I have a question about flashing roms... - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello and I am a newbie here when it comes to flashing roms, but I am learning though. I have a question about flashing roms, I saw a rom done by benice, and it had a seperate link for the oc kernal. Now if I were to flash his rom, would the oc kernal be included in his custom rom, or would I have to flash that seperately? Thank for any replies...

It's separate unless noted

Flashing

So I've been flashing various roms, kernels, and radios onto my Nexus S since the release. I've never read to deeply into the exact procedure for flashing these items.
I know you are suppose to wipe device, cache, davik, ect. But then are you suppose to flash the rom, reboot the device, and then flash the kernel and radio?
What if you wiped the device and just flashed a rom without a kernel? Does the kernel you have previously take into effect or is it built into the rom?
No, Roms come with a kernel. If you don't flash a kernel you will have whatever kernel the developer uses in his/her Rom.

Wha? Not all ROM's come with kernels... if you flash one that does not have a kernel then you will be left with what you had before (stock).

[Q] Where is Faux Kernel?

I'm running EagleBlood and i'm looking for the Faux Kernel. I was told these two run good together, so I wanted to try it out.
A link to the Kernel would be nice
And just making sure, do I just flash it like a ROM?
It should be in the development section... which EB are you running? GB or Froyo?
That being said, essentially you will just flash it like a ROM, there are instructions on the OP of the thread, but I implore you to read, then, read some more before you flash because there is some stuff you should know about flashing kernels prior to doing.
Good luck... and then read some more....

Insecure kernel XWKK2?

I'm looking for an insecure XWKK2 kernel, and to be honest I've lost faith in my quest. Is there any possibility to use any other kernel to flash with? And I'm not interested in CFRoot, it just won't work with my phone for some reason,
Mustaron
i am also looking for this insecure kernel I9100XWKK2
i'm needing one too
You could look in the development forum for i9100 and pick one of the custom kernels that are flashable with Odin. Make sure your device is compatible with the kernel though.
I like siyah personally.

[Q] any way to flash a different rom while keeping your current kernel?

some help would be appreciated! or how can i back up my kernel to update.zip? i tried sgs kernel flasher but it is incompatible
Easiest way I would think is to just flash that kernel again right afterwards. Kernels are generic, so none of your personal data is stored on them.
lets say i dont have it now what?
It's not a kernel that you can download from here..?
sadly no
Look in the Dev then sticky then all in one thread you'll find all the kernel's custom and stock I have all them download from there.

unless that kernel was custom made for u by a Dev then its here. If u or someone u know compiled it u wouldn't be asking the question lol. u can back up the kernel using advanced and then flash back after rom install

[Q] Updating Kernel

Sup, so I'm still quite the noob at all the rooted stuff, like flashing etc... I have franco kernel and im running cm, when i update my kernel am I supposed to flash the kernel again or will it actually be updated?
For which phone n its not necessary to flash again n again unless u flash with custom rom

(But CM has really good kernel)
When flashing a custom ROM the kernel is flashed as well. Most of the time that kernel is an adapted kernel of a widely used one (e.g. Semaphore or DerTeufel), so that it can be verified in conjunction with the ROM. So yes, when flashing the custom ROM, immediately after that flash the kernel of choice. With the right app, you can even configure the kernel and play around with strings and scripts
