I'm sorry to say that there is no way that you can recover them. When you flashed, did you do a master clear?

This concerns me because I am counting on mail, contacts, and calendar to be safe on Google after I wipe and install a new ROM. How is it even possible to have contacts that are not on Google?

Contacts are synced to the cloud by default so unless you unticked this option any new contacts should have been added automatically. Have you checked the 'Contacts' section in gmail?
Beyond that they are gone for good once you've flashed a ROM (without doing a manual backup).
If you followed rule#1 of flashing then you should have a Nandroid backup of your stock ROM, taken just before flashing the custom ROM. Why not backup your ROM as it is now, reinstall the stock Nandroid, backup your contacts and then return to your custom ROM?

I do a fair amount of flashing/restoring ROMs on my Aria... One thing I've noticed is whenever I restore a ROM, my contact list's custom ringtones, send-to-voicemail settings, etc., get reset.
Anyone know the reason? Or have a way to keep them backed up?
Im a little confused. So you back up your phone, for example in ROM Manager, then flash a new ROM and run your backup and none of those things are there, or just the contacts and other things you said above?
Where are your contacts saved to? SIM, Phone, Google, etc?
Contacts are all on an Exchange server. I do not sync to Gmail at all.
The contacts are all there, but the custom ringtones set for different contacts nor the "send to voicemail" state get restored.
Seems to happen on Liberated as well as CM...
I was having the same problem switching roms I would lose everything but that's because I did a complete wipe and factory reset. I learned that switching between similar roms like cm6.1 and cm6.2 u don't have to do the factory reset just wipe cache and all my stuff was still there. I've done a restore through rom manager wiped cache only and samething still had my stuff. Hope this helps

Did you try backup CONTACTS with titanium backup?
Hey Guys -
I had taken a backup from the system using CWM (backup menu selection)
After flashing a new ROM i realized I lost all my contacts.
Is there a way to recover only contacts from the back up? I don't want to do a full restore.
Cheers,
Brightidea.
your contacts are never included in a backup. its best that you sync them to your gmail account so that they can be restored after you flash a rom.

Oh thank you for the response. Does anyone know in which files the Android OS keep the contacts stored in the phone memory?

The only way I know how to do it is to: 1) do full restore 2) sync your contacts with google 3)reflash ROM 4) resync contacts with google.
Hope this helps.

not that i know of. but i do know that if you go to your contacts list>menu button>import/export>export to sd card, it creates a file of your contacts on your sd card. you can restore this file by hitting import from sd card

Have a look into the data storage area of the com.android.providers.contacts package. The contacts2.db database holds your contacts.

when you install a new room you need to do a full wipe and you will lose widgets, personal settings, contacts saved in phone memory, installed programs.. from SD-card you will not lose any data

Well, you don't lose anything if you take a nandroid backup, and decide to come back to the old ROM later...
As for flashing a new ROM, you lose anything that's not backed up online (eg. Google data, Facebook, Twitter etc)
hey guys i recently rooted my phone and one of the steps included me making a backup of my data. the root resulted in me losing all my contacts info and the app i used (Superbackup) did not save any of my contacts. i was wondering if there was a way i can access my backup file in order to retrieve my contacts or if there was any other method of restoring old contacts after a factory reset?

select backup
hey it wont let me select my backup? do i need to set up the path for my backup (located on my sd card)?
Did you make a nand backup through CWM or TWRP? or did you use Superbackup to make your backup? If you made a nand you can use TB to retrieve contacts from it.
Now that I'm reading this again it seems like you didn't back up all of your phone only used superbackup. I this case unless superbackup can restore your contacts I'd have to say your starting fresh.
Unless maybe you used kies to back them up or have a copy on your sim card.
backup
i used CWM to make a nandroid backup and when i open the CWM folder for backups on my sd card i see the file Nandroid.md5..can i use Titanium Backup to restore my contacts from this file?

Never heard of super backup. Use titanium backup and dig through your backup and pull out the contacts.

hey guys thanks for all the help TB restored all my contacts
thanks everyone
md5 is just some kinds of verification code for the files. You should look under data or something. Either titanium backup or appextractor should work.

Rooting didn't cause his problem he just doesn't know wtf he is doing by default Google backs up contacts to your Gmail or they get saved to your sim card

i know, thats why i asked him the question, but looks like hes gone until he mucks something else and posts another newb question
I have some general questions about how best to backup data across Sense and non-Sense based ROMS.
I'm using MIUI now and it took some doing to get my contacts up to where it was because it doesn't use Sense contacts. Do you guys just stick to Gmail contacts? I also tried copying all my contacts to my gmail account but then it wouldn't sync with Gmail because Sense apparently stores XML somewhere in the contact data which was causing errors during the sync process.
Secondly, is it possible for me to make a full backup so if anything doesn't work I can reboot into recovery and restore? I'm not sure if this is related but what is a nandroid backup?
I would copy all contacts to the SIM card, then just import them after a rom installation.
And yes, you can make a backup in TWRP recovery and then just restore it later if you want.

Doesn't the SIM have a limit and can it store all the different fields and so on?
