that it would be a snap but I ended up stuck just as everyone else.
Its always proprietary files that are the issue.
It's not LG, not really. It's the carrier. Cheap ass carriers like wind (froyo) and tmo (gb) are the real fault. It's not Tegra either, since p990 got ics.

I'm pretty sure it is LG though. If LG doesn't release updates to the carriers, the carriers can't spend months and months injecting bloatware into those updates before releasing them to us. the suckers ...er customers.

Then why did T-Mobile get GB and Wind did not? Wind ROMs have no bloatware at all.
From what I heard Wind didn't get the update because they didn't sell enough sets. That to me kind of makes sense.
The noob says:
In the absence of a valid argument, 2+1=3 may be used to explain why the g2x did not get the ICS update!

It still sucks ... especially for those of us suckers (*cough* me *cough*) who still have 14 months to go on their no contract "contract" with Wind.
Oh well, live an learn. This experience made me so wary of LG that I didn't snap up a nexus 4 when they were on sale in the play store
should have gotten it. Updates for the nexus are handled by Google directly, NOT LG....thank god lol

What contract? if you want out buy the phone from them. Really and truthfully you are buying the phone either up front or to cancel the "contract" they do not hold you in nor charge you more then needed to pay for the phone. I still don't understand why this concept is so hard for people to understand.
i would give a 9 for my experience with LG. within months the headphone jack went bad and would barely hold the plug, the usb port is crappy, and sometimes wouldn't charge properly (both were denied under warrenty. The lack of updates is the biggest issues. The only reason this phone had life is because of the Hard work of modders then they went and fudged all that with the new base band update that broke the Bluetooth for modded phones.
At the time this was suppose to be their flagship phone, it was also the beefiest and fastest phone on the market, I was told like may others it will be updated only to get nothing out of it. Worse is that they allowed and branded it incorrectly in the Canadian Market.
I'll give it a point since it was built like a brick, i have dropped it so many times (after the aforementioned issues) and it still kept chugging for just over 2 years, eventually the screen went weird and acted like someone was constantly tapping it so i swapped it with an S4, a phone i know for sure will be supported and i can actually find proper accessories for it. The price point of the Nexus 5 is temping for sure, but when i check most cell phone stores in my area They carry mainly iphone and samsung accessories, which make up over 80% of the stock in some stores. This goes to show the popularity of the phones

It's not hard to understand at all, it just kind of sucks. The "original" price was $350 for the phone, which the Windtab covers (and nullifies at the end of 3 years). After 24 months, the tab is sitting at $290. I could buy the phone out, but it seems like a waste of money. I'm otherwise happy with wind so I'll keep an eye out for a replacement phone and just wait another year for the "contract" to expire.
I tend to ***** about the G2x mostly since it seemed to hold so much promise, was dropped very quickly by the manufacturer, and as a result I've got something that can't be updated, but I still have to pay for. I probably wouldn't complain as much if I'd already finished paying for the phone

The original premise of Wind was no contracts, you buy a phone from them full price, choose a plan, choose a payment option (pre or post paid) and done. People wanted subsidized phones so they brought out the Wind tab. Here you are paying for the phone AFTER you used it not before, there are still no extra fees for it if you want to leave early. And it's 24 months, never has it been 36 months. In the end you are still buying the phone and used it for quite some time now, except now for you it's $290 vs $350, you still saved money I don't get how It's not worth it?
Initially wind tab would take 36 months to pay off, after the CRTC changed the rules all the providers have now switched to 24 months. Only customers who got the plan after the rule change get the 2 year tab, the rest have to complete the full 3 years
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
This was more of a gangbang situation. Lg got some, nvidia got some, and T-Mobile got a piece too. And if you're unfortunate enough to be screwed by wind they seem even more despicable still! Wind definitely deserves a 10.
Lg 8 for putting this particular modem on this particular phone.
Nvidia 4 for being present lol
T-mobile 5 for acting like this phone was the poop and then tossing it like a dirty diaper.
On the brighter side a lot of us are reaching the end of the line with this thing and if nothing else it's been a great learning experience. This phone is so picky about kernels and settings and charging that we've had to become super disciplined about how we treat our phone or else it burns your nightstand. Plus having witnessed the long and frustrating journey of many devs pushing this phone just a little further each time has definitely enlightened me on how hard these guys work for something we all profit from. Holy crap this post got long! My bad. Carry on.

Granted but he shouldn't really be complaining about the price of a phone he bought a year ago and using all this time, he should pay the price of when he started using it, not how much it's worth a year later, it's really just a selfish attitude
