android newbie question - G Tablet General

I am new to the android world. I am an avid flasher on my WM phone. I have a new G tablet which I immediately flashed the TNT lite rom. Works great.
I have one question though. Is there a way to easily transfer files from internal memory to my external sd card? I have tried copy and paste, but I never get a paste command once copied. I have downloaded some of the apps that are supposed to help move apps to the sd card, but none do files. Specifically, I put all my music onto the tab, and would prefer to run it from the sd card to preserve space.
At this point, it the only way I can figure it out is to repaste all the music to an SD card from my PC and then stick that card in the tablet. Am I correct?

Astro file manager can do this. Long hold and copy (or cut, more precisely), then move to the directory you want them in (/sdcard, for instance) and choose "Edit", and there should be a paste option.

You should be able to do this in the file manager that came with the rom. It's been a while since I've used TNT Lite (have since been using VEGAn and LOVING it). I move files (single and multiple) all the time in the iFileManager that came with the rom I am using. Although every once in a while it won't let me move the file but will let me copy it to another directory (then I just have to delete the original file afterwards). Simply long press the file you want to move, navigate to the folder you want to paste the file using the file manager interface (meaning using the "up folder" at the top rather than using the "back" button on your gTab. Once you're in the folder you want to paste the file simply select "paste".
I suppose you can install other file managers but with each app you install on your gTab you run the risk of cluttering it up with apps you will seldom use. That's just my .2 cents.
One more thing, if you're going to be doing a lot of sideloading and/or moving files from your pc or phone to the gTab I would strongly recommend getting a free Dropbox account which will allow you to transfer files between all of the devices you install Dropbox on.

I will try it. I am already using both the ifile manager and dropbox. I think I just missed a step.

Invisible Files on MicroSD Card?

All of the sudden, all the files on my SD card went missing! I was transferring music and video files to the device over USB (as a storage card, per the custom ROM USB/PC feature) and after it was done, it showed my card as blank.
I took the card out of the phone (XV6900) and put it into my SD adapter and into my computer. The 4GB card shows that 1.8GB are in use when I go to properties, however, there are no files at all in the root of the drive! Like they are invisible! (Yes, I have Windows set to show all hidden and system files, so that is not the problem)
How do I get my files to reappear? It looks like they are not actually deleted! i don't get why this happened all of the sudden
you can try an undelete program and check the sdcard while in the reader
undelete programs can handle sdreaders just like they can hd's

I'm using the same 4GB card as my old phones. this never happened on my Titan or TouchPro, each of which I have for a year or so. I have had a Vogue for 1 week and it has happened twice! does the XV6900 wipe the card periodically or when performing certain actions? even on a ROM update/flash it should touch the SD card when running from the RUU package in windows

How to move Amazon MP3s to External SD?

I recently bought a 16GB card for my G2X, and I started downloading more of my music directly to the phone. The problem is, I can't seem to figure out how to move my music to the External SD. I tried to use Astro, but when I selected the Amazon MP3 folder and tried to copy it to the External SD, I got a move error.
Now that I look further, I can't seem to do SQUAT with the external SD. I see it listed in SD and phone storage, but I can't move anything to it with Apps2SD or with the native GB app manager. Am I just missing something?
Are you rooted? If so, try using a Root File Explorer, such as SUFBS or Root Explorer.
I am not. Do I really need to root to use that external SD slot?

No, but I just figured, you'd be able to have SU Access, hence, more permissions in Android to move files.
Just try a different file manager from the market. I always had trouble with Astro when moving files to the external sdcard. Anttek File Explorer and Super Manager are two good ones and they're both free.
First thing you do is unmount you external sd card in the sd card settings of the phone and then take it out right away after it says unmounte dof corse then reinstall it and wait till it is done scanning it then see if that works. If not then I would try a different card one that you know works in something else and also try that on in a different device like your pc and see if it workes there this way you can determin if the card is broken or if the phone slot is brokem and if the phone seems to be broken I would try a factory reset.
Thanks, Phburks, I tried Super Manager and that seems to be moving it just fine!

[Q] My apps won't load after switching SD card

I just got a legit sandisk 32gb class 4 off of newegg and before swapping I transferred everything from the external SD folder to my internal, did the swap, formatted in the phone then swapped the contents of my old external SD to the new one. Rebooted a few times but my apps will not load. All my apps are saved to phone or internal SD card as well.
Does anyone know why?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
copying from external to internal would not have copied hidden files.. and many of the apps may have had their own direcdtories on external sd with hidden files..
i always do this is pc by backing up old sd to a directory on the pc (make sure to have view hidden and system files on)
they copy back to a new sd card..
double check what was copied by doing a check disk on the old and new cards and comparing number of files and directories including hidden.. should be the same.
Even if show hidden files was checked off within the phone options itself?

I keep all the .apk files in a seperate folder on my PC ,as I switch phones to the newest thing once or twice a month,I swap my SD card to new phone, then reinstall the programs from the .apk folder using Astro or whatever your choice of software ,the saved files will find the newly installed progs with hidden files and all,you dont even have to reinstall key codes, passwords or nada,If you are a SICK phone Junkie like me,it will save you lots of stress...Vegas
Sorry, is there a way to move this to the Q and A section? my XDA app doesn't show the Q&A area.

How to transfer to a larger SD Card?

i did search the forums for an answer, but im running into a problem that hasnt been encountered by others. I would like to switch my sd card from a 4gb to a 8gb. if i just copy and paste the files, i get a pop up advising that theres a file/folder thats name is too long, and it will only skip it. I dont want to leave behind any important files. any help with this?
aside from my music and photos( the easy part) 75% of my apps are installed to the sd card

Just copy your current SD Card (4GB) contents to the PC. Then format your new SD Card (8GB). After that just copy the contents back onto the new SD Card, and load it back inot your Shift. You should be good to go.

You'll be fine. I've copied my sd contents to my PC and back a few times and I always get that "name too long" error on one file and I've always just skipped it with no problems.
thanks.... i found out that the source of my problem was the folder "android" but i pretty much just took what i needed from that folder, and created a new one on the root of the sd card, and placed the contents there, every other file/folder transferred smoothly

ES File Mgr Issue With SD

I'm using ES File Manager to copy files from my computer to a new Note PRO. I can copy files to the internal storage but I can't copy to the external SD. Also, I cannot use ES File Manager to move files from internal storage to the SD. I can use the stock file manager to move files between internal and SD. So the questions are:
1) Can ES File Manager be made to copy files to the SD card?
2) If not, then can the stock file manager access Windows devices to copy files from the computer to the SD?
Likely the Kitkat SD write permission issue. See here:

Yep, that looks like it. Thank you. I'm not ready to root yet to solve the issue. I was not able to tell if this is a bug or by design. It's pretty limiting.
Still trying to figure out if the built-in file manager can be used to copy from a Windows computer to the SD card.
If you connect your tablet to your windows PC you should be able to access internal and external sdcard. They will show up as separate drives. If they don't, install Kies 3 then connect your tablet again.

I was hoping to get this done using wi-fi just for the convenience. It is something I did with previous devices. It always surprised when a basic feature goes away.
If you have an FTP server installed on your PC, My Files app can pull your files that way, then save them to external sdcard
ES File Explorer implemented the workaround within the first few days of KitKat's release. I've been using it to move files in all directions to and from my MicroSD on my Note 3, S5 and NotePro for months without issue. The main thing that doesn't work is renaming.
However, the WiFi transfer to MicroSD has been blocked by Google for security reasons after a series of WiFi-related file security problems. No file manager is capable of this without Root. Same as how you can no longer download files off the internet directly onto the MicroSD.
It's much faster to just pull out the MicroSD and plug it into a PC, anyway. The transfer protocols on Android are a nightmare.
