How does one go about extracting the CAB file from a desktop installation EXE file so I can have it with me when I want to Hard Reset ?
When you run setup.exe a folder is created in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft ActiveSync\ with the cab's
If you unplug your device from ActiveSync, run setup.exe, click start - run and type %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft ActiveSync\ (and press return), locate the new folder, copy the cab file to somewhere else, delete the folder, connect the device to ActiveSync, copy the cab to your storage card and your all set
There is also a program called Universal Extractor that unpacks most stuff - Google it
U can use universal extractor in some cases, or after runnig exe on PC files can be found smwhere in async directory, or it creates folder for itself in Program files (both on PC). Or after it starts installing, dont click anything ad search for *.cab. AFAIK it should work (expcept few apps)
FileJuicer
Filejuicer works for Macs. It is a good program for us mac users to get cab files out of .exe. www.filejuicer.com
I use this program but it doesn't work with all the EXE files. It worked 7 out 10 of the files that I tried to extract the CAB. Give it a try.
Wow ALL great ideas ands methods.
I was able to grab them from the active sync folder.
Duh I should have thought of that I have done that on the other end ( ppc) but not desktop.
Thanks

ResHack will cause a dll or exe locked to sign if u edit it heavily.
Use Heaventools Resource Editor or PE Explorer instead
I bought Resource Editor and there is no way to sign the file....It shows when I edit only 6 bitmap files it says the file is no longer signed or trusted...is there a way around this
NEVER MIND GOOGLE IS MY FRIEND

i attached the program i used to sign the htchome.dll file I patched. Do the following:
1) Put the file in the same folder as the program.
2) Go into command prompt and navigate to the folder which contains the the file (in my case C:\Documents and Settings\ScottE\Desktop\Programs\ATT Tilt\Programs\SignCode\SignCode)
3) Type "sign filename" which in my case was: sign htchome.dll
Then it should give you a message that the file was signed.
I just added a screenshot
you can also use sign tool from Microsoft SDK 2008
i tought he cannot sign the file after edit it. silly me there is also multisign tool floating in this forum based on SDK but with easy GUI.

Thats what I used..!!!! Thank you so much for the response...The 2008 SDK signs files but not really, you actually have to buy digital signatures...this way its free and works....
Just copied my phncanbmp test file to my phone and it works like a charm!!

Ok, please excuse me and this question. I'm a At&t Tilt, Treo and iPAQ user.
I'm new to this forum and I have an issue.
When I download a file, for instance: Risidoro_Intent_MIDlet_Manager_11.1.7.1023.cab.zip
I open it with WinRar and Extract to my desktop
inside the new folder is _setup.xml and a bunch of different files that say stuff like 00CAB10D.004
How do I install these?
When I open _setup on my Tilt or on my PC I get a script that opens up in Internet Explorer.
Thanks a bunch,
Alan
You don't install them.
Windows Mobile installer files are in cab format
to install just copy the cab file itself to your device and run it thru your PDA's file explorer
Still confused, what do I open?
Theres around 10 files and when I open them they say something like open this with an application.
And when I open _setup it shows me a script.
unzip the ZIP file so you get a file.CAB (DON'T exctract the CAB).
drop the cap into your device and double click it..
I found dex2jar that is intended to convert .dex files to human readable .class files in java. The tutorial however is not very complete and even after putting both the .apk and the dex2jar unzipped file into a folder and running the code in command prompt, all I receive is the opening of dex2jar.sh. I do not find the .jar file that should be generated in the same folder. Anybody with experience with dex2jar want to post a tutorial or some help?
1. dex2jar.sh file.apk
2. profit
I feel like an idiot right now. The sh file is for Linux computers, I am on windows, so I should have ran the batch file.
im going to bump this thread...
i am having some problems with dex2jar right now. ive been able to properly run baksmali, but for some reason im not able to run dex2jar.
im on windows 7, and ive tried saving the .zip file to a folder then unzipping with command prompt, and etc. however, this process does not unzip for me. maybe, i need to look up the unzip command lines to make sure, if im even entering the informaiton correctly. though, i assume that i could just unzip the .zip program into a folder using winace, or something. And, the dex2jar program would work the same. i might be wrong, but i manually unzipped dex2jar to a folder.
then, since my phone is rooted. I easily have access to classes.dex files. So, I put the classes.dex files in the same folders as the dex2jar files and etc.
now, i run command prompt and try to pull up all the directories to the dex2jar.bat and classes.dex files. after i have the directories set up. I run the command line of dex2jar.bat classes.dex
and usually gives me an error of
'java' not recognized on internet or/and external etce etc etc..
ive had the same error with baksmali, but i was doing something wrong, as in the file system and using the wrong command line.
i've tried moving up a few directories too the lib files, and running the dex2jar-0.0.7.8-SNAPSHOT.jar file, (or whatever it is called) in the command line with classes.dex and it gives an error, but the last line says batch (or something) is operational.
SORRY, for the lOOOOOOOnnnng run down, but i really need help.
@badmonopoly
Initially, I struggled a bit, but here's what i did to make it work (on XP)
1. Extract all the files in the zip file to a folder. You can use any extracting tool in windows.
2. Copy you .dex file to this folder.
3. Run setclasspath.bat. This should be run because this data is used in the next step.
4. Go to Windows Command prompt, change the folder path to the folder where you extracted the zip file in step 1 and run the command as follows:
dex2jar.bat classes.dex
5. Tada!! Your jar file will be ready in the same folder.
Hope this helps..
P.S.: You need to have Java installed on your Windows machine for this to work.

cant open the file.
file is corrupted
why??
Hi All,
I've used Heathcliff's WP7RootTools 0.9 to extract a file from an installed apps IsolatedStorage. The app in question was installed from the Marketplace, but I want to modify some of the files it's saved to it's Isolated Storage.
I extracted the file I wanted to edit by using the Explorer utility in WP7RootTools to copy the file to the "My Documents" folder, and renamed the extension to docx. From there I could simply go into the Office Hub, where the file was now listed, and emailed the file to myself.
I have made the edits to the file, but now need to get the file back into the app's Isolated Storage. This is where I have now got a bit stuck
I've tried copying the file to SkyDrive, and using the Office Hub to download it from SkyDrive to my phone. The file downloaded and is cached on the phone somewhere, but the file location, according to Office is not "Phone". This is normal, as Skydrive downloaded documents are not saved to the "Phone" location until you open the document and do "Save as".
I cannot of course open the downloaded file, as it isn't really a .docx file. Files loacted in the "Phone" location show up in "My Documents" in the WP7RootTools explorer. SkyDrive downloaded documents I have no idea where they are located?
Can you guys help? Does anyone know the path to location of SkyDrive downloaded items on the phone. If so, then I can easily just use the WP7Roottools Explorer to copy the file back to the apps Isolated Storage.
Is there a better way to copy a non-Office file back onto the phone?
Regards,
Micro666
You could use one of these apps:

i was going to suggest using WPV App Data Backup, but it seems i saved the Backups in the wrong location... (will fix in next release)
so,
you can use TouchXperience or WMDC Launcher.

I'm looking to do the exact same thing....
Options:
1. Do exactly what you've been doing, but save as .txt instead of .docx. The phone can still open this, even though its probably a binary file, and save it to the "Phone" location. Then you can copy it back and rename it.
2. Use an app that gives direct access to the phone's filesystem from the PC, like TouchXperience+WPDM, or Root Webserver (see my sig)+your favorite webbrowser.
3. Use any other way to get a file onto the phone, such as emailing it to yourself, using IsolatedStorageexplorer, or putting it in a XAP files and installing that file. Then move the file with WP7 Root Tools.
I recommend approach #2.

I used TouchExperience.
1.On my Fully unlocked Device(I assume you can do this with root tools), I installed a file manager that gives full access to the device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24636416&postcount=23
2. I installed TouchEperience on my PC. After giving the WP7 app, Root tools rights, it should show most of the file system(on the PC) but, not all of it. So I created a new folder in \Windows (temp).
3. On the Phone, I hunted down the file I was looking for from Isolated Storage, I copied it to the \windows\temp folder.
4. Used the PC TouchExperience and browsed to \Windows\temp, there was my files, I copied them to my PC. USed the File Explorer to delete the files in my \temp folder(to make sure they were gone).
5. I edited the files, copied them back to \Windows\Temp on my device via TouchExperience on the PC. Then used the file explorer to copy them back to the Isolated Storage.
Note: The file explorer I posted a link to is GREAT, it can even edit files (basic text editor) in Isolated storage. I found a way to Cheat on a marketplace Xbox live game (didn't try others), right before the achivements, so they were really easy to get
I'm sure there is easier methods but, this worked for me...
Can I ask, what app did you try this on ?
Hope this helped...
FYI DavidinCT: Cheating XBL games is very risky. Microsoft often can detect it (for example, if you get one achievement that would have required getting another first) and they can and will permanently ban your Xbox Live account for doing so.
That all said... why didn't you just use WPDM (on the PC) to copy the file straight to the IsoStore of the app? So much easier...

To be honest, I only did it with a game that had an error when I got so far, so the final achivements of the game. A Game with a Known issue but, no fix.
And I just really wanted to see if I COULD do it...
I used WPDM but, the PC version even with my phone fully unlocked (custom rom on my VZW HTC Trophy) and using Root tools 0.9 to give full to TouchExperince root, would not see all the folders and would not see the IsoStore. SO I had to copy the files to a folder that WMDM could see.
Personally, the new File Explorer above is awsome, it's even got a editor in it, I didn't even need to go through all that......
