[Q] **Stuck** Can anyone help with this problem? - Captivate General

I was running Paragon4 about a week or so, saw the update and then flashed
Paragon5 over it. The flash was successful, but I decided a few hours later
to just start over clean. So, I did the usual: flashed back to stock
(I897UCJF6) using Odin3 One-click Downloader, rooted using Galaxy S One-click
Root, downloaded ROM Manager from Market, installed it, and copied paragon-
rc5beta18.zip to /sdcard. All seemed ok up to this point, but then it got
weird when something that never happened before...happened . Here's the steps I took:
1) installed ROM Manager
2) selected Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
3) selected Galaxy S Captivate
4) "An error occured while downloading your recovery"
5) selected Galaxy S i9000
6) "Successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery"
selected Install ROM from SD Card
7) Chose ROM
8) Checked Wipe Data & Cache
9) Rebooted into Recovery
10) Selected Reinstall packetage
11) "E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted"
12) Selected Reboot System Now
After going over the above several times, here's some of the other things
I've tried:
* deleted the update.zip file in /sdcard and manually transfered an old copy
of update.zip I had kept and tried reinstall packetage... nothing
* went thru process without sim and external sd in device...nothing
* reformated internal sd...nothing
* tried to restore a recently made nandroid backup thru cwm...nothing
* searched forum post after post for somthing similar to my
situation...nothing
* gave cappy my best pouty face...nothing
That's all I have. If anyone has any idea about what's going on, I'd really
appreciate the help. Thx.

Question
After you flashed back to stock and rebooted your phone did you do a master clear with Odin3 ?

Yeah, a number of times. Wanted to eliminate any random glitches that might happen.

Hang loose, looking

Try This
Try this:
Remove external sd.
Leave sim in
Flash back to stock
After Boot
Enable usb
Start Odin3
Connect phone to computer
Do Odin3 master clear
Remove phone from computer after phone boots
You should be good from here, back to stock
Find fresh copy of update.zip
ROOT your phone
You know the rest
lol

Just put a clockwork .zip on your phone and do it manually. I think the servers that host clockwork download are having problems

P.S... also....I heared about "gapps"...what is it and do I need it at all? When is the official 2.3.x (gingerbread) coming from Tmobile? I just want GB on my g2x
make sure u flashed clockwork recovery via NVflasher to TRULY gain a mod recovery. I always put the roms I wanna flash onto my phone's memory and NOT the microSD card. maybe that'll help.
Looks like a corrupt download. Delete the zip and try downloading again.

Thnx for the reply. I tought I heard to have the ROMS in external memory card. Cuz, for example that's where clockworkmod backs up your nandroid.
Where do you place the ROMS(most roms have like 3 files in a compressed zip format.......i.e example.....the eagleblood ROM name is EagleBlood1.04.zip when u download it....inside the zip, theres two folders.....META-INF and "system".....a file called "boot.img" and another one called "installbusybox"...so where in the internal phone memory do u put the whole zip folder......?
put the WHOLE rom.zip on your memory. don't unzip anything.
+1 on the post above. redownload the rom and try flashing again.
after you flash the rom, flash gapps (this is the installer that includes market, gmail, etc.) You need it in order to get access to the market
Your steps should be as follows
1. Wipe Data
2. Wipe Dalvik cache
3. Flash Rom
4. Flash gapps
5. fix permissions
6. reboot
EDIT: and don't unzip anything. Place the WHOLE eaglesblood.zip file on your SD Card

They all say the same....I got them from the cyanogenmod website......even Eagleblood1.04 from here.
funny thing i noticed tho, after I tried installing a rom, but of course it fails, I connect the phone to USB, go to external memory card, try to open the ROM zip file, it wont open....says "X:\EagleBlood1.04.zip The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"
Maybe it gets damaged or currupted during the time its trying to flash the files to the phone???

[Q] Installing Bionix Frost on SGS4g

I have been trying to install the Bionix Frost SGS4G rom from team whiskey, but I am having a lot of trouble doing so. I downloaded the file posted in the original thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119986), downloaded Rom Manager through my phone, then CWM through ROM Manager. I attempted to install the .zip file from the SD through ROM manager. Everytime I click the button to install from my SD card, I choose the folder and then my phone restarts and hangs on the "Galaxy S" startup screen. After about a minute, it starts up normally. I know I must be doing something wrong, so would it be possible for someone to walk me through installing this ROM (in somewhat detail)? Thank you in advanced!
I don't know specifically what's going on, but I just installed it on an otherwise stock+rooted T-Mobile SGS4G and it worked splendidly. Did you follow their steps exactly (emptying the cache and all that, and mounting /system)?
Thanks for the quick response. I never get the options to mount/clear because once I choose the .zip file, the phone restarts. I also have rooted, but otherwise stock. I haven't done much with it. Did you just put the zip file on your sd card and run from rom manager? Im not sure if there are any steps prior to this that I am missing. Thanks.

Use Krylon's CWM to install rom, do not use Rom Manager for now.
Uninstall Rom Manager, go to CWM Final thread download files and follow instructions.
Hope it helps
Flashed it and running good. What themes can I do? I want a gb theme.

Ddang was right. I soft bricked twice because of rom manager.
Always use cwm from krylon's post.

I just boot into recovery. Then do it. I dont use rom manager but I have the cwm from it though.
more attempts
ok. i uninstalled ROM Manager. Then I went to the CWM Final Thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374) and downloaded the 2 files. I Used Root Explorer to overwrite my recovery file. Then I placed the update.zip file onto my SD Card. I just dragged and dropped into the SD card. It is not in a folder or anything and located in /sdcard on my phone. Then I redownloaded the Bionix Frost SGS4G rom and placed it in my /sdcard directory as well. I reboot my phone press the power button, along with both volume buttons to get into recovery. I get into the "Samsung Recovery Utils --for BML--, I see the options to reboot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache. But before I do this, I want to be sure I am on the right track. This is the recovery screen that everyone uses right? I do not see anywhere that it says ClockworkMod. If it is, I know I will have to choose "delete all user data", followed by "delete cache data". But after this step, how do I get to the options to "Mount storage and mount /system"? Thank you for all of the help
Click on reinstall packages ... that will load update.zip and that's how u get into cwm

Wow. i got it to work. thank you all so much for all of the patience and guidance. this was my first time flashing a rom and it worked great. since i was complete noob, anyone who needs any help with starting from scratch, i can walk you through it step by step. team whiskey, expect a donation soon.

I'm not sure if you got your problem fixed because I haven't read all the way thru this thread. But I had similar problems from what you described when I installed Bionix Black Ice with voodoo lag fix. I found that when I flashed the rom things didn't work right. My fix, after making a backup of everything, do a data/factory reset, then delete the cache, then delete delvik cache, then flash your new rom. After that, reinstall your apps thru the back up you created and all is good. I am using CWM to flash with and My backup root to backup my apps, files and what nots... Hope this helps!
sea, thats great advice. also, if you guys get any force closes, go back into cwm and go to advanced and fix permissions.

[Q] Couple of questions concerning CWM and Backups

So I've read on different ways to boot into CWM then flash to the Krylon fix, but the way I (have) to do it is completely different; First, hit ROM manager then boot into recovery. From there, I cannot click the update from zip option - I get an error and it fails - instead, I go to mounts and storage. Instead of the regular options, my only option is Mount USB Storage. I click that and after some script that I never read, my phone freezes. After the holding the power button to restart, it boots me into the CWM fix that I need to be in in order to flash my ROMs. - Why does it do this?
Also, every time I flash a different ROM, I use a nandroid backup. Recently I almost restored data on an old backup I had from a month ago. How do I delete the old backups that I don't need?

to delete old backup you need to do it manually from the computer when your phone is mounted its in the folder clockworkmod/backups. or delete it from a file manager while on your phone. and what krylon fix are you trying to flash ? are you on stock ?
its the CWM3XX.zip file that I need to get to before flashing ROMs. I can get to it fine, its just that I use a different method of getting there than instructed in the dev threads. I'm running your gingerclone rom. and thanks for the backup advice.

what is the Method your using ?
said method above - flash to cwm, go to mounts ->mount USB (this is my only option) -> frozen screen -> restart ->and when i restart it boots to the krylon fix
That CWMxxx.zip should be update.zip, just checking to make sure you did that. try my updater script, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15831175&postcount=124
it will add the modded recovery binary and push krylon's good update.zip, and reboot you into recovery.

Rom manager Backup of stock rom

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I have rooted my infuse, I used the one click root method. I installed Ti backup and performed a backup of all my apps. I then downloaded Rom Manager latest version off the market. I told it to flash the galaxy i9000 information as thats what i had read was required. Now when I go to make a backup of my rom as it is, it restarts boots into recovery, all the top lettering is blue and says android system recovery, then it shows the options of reboot, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data, and format internal sd card.
below all this in yellow it shows a bunch of checksum confirmation, then not need cheksum confirmation, Mov1_check executed, update media finished, #MANUAL MODE#, appling multi-csc, installing multi csc, then it shows install defaul apk-files, please wait, then install default apk-files, finished.
at this point the phone just sits there and never reboots or anything. so i choose reboot the system and it does. I can find any backup of the rom on the external or internal sd card. I have both. did i do something wrong somewhere? am i missing the file in the structure somehow? thanks for all the help.
You have to update the recovery in order to use Clockwork. Right now you are in the stock recovery. Once you do it right you will see many more options and the CWM recovery screen (red letters). I am just a noob, so maybe someone more experienced can chime in here too. Here is a thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107881
Ok so basically I need to download that file, replace the recovery, then reinstall the package twice. Dies that sound right? Lol
Also, I really don't have Amy plans to install a. Custom rom, so a Ti backup would probably be enough anyway right??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
Yes you will know when you are in Red Clockwork recovery, it looks way different than the blue stock one. Install the update twice and you should see it.
I would just do a batch backup of your apps and data with Titanium. You don't need a Nandroid backup really unless you are flashing roms or kernels and something goes wrong.

[Q] (Q) Problems flashing ROM with ROM manager

OK please don't flame the noob for asking a question....
I'm trying to flash a new ROM onto my Infuse 4g. For some reason when I try to flash to a new ROM it either fails to load the new ROM or it doesn't seem to load anything. What am I doing wrong?
I rooted with superoneclick, I have backed up with titanium backup, and downloaded ROM manager. I've downloaded roms either on the XDA forums or right inside ROM manager. When I pick a phone in ROM manager I pick Galaxy S i9000,
I am currently flashed to ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2, If I try to flash to another clockworkmod it says "an error occurred while downloading your recovery".
I have tried a couple different ways.
I also tried to place the new rom file in the internal SD card and used the update method. When I try that it start to install the new file then fails about 30% in with an error.
What am I doing wrong?
which rom are you trying to flash?
Need to know that before steps can be given.
Galaxys i9000 is the correct clockworkmod.
Sounds more like ROM manager is just having server issues...

I have tried to flash to a couple different roms.
infusionGB-1.1 from here, I tried MIUI and darkyROM from Rom manager.
When I tried the update.zip method it said "Failed to read whole file".
Truthfully I figure I'm a noob and I overlook something stupid. Also I'm not picky as to what I flash to, I'm just trying to learn to flash period.

Have you tried installing Infused 2.2.3 ? It's based on the Gingerbread from the Rogers Infuse.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220088
Follow each step:
1) You must be rooted.
2) If you have a /Voodoo folder on your internal SD card, delete it and reboot.
3) If you're already running a custom ROM with Voodoo lagfix FULLY enabled, you can skip to step 7.
4) Download ( CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip if you're on Froyo ) or ( CWM-infused-v2.0.1-kernel.zip if you're on Gingerbread ) and place it on your internal SD card.
5) Install SGS Kernel Flasher from the Market.
6) Open SGS Kernel Flasher, select choose kernel, select the file you downloaded, and select flash kernel. Your phone will reboot and begin to enable Voodoo lagfix. Let it do that and boot all the way up. It will take a while (5-10 minutes) because it's converting all partitions to ext4.
7) If you're on Froyo, you must now install a file explorer like Root Explorer from the Market and use it to delete the file /system/bin/recovery. You will need to hit the "Mount R/W" button in Root Explorer before it will let you delete it. I can't stress this enough... you MUST MUST MUST delete that file before continuing or else you will get boot loops!
8) Now install ROM Manager from the Market and open it.
9) Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and choose "Galaxy S i9000".
10) Now go to "Download ROM", select my section (gtg465x), select the latest Infused V2 release, and hit the download button.
11) At the "Installation Type" prompt, select full.
12) Select the addons you wish to install and then wait for ROM Manager to download the ROM. There is a note at the bottom of this post about which addons are not compatible with each other.
13) When you get to the "ROM Pre-Installation" prompt, you MUST check "Wipe Data and Cache" unless you're coming from Infused V2 BETA 1.
14) Press OK. Your phone will reboot and automatically install the ROM. Just sit back and relax.
15) Do NOT restore system data with Titanium Backup. Do NOT restore ALL apps with data. If you absolutely must restore something with Titanium Backup, only restore MISSING apps with data.

First off the only rom straight out of rom manager you can flash is gtgs without helllraiser second when you download cwm witch 2.5 is right boot into recovery click re-install packages do this twice you should now have cwm recoverey then download the rom you would like following that ops directions and you should be fine
Holy MIUI Batman!
Thank you. It worked great!
Easier to just Odin/Heimdall a CWM-enabled kernel.
That way you never have to deal with "green" CWM.
BTW, once you have installed a custom ROM and enabled Voodoo Lagfix, NEVER use "green" CWM - it'll softbrick you.
