[Q] Samsung Captivate Source Code Now Open? - Captivate General

I think I just made a mess in my pants. Can someone confirm this??? Here is the letter:
Dear _____________,
You can download the source code of SGH-I897 on this site in Mobile Category, SGH-I897 model.
Thank you.
Weighing in at about 161 megabytes, the code should assist developers wishing to work on custom Captivate ROMs. Samsung Captivate owners have been eager to see their first custom builds as the device has sold thousands already since its nationwide launch at AT&T on the 18th.
In particular, there is one mod that Captivate owners are excited about the most: the “mimocan external SD card lag fix.” The fix promises to double Quadrant benchmark scores as the application data is moved to the external memory. Right now, the Samsung Galaxy S series outperforms every processor in every phone in every category except for the I/O benchmark in Quadrant. The Galaxy S scores so poorly because of Samsung’s implementation of the internal memory, but mimocan’s lag fix remedies this problem and raises Quadrant scores to new heights around 1750.
With Android 2.2 just around the corner for American Samsung Galaxy S owners, Captivate users could be seeing benchmarks around 2000-3000 with the JIT compiler and mimocan lag fix.
So, what are you waiting for? You can download the open source code below or at Samsung’s Open Source website.

Every time they officially release a firmware, they are required to release source code. So, yes, captivate source code has been available for JF6 and JH7 for a while.
And with Rogers already released 2.2 firmware, they will have to release source code to Roger 2.2 as well.
Mind you, not everything is released in source code. For most part, drivers are not open source released.

Someone just posted over in the dev forums, the Rogers 2.2 Source is live (just downloaded this morning) so hopefully we'll see some nice updates on the ROMs in the next several days...

Dk05 source kernel dropped for samsung

So the dk05 source kernel has been dropped on 11/15/2010 for the Korean Samsung Galaxy shw-m110s, the specs look almost the same as the sgh-d700, hummingbird 1ghz processor, Samoled, 480x800 display. Besides some other major and minor details in differences, i'm sure there could be some things of use...So a couple buddies and i are going to see what we can pick it apart and hopefully get a jump start on 2.2...fail or succeed it's worth a start somewhere.
Samsung Epic leaked 2.2 froyo 4.2DJ29, Di18 modem
QuantamRom1.1, smiley->@ hack,ACS 2.2 Theme,
Neocore 56fps, linpack 20mflops, quadrant 1020, BenchmarkPi 1273 #11750, Now with Ubuntu.
Now this is becoming Epic!
link to the source?
Looking at http://opensource.samsung.com/ only the DK05 source for the Galaxy A and Galaxy Tab were released.
I'm glad they released it before the two Koreas start nuking each other.
We'll never get the source now
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
sorry about the late reply was working
but there is one on github from someone named liliniser
https://github.com/Liliniser/SHW-M110S-FroYo
if wanted i'll add a link to m dropbox for the zip. it seems so far that some of the main differences between the two is that the epic has the qwerty keyboard and the shw has more internal memory over the epic.but it's not an internal sdcard.
everywhere taht i look says the korean version is gsm as well.. which means a lot more variations for us and would be more akin to the vibrant or i9000

Yeah I noticed it was in korean gsm, im waiting to see if the chinese cdma variant kernel will be dropped. There are some things in this one that looks good and hope to work it into the epic. I do see the tvout goodie in there though.

Looking promising so far, although who cares about the DK05 kernel unless it is the exact same source as the froyo OTA? Not a whole lot we can do with this until it is determined whether or not this will be the same as the final source code. Add that on top of the fact that it is for GSM phones rather than CDMA too :-/

Did i read this right? Devs have their hands on gingerbread, are porting to devices

http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...her-phones-heres-our-frequently-updated-list/
Thread title says it all.
They have the AOSP source code so yes many phones have gingerbread right now but not an official release or anything like that
cyanogenmod 7 nightlies start next week.
Moved to general
Allenfx,
I went to several of the sites and as I understand it what has been done is release the stock Android 3.0 Honeycomb stuff to the developers. But now they will have to tailor it to the hardware of the individual devices. I did see tegra2 stuff where I looked.
So I think you might say it is coming. But it will depend on how long it takes to get all the drivers and settings to work.
It will not be a quick process like the updates for VEGAn, TNT, etc. Much more work and detail to be done.
If this doesn't answer the question, someone straighten me out!
Rev
Nice to know its being worked on
Not sure it makes any sense to spend too much time working on GTablet ports to Gingerbread (i.e. Android 2.3) when I'd expect that Honeycomb (Android 3.0) devices will be out shortly and the Honeycomb source will drop for AOSP use within a couple of weeks of the first device -- which looks like it may be the Motorola Xoom...
As mentioned, Cyanogenmod 7 will be Gingerbread and will likely be the first ported to the GTablet (assuming that there isn't too much driver tweaking involved between Froyo and GB)
2.3-3.0
I think we will see gingerbread in early summer officially released by viewsonic, although modders here will most likely have a great Rom based on 2.3 before then. My bet(just my opinion) we wont see Honeycomb on the G tab until sometime in the fall.
Would love to be wrong and see 3.0 sooner.....

What is your source for Gingerbread being available in summer from Viewsonic?
Source Please?
Notice how he said "I think" and "my opinon". The source is himself.

That was a little joke for my amusement.
But thank you, I think you made my point for me. I had made a comment in another post and gave my opinion and wantadroid asked me to site my source of information (inside info). I posted that I have read... and I got this reply:
"Please give us your inside info on the hardware problems.... I haven't found A thing to make me believe the G tab won't EVENTUALLY get Honeycomb."

Samsung releases official Froyo for Captivate then quickly takes it back

Samsung Captivate Android OS 2.2 Upgrade Released Then Quickly Pulled
By Ed Hardy, Brighthand.com Editor | 2/17/2011

The long-awaited upgrade to Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) for AT&T's Samsung Captivate was released today... only to be quickly withdrawn.
Currently, it's not clear if this system software upgrade was released by mistake, or if a bug was found in it almost immediately.
This is just another blow to users of the Captivate, which was released last summer with Android OS 2.1, even though the latest version of Google's mobile operating system at that time was already OS 2.2.
Although Samsung has committed to releasing an upgrade for this model, and at one point said this would be available by the end of November, users of this smartphone are still waiting.
Since then, Google has introduced Android OS 2.3, which is currently available only on the Samsung Nexus S.
New in Android OS 2.2 (Froyo)
Android OS 2.2 is required for devices to run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which allows the web browser to fully make use of websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video.
This version of Google's operating system also contains a number of other enhancements, such as faster performance thanks to a new JIT compiler and the ability to store applications on a removable memory card.
In addition, Samsung has promised that this system software upgrade will include a fix for a bug that sometimes causes these smartphones to be unable to get a GPS lock.

This news is days old and there have been at least 5 threads about this already...mods please close this.

something pretty significant has happened (release of froyo source for both epic and vibrant). Both were released pretty quietly and have started seeing some reports of the epics push starting the 21st.
I don't think it will be long before we see the source released for the captivate.
Its kind of weird for me personally...
Do I really care about the official Froyo 2.2? Not really...
Do I want AT&T/Samsung to release it? If they promised it, they should...
I only want to see it release to know that a major company kept their word. Plus, if it helps the devs here release other ROMs based on a true US Cappy build, then I'm all for it.
I'd like to see it released, but I'm not so sure that I'll be rushing back to stock so I can update to it.
And the story is wrong. Froyo was never released... no one downloaded it.
The only thing that was released was some instructional pages.
Posting a story that is wrong is even worse then posting rumors.

Gongerbread for I9000 just cane out

So if anyone hasn't heard yet, those lucky europe guys got the official gingerbread for their I9000. From I read its super quick and is still on rfs.. so hopefully some of the devs can grab that scource soon and port that bad boy over here!

Unless I'm mistaken, this doesn't affect us too much because we don't have the source code. Maybe we'll see it on samfirware.com soon.
whats gongerbread?
engadget states...
Samsung said its Android 2.3 update for the Galaxy S would come in mid-April and, by golly, it meant it literally. Sometime during the night between the 15th and 16th days of this month, the Korean manufacturer's Kies servers started serving up a fresh portion of Gingerbread to Galaxy S owners in parts of Europe, and now reports are coming in of users successfully updating their Hummingbird-equipped handsets. It's a limited rollout, benefiting the Nordic countries, Holland and Germany first, but we doubt Samsung will hold out on the rest of Europe for much longer. If you want to try your luck, boot up your Kies updating utility and pray to your nearest tech deity.

i wonder if this is gonna be tw 4.0? ill be more likely to use cm7 still but i would like to try it
From what I've seen, this is still TW 3.0. I've glanced over at the i9000 forums, and they're not saying anything about 4.0.
It will be tw3. Also we'd like to port it over to the captivate via reorientation. Make a request to http://opensource.samsung.com/ for sourcecode release.
You can also request via twitter so it pressures the PR department.
chill out, guys, this is just dongerbread. gingerbread won't be out for a while
Lol @ Gongerbread

Question for Entropy, JT1134, Scotthart, RE: Exynos3 Source

I've been following, off and on, the struggle Entropy and other devs have been having with Samsung to ensure clearer documentation and accurate source files. It seems like Samsung may have opened up a little with their Insignal repositories. What I'd like to know - and haven't been able to discover - is if Samsung has already (or intends to) release the same for Exynos 3 (hummingbird). The source up on their regular opensource site is clearly not complete. Also, have Samsung opened up enough that Cyanogenmod will continue developing for Samsung devices?
I have a few reasons for asking. One is that I have another year on my contract with the Infuse and feel pretty annoyed that Gingerbread is as high as they'll go (my fault, but before this, I really had no concept of how primitive Gingerbread is). I'm happy that development has lived on here on xda, but I'd like to have a properly working camera. I don't think that's going to happen until Samsung open up.
The other reason is that, having read all Entropy has had to say on the matter, I won't buy another Samsung phone for me or family members until I know development can continue beyond AT&T and Samsung's arbitrary schedules.

I know! Afterlife development is what Android has going for it over iOS (IMHO). I guess Moto, Samsung, HTC, etc - just like every freaking retailer in America - really want everyone to buy into iOS? Had I opted for an iPhone 3GS, I'd still be eligible to upgrade to iOS 6. & I would have been able to copy and paste a tracking number the day I booted up my phone! LOL! Now, do I want a walled garden to enclose all my other walled gardens? Or do I want a walled garden with a gate?

Have you looked at the JB Roms for the infuse? I'm loving The ParanoidAndroid port Scott's done.. I've also put the AOCP rom on there as well as an AOKP rom but I always go back to PA..
as soon as the infuse was in my hands I installed a JB Rom I never had to deal w/ Gingerbread or Froyo or even ICS.. I did the same for my captivate and my 2 Skyrocket 2's as well..

I'm not sure why you ask. Yes, is the answer, but I don't know what that has to do with the topic. The camera doesn't work properly on JB and I don't think it will until either a) a developer with particular expertise in digital recording has time to spare or b) Samsung releases the source. I've tinkered enough with the source to know more or less what the main problem is, but where it is and how to solve it is well beyond me. There are other little problems too, but they may not be important in the long run.
I often wondered why Entropy called the Infuse, the Confuse. When I started rifling though the source, I found out: the Infuse is a Frankenphone.
I wasn't thinking of the video recording functionality w/ regards to the camera. Apart from that, it all works quite well for me. I haven't tried the 4.2 AOSP based ROMs so I don't know about the video recording functionality of that. I highly doubt Samsung is interested in furthering the development of the infuse as its getting pretty old.
