After days of configuration and test, I finally made Kies work with outlook 2010 on Win 7 (x64).
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (SGH-i896)
OS: Froyo
Carrier: Rogers
First I need to thank everyone who posted their experiences which benefit me a lot.
Here is my experience:
1. Get the latest version of Kies from Samsung Europe or Asia site. Check updates and install if exists.
2. Find Kies.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Kies , right click it and select properties. In compatibility Tab, choose Win XP (sp3), and Choose “Run this program as administrator”.
3. Do the same thing for KiesTrayAgent.exe.
4. Make sure drivers for your captivate are correctly installed. If you are not sure. Try install drivers again from Kies ->Tools
5. Connect your Captivate to USB and choose Samsung Kies mode.
6. If you have problem sync Contacts, try to run SCANPST.EXE from your outlook program folder.
7. Most important of all, (I figured this all by myself), if your Captivate is rooted and you installed OCLF lagfix V2.2+, you won’t have any chance to make Kies to work with your phone. So, remove OCLF lagfix V2.2, you will find everything works fine now. You may have to apply OCLF lagfix V2.2 again then remove it to make Kies work.
Good luck.
After I removed OCLF, I tried Voodoo lagfix. I found that Sync is OK. However, Voodoo 5.4.1 caused a lot problem on system, like none function Home Button, reversed speaker and headset (sound comes from speaker when headset plugged in, then no sound from speaker when unplugged.)
I had to flash my Captivate (i896). Spent hours to get back to Rogers Froyo.
Yeah that happened because the voodoo lagfix you installed is not for Rogers i896 captivate, its for i9000. I am still searching for a link to voodoo for i896 running stock froyo. I really need for Rogers captivate users running froyo + voodoo lagfix to say where they got the working file from... because the one on the official voodoo site is not for our phone.

I want to get cognition 2.2 but when my computer doesn't recognize my phone when i plug it in, so i can't install ROMs from the computer. Can you install cognition by a QR code or what? Is there something better that cognition that i should install? Please help.

Do you have USB debugging enabled? Check and see and if not, go to USB settings and check mass storage. Move the downloaded ROM to your SD card and open up Rom Manager. Make sure you install Clockwork Recovery Mod First and then select install ROM from sd card. It will reboot your phone into recovery mode, then use the volume buttons and power button to select re-install packages, this will send you into Clockwork recovery mode. Select install ROM from SD card, and choose the .zip ROM and install. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR PHONE USING MYBACKUP OR TITANIUM BACKUP!
I also have a ROM that I am using on my phone that I think is better than Cognition. It's called Dorian's UGJK3 2.2 Gingerbread Edition and it's basically a gingerbread theme over 2.2. You would also install this over 2.1 with ROM manager.

I suggest you do some more reading before installing roms, if you can't even copy a file to the phone i can't even imagine what you're going to do if something goes wrong and you need to flash the phone with odin.
Head to the captivate dev section and read the stickies.
My phone originally came with 2.1 Éclair and I upgraded it with Kies Mini the official AT&T way. Then I rooted it with Shortfuse's SuperOneClick method. I was not satisfied though and I wanted to get Cognition 4.3.1 but later found out that you needed to have 2.1 to do that. So I used Odin to go back to 2.1 and then I rooted my phone again with the same method as before. Then I installed Cognition 4.3.1 with Rom Manager FREE version. When my phone booted up, it had Cognition on it but it was not rooted anymore. I still had SuperUser on it but when I opened apps that needed root like TitaniumBackup Pro, it wouldn't allow me saying I wasn't rooted. So then I tried to root my phone with SuperOneClick again and it would work. It said it was successful but it still wouldn't work. I tried to root it with the OneClick and SuperOneClick and both wouldn’t work. After countless times of failing, I tried using my phone to call someone and it wouldn't let me and would start vibrating every 1-2 seconds. So now, what I did was put it in download mode and used Odin again to go back to my original 2.1 and did a master clear with Odin and a factory reset through my phone, and cognition was gone and all I was left with was 2.1 stock firmware, non-rooted, and I was mad.
Now my question is:
Can your phone be rooted and be running Cognition 4.3.1 at the same time? Is that possible or can I just have Cognition 4.3.1 only and not rooted? Is there a possible way to have both?
If there is a way, can you please give me some step by step instructions on how I can do it?
I understand how to root my phone and install Cognition on my phone but when I installed Cognition, the root was lost. Any ideas would be appreciated please.
Samsung Captivate Cognition 4.1.3. w/ Odin 3 flash
Hey Daniel. I had the same problem & trust me they happen. I went to the tube & found a
3 part vid on cognition install with Odin flash & at first it didnt work for me. So I reflashed to
2.1 stock with Odin & followed everything to a t.....having patience watching the vids. I kinda
enjoyed it & was able to effectively flash my Samsung Captivate to Cognition 4.3.1 that is based
off of froyo 2.2 (by the way). Cog is smooth & fast & works great with home launchers!
Enter Samsung captivate rom & look for the mobile tech vid of Cognition. (older firmware used
in vid but all works the same). My phone is way faster than 2.2 stock and I grabbed a ADW from
the market to change the home launcher and all my buds want me 2 do there phones now!
Just be patient, its worth it. You will glad you were when your phone is better than new.
When I use mini kies it says my device is unregistered and I it won't let me update. How do I fix this?
1. Make sure you registered your device with Samsung
2. I think you have to be on KD1 for it to register; they look for official release versions (though I think a tweaked KD1 works fine)
I'm having the same issue but I haven't had a chance to try and flash back form GB to KD1.
Just wait for a dev to grab the ROM and put it here so you can flash it via Odin or CWM. I think Raver is on it.
I think mine is on Kc1 where can I get Kd1?
Upgrading from Deodexed KD1 works fine. (Has to be KD1). Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063696
I Odined mine back to KB5 last week. Then registered and got to KD1. Got KJ6 yesterday.
For me, Kies update fails on Win7x64, so I needed to do it on an XP machine. Others have said they don't have the problem with Win7. Another factoid I read was that the Kies update might fail if IE9 was installed
I odined the KD1 from here then flashed with mini, it works fine on win7 64 and internet exploder 9
You need to be at stock KD1 so Kies will recognize your phone and then download/apply the update.
I am having issues getting Kies to update my rooting and rommed phone to gingerbread. The reason I want stock gingerbread is because most of the ROMS out there now for cappy are sluggish and battery isn't good. Here are the things i've tried
1. Tried going back to stock with odin
2. Tried to download kies using united kingdom method
3. Download mode
4. Debugging mode
Every time I get "device cannot be upgraded" I have tried to search the forums and I have tried everything I see that is relevant. Still no go. Without an "official" stock gingerbread odin, this is pretty frustrating. I would love a Cognition build for gingerbread but have PM'd DG and got no response... So if someone knows a sure way to do this I would be grateful if you could share
According to this thread it looks like they've (temporarily?) pulled the gingerbread update. I'm hoping they fix the tetheringmanager force-close problem that it had.
I think you have the same problem I had with Kies Mini. Here is how I fixed it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223&highlight=nv+data+bin
Some how, some time, some where along all my flashing my product ID changed from ATT and Kies Mini would not recognize my phone.

Isn't he referring to the Infuse when saying they pulled it down?
Just a reminder that your phone has to be fully charged before you start the updates. Kies detects your battery and will reject your updates. What screen are you making it to? Are you allowed to click for the update, then get rejected?
It turns out that my product code got changed, even though I was backing up my EFS folder. I managed to get my product code changed back and backed up that nv_data.bin file and all is working as it should now. Thanks for all the help
Ive had my samsung infuse rooted and something happened? had to reboot back to stock... superoneclick seems to get stuck and not root my phone!! does it not work anymore? even when i download it from shortfuse... Ive dissabled usb debug....ive enabled usb debug....nothing works help
yeah I had the same issue with super one click on stock stock from GTG's unbrick
you may want to update to UCKE5/one or two builds above the stock build.
thanks how do i get this? from where? I cannot seem to get my cwm to open in the red!
you could probably just run this in odin to get back to UCKE3 which was stock in North America if you bought the phone a month after it came out. (Was stock for my phone when I bought it a month after it came out anyway).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112555
This has the bonus of already being rooted btw.
Anyway, UCKD5 is the rom that doesn't work with superoneclick properly from what I can tell which was stock when it came out and is GTG's ultimate unbricker's rom.
Don't use the pit because you most likely won't need it (your phone boots and all that stuff, right. If so, don't bother with repartitioning)
From here you're rooted and can setup modified 3E with root explorer and CWM with whatever you wanna use to set it up.
I used "[ODIN][UCKD5] Odin - Stock (100% or Root+3e)" (from Super Thread) to get to stock.
Then went to market and loaded SGS Kernel Flasher.
Then I downloaded Infused GB Core A2 kernel.
After I flashed the kernel, I had red CWM and went from there. Worked really well!
issues still
Download? How? Multiupload no good! mega no good either
They've been mirrored. I think. Not near pc.. No mirrors from me.
