So I've been a smartphone person for a while and the last good phone I had was the Nokia N91 which broke. I've been using a crappy Samsung slider to make/take calls and send/receive messages.
I'm getting a new phone and have narrowed down my choices to 2.
HTC HD2 (Leo) or the HTC Hero.
Now, I love the HTC Hero but the only thing keeping me is what I've heard about it being very laggy (and ive seen some videos, opening the mail takes at least 5-10 seconds). I have used the Android OS several times at the store and really love it (recently tried the HTC Droid Eric by Verizon).
I have also used Windows Mobile and find it okay, but seem to like Android better. Also, HTC Hero will NOT get 3G in the US...
I'm looking at the HD2 because it packs a lot of horsepower... 1Ghz is pretty dang nice, and from the videos I've seen lag does not exist AT ALL.
So now I have this dilemma... should I buy the HD2 or Hero. I guess it comes down to whether or not WinMo is better than Android (FOR ME. Please don't start a android vs winmo flame war).
What do you guys think?
P.S. I need to buy an unlocked GSM. No other options. Will probably get it from Middle East/Europe. Availability in a certain region is not an issue for me.

I am personally waiting for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 which runs android, a very high resolution, and the snapdragon processor, in my opinion it is superior to the hd2 and the hero

PPC means Pocket PC. Anything that runs Windows Mobile is a pocket PC. It's not a term you see much nowadays.
The HD2 is probably the best PPC/WM device out there at the moment. As far as I'm aware (others please correct me if I'm wrong) the Eris is the Hero in another casing spcifically for Verizon. If only the Leo ran Android....

Im trying to get a phone that will make me happy! Also i want to develop software for it ive been desktop programming for years but making some apps on a mobile seems like it may be very fun and net some money especially on the right platform!
I currently own an ATT fuze (touch pro1) before that i had a tilt (TyTan II). I know winmo very well been using it since the ipaq 3650, about 10 years ago. I love winmo for many reasons, especially ports of all the old school games from when i was a kid like quake and duke3d! I also love almost all software is free. But Ive come to the conclusion though that i hate winmo on my phone, just do, i think its bulky and slow and glitchee. Winmo is sorda like a pda first to me then a phone second. I want something thats also a nice phone! Something i dont need the stylus for ever!
So i had my heart set on a samsung moment. I recently started running XDAndroid on my touch pro. Im in love with it. I love the OS but i do have some problems with XDAndroid it as it is right now. It kills my battery, theres no speach texting(my rommies moto has this, shes running 2.1 too), the gps, blutooth, and camera dont work, nor does the 3d acceleration.
So heres my question if im patient will XD be full featured and have better battery life? Im thinking about getting a touch pro 2 when i switch to sprint now. I want android as my primary OS, but i think it would be nice to also have access to winmo as its been a piece of me for so long. The sad thing is i know winmo 7 is coming out looks great but its a whole revamp and MS wants to dictate to the hardware vendors everything down to the button layout (i hate this, its going to be like an iphone no vendor customization), so im assuming that a touch pro 2 will never get an offical release of winmo7 and may not even meet the hardware requirments?
The whole reason i want the TP2 is in hopes that Android will run flawlessy on it with all the same features as a native phone, and that i will be able to update the tp2 to windows7 since it will make all other winmo phones obselete the day it comes out.
The whole reason i want android is becuase i belive its much better than the current winmo phones. I also belive its a better platform to jump on the band wagon for, as far as writing apps. I truly believe android will surpass the iphone in a few years. This is a really solid platform to get involved with.
So TP2 or Samsung moment? If i put all may cards on a flawless version of XDAndroid with all are hardware working and the battery life and freezing issues resloved will i be let down? Also will i be let down if i want my tp2 to run winmo7? Basically im going to the moment if the TP2 cant run winmo7 and if XDAndroid will never be as perfect as a native android device. The moment also has an 800mhz cpu and an AMOLED screen which in my opion is better hardware than the TP2.

But my point if anyone knows if XDAndroid will be flawless soon and support all the hardware and rohdium will will go to winmo7 then in all reality the tp2 my be a better device because it will be capable of running any of the os's . If XDanroid wont be perfect netime soon and the tp cant do winmo7 then theres no reason for me to buy it becuase i want android in full working order and the hardware in the samsung is alot better than rohdiums right now.

I want to get a new one, but i just read that htc still doesn't deliver the correct drivers as with the devices with 1gHz qualcomm snapdragon processors. My friend bought a HTC HD2 and its nice and crisp with 2d, all i've noticed it runs d3d apps very slow, just like my kaiser did. I also read that it has problems with opengl games stuttering and being slow. i did not understand, does the turbo3d fix the issue, or does it just make it slightly better?
So can anyone please offer me some phones to think about?
I would really like to get a winmo 6.5 phone like hd2 or hd mini, also i wouldn't mind android but no nokia's or iphones please.
What do you think about hd mini, hd2, touch pro2? and about wildfire,desire,hero and nexus one?

I like my Captivate (Galaxy S phone for AT&T) but it has GPS issues, and AFAIK, all the Galaxy S phones do.

I had a kaiser for 4 years, then moved to the EVO on launch day. Couldn't be happier, phone is snappy as all hell, and haven't run into missing driver issues at all - the only thing HTC dropped the ball on with the EVO is capping the frame rate at 30 fps (which causes that stuttering), but if you're rooted, you can load a custom kernel that breaks the cap. Although I'm very familiar with the drivers that were missing from the kaiser, I haven't heard about any missing drivers on the EVO - care to provide a link?
Any of the galaxy s line of phones are good too - if you're coming from a kaiser, you may like the epic for the slide-out keyboard, bit they're all pretty much the same. These also have the top of the line performance for the 3d graphics that you mentioned. The 3d graphics on the EVO are pretty good (you only run into issues with some of the more demanding 3d games), but this is really where the galaxy s phones shine.
Unless you're really tied to wm6.5, I would stay away from it - it will be completely obsolete in just a few months when version 7 comes out. Unlike previous versions of wm, 7 won't be backwards compatible, so pretty soon there won't be any compatible apps for any wm6.5 devices. I would also say that any slowness or lagging that you saw on the hd2 was more than likely caused by wm, and not the chip. Give Android a shot - you won't be sorry. And stay away from the hero too, its not going to be upgraded anymire either - in fact you may want to stay away from any device without a 1ghz chip.

The epic actually doesn't, and the gps issues on the other galaxy s phones are all supposed to be patched by the end of Sep.

well i don't really like the looks of evo, what about desire? it runs droid 2.1, has a 1gHz processor, what do you think about it? What about hd2? i read somewhere that it has a 100% working port of android (1.6 i think, and i guess it will get an update to 2.2) also has a 1 gHz processor.
Anyways, i know hd2 supports multitouch, but i couldn't find anywhere if the desire does.
Now about galaxy S... i have bad memories about my samsung phones, its the only phone manufacturer i cant stand.
i guess its either hd2 (because i think its the best of the current models with wm) and some android model like desire or nexus one that has 1gHz processor.

I have a desire. It's alright but its not brilliant. I got it because the carrier didn't offer a hd2. Android is very, very, very irritating. If you think it's linux - beware, it has nothing to do with it. I flashed a dozen roms, radios, rooted it, partitioned sd card. It either kills the sdcard or gets a huge memory leak. And it is not working properly. It is just not a market grade mobile os. It's for kids, women and enthusiasts. On top of that the xda section which deals with the desire is not very friendly.
Htc is about productivity, they were never about 3d graphics.
I don't play games but I would suggest you get HD2 or desire. The other htc models you mentioned are much slower, or think about a samsung, I don't like them but I hear the graphics are better

It's a bit hard, if you are used to winmo, you'll sure be irritated by the desire. Otherwise htc gave android some life, but expect difficulties. If you want winmo, you should probably wait for a mo7 device. I'm sure they will port it to the hd2 but it's not the same as the original device. That's why I got the desire. I will wait for several months after the mo7 launch and if it is any good I'll go for it. The desire is ok but it's just not what android fans claim it to be
Get a Galaxy S or a Nexus One, both amaaaaaaaaaaazing phones. Samsung got it right with the Galaxy S
And get away from Windows Mobile. I come from a Touch Pro 2 and it is a terrible, laggy OS. Android 2.1+ is where it's at
An HD2 (with Android running) or an Evo could be another option. The Desire is a slower phone than all of the other phones I've mentioned here.

i can deal with android, i use linux on my pc so i don't think it will be a problem. Anyways, you think winmo7 will be ported to hd2? the thing is that it will probably locked down like that dam iphone, i want something that i can easily transfer music, videos and photos. Is it worth buying an hd2 and maybe use the port of android to it so i would still have winmo and android? i heard some builds are 100% compatible and working on hd2, like from nexus and desire, so maybe hd2 is a better option?
Though, i know that it has some weird problems with open gl. I know there is an app called turbo3d, can anyone tell me does it fix the problem completely or is it just something that makes it slightly better? if so, im getting an hd2. whaddayathink?

Well I had a touch pro with the soft ported from diamond2/pro2/hd2, then I got a diamond2. It was twice as fast with the same software and they were both winmo6,5 and both the infamous msm7xxx chipset. If you have this in mind you will easily conclude that the android port on HD2 will be pretty much a joke.
The nexus one is a bad joke. I don't intend to discuss samsung at all. The google software which is on the desire is again a bad joke, for example the gmail app crashes on the stock rom. What makes the desire a nice phone is the htc software inside, which is borrowed from winmo.
Don't mistake android with linux. I used linux before win7 came out. From my perspective linux is you. You can make it do whatever the hell you want. It can look the way you want. Android has nothing to do with linux. I rooted mine and if you think you can edit xorg.conf (doesn't exist anyway) or make the trackpad do whatever you want or customise it in the way you did with kde/gnome and compiz, just forget about it. It is just something which borrowed the name linux.
I'm not sure about the mo7 port but there are some brilliant guys in the mo section therefore it is a possibility.

Maybe i should wait til wm7 is released, then maybe htc will release a new android phone that probably will have better software than n1 or desire, or maybe i will even buy something with wm7. OR MAYBE I SHOULD JUST BUY A FREAKING ASUS P535 that i used to have, witch worked without problems, all the apps worked fine, 3d was a blessing from the god itself. Damn the stupid qualcomm. I am actually very afraid of buying again from HTC. I had such high hopes for the kaiser when i bought it and i am afraid of buying some piece of **** again so im researching all the dirt i can find on the best smartphones.

No cube here. The desire is quite fast, but I don't use 3d. Android is alright, I only installed several apps like file browser and satnav, it just is not the magic stuff everyone claims it to be. Why don't you go to a store and play with it for a while, thats what I do. If you like it get it

i guess its either hd2 or desire for me, will go and play with those later today and see witch is better for me. I am so nostalgic about the good old times 2 years ago, having a p535 from asus was the best thing ever, it did everything i wanted it to do, it was fast and very rarely i had to restart it. I think i am going to get the hd2, even though i would like a hardware joypad but i think i can live with touch I'm just too sad that everything these days looks like a bloody iphone: nokias,htc's,samsungs, everything... i just can't stand it! i miss the good old days of wm with a square profiled pda with good, strong hw buttons and wm5

I have no idea how you think Android isn't "market grade"
Especially with sense, it's the best thing out there. You can't think the nearly 8-year-old WinMo 6 is BETTER can you? The HD2 hardly has ANY games on it, Android has few. iPhone is the only really good mobile phone gaming platform, but I'm betting on Android catching up.
The best phone you can get is definitely a Nexus One. If not, get a Desire (or equivalent Incredible) or the Samsung Galaxy S.

I agree with Android being market grade, but disagree with the general hate fir WinMo i've seen in this thread.WinMo is a dinosaur, but dinosaurs are still big and powerful creatures.
I personally don't like suggesting the N1 because of the problems i've heard of with the soft keys being hard to hit. And (not a very big deal) it only registers two points of contact iirc. My thing is if im going to pay money, i want the best, not something that is that limited.
I like the desire though. I wish more phones would have actual buttons. Between the Desire and the HD2, id get the Desire.
And i doubt the OP has issues with WinMo if he's been using it for years and us considering getting another WinMo phone.

I'm a WM guy. From the days Windows Mobile 2003, WM 5, WM 6, 6.1 to WM6.5.
Tried WP7 but found it inmature, crippled, limited, sterile and lacking all the power user features of the WM6.5
So I jumped back to my trusty T9193 HD2 with custom WM6.5 Energy ROM. It is the Telstra Australia version of HTC HD2 running on USA AT&T 3G Bands.
Due to the lack of support from the apps developing community for Windows Mobile 6.5, I'm feeling tempted to get my hands on a Telstra Z710a HTC Sensation. Since Telstra Australia uses the same 3G (850MHz/1900MHz) bands as AT&T USA, it should be no problem to get it to work here (I suppose).
Of course Android is not WM6.5 but is a promissing, well featured, mature OS with a huge community of apps and ROMs developers.
After some reading on the forum, I found lots of people complaining about the display quality, the power-off charging issue and some other issues. Being an Australian phone, it will be a pain to get warranty repairs or exchange here in the states.
Due to these issues, Would it be wise to "upgrade" from my HD2 to the Sensation?
I'll get lynched for saying this, but iOS is the more mature platform (2007 vs Android's 2008) with more apps available if that is what you are looking for. Moreover, if you are worried about warranty and repairs, Apple usually takes good care of their customers.
I also was using an HD 2 for T-Mobile running the Energy Rom and I've been using the Sensation since it came out...no regrets!

I left my HD2 for the Sensation. Android is in a whole different league than WinMo 6.5. I actually had Android ROM's on my HD2 and still do. My Girlfriend uses my HD2 with the Android OS on it. I stopped using WinMo as soon as Android Nand came out for the HD2.
Either way, do it. You won't regret it.
The HD2 served me well. It was my first Android phone (Well.. with it flashed of course) and it was GREAT however I hit problems such as a dead touchscreen after a year (Which warranty fixed) than it overheating every damn time it had to do anything intensive or even because of heat. I sent it to HTC and they sent it back the same way saying they fixed it.. Though it persisted. Sent it back a week later, this time I made it a point to tell them that they did NOTHING last time and wasted my money by sending it back without doing any changes. (My WinMo rom was still there with settings I changed specifically to see if they even did a ROM wipe.) They exchanged the motherboard the 2nd time and it was great.. for about a month.. than the overheating began once again. I mean I'm not even doing things like watching long videos or playing video games.. All I did was run it as a phone.. browsed the net for 10 minutes at a time 2 times max a day.. texted a few.. and it would die..
Going off a tangent, but you won't regret the switch to the Sensation 4G.. You won't see much change if you are just going to use it as a phone though! Gaming/video watching will be a lot better however

Depends on what you are using the phone for. I actually am keeping my HD2 because of the great office integration and ability of the OS. If you have a shortage of apps you might be looking in the wrong place. True, the official marketpalce is seriously lacking in apps, however a quick search of the world wide web will reveal many many more. However as far as multi-media and gaming, the sensation wins hands down. Btw, Ive had android and am currently running WP7 on my phone because of the, once again, great office integration plus the rapidly expanding marketplace. I just love the ability to switch Roms and OS's like no other phone can. It truly is a superphone. What other phone has the ability to remain "current" after two years in this rapidly developing digital world?

Due to the lack of support from the apps developing community for Windows Mobile 6.5, I'm feeling tempted to get my hands on a Telstra Z710a HTC Sensation. Since Telstra Australia uses the same 3G (850MHz/1900MHz) bands as AT&T USA, it should be no problem to get it to work here (I suppose).
Of course Android is not WM6.5 but is a promissing, well featured, mature OS with a huge community of apps and ROMs developers.
After some reading on the forum, I found lots of people complaining about the display quality, the power-off charging issue and some other issues. Being an Australian phone, it will be a pain to get warranty repairs or exchange here in the states.
Due to these issues, Would it be wise to "upgrade" from my HD2 to the Sensation?

The biggest thing to me was getting over the issue of not having the physical buttons. Still bugs me from time to time. The biggest button I miss is the end call/power button.
Like you I'm still down for WM6.5, honestly I saw nothing wrong with it. However I did install Android on my HD2 and liked it. Call it my test run for the final migration to Android full time.
The speaker doesn't seem to be as loud as the HD2 but works. The camera can zoom while recording video BUT doesn't have MP4 format as an option. I hope S-Off can take care of that somewhere (recording format).

Depends on what you are using the phone for. I actually am keeping my HD2 because of the great office integration and ability of the OS. If you have a shortage of apps you might be looking in the wrong place. True, the official marketpalce is seriously lacking in apps, however a quick search of the world wide web will reveal many many more. However as far as multi-media and gaming, the sensation wins hands down. Btw, Ive had android and am currently running WP7 on my phone because of the, once again, great office integration plus the rapidly expanding marketplace. I just love the ability to switch Roms and OS's like no other phone can. It truly is a superphone. What other phone has the ability to remain "current" after two years in this rapidly developing digital world?

In my experience mate, it's only an upgrade on paper
I have the Australian (Telstra) version of the Sensation and can only speak from experience with this, but I got far better performance out of a NAND ROM on my 9193 than I did with this heap (stock). That changed a bit once I S-OFFed and put a custom ROM/kernel on there, but Sense is still laggy as all buggery and my Atrix still runs rings around it. Even putting a new Launcher over the top hasn't made it 'feel' like a dual-core, like the Atrix and GS2 do.
I still use my 9193, it's my work phone. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. It's far too good an all-rounder and far too well supported.
In terms of flexibility, you are already sitting on the ultimate device. It will be a long time before we see another device with the support and variety that LEO got.

Good luck either way, your 9193 will get an excellent price in the Marketplace should you decide to sell

Specialy from all of you, the ones that still keep and use their HD2s.
I work as IT Specialist and for me the HD2 is like a swiss army knife. I carry in its storage card all the files and apps I need to keep my networks and clients up and running in no time. Its a matter of connecting the phone to any network pc to upload the file needed and presto.
I don't know of any other phone with such flexibility and integration with the pc enviroment.
I was tempted by the "lack of support" from the apps comumunity but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
I love the HTC HD2, this is the one that started it all!
I think I'll wait some time to see how it goes with the Sensation or if HTC comes with something comparable or better for AT&T.
I was using HD2 for long time , energy roms then moved to android on HD2 , when i did try the android couldn't back again to the WM so i bought the sensation for smoother and more performance android, and hangs anymore
