I just had a question on whether anyone knows any ROM devs that either keep as close to stock "vanilla" android, or if anyone knows the least amount of things that have to be coded to create a "vanilla" ROM.
I don't know if I am the only person who would like just straight up google android 2.3 to rn with their non-modded UI, but that is honestly what I'd like.
If I have to I will create my own as long as I know the super basic things I have to change to get it to run.
I had a G1 with CyanogenMod on it and while I enjoyed CM, I have no idea if they even plan to make a version of CM 7 for the shift.

First off, allow me to introduce myself: I'm an 18 year old cook from new orleans and I'm fairly tech savvy. I have an ipod touch and enjoyed hacking the **** out of it, and now I have a G1 and look forward to hacking the hell out of it as well, espcially since android is much more hack friendly and so far I absolutely love it compared to the iphone os.
Ok, so I just downloaded sign-passion-frf50-from-ere27.1e519a24.zip
From what I understand this is Froyo (2.2), which cannot(?) run on the G1.
Can I get this to run on the G1? If not, can I get 2.1 to run on the G1?
If it is possible, but very difficult, please let me know anyway so at least I know what I'm up against.
On this note, what is the process of manually updating the android os anyway?
P.S. I did search before posting this, and nothing seemed to spefically match this post

Even if all Android systems have the same roots, they differs on various devices. This is caused by different hardware specs: CPU architecture, drivers, customizations; and there are some custom add-ons as well: Google apps, Sense UI, etc. This is why it isn't possible to run OS designated for other devices, even if both of them are running "the same" system.
Porting is a process of mixing up bits from both systems to get some features from one device to another. And adding some missing parts. We have to wait for someone to manage to build workable version of Froyo system for G1 devices.
Ahh and there is no problem with 2.1 on G1 - there are plenty of 2.1 roms for this device, I personally recommend CM5.0.7 .
I see. So do you think that froyo will be ported to the g1? Where can I download the roms for the g1? and how do I install them? Is there a way to get sense ui on the g1 after I install CM5.0.7? Thanks for all the help
Well first you will need to root your phone. There is tons of information on that. I'm sure you'll find a guide no problem. Is you want cm5, which I highly recommend as well, go to cyanogenmod.com and look in the forums under experimental. You cannot, however, simply add sense to a rom. It's a lot more complicated than that. There are lots of sense roms though. Check the g1 forum here on xda. As for froyo, time will be popping up soon enough but we're all going to have to wait until the source is released sometime in the next week or two.
Hope that helps,

How would I go about porting a gingerbread build from say, the nexus one to my droid pro? Like, what variables from the nexus one's build would need to be changed in order to get it running on my phone in the form of an update.zip? So far I've gathered the framework needs to be modified to work with my phone but what else? I'm pretty linux savvy and have enough free time coming up to be able to get something working.
Before you read this and blast me for being impatient I want you to know that this is purely a question and I am truly grateful for all the developers we have working on the Charge Development.
Being that this is my first smartphone, I don't really know how long development takes and how much work goes into it. So my question is, how long before we see a Gingerbread ROM? Do the developers have to wait until a test build is leaked for the phone from Samsung or is development probably going on right now?
What about a Google Stock Froyo experience (you know without Touchwiz or Launcher Pro or anything like that)? I've heard a lot of people who like the Google experience better than anything else so I'm just wondering if that is in the works?
Once again I'm not trying to get on anyone's back I'm just purely wondering if these things are in development or if we will ever see these on the Charge.
Thanks
For most devices, especially CDMA, going from the ROM that shipped with the phone to a working AOSP ROM (Google Experience if you will) takes several months. With Samsung phones, it takes longer from what I've seen. The biggest problem that anyone trying to do this will encounter is the dual-RIL (needed for cell radios), and could be what prevents a full AOSP ROM from ever happening. A lot of people would love AOSP, but it is much easier said than done.
Hi,
I'm relatively new to the whole Android business, coming from the Blackstone running Windows Mobile 6.1, where I did some ROM cooking. So probably I don't have that much of an overview yet.
After looking around in the Android development section for this device, I realized that most (all?) ROMs are based upon the HTC stock ROMs.
However I was wondering whether there are ROMs (or projects) with the goal of bringing the stock Android sources to our devices. I'm not that much of a fan of all these modifications the OEMs are including and would like to have as much of a vanilla Android as possible. As seen with the vulnerability of htclogger, this is a justified request as all added (unneeded) stuff is just another weak point.
I'm pretty sure that the vanilla sources won't be enough to get our devices running and there are a bunch of drivers, which must be added to get (full) functionality.
The ultimate goal would be to get some sort of scripts, which would automatically grab the latest Android sources, add the necessary stuff, which is needed to get full support for our devices, and build a ROM, which then could be the base for custom ROMs using the available tools/kitchens.
So, basically, before starting something, which already exists (but I couldn't find), I would like to ask you if you know of something that suits my taste in any sense? Or am I the only one interested in this way of thinking? Is there anyone who would like to participate in this endeavor when there shouldn't be something similar already?
Thanks in advance for any helpful reference in the right direction.
Best regards,
johnpatcher
There are a lot of roms with no-sense options and you have miui and cm7

Yeah, but all ROMs I've seen so far are based upon the stock ROMs and removed some of the included HTC stuff. There even seem to be some scripts, which would do just that after flashing such a ROM. I would like to go the bottom-up kind of approach.
As great as MIUI and CM7 are, both of them don't support the Sensation officially yet. Furthermore they try to be an alternative firmware/ROM and add a whole bunch of functionality for themselves.
Without looking into their building process, I could imagine that they are using the Android vanilla sources as a base, which would be the kind of thing I want, although I would have to investigate that further. Does anyone know something about this?
CM7 does officially support the Sensation, albeit in Alpha form.
What you want is someone to compile a ROM from source (AOSP) specifically for the Sensation but it would seem no one has taken up the challenge yet. Surprising really, there were 2-3 on the Desire
Hi to everyone reading this
I am a fairly long time user of xda, usually just lurking and watching threads as they go along, but have now decided to try my hand at developing a rom or two for our (unfortunately) long forgotten villec2, since everyone seems to develop for the S4 variant. I have seen android 5 ported to the S4 variant, and I would like to know if what I am trying to do is at all possible, and if it is, if anyone can point me in a starting direction.
What I am trying to accomplish, is to get a working (bootable, not much else) rom that can boot up on my phone, and then from there add drivers/modules (unsure about naming conventions used in android, coming from a java/C++ background) for the different phone functions as I learn more about the system. So far, I have not found much on upgrading device trees / vendor files (not even exactly sure what these are for since most I see are completely different, even for the same version of android) from 4.4 to 5.0.1, and if I should simply write many of these files from scratch. I know this is a huge en devour, and I am in for much frustration, but I am doing it for two main reasons. One, everyone seems to have forgotten the villec2 device, and I feel like I will still be using it for quite a long time, and being able to use the latest and greatest in android technology will be quite nice to say the least. And two, I am doing it for learning, broadening my own experience with android, since I have yet to really write my own rom, I have only done a few rough builds from other people's repositories like cm.
At this point, I have a AOSP build environment from the master branch, have not yet done a build from it, and would just like any nudge someone can give me in a starting direction. Would it be possible to obtain some of the files I need for android L from my current device,, which is running a android 4 variant? Should I look elsewhere for these files?

I know it's not for C2 but maybe you can find some info there or someone can give you some advice
Sent from nowhere over the air...
I have checked out the thread, but unfortunately most of these guides refer to an already made vendor/device tree, which does not yet exist for the c2 (for android 5 anyways). Ill likely need to write my own it seems. Sadness..
