Rooting and battery life - myTouch 4G General

Hey guys,i just got my glacier the other day, and I am enjoying it quite a bit. I was just wondering if I should root. Actually i will root, but idk if ishould flash cm7 or just keep sense. Cause I like some of the features on sense, such as the favorite contacts stuff and the fact that app compatibility is not lost.
Do you guys think flashing cm7 is a good idea? Also, by how much does it increase battery life and performance?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

Your basic question is about personal preference. There are those who prefer Sense, and those who don't. CM7 is not yet in Beta, though I'm quite happy with it as an end user. There is nothing I miss in the stock ROM, and there are many features of CM and Gingerbread that I would miss if I returned to stock. I also get better battery life and higher performance, but those are not the prime motivation for sticking with CM.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #31

Ok, thank you. I will go ahead and flash it. I can always go back to sense. Mostly I was just wondering about the battery life and performance improvements.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

for me, flashing CM7 from stock more than doubled my battery life (~10hrs to ~26hrs) and performance-wise...runs a lot faster and smoother. Im using Launcher Pro instead of ADW that comes with it, better performance. I do miss the easy contact syncing with other apps like facebook, but I can do without it. Give it a shot when you get rooted, just make sure you do a backup of stock so you can revert back if you dont like CM7. You can also try out Iced Glacier, pretty much a stock sense ROM without all the bloatware

What I don't like about Sense:
The music app doesn't auto landscape.
The contacts app doesn't auto landscape.
Other than that, Sense is pretty stable.
I'm hesitent to jump on CM7 nightlies because with every build, everyone says it's stable and great but they still report an issue. "Oh it's stable and awesome! But my screen is upside down and my wifi doesn't work." It's like, what? How is that stable?
I'm on Evil's Z 0.7.0 rom and this thing is SOLID. The performance and battery life are amazing, it's close to stock and it looks great. G2's rom should've been on this thing from the start.

I'm loving CM7 and the improved battery life, the only thing I miss from sense is the camera app.

Personally I like both. I had CM7 for a while, its good! Then I started to miss sense and I flashed it back. Certain things I like about the stock rom that isn't on vanilla.

So many choices! Which ROM are YOU using and why?

I'm torn between all these choices. Please tell me what you're using and why.
Make sure to mention battery life, performance, and useful features please.
Also, how does the rom mount the sd internal and external sd? Stock - as in there's a folder called _ExternalSD, or like how CM7 does it, using External as primary and having the emmc folder as secondary?
Trigger 2x...because I can make my clock blue to match my Steel Blue CM7 theme, lol. No, seriously...that's why.
Plain CM7 rom. The ability to have a relatively stock look, hide the clock and change the battery indicator to a percentage rather than just an icon.
I used to use Bionix2, but it still suffered instability issues (random reboots) etc.
Only complaint between both roms is that the pictures in my contact screen have a small little white bar underneath with thre little suqare dots which kind of irritates me.
I dislike the market that comes with CM7, but it seems that's the new stock look. (Which blows.)
I prioritize customization and battery life, and this rom gives me both.
CM7 -- Most stable and stock looking. I also like the fact that everything is customizable and nothing looks "cheap". Also battery life is important to me. If a rom drains my battery it's pretty much nixed.
I use CM7 because it just works great.
However I've been liking MIUI. I have Nandroids of both that I flip back and forth, and update where possible. So I have 2 current builds of Miui and CM7 that I run.
MIUI isn't quite where it needs to be for a final daily driver but with that I had, I made it work. The downfall was APN Cell data was hit or miss requiring resets, it would get blazing hot, the battery drain was horrible. I did 3 full charges through the day just to get by (morning wake up, around 2pm, around 7pm, then bed). I was hammering it though but shouldn't drain that bad. I did install a MIUI Digital Clock Widget which I'm thinking is causing the extra battery drain. Next time I boot into it I'll remove it and see where it gets me.
MIUI is ascetically pleasing to the eye. It is very pretty and fun to use. I love the dialer and the big icons and the Settings menu colors.
MIUI is based off CM7 so eventually it will be ironed out where it is just as stable but until then it is just my play OS.
I have just found out that I can replace Launcher Pro with Go Launcher or ADW EX finally because I found a LP Widget replacement called "Colorized Widgets". They work and feel just like the LP versions but work on GO and ADW.
So now I'm running CM7 with the Captivated theme, GO Launcher with a "Blue Theme" that has iPhone/MIUI icons and a glass look, and Colorized Widgets with the "Transparent" theme.
MIUI, I'm running Stock Launcher, Colorized Widgets, iTap Keyboard (iPhone themed Gingerbread keyboard).
Nice Setup.
So everyone using CM7 are you using RC1 or nightlies? Is there even a big difference? Would it be worth it to do the nightlies?

You sure about that?
I always thought that MIUI was custom done by some Chinese developers?
Flashing each stock CM7 nightly has been incredibly stable for me and the battery usage for the past couple of weeks has been amazing. Then again, I'm not overly hard on my phone by using the screen a lot like some folks do, I'm more prone to using my Transformer for gaming and general web browsing than I am my phone. I've never had any major bugs on CM7, but most of the general bugs that people complain about being on the phone are also completely foreign to me. I've also never used a fully stock G2x rom, my phone was shipped to me by another XDA user with a custom rom based on the GB release that I replaced with CM7 within a day or two, so my experience with with stock issues is absolutely non-existent.
I use CM7 because it was far less buggy than every other rom I tried in the dev section, and I used an iPhone against my will for almost a month, so MIUI is hideous to me by now aside from the bugs it still has. My first Android device was a first week release G1 and I still love stock Android. I've never been a fan of most of the UI overlays that vendors make (althogh the newer Sense is nice and some of the Touchwiz for 3.0 features are tempting) and I prefer to be allowed the choice of what I want my phone to look like. CM7 is the most stock rom I've seen that's also very stable. Also, I enjoy reading the CM changelogs. I'm trying to relearn how to code again and the diffs that the CM changelogs give are very enlightening and enjoyable to read.
I usually keep my phone underclocked a bit to 800Mhz max and screen off is underclocked quite a bit more. When I'm at home I leave data off and WiFi on (goes to sleep when the screen is off) and the battery can last for almost 3 days that way without hardly moving at all. When on data I get 8-20 hours or more depending on how much I'm traveling (switching towers drains battery) and how much I have the screen on. On full blast the shortest I've had the battery run was 4-6 hours of playing a game like Zenonia 3 without stopping. Using WiFi tethering the battery usually lasts 4-8 hours depending on how much I tax the phone's modem. Even underclocked the phone performs exceptionally well and I've never had any slowdowns during games or programs. I haven't had to reboot my phone, pull the battery, any random reboots or shutdowns, no APN issues, anything. Then again, I do reboot my phone every time a nightly is released which can be several days in a row or a lull for a few days at a time. I haven't had much luck running custom kernels but I haven't tried much other than faux's UV kernel so that's not much to go on. The stock CM7 kernel is just too stable for me for me to feel like changing it much.
I can only say that now that an official 2.3 release is out for this phone that roms will only get more interesting and hopefully more stable than they already are.. It already seems that there is a glut of developer interest in this device. Just one look in the development subforum shows the better part of a dozen choices in roms and much more activity than many places I've visited on XDA for a while.
I used CM7 if I had a second G2X to put other roms on.

Yes, it's 100% based off cm7 source. (If you don't believe me, go to their forums, and look. Right now they are caught up to about nightly 85 I believe.)

Wow, that was very detailed! Thanks. Quick question, what are some main advantages of the nightlies vs RC1?
EaglesBlood CM7 + Faux's OC/UV kernel + launcherpro
it's fast, it's stable, has the notification power widget, runs netflix.. nothing more i could ask for
except maybe the LG cam.. but either that or the notification widget.. i chose the widget
E: from the post above I underclocked it to 800mhz.. will see how much battery life i get so far no noticeable slowdown
Trigger 2x
It's been the most stable and feature full experience on my G2x. I've been using it since build 11, I just flashed build 14, and am loving it.
MIUI/cm7 practically the same, love all the features.

The nightlies are more up to date and actually more stable than the RC. I'm running 93 right now and it's been going smooth all night.
I'm still rockin froyo with Fauxs kernel on ultimate rom.

I would go with GB but im gonna wait a while till all this baseband and camera app get ported by the guru's. Still can't believe they dumbed down the functionality of the camera on an update lol

So out of those 5 which do you guys recommend: battery wise, speed wise, simplicity, and usefulness
Also, of the sense roms which are protected from htc's security logging and if they aren't how would i go about fixing the problem without removing sense completely
And any aosp roms besides cm7 that you recommend: battery wise, speed wise, simplicity, and usefulness
And any other miui roms besides Trips that you recommend: battery wise, speed wise, simplicity, and usefulness
Also what is the best kernel: battery wise, performance wise

Melvins Beast rom w/No Sense!!
CM7 of course
for what you listed, CM7 is what you're looking for
InserCoin, if u like Sense, otherwise CM7
Your decision.

Lol the more I read this the more it bothers me.
Of the four requirements you listed two of them are subjective (simplicity, usefulness). If you're gonna call this an open discussion, frame the questions so we can compare facts against facts, rather than opinions.
Like what do u mean by usefulness? CM7 is useless to me since I hate the keyboard and camera. But based on the criteria u set, it's very fast with decent battery. Simplicity? Di u mean which Rom has the least settings so u can't make any changes to optimize the phone to suit your needs?

Cm7 + faux kernel. As simple or complex as you like to make it, great battery life, no sense logging, and every interaction responds notably fatter than sense. Camera lacks a little its true but its good enough for now until they finish fixing it.
Remember also its an alpha release so not quite finished yet but its still very stable for daily use.s

Tried ARHD, Insertcoin and CM7 v7.
First of all, I use Go Launcher EX (over Sense and ADW).
The fastest was ARHD 3.1.1 with built-in kernel. CF-bench scored higher than SGS2 and all 3d games worked perfectly, but battery life was weak. 100% to zero in 1,5 hour when using with screen on (stock battery).
Then I tried CM7 v7. Go Launcher worked perfect, like on other mentioned roms. But, CF-bench score was really low, much lower than Sensation should have according to CF-bench graphs. You probably say, that I shouldn't care about benchmarks. Yes, it's true, but... CM7 was also weak in games! I tested Let's Golf 2 on all these roms, and on CM7 it was almost unplayable. FPS was good, but there were many lags and I couldn't properly hit the ball. And there is no Sense camera and dialer and weak FB integration. So far - CM7 not for me.
Now I use InsertCoin 2.5.5-2 + bricked kernel and it's perfect. Battery life is very good, all games works perfect, no lags in Let's Golf 2, 3d issue games (f.e. Cordy, Roboto), also work great with no issues. Everything is very smooth and I'm not going to change it for a long time (maybe for ICS if it will be on Sensations).
Point blank coredroid or rcmix3.5 both are different than all these roms good battery and everything to me if you want cm7 just go buy a nexus s the new one all stock android and faster than cm7
all of them...
Tried ARHD and for a sense rom it was nearly flawless except for the battery life (i'd carry a second battery to get thru a day). Then I tried InsertCoin and it was everything i wanted it to be. Super speedy, rock solid and had all of the extras i would usually add in anyway like the advanced power menu and quick settings. But alas it was a sense rom and I wanted to unleash the horsepower my HTC Sensation is packing, so I tried the CM7 ALPHA and i knew i was home. There isn't even a nightly build out yet for my phone and i cannot see any reason i would ever switch to another! even in alpha it is fast, stable, powerful, theme-able, and my daily driver! I say try a few before you choose because if you dont likke it... just flash another. Happy Flashing.
Thanks to kmobs for the selfKANGs!!
CM7 + Tiamat + GO Launcher EX
Came from the Nexus One, which I lost . I was running CM7, with Tiamat kernel, and GO launcher EX. I tried several Sense ROMs and several nonsense ROMs. Ending up going back to my Nexus setup. Plenty fast, all the features I want, battery life so far has been excellent. I don't like Sense.
nrvnqsrxk,
I understand that simplicity and usefulness are conflicting and confusing for some people so let me clarify it a bit more,
by simplicity I meant: user friendly-ness
by usefulness I meant: handy, basically on the opposite spectrum of simplicity
Each ROM could be clarified as either simple or more useful
For example, CM7 is useful but Sense is simpler, respectively of course
Does that help?
Also, since you accused me of not contributing, although I spent the time writing the thread and splitting it into categories, I will say this about the kernels, the faux kernel in my opinion is not very good on battery life but the bricked kernel is, in my opinion, stupendously fast when scrolling through the Sense homescreens and also good on battery life. With these opinions Sensation owners can then make their decision based on people's experience, therefore I do not need to frame the question you can if you would like and that is why it is called an open discussion.
dr.m0x how about battery life compared to android revolution HD 3.6.7 ?, the CM7 doesn't have sense i believe!!
lagging ? i never experienced lagging from neither stock neither the ARH
usefulness ? are you serious ? its an android, you can change it looks add launchers, customize it looks and all your daily apps will work on what so ever rom
it is YOU who make it useful
Insert Coin no other choice. Been with it since the start
maff's SENSE STOCK OPTIMIZED ROM is BETTER than ARHD in Battery LIFE and SNAPPY AS HELL. ALMOST LIKE CM7 no DELAY. Makes my friends Razor look like made in china i swear (the software atleast)
CM7 is the best rom in terms of my preferences.
CM9 (ICS) is just around the corner too.

No doubt about it specially since the new version 1.0

[Q] Best Rom to use/ Phone freezes sometimes.

Just need to know which rom would be the best to install. I use the stock rooted rom.
My Phone Sometime frezzes and I have to take out the battery to reboot it. (rom issue)
thanks in advance for the help and info.
Honestly I'm using Weapon 2.8 with the stock kernel and I've experienced no hiccups at all. Great battery life, and very good performance. No complaints!
To be honest with my opinion I wouldn't root this phone at all cause its running too many things and when you put roms on it it has tweaks and some mess up the phone and the radio sometimes can be good and bad but that's on you on what you decide their is no better our stable rom fully they all are haven issues of their own.. I am just sticking with the way the phone came in and I got a 2.3 gingerbread update one they finally got a update froyo blowed
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I'm also using Weapon 2.8 and it's the only stable ROM I've tried (Eagle's Blood and Trigger both had the wifi issue, among other things). I wish Weapon had more tweaks to play with, like some more CM7 style stuff, but I'm sure the dev is working hard enough as is. I'm much happier now than I was with stock
Every couple of days I go ahead and reboot, just to help clear up the lag, but that is much better than stock: battery pulls every day due to black screen of death.
G2x running Weapon ROM and Zeam Launcher with gestures. Tasker automation utilized for smart improvements.
+1 for Weapon. I went from stock to CM7 nightlies but experienced too many apn/wifi issues so switched to Weapon. Loving it so far - stable and everything works (at least everything I've tried/need).
I hear that the new CM7 release is good and stable but do not feel the need to switch anymore.

[Q] Is it worth flashing to CM7?

I got my HTC Desire S yesterday and updated it to the latest stock ROM OTA.

Only you can answer that question as snappy is one of those perception issues like battery life. As the previous poster suggested, do a nandroid backup of your current stock ROM setup and start flashing. If you don't like it restore your nandroid backup and you will be back in business.
When I switched from stock rom to cm7 a few months ago, I thought I had a new phone considering the speed advantage I noticed. To me a very important feature of cm7 is the control of application rights. E.g. if you don't like a torch-app to access your personal data you can search an alternative torch app or you can just deny the app the permission you don't want to give (and hope the app will still work).
Battery life improved greatly going from sense to CM7 for me. Overall the experience was much smoother. I felt like I had a new phone again.
Hi guys, I don't like HTC Sense and I wanted better battery life. I have now CM7, but my battery life is not better. I have CyanogenMOD 7.1 (stable version).

Check for some apps that can drain battery.
With the same version installed and only some Gapps from the package, with Tiamat kernel /smartassv2 governor at max ~900 MHz I had up to 5 days running time between charges.

Apps that can drain battery are those that all the time are trying to access a network, or GPS service or syncing etc.
Hell yes!
I love CM7! I like AOSP. I have been using Sense since I got the phone, but now decided to give CM ago..

However, I miss some sense features.

I think if you are happy with your ROM, why change it? You can change it in the future anyway, if you realize, that stock ROM is not good enough any more.
In my case, I also tried CM7 and I do not like it. Do not take me wrong, I believe it is a very good ROM, but I just cannot be without HTC Sense, that's all. So my last stock ROM was 2.3.5 and after long research for custom ROMs, I found one, Endymion. It is great ROM and with Sense 3.5.
The only reason for another one in the future is this one is not going to be with ICS.
The great thing about Sense imo is that it is an all-in one package. For example the weather widget, calendar widget and many more. Whereas CM7 is more customizable to your liking, but with increased performance and better battery life.

Reverted back to GB

Thought id share, just gone back to GB from ICS 4.0.3 unroll HTC push the stable ota out and I must say, sooooo much better battery, speed and performance. I missed my phone being this fast lol

What ICS were you using and what GB are you on? If anything I personally found that ICS was a bit faster and better battery.
Went from insert coin to mikes android rev. I found ics so laggy and battery wasn't lasting 16 hours with same usuage. I am getting bored of the selection of sensations Roms they are mostly all same sense roms or new roms that all have bugs and things not working. Miui for example camera still don't work (recording). Bluetooth or camera on cm9 due to kernel and so on just seems theres always something to prevent a fully working pyramid rom So to gett all things I need working I'm stuck with a sense Rom
Going to switch to a new phone but not sure what to get Any suggestions?;

Bluetooth or camera on cm9 due to kernel and so on just seems theres always something to prevent a fully working pyramid rom So to gett all things I need working I'm stuck with a sense Rom
Going to switch to a new phone but not sure what to get Any suggestions?;

thats your problem.. all the sense based roms are bloated and slow (insertcoin and ARHD)... try virtuous inquisition... it gets me better battery life and performance than ANY GB rom and ANY sense based ICS rom

Have you looked at upgrading your batter? I just got the Anker one and the difference is significant.
im on the blitz 5 ics rom and its far better than virtuous, in terms of battery life and stability.
Strange, I find InsertCoin ICS to be faster and have better battery life than GB.
It must be my battery then lol

I have tried several of the ICS flavors from different ROM builders.
I keep coming back to ARDH 3.6.x.
I gotta have WiFi calling stability and the call quality when outside is bad (Lack of noise cancellation).
I too, had worse battery life on any of the ICS builds. However, performance, as measured by seat of the pants and benchmarks...was better.
I'm very appreciative of the Dev work on these...don't get me wrong.
I've found I like Sense 3.5 or 3.6 more than ICS at this point in time...the widgets and folder/app organization is superior to 3.0.
Can't wait for an OEM release so these devs can really nail it.
I installed an insertcoin rom but not glad to install 4.0.3. Colors seem to be sober.. I don't know why but i'm pretty sure that there's a problem with the colors. I saw a topic about it and i think it had a patch to fix it. But i can't find it.. Anyone knows? If no, i will go back to gingerbread, too until the official sensation ics release comes =(

+1. No lag at all and battery is best I've had since getting the phone. Only downside for me is waiting for apps to be updated for Ics.

Ics is definitely faster than gingerbread. Needed to run cm7 to feel like I was actually using a dual core phone, but sense ics feels much faster than gb sense. Fast enough that I can tolerate sense now. Battery life hasn't been that exciting on ics for me though. It seems about the same maybe a bit worse but then I haven't bothered to calibrate the battery yet.
All in all, I won't ever go back to gingerbread.

i have just installed insert coin ics 2 days ago and very much happy with the smoothness, stability, and speed of it. not really a rom addict but i tried only two other roms before and stayed loyal on each of them. but i think i have my new rom now and will definitely stay with baadnewz rom. battery have never been an issue of mine since its always usb plugged.
in comparison with gingerbread, there really is no contest.
Ran LeeDroid, ARHD, and AndroidME ICS roms, and so far liking the AndroidME the most. May try InsertCoin next week and see what the hype is about.
ICS is already faster than GB with the stock kernel, and I can imagine it only getting faster once kernel devs improve their work. This is coming from someone running Pyramid3D 12 hours prior @ 1.512g overclocking kernel.

I've tried CM7, ARHD 3.6 (GB), 5.2, 6.0 and 6.2 (ICS), so my experience is somewhat limited.
But I've noticed that ICS is faster than GB right after superwiping and flashing the ROM. As time passes it gets slower and slower. Shutting down and restarting helps a bit, but the performance never fully improves. This is just the feel of the phone, menu lags, scrolling stuttering, etc.
In comparison GB is slower, but more consistent. The way it feels right after a new flash is the same way it feels after 1-2 weeks uptime. And it has fewer bugs, like the green Skype video.
still baking
I was flashing a dozen similar Sense 3.6 roms and then realized I had a problem. No consistency, flashing addict. I even considered un-rooting to rehab myself. I really liked Virtuous Quattro Alpha 3 and TripNRaver's CM9 but not having Bluetooth and video recording was a deal breaker.
Two months ago, I was having issues with Gingerbread and my device freezing. But after learning about firmwares, I think I made my device even more reliable than stock. I went back to Sense-o-maniac v1.5.3 with the Amaze camera. For me, this rom has almost everything I need from Android: Amazing camera, CRT animations, screen shots, and a working Hulu+ app.
Sense is okay but I love the improvements of Android 4.0. The new lock screen, new menus, calendar, and the keyboard works great. Hopefully by March, some of these great devs will have perfected CM9.
pro setup includes. Virtuous inquisition ics 4.0.3 on the sensation is fantastic. Quite possibly the best phone/rom combo ive used. 30+ hrs battery. Its fast. Everything works. Cant ask for more at this point. U should try virtuous inquisition before deciding to stick with gingerbread. I was reluctant to take the plunge up to ics but glad i did. This is coming from someone who is extremely picky with their device and how well it works.
