Hi all,
Rumor has it I picked up a DEFY last week. Most people in the community know me for my work on the cliq/backflip/cliqxt. It's been quite some time since I posted any mods/work here on XDA so here we go. First I'd like to say thanks to Koush & Tenfar for the work they've done. They laid the ground work. I simply needed/wanted to improve on it more. I wanted to include the latest 2.5.1.x version since it has some bug fixes/new features also. So here you go. This recovery includes the latest 2.5.1.8 ClockworkMod Recovery, fixed fix_permssions script, and updated adb that allows root access when using adb shell. All your backups, downloads will reside in the clockworkmod directory on your sdcard just like a standard clockworkmod recovery. If you haven't noticed the fix_permissions script don't run properly via the recovery on the DroidX/Droid2/Defy. I simply fixed the script so it does work properly. Thanks again to both Koush & Tenfar. I'm looking into resolving the problem when you have USB debugging enabled you can't boot into recovery mode properly. This release still has that issue, just FYI. If you choose to use this version over Tenfar's, you'll need to un-install his version, install this one, & choose the option to install recovery once. After that, it's works the same way. Take care.
UPDATE: I've uploaded a new version to my 4shared as well as included it here. This new version simply adds a power off option to the menu & was a quick attempt to try to resolve the USB debugging option. I'll give it another try when I have time, until then, I hope you like having the option to power off your Defy from the recovery menu. I've also provided a link to the original version. Take care.
Steve, kb7sqi
Edit: Due to requests, I'm re-adding the link for this updated version. While I do have plans to come back to #android soon, until then, this will be unsupported by me till then. I'm glad it's been useful to others. Take care.

It's does exactly what it sounds like. It simply returns the "key" value when you touch keys/buttons on your phone. It's handy if you're wanting to update a recovery to use certain keys if your phone has them. Perfect example, on the cliqxt the phone has a touch pad. So in the version I created for it, instead of needing to use the volume up/down, you could also use the touchpad for up/down/select as well. Take care.

Hey guys,
I've coded a tiny app to reboot your Optimus 2x or G2x into recovery mode without holding any buttons. Best thing is... it's free ;-) It doesn't install Clockworkmod, so if you want an app for that, check out Paul's paid app for that (Which does it on the O2x only)
I'd be really happy if you'd tap the ad displayed in the application, but you don't need to.
Yes, the app is ugly, fugly, disturbing, etc. but hey, it works :-D
It's to be found in the Android Market here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.m...sma.lgo2xreboot, on AndroidPIT.com http://www.androidpit.com/en/android/marke...recovery-reboot and in the attachment of course!
Update: Implented a check if the app is runnning on an LG Optimus 2x or G2x.
Update #2: Made the app less fugly, thanks to fitsnugly.
Update #3: SU660 compatibility
I also attached the source code, if you're interested.
APK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=575213&stc=1&d=1303472096

I think you need to update the description coz right now it includes the message below.
!!! WARNING: DO NOT USE THIS ON YOUR T-MOBILE G2x !!!
You can ignore the warning about the G2x, the guy I asked to upload the app to his Market account needs to remove that warning
Thanks for the app...

Nice job dude
Works great with respect to its purpose. I had trouble with manually going into recovery. After opening it (no problem), if I let the keys go - it turned off - period.
I had to keep holding the power button and take one action with either power up or down button, and then I can let go. With this app - go straight to recovery.
Sorry - did not see an add to click on - maybe because I have ad blocker - lol.
Would the quick boot app not do the same thing?

this app only works if using the nvflash CWM.
If you only have CWM by flashing it through RM, this app will boot you into 3e recovery, where you can only go up and down, power will not select anything, thus having to battery pull.

Rom Manager has the option to reboot to recovery on CWN that was flashed from Rom Manager, tried it this morning and it works fine. Can navigate the recovery and do what you need to do.
Not sure if this is the proper section for this but thought I would post this here as I'm sure it would highly assist people in development and other tasks. This is the button combinations you need to enter each mode.
ODIN/Download Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key Combos: Volume Down + Home
While holding both of them simultaneously press the Power button until you see a disclaimer on the screen
Then let go of all the buttons and press Volume Up to accept the disclaimer
Once the green robot is visible on the screen this indicates that handset is in now ODIN/Download mode
Recovery Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key Combos: Volume Up + Home
While holding both of them simultaneously press the Power button
As soon as the phone vibrates, let go of the Power button but keep holding Volume Up + Home
When you see the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo (not just the word "Samsung"), right after that, the next screen you should see is your recovery
Don't let go of Volume Up + Home until you see your recovery
Updated OP to correct that Samsung devices do not have a "Fastboot" mode. ODIN mode replaces this and the ODIN software is basically a set of fastboot commands which is the only way to communicate to the device on a low level. Just a little FYI for everyone.
Heimdall should also work ,and it's cross-platform, unlike Odin. But somebody with a phone should test it to make sure it does.

Thanks for this handy information.
Since I am not at all familiar with Odin and how it works, could you ad a description of the steps to take in order to use Odin to flash an image file to the Galaxy S III? I watched a video on rooting, but the author never really showed much of the Odin screen on his PC and didn't say anything at all about how to use it. So far I keep reading to "use the PDA button", and I have the files downloaded and ready to go, but I don't want to make any mistakes.

I've seen some posts where folks had Odin still chewing on the process after 45 minutes. What do you recommend one do in that instance?

In 99% of cases such as that it is likely the fault of a bad USB cable or the computer itself. First try another cable, if still the same try to get access to something like a laptop and try there, usually USB ports work fine on laptops.

Thanks. Luckily, I did not have this issue, and your thread here allowed me to root easily on the first try (I did use the OEM USB cable, having read that sometimes prevented problems for others). So thanks a lot for this thread. I am one of a presumed many who came here as this thread was spawned from a divergence on a previous root thread. Glad I did.
I did have an issue with Rom Manager while trying to flash CWM Recovery. It hung on the first attempt and I had to reboot the phone, but then it worked the second time. The only remaining anomaly I have here is that the nandroid I made is dated 1970. I'd like to know if others are having the same issue, and await some announcement for a fix. Does CWM Recovery actually have a support site? If so I'll post there about it.

Happy to help.
And the date bug is a known problem with both CWM and TWRP recovery so far so don't worry too much for now and it won't affect it's use, just an annoyance. No ETA on a fix just yet but check in ROM Manager for an updated version possibly.

What I would actually like to see is CWM offering to let us name the nandroid when creating it, as well as where to put it. From what I have read this date issue is long standing, yet I have never encountered it before using rooted Android devices for the past 2 years until just now. I wonder if it is just this phone model causing the issue?
Does the battery need to be pulled for Odin to be accessed?
How about updating the OP to mention that you must be powered off before pressing the key combinations to enter ODIN mode. Would have saved me a lot of time.

Sadly, the date issue in CWM Touch Recovery has still not been corrected. I rename them after I make one ( but make sure not to put any spaces in the file name or it won't pass the MD5 check when using it later).

I was curious as to why backups I'd named were failing seemingly at random. Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if this applies to renaming a backup and is therefore correctable by doing so with no spaces in the new name?

Unzip the zip file downloaded from Asus site, the final file name should be "US_epad-user-10.4.4.16.zip", copy this file to the root of your micro sdcard. turn off your device, Insert the sdcard back into your device, boot into recovery, by default RCK should be highlighted, just hit the volume up button to execute the upgrade. If you have a red android, try to rename the file to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip" and try again. One thing that really bugged me is that wipe data (factory reset) did not work as normal, but ignore this for now.

This one?
I knew this day would come, I've traded PC trouble shooting for tablet troubleshooting. My son's tf300 gets to the screen where circles/dots go round and round and never gets any further. I am trying to learn everything I can and try everything I can before doing the wipe and starting over...as he has pictures and videos he'd like to save, and of course the all important saved game/app data...LOL. Anyway I'm new to tablets relatively speaking, but I've tried the volume down, and power button for doing a cold boot, same result. I've tried going to the recovery option just to see what that was about, and all I get is a flash of a screen saying something like updating android version or something like that and then the dead android with the usual red triangle and eventually the device will restart itself. I should that to him and told him he killed the android which gave me a puzzled look and then a smile...Anyway, you can't turn off the device nohow noway, except letting the battery drain completely.
I've been reading a little and learning about roots, backups, recoveries, etc... trying to come up with a plan of attack but feel like I'm spinning my wheels. Any advice here? and Can I access via PC to USB to device and just pull off his pics and videos to copy back over to the device after a wipe?
Problem started...I think when he ran the power dead completely and then had to restart...nor sure though... memories of a child are sketchy at best.

I have a solution, but your not going to like it, all data will be lost....:crying:
1. Download the latest version of Android for your tablet. Make sure you download the correct SKU version.
A. To find the SKU, go into settings, About tablet, and look for your Build Number, There are two letters (such as US,WW, TW, etc.) that is your SKU. When downloading the zip from ASUS', you must download the correct SKU zip.
2. Decompress downloaded .zip file (it will be another .zip)
3. Rename it to:
A. For the TF700 and TF300: EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip
B. For the TF101: E101_SDUPDATE.zip
4. Make sure your MicroSD card is formatted Fat32. It must be Fat32 Format or it will not work.
5. Copy the file to (the root directory of) your MicroSD
6. Insert the MicroSD into the tablet
7. Shutdown (power off) the tablet
8. Power it on by pressing and holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons simultaneously
9. When you see white text in the top left corner of the screen, release the buttons ^^ and press VOLUME UP button (on RCK, this is your recovery which should already be selected) until you see Android logo and process bar
10. Give the update process 5-10 minutes. It should not take longer than that. If it happens to run for more than 45 minutes to an hour, force shut down the tablet and see if it boots. If it does not, try rerunning steps 7-9.
Let me know if you need any help along the way.... Thx as always lj

So the RCK thing doesn't do anything unless you have SD card in to do something that's on the card?
And there's no way to access what's on the device without getting it booted all the way?
Sounds like your saving me and my son from updating from his original Android version after a wipe...Thanks

Yes the tablet having a locked bootloader... You can only flash signed zip files...From the SDcard
When your on that screen with the RCK.. NEVER select the WIPE DATA.. Bad things will happen...
Also when your in the RCK screen.. That is called the bootloader screen....So you know if some one refers to it by its name.....
Also that is were you can find your SKU on the bootloader screen upper left in white letters... WW, US, TW ............... Make sure you get the right SKU from asus for your 300....

As far as I know it's related only to custom recovery and if You have stock one it should work. Or I'm wrong?

Out of curiousity...Isn't doing these steps more or less just upgrading the firmware? Like getting an update from ASUS? If so, why will it lose all the data?
I haven't mustered up the courage yet to do this yet... actually it's more like getting the time to do it.

You could try using ADB to try and pull your files. I faced a similar problem and was able to pull some of my files:

Sent from my R800i using xda-developers app.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Apologies, I'm very rusty with this stuff now. If flashing a .blob file doesn't wipe data (I can't remember whether it does or not), perhaps you could try doing that if you're able to get into recovery?

Just wanted to follow up on this...lj50036 is top noctch helper here. going above and beyond does not even come close to explaining what he has tried to do for me. Ultimately it was after we hit a brick wall, that I suggested flashing back to an earlier version that finally worked. I'm not convinced flashing to the latest version (like I first tried) would not work, as I didn't personally create/rename the SD card to do the flash. but re-flashing the original firmware got the tablet to boot finally. Of course all was lost other than what had been automatically backed up via google servers. Pictures/videos back to exactly one year from when the pad stopped booting were recovered. Everything before a year was gone. No game data or installs were saved. I thought maybe it had to do with a space issue, but after re-installing every app my son had before and about 1GB worth of pics/videos restored, there is still 16GB left, I doubt game/user data would have consumed that much...so I still have no idea what might have cause the pad to stop booting. Other than it was trying to do something important when he ran the battery dead. So at this point I'm having my son clean out unwanted apps, and we are going to unlock and root after a proper backup is done. Thank you to all that have had input on my dilemma. I've learned a ton.

To all: Make sure that you do a clean flash when coming to this Rom and to make sure you flash the boot.img that comes with it. You should show 172 apps on boot or so. If not, make sure to reflash. For theme stuff: If you guys have any requests, I'm open to adding in unique color choices!

Restart your phone. As soon as the HTC Blue Logo disappears, hold volume-down and the power button at the same time and don't let go I Tim your phone reboots into hboot.
Another method is to hook your phone up to your computer that has adb. Open a command prompt in the folder you have adb and type: adb reboot recovery
That will send you into recovery.

Sounds like you have a update file on your external sdcard and the boot loader is reading it. If you try entering recovery this way, eject your sdcard until you get a chance to rename that file to something else then try this method again. Otherwise, use the adb method for going into recovery.

Where can I get the LP Google play services apk so that I can push it to system apps and then flash the rom to test? Haven't seen anyone post it or where to get it.

I noticed that when device is inactive for a long period wifi disconnects and the only way to get it back is to restart. Can't give a exact amount of time, has happened overnight and when I wake I have to restart to get wifi back....it says wifi is on but just keeps scanning. I also just had WiFi completely Crap out for no reason, was not inactive.
Just one question, is smart lock? not in the ROM? The one where if you have Bluetooth device no need to unlock the password
WiFi issue as well on sense roms
I love this ROM its my favorite but I also have this WiFi bug where if I have the fphone
sitting screen off idle the WiFi disconnect and it no longer scans and
I have to toggle it off and on and it takes a really long time to toggle. anyone
else experiencing this or found a solution. I've only seen this on Roms with
sense integrated.

The problem is due to firmware not being up to date and is usually resolved by updating to the latest available firmware.
